Two New Records Of Water Mites (Hydrachnidia, Acari) For The Turkish Fauna: Bandakia Concreta Thor 1903 And Brachypoda Mutila Walter 1928, Yunus Ömer Boyaci, Muhli̇s Özkan

Male and female specimens of Brachypoda mutila and male specimens of Bandakia concreta collected from a seepage spring in West Anatolia are described. Their morphological features are compared with those of the most closely related species. Identification keys to the species known from the Palearctic of the genera Bandakia and Brachypoda are provided.

In the course of examining rumen contents obtained from 8 domestic goats (Capra hircus L.) from the south-east of Turkey, a new ciliate species Entodinium salmani n.sp. (Entodiniidae, Entodiniomorphida) and 4 formae [E. salmani salmani n.sp., n.f., E. salmani monospinosum n.sp., n.f., E. salmani bispinosum n.sp., n.f., E. salmani trispinosum n.sp., n.f.] were distinguished. The main characteristics of these species and formae are described in detail and compared with those of similar ones previously reported.

The Birds Of Dicle Dam (Diyarbakır), Recep Karakaş, Ahmet Kiliç

The birds of Dicle Dam, which is located 50 km north-east of Diyarbakır city centre, were studied between February 2000 and February 2002. During the observation period 116 bird species that belong to 15 orders and 38 families were determined and listed. Among these species defined, 44 of them certainly and 26 presumably breed in the area, while 46 of them are transitory migrating or wintering birds for the region. Three species are globally under threat. The determination of bird species will help in the evaluation and comparison of possible changes regarding the bird fauna in the future.

This study aimed to contribute to the knowledge of Turkish Malacostraca fauna by determining the Malacostraca (Crustacea) fauna of Yuvarlak Stream. Monthly sampling was performed at 10 stations along the stream between May 2001 and April 2002. Eleven taxa were determined; of these, 5 (Gammarus balcanicus, Gammarus longipedis, Echinogammarus antalyae, Corophium orientale and Orchestia platensis) belong to Amphipoda, 3 (Palaemonetes antennarius, Atyaephyra desmarestii orientalis and Potamon potamios) to Decapoda, 2 (Lekanesphaera hookeri and Cyathura carinata) to Isopoda and 1 (Diamysis mesohalobia mesohalobia) to Mysidacea.

Edible species and their distribution in Turkey were studied. The absence of Helix pomatia, a species reported to occur in Turkey in resources in various disciplines, is mentioned, while 7 species of edible snails determined (Theba pisana, Eobania vermiculata, Cryptomphalus aspersus, Cantareus apertus, Helix asemnis, Helix cincta and Helix lucorum) are described in detail by means of morphology, distribution, systematical positions, and a key to the species is given. Additionally, problems about the future of snail harvesting in Turkey and standards to be applied are discussed.

Four experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of diets with reduced Ca or nonphytate P (nPP) levels with supplemental virginiamycin (Vm) on growth performance and bone response variables in chicks. All diets were corn-soybean meal based and all treatments were replicated six or eight times with five or six chicks each. Reducing dietary nPP from 0.45 to 0.15, 0.25, or 0.35% decreased most growth and bone response variables. The objective of Experiment 1 was to determine the effect of bovine follicular fluid (bFF) on nuclear maturation. Treatment A (Control) oocytes were stained with Hoechst-33342 immediately after aspiration from follicles, whereas, oocytes in Treatment B were held in bFF for 12 hours at 38¢ªC and then stained to determine nuclear status. No significant difference was detected between treatment groups. Results indicate that bFF inhibits resumption of meiosis. Bakso (Traditional Indonesian Meatball) Properties With Postmortem Condition And Frozen Storage, Dino Rahardiyan

