The experiment reported herein aimed to investigate whether sodium chloride (NaCl) provided through feed and/or drinking water, compared to NaCl provided in feed, affected the live weight (LW), live weight gain (LWG), feed (FI) and water intake (WI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), carcass weight (CW) and dressing percentage (DP) of Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix Japonica). In a randomised block experimental design, a total of 252 one-week-old Japanese quails were allocated randomly into 4 treatment groups. During recent decades, the study of fatty acids (FAs) belonging to the n-3 family in seafood has intensified due to their beneficial effect on cardiovascular disease. This study was undertaken to determine the FA composition of muscle lipids of three different farm raised trouts (Salvelinus alpinus, Salmo trutta fario and Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed the same diet and raised under the same conditions. Palmitic acid (16:0) in total saturated fatty acid (SFA) and oleic acid (18:1 n-9) in monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) were the most abundant FAs and significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed between fish species. The differences in total SFA among the trouts were significant (P < 0.01), and O. mykiss had the highest (31.92%) SFA content while S. trutta fario showed the lowest in their edible muscle tissue. However, there was a significantly (P < 0.01) opposite observation for MUFA among the trouts, in which S. trutta fario had the highest content (41.90%) of MUFA in their muscle tissue while O. mykiss had the lowest (30.81%). In this study, the capture efficiencies and catch rates of three different traps were compared for the blue crab Callinectes sapidus in Beymelek Lagoon, Antalya, Turkey. All gear was used simultaneously and in the same habitats. The mean catch per unit effort (CPUE) was determined to be significantly higher for hoop nets than for traps. Gear effectiveness was examined by comparing CPUE (CPUE as number of crab per trap per haul, and g per trap haul), mean weight of individual crabs, catch composition and width frequency distributions of the blue crab for each gear.

Fish were exposed to three different sublethal doses in order to determine the effects of Cypermethrin on some biochemical parameters (Ca-Calcium, P-Phosphorus, Na-Sodium and TP-Total Protein) of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). After 15 days exposure, Ca and P decreased, while TP and Na took various values depending on the doses of synthetic pyrethroid.

Thymic Nurse Cells Determined In Situ At The Light And Electron Microscopic Level, F. Fi̇gen Kaymaz, Atti̇la Dağdevi̇ren

Thymic nurse cells are isolated thymic epithelial/thymocyte complexes described in vitro. Their in vivo existence is controversial. We examined rat thymi in order to distinguish thymic nurse cells in vivo using the zinc iodide-osmium tetroxide (ZIO) fixation/staining technique. There were mainly two types of strongly ZIO reactive cells in the thymic cortex: macrophages and small clusters of thymic epithelial cells. The latter group was composed of thymic epithelial cells and intact thymocytes forming complexes. Thus we suggest that these structures are in situ equivalents of thymic nurse cells.

In this study, the detection of canine parvovirus (CPV) in a fecal sample from a dog with enteritis was performed for the first time using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in Turkey. The final PCR product was analyzed using the restriction fragment length polymorphysm (RFLP) technique. RFLP analysis using Apa LI and Eco RV restriction endonucleases revealed homology in the nucleotide sequence in at least the VP2 coding region of the virus DNAs detected in the fecal specimen and prepared from attenuated vaccine virus as a positive control.

Histopathology Of The Epidermal Papilloma In Cage Cultured Mirror Carp (Cyprinus Carpio) In Eğirdir Lake, Öznur Di̇ler, M. Rüştü Özen

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the histopathology of enzootic epidermal papillomas in cage cultured mirror carp from the Liman region of Eğirdir Lake was investigated. Macroscopically, the lesions were creamy-white, had a villus-like structure and were localised in the operculum, lateral line and fins. Histopathological studies showed that lesions were the result of hyperplasia of fibrous connective tissue and epidermal tissues. The cells of both tissues were faintly stained by HxE and PAS. Under light microscopy, cytoplasmic vacuolation in epidermal cells in the lesions was prominent. Mucous cells were relatively common and larger than normal. Chemotherapy effectively cured all lesions.

