A Preliminary Study On The Population Dynamics Parameters Of Whiting (Merlangius Merlangus Euxinus) In Turkish Black Sea Coastal Waters, Ali̇ İşmen

Some population parameters of the whiting (Merlangius merlangus euxinus) distributed along the Turkish Black Sea coast, were determined by using age-length data. The mean annual growth rate in length was found to be 3.7 cm. The maximum age group was determined as IX for females and VI for males. The seasonalized von Bertalanffy growth parameters in length were estimated to be L_o=39.1 cm, K = 0.15 year^{-1}, t_o = -1.53 year, C=0.23, t_s=0.48. Topotypes of Microtus guentheri were compared with specimens of the genus Microtus with 2n=54 chromosomes from western Anatolia. According to morphological and biometrical comparisons, it was determined that M. guentheri is a different species from Microtus lydius. The dorsal colour and the shape of the baculum distinguish M. guentheri from M. lydius morphologically. The production properties of Capoeta tinca, the dominant fish population in a naturally contaminated stream in the Kızılırmak Basin, were studied together with the physical and chemical characteristics of the waters and evaluated in order to assess the impact of the high natural salinity on the fish population. The evaluation was based on comparisons of fish specimens caught from Acı stream, which is highly contaminated by a lithology of high salt content, and those from Terme stream, the uncontaminated freshwater branch, between May 1995 and May 1996. Three Rhizopulvinaria species, Rhizopulvinaria pyrethri Borchsenius, Rhizopulvinaria turkestanica (Archangelskaya), and Rhizopulvinaria viridis Borchsenius, were identified on wild flora in eastern Anatolia in 1997. All of them are new records for the Turkish scale insect fauna.

Androgenesis involves the development of an organism with only paternal chromosomes. The induction of androgenesis using diploid sperm, highly effective UV-irradiation of egg, dispermy using heterologous eggs, the possibility of producing supermales for all male production and the recovery of cryopreserved sperm are recent technological developments in androgenesis in fish. However, few researchers have successfully produced viable diploid androgens in fish. The authors made an attempt to induce androgenesis in the common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) and the results are discussed along with the potential applications of androgenesis in conserving fish genomes and current knowledge on inducing androgenesis in fish.

Community Structure Of Macrobenthos Of A Southeast Texas Sand-Pit Lake Related To Water Temperature, Ph And Dissolved Oxygen Concentration, Kemal Çeli̇k

Water temperature (°C), pH, dissolved oxygen concentration (mg/l) and the community structure of the macrobenthos of a small southeast Texas sand-pit (Barry's) lake were studied from June 1995 to February 1996, which covered climatic extremes. The lake was a warm monomictic lake and no anoxic conditions were observed at any depth during the entire study period. A total of 50 taxa and 5614 individuals of macrobenthos were collected. The dominant organisms were Chaoborus punctipennis (Say), Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri (Claparede), and Dero obtusa (Udekem). The Occurrence Of The Rumen Ciliate Metadinium Banksi Dehority, 1985 (Ophryoscolecidae, Entodiniomorphida) From Domestic Goats (Capra Hircus L.) In Southeastern Turkey, Bayram Göçmen, Burk A. Dehority, Sami̇ye Rastgeldi̇

Metadinium banksi was observed in rumen contents from a single goat out of eight living in southeastern Turkey. It constituted 0.25% of the total ciliate population and had a 12.5% frequency of appearance. The size and percentage occurrence of this species in the present study are compared to those previously reported for other animal hosts living in different geographical locations. This study reports for the first time in Turkey the presence of Metadinium banksi in arctic ruminants.

Coccid (Homoptera: Coccoidea) Species Of Isparta Province, And Their Parasitoids From Turkey And Georgia, George Japoshvili, İsmai̇l Karaca

Turkish Journal of Zoology

A list of coccids distributed in Isparta province (Turkey) is given in this paper. Their parasitoids determined in Isparta and previously reported from Turkey and Georgia are also discussed. As a result of the survey studies performed in June-November, 2001, 21 species of coccids were found on different host plants in Isparta province. From 16 of these coccids, 19 species of parasitoids were obtained. The similarity index of two countries in terms of their coccid parasitoids fauna was 0.635.