Bakso is a finely comminuted boiled Indonesian meat product that is traditionally made of starch, salt and emulsified prerigor or early postmortem meat and often sold from street vendors. Recently processors have begun to commercially manufacture bakso. This research was conducted to investigate the substitution of early postmortem meat with postrigor meat to allow more efficient manufacturing and raw material procurement. The first experiment was to determine the properties of bakso with three tapioca starch concentrations added to early or late postmortem beef. No differences (p<0.05) were observed in bakso properties of composition and texture, though bakso made of post-rigor meat had slightly less elasticity, strength and shear. These disadvantages were compensated by incorporating 15% starch concentration, indicating that the replacement of early postmortem meat with postrigor meat was applicable in industrial mass production of bakso. The second phase of experiments was to investigate the properties of bakso with different frozen storage times of raw postrigor meat and after different times of frozen storage for bakso made from postrigor and early postmortem meat. Postrigor meat substitution for early postmortem meat in bakso with 15% tapioca starch resulted in minimum composition and textural differences (p>0.05). Mastitis in prepartum dairy heifers has been recognized as a significant economic problem for the dairy industry. Intramammary infusion of cephapirin sodium was completed in 20 treatment animals and the results were compared to 25 non-treated control animals. Bacteriological data from the quarter milk samples were used to determine and compare initial infection rates and cure rates following calving between treatment and control groups. Comparisons were also made between groups for differences in reproductive performance, milk yield, somatic cell count and milk ketone concentration. Cryopreservation of animal oocytes will permit germplasm of valuable or unique females to be preserved for extended times. The objective of this research was to derive a procedure to cryopreserve bovine oocytes by vitrification to be used as recipients for somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). Caprine oocytes vitrified by the same procedure were assayed by cytological examination of microtubules. In the first two of three experiments, bovine oocytes matured in vitro were vitrified in a mixture of ethylene glycol (EG), dimethylsulfoxide (Me2SO) and trehalose, and then subjected to in vitro fertilization (IVF) or SCNT. The stocking of size-graded catfish into production ponds should increase production efficiency, but grading large numbers of fish with existing technology is laborious. We evaluated the effectiveness of a mechanical grader recently developed at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) relative to that of box and sock graders and assessed injuries sustained by stocker channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus during grading. Three 0.25-acre ponds were stocked at 11,777 lb/acre. Initial total length (TL) ranged from 6.3 to 15.7 in, and initial weight of individuals ranged from 0.04 to 1.10 lb. Texture Profile Analysis of minced catfish products indicated that minced proteins from the belly flap meat have excellent functional properties to form gels or restructured products. Belly flap meat is considered a low-value trimming, with about 16.9% protein and 11.2% total lipid. Washing of minced catfish trimmings increased the moisture content from 71.5% to 77.9% while reducing mechanical hardness (19.1 N to 11.9 N), chewiness index (14.2 N to 8.83 N) and shear energy (0.82 J to 0.51 J). No significant changes were found in cohesiveness, resilience, and springiness of the minced fish after washing or the addition of 3.3% …

Samples of Chaenocephalus aceratus (Lönnberg) were collected during a trawl survey carried out around the South Shetland Islands in January–February 2002. Fish were caught by commercial bottom trawl fishing down to 500 m depth, using a stratified randomized sampling design. As observed in other recent surveys within the same area, C. aceratus represented one of the predominant species. Overall, 357 specimens ranging from 13 and 67 cm (TL) were selected for the present study. The Margaret River hairy marron, Cherax tenuimanus (Smith, 1912) (Decapoda: Parastacidae) is critically endangered due to the introduction of the widespread marron, C. cainii Austin, 2002. This project investigates the rapid replacement of C. tenuimanus with studies important to its conservation. The ability to identify correctly in the field C. tenuimanuss, C. cainii and hybrids was investigated by linking morphology and marker allozyme loci. The northern fowl mite (NFM), Ornithonyssus sylviarum, is a commonly occurring external parasite of chickens. Primarily, caged layers have the greatest incidence of this mite, with bird unrest, unthriftiness and lowered production as some of the adverse effects of the infestation. In the current study, birds with natural NFM infestations were randomized into five treatment groups, placed in individual cages in treatment-specific batteries (all in one room), and evaluated for 28 d for infestation quantification by way of index scoring and feather digest. A survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of helminth infections in spent broiler breeders. Intestinal tracts from 10 birds from each of five farms were obtained and examined for parasite identification and quantification. Heterakis gallinarum infections were the most common, followed in order of decreasing incidence by Capillaria obsignata, Ascaridia galli, and Raillietina cesticillus. Peak worm burdens for individual birds were 121 (A. galli), 535 (H. gallinarum), 215 (C. obsignata) and 125 (R. cesticillus). Significant farm-to-farm variation in worm burdens was observed.

This research was conducted to determine the non-phosphorus effects of phytase in diets for swine and poultry. An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of phytase addition on energy availability and protein and fat deposition in growing pigs. Results from this experiment indicated that phytase had small positive effects on energy availability, protein deposition, and fat deposition. Ecological traps occur where species are attracted to use a resource that exposes them to greater than normal risk of mortality or reproductive failure. We observed complete failure of Hooded Oriole (Icterus cucullatus) nests in streetlights in a south Texas suburb where use of such nest sites was relatively common. This is of concern as streetlights functioned essentially as traps: orioles built their nests within them but all these nests failed, evidently because the eggs were exposed to lethal temperatures. The sex composition, age, length and body mass relationship, Von Bertalanffy growth equation and condition factor of 342 individuals were investigated to determine some population parameters of goldfish (Carassius auratus L., 1758) between June 1998 and May 1999 in Lake Eğirdir. Sex composition was 32.75 % females and 67.25 % males and the fish were 0-IV years old.