The effects of 90 Hz and 5 mT EMF on blood Ca^{++}, P^{+++}, Na^{+}, K^{+} and Cl^{-} levels were investigated. For this purpose, 72 Swiss-Albino mice were used. On days 15, 30 and 45, blood was taken from both the experimental and control groups. A statistically significant decrease in the calcium level was only observed on day 30. In this study, 120 British male mice, weighing 35-40 g, and 5 months old were used. Three groups, one control (Group I) and two experimental (Groups II and III), were formed. This study was conducted to determine the presence and contamination levels of Listeria spp. in 100 samples of chicken meat, including 40 mince meat samples, 30 meatball samples and 30 burger samples which were retailed fresh in the markets of Ankara. In this study, the oviducts of 10 laying hens aged 8 months and 10 oviducts of pullets aged 2 months were comparatively examined. The oviducts of hens consisted of five regions: infundibulum, magnum, isthmus, uterus and vagina. Tissue samples were taken from the five oviduct regions. The samples were fixed in 10% neutral formalin and embedded in paraffin and then cut into 6 micron sections. All the animals were anesthesized with xylazine hydrochloride 2.3 mg/kg IM (Rompun, Bayer, Turkey) premedication followed by ketamine hydrochloride 10 mg/kg IM (Ketalar, Eczacıbaşı, Turkey) injection. In this study, the thyroid hormone levels in sheep experimentally treated with selenium were investigated. Twelve Akkaraman sheep were used in the investigation. Selenium was given intramuscularly at doses of 0.1 (Group 1) and 0.4 mg/kg (Group 2). The blood samples were taken from the jugular vein at 1, 2, 4, 8, 24, 48, 96 and 144 hours after the administration. Hydrocephalus associated lesions such as diverticula, clefts and tears observed in periventricular white matter were studied pathologically in three puppies with necropsy between 1993 and 1994. Enlargement of the cranial vault was present in the puppies. The animals were blind, and their morphological alterations were similar. Marked hydrocephalus caused by mesencephalic canal malformations and obstruction was detected in all cases. Compression atrophy was seen in the nucleus caudatus, hippocampus, putamen and cerebellum in all animals. Cerebral sulci malformations were also detected in the cranial parts of the brain. The purpose of this study was to isolate Campylobacter species from the intestines and livers of chicken and to identify Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter jejuni by both conventional methods and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Four specific primers derived from the ceuE gene present in the genomes of C. coli and C. jejuni were used for PCR identification. The effects of protein sources added to the medium for maturation of bitch oocytes were investigated. Ovaries from spayed bitches were transported to the laboratory in PBS at 38 ºC within an hour. Recovered oocytes were divided into three groups and left for 72 h maturation at 38.5 ºC under an atmosphere of 5% CO_2 and high humidity. The liver damage and obstructions of the biliary tract were evaluated ultrasonographically in experimentally bile duct ligated dogs. Seven healthy dogs of different breeds were used. The common bile duct was double ligated at the duodenal region after clinical and ultrasonographic examinations. After that, clinical examinations, biochemical analyses and examinations of the liver, gallbladder and biliary tract were done ultrasonographically over 6 weeks. All dogs were necropsied and macroscopic and histologic alterations were determined at the end of the study. It was determined that the levels of serum ALT, ALP, GGT and T. Bilirubin were (p < 0.001-0.05) statistically significantly increased after the operation in all dogs. As a result of ultrasonographic examinations, it was determined that the bile ducts and gallbladder were distended, the neck of the gallbladder was larger and more tortuous than normal, hypoechoic sludge was prominent in the gallbladder, and perivascular, multifocal hyperechoic areas appeared in the liver parenchyma toward the end of the study. These alterations were confirmed macroscopically and microscopically at the end of the autopsy in all dogs. We consider that as well as blood serum parameters, ultrasonographic examinations are useful in the early diagnosis of biliary diseases and in differentiating them from hepatic diseases.

A new species, Pulluterina karachiensis, is described from the common pigeon Columba livia Gmelin in Karachi. The new species is characterized by possessing small suckers; a longer neck; fewer testes, smaller in size, and the comparatively smaller size of ova. This is the second species of the genus from Pakistan and third in the literature.

In this study, 1812 Ephemeroptera nymphs were collected in order to determine the Ephemeroptera fauna of Lake Ulubat Basin between April 1996 and September 1999. The distribution of 38 species belonging to 22 genera and 10 families is presented. Among these, the genus Brachycercus Curtis, 1834 and the species Brachycercus harrisella Curtis, 1834 are recorded in Turkey for the first time. In addition, previous records on the distribution of all 38 species in Turkey are given.

This study was carried out to investigate the species of the subfamily Tryphoninae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) in Turkish Thrace between 1992 and 1994. A total of 89 samples were collected from 42 localities and 26 species belonging to 11 genera were determined. Diagnostic keys to the species, subgenera and genera were prepared. In order to distinguish morphological characters that were mentioned in the keys, 31 original figures are given. The breakdown products of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) were separated using a rapid HPLC method. The K-value, Ki-value and H-value were also determined as a means of evaluating the quality of rainbow trout held in ice and modified atmosphere packaging comparing with sensory and microbiological analysis in terms of fresh fish quality. Results from the present research indicated that modified atmosphere did not extend the shelf life of trout but inhibited microbial growth compared to ice storage. In this study, the flower choices of different bumblebee species in Ankara province regarding their associations among various parasites and micro-organisms were determined. A total of 21 different species of the genera Bombus Latreille and Psithyrus Lepeletier were examined. The motile hypopus of the mite species Acarus farris (Oudemans, 1905) (Acaridae) was found to be phoretic on Bombus (Bombus) terrestris, Megabombus (Megabombus) argillaceus, Megabombus (Thoracobombus) zonatus and Pyrobombus (Sibiricobombus) niveatus queens. Nosema bombi was also determined to be an internal parasite of B. terrestris.
