In this study, 212 Acanthobrama marmid Heckel, 1843 individuals were caught at monthly periods from Keban Dam Lake between January 1997 and December 1998 and transported live to the laboratory. After haematological analysis was carried out on the blood samples taken from their hearts, total lengths and weights were measured. The sex of the fish was identified and their ages were determined from the scales. The total amounts of erythrocytes, leucocytes, thrombocytes, haemoglobin and haematocrits and MCV, MCH and MCHC parameters were determined from blood samples. This study aimed to investigate the critical control points for the contamination in a factory experiencing a problem with coliform bacteria and Escherichia coli, and to prevent economic losses and also to protect public health by facilitating production under hygienic conditions. Bacteriological Investigation Of Udder Lobes Of Cows With Mastitis Slaughtered In The Elazığ Region, Hasan Basri̇ Gülcü, Hasan Basri̇ Ertaş

Bacteriological examinations were performed on 206 mammary tissue samples taken from 160 cows with mastitis in Elazığ. The isolates were identified as Staphylococcus aureus (39.04%), Staphylococcus epidermidis (17.81%), Actinomyces pyogenes (14.38%), Escherichia coli (8.9%), Streptococcus agalactiae (6.16%), Streptococcus uberis (4.11%), Streptococcus dysgalactiae (3.42%), Corynebacterium bovis (1.37%), Pasteurella haemolytica (1.37%) and Bacillus cereus (1.37%).

Epizootiological Studies On Haemaphysalis Ticks In Ankara Province, Turkey, Hati̇ce Çi̇çek

This study was carried out in Ankara province, Turkey, between September 1996 and August 1998. During the study 1208 sheep, 1001 goats and 1059 cattle were examined for Haemaphysalis ticks. These examinations revealed that 380 (37.96%) goats, 346 (28.64%) sheep and 203 (19.16%) cattle had Haemaphysalis infestation. In total, 5254 Haemaphysalis ticks were collected from these animals. They were identified as H. parva, H. sulcata, H. punctata and Haemaphysalis nymphs. Of the 5254 Haemaphysalis ticks 89.70% were H. parva adults, 0.28% H. parva nymphs, 6.64% H. sulcata adults, 2.05% H. punctata adults and 0.13% H. punctata nymphs, while 0.89% were …

The aim of this study was to determine the quality changes of anchovy (Engraulis engrasicholus, L. 1758) and bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix, L. 1766) due to a multiple freezing-thawing process. The samples were stored in straphor plate at -30 ºC and thawed in a refrigerator (+4 ± 1 ºC, 16 h), microwave (180 W, 15 m) and in running water (+21 ± 1 ºC, 2h) for 15 day periods. A data set containing 2-year test day milk yield records was used. Random regression model solutions established with a covariance function (CF) approach was used. Persistence and lactation curve explanation performances of polynomial, Wilmink and Ali-Schaeffer curve definitions were compared for CF. When comparisons were made for R2 values, polynomial (0.9835) definition headed the list, followed by the Ali-Schaeffer curve (0.9534), and Wilmink curve (0.6023) definitions. Among the persistence predictions in respect of lactation orders, the Ali-Schaeffer curve provided predictions with the minimum variance, followed by the Wilmink and polynomial curve approaches. Tulum cheese was divided into 2 equal parts. One part was inoculated with 10^4 spores/g of aflatoxin-producing Aspergillus parasiticus NRRL 2999 strain. The other part, the control group, was not inoculated. All the samples were ripened in glass jars at 2 different temperatures (10 ± 1 and 20 ± 1 °C) and relative humidities (85 ± 2% and 95 ± 2%) and analyzed for aflatoxin formation on days 1, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 of storage using thin layer chromatography. Effects Of Different Diets On The Growth Performance, Gonad Development And Body Composition At First Sexual Maturity Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Devri̇m Memi̇ş, Hüseyi̇n Gün

Rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss with an initial mean weight of 174 g (1+ year old) were fed on 3 different commercial diets (1 extruded pellet and 2 steam pellet) in the same environmental conditions until their first spawning. Changes in growth performance (weight gain, condition factor, specific growth rate and feed conversion rate), gonadosomatic index (GSI), hepatosomatic index (HSI) and body composition (protein, lipid, ash and dry matter) were investigated. The mean weight gain and condition factor for fish fed the extruded diet was significantly greater than for those fed the steam pellet diets (P < 0.05 ). There were no significant differences in specific growth rate, mean length increments and feed conversion rate among the groups, although the feed conversion rate for the extruded diet was slightly lower than the others. The HSI of the group fed an extruded diet was significantly greater than those of the others ( P < 0.05 ). The GSI values of female and male fish at the end of the study (October) did not differ significantly among the groups. Similarly, diet had no significant effects on the muscle composition of the trial fish, except that the muscle lipid of the group fed the extruded diet was significantly higher than those of the other groups (P < 0.05).

Thirty-three adult (2+ years old) male and 27 female Kars dogs, raised by different breeders in several villages of the Kars region, were used. Body weight and all body measurements except for distance between the ears were higher in males than in females (P < 0.05, P < 0.01).

The objectives of this experiment were to induce prostate atrophy by ligating prostate vessels and nerves and evaluate the histological changes in the prostates. Animal material consisted of 10 normal (healthy) crossbred dogs. The branches of the prostate artery, prostate veins, prostate innervating nerves, and hypogastric and pelvic nerves were ligated and then cut for each of the dogs under general anesthesia. Three months after surgery, the dogs were euthanased by with an overdose of sodium pentobarbital. Weighing data from 389 broiler carcasses and parts formed the research material. The carcasses were divided into 6 different groups according to their weight. Cutting up shrinkage and percentage rates of the parts in the total weight were determined. Gross and net changes in enterprise income were determined according to the summer and winter prices of the whole body and parts. A young dog was examined because of regurgitating at the time of weaning to solid food. The dog was thin, underweight and had a sparse hair coat and distended abdomen. The cervical oesophagus was palpable as a flaccid, air-filled tube in the neck. Cardiac murmurs were not detected on auscultation of the thorax. The cardiopulmonary and clinical effects of the infusion of pentobarbital sodium in combination with fentanyl for long-term anaesthesia in 9 pigs were investigated. Pigs were premedicated with i.m. atropine at a dose of 0.05 mg/kg and azaperon at a dose of 2 mg/kg. General anaesthesia was induced with i.v. thiopental sodium at a dose of 3.3 mg/kg. In this study, the reproduction biology of 332 chub (Leuciscus cephalus L. 1758) was studied from June, 1999, to June, 2000, on a monthly basis in Topçam Dam Lake. Egg numbers were estimated in 65 females caught just prior to spawning. The sex and age compositions of chub were determined. The specimens were composed of 27.11% males and 72.89% females. Male and female chub become sexually mature in the second year of their life spans. Spawning is in March and April. The fecundity of chub varies from 2100-66,400 per female. Hypertrophic osteodystrophy was diagnosed in 16 male and 2 female puppies aged between 2.5 and 8 months. All animals had stiff and stilted gait, painful swellings in the metaphyseal areas of the antebrachium and tibia, pyrexia, weakness and diarrhoea as common symptoms. Radiological examination of the affected areas showed extraperiosteal bone proliferations. With chronicity, the new bone formation spanned the entire diaphysis from the distal to the proximal metaphysis. The anaesthetic effects of quinaldine sulphate (QS) together with diazepam (D) on tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (20-25 g) were studied at different temperatures. The application of QS with D significantly increased the anesthesia level of QS in the fish. Depending on temperature, the fish entered light or deep anesthesia levels with the use of QS alone at 10 or 35 mg/l, compared to 5 or 20 mg/l when used together with D (1-2 mg/l). Seabirds move throughout the day in changing, patchy environments as they engage in various behaviors. We studied the diurnal abundance dynamics of Glaucous-winged Gulls (Larus glaucescens) in a habitat patch dedicated to loafing in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Washington. We constructed three differential equation models as alternative hypotheses and then used model selection techniques to choose the one that most accurately described the system. We validated the model on an independent data set, made a priori model predictions, and conducted a field test of the predictions. Do Rhinoceros Auklet, Cerorhinca Monocerata, Fledglings Fly To The Sea From Their Natal Burrows?, James L. Hayward, Jere K. Clayburn

The mode of departure of Rhinoceros Auklet fledglings from their nest burrows has remained uncertain. Both walk-down and fly-down hypotheses have been proposed. Here we use the unique geography of Protection Island, Washington, to evaluate the fly-down hypothesis. Some fledglings raised on Protection Island do appear to walk to the water, but our results suggest that many of the island's fledgling Rhinoceros Auklets fly to the sea.