The growth features of tench, Tinca tinca, in Bayındır Dam Lake were studied between March 1999 and February 2000. A total of 100 samples (51 males and 49 females) were examined. Age in both sexes ranged from age group I to V. The sex ratio was 1.04 and 1.0 for males and females respectively. The fork length and weight of females and males varied from 15.2 to 33.2 cm and 51.4 to 650.7 g and 15.7 to 34.7 cm and 52.8 to 822.6 g respectively. The most reliable bony structure and method were investigated for age determination of shad (Alosa pontica Eichwald, 1838) inhabiting the Black Sea. Therefore, five bony structures such as scale, vertebra, otolith, opercle and subopercle were removed from 240 individuals collected from April 1998 to April 1999. Each bony structure was prepared for age determination by different techniques, and examined by binocular microscope. The Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma (IPD) is a central paradigm in the study of animal cooperation. According to the IPD framework, repeated play (repetition) and reciprocity combine to maintain a cooperative equilibrium. However, experimental studies with animals suggest that cooperative behavior in IPDs is unstable, and some have suggested that strong preferences for immediate benefits (that is, temporal discounting) might explain the fragility of cooperative equilibria. We studied the effects of discounting and strategic reciprocity on cooperation in captive blue jays. Our results demonstrate an interaction between discounting and reciprocity. Development of the muskox protostrongylid lungworm, Umingmakstrongylus pallikuukensis, in its slug intermediate host, Deroceras laeve, was investigated under field conditions in the Arctic. Every two weeks, from 19 June to 28 August 1997, groups of ten experimentally infected slugs were placed in tundra enclosures in a mesic sedge meadow near Kugluktuk, Nunavut, Canada. First-stage larvae (L1) infecting slugs on or before 17 July developed to third-stage larvae (L3) in 4–6 weeks. The \alpha-amylase encoding gene from Bacillus subtilis ORBA97 strain was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli with the plasmid vector called pUC18 as well as in the \alpha-amylase negative Bacillus subtilis YB886 strain by using the pUB110 vector. The specific activity of the enzyme was determined to be 5.052 µmol (mg protein min)^{-1}. Zymogram analysis revealed no sign of protease degradation in the YB886 strain. The optimum temperature and pH of the enzyme were found to be 50°C and 5 respectively. In this study, the gonadosomatic index value and flesh productivity of Scorpion Fish (Scorpaena porcus Linne., 1758) were investigated for fish caught in the Sinop region using bottom nets. With this purpose, the gonadosomatic index value of a total of 633 samples were examined. The gonadosomatic index was found to have a maximum value in June and a minimum value in September. The flesh productivity of females was determined to be 34.24 ± 0.014 and 34.47 ± 0.015 for males and 34.35 ± 0.007 as a mean. This study describes a salmonella infection in a chinchilla farm of 40 families in the Yalova region. Twenty-four families were affected in a 10-day period after the outbreak of the disease and the clinical signs were apathy, anorexia, diarrhoea with or without hemorrhage, tremors, local paralysis, mucopurulent or hemorrhagic vaginal secretion in some females, abortions in 1 to 2 month-pregnant animals and death. A total of 404 horses was examined from the selected cities (Istanbul, Bursa, Balıkesir) of the Marmara region of Turkey. Blood was collected from all horses and the sera were analyzed for the presence of antibodies to equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) using an agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test. The results revealed that none of the horses were positive for antibodies to EIAV.

Polysaccharidase genes from rumen bacteria were transferred to and expressed in ruminal and non-ruminal Gram-positive bacteria. The transformation efficiency and genetic stability of polysaccharidase genes in bacteria from different habitats were investigated. PCR amplification of cloned polysaccharidase genes from Escherichia coli, Lactococcus lactis, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus sanguis and S. bovis strain 26 showed that rearrangement of plasmid and the gene fragment did not occur. The DNA band sizes from all primers agreed with the expectations of some transformants of S. bovis JB1 being rearranged. Seafoods are very perishable, and many different methods are used for the determination of their quality. Sensory and hypoxanthine values of cold stored trout burgers, which we prepared, were determined during a 28-day period. Burgers spoiled after the 21st day of storage. The TVB-N values were still very low when the burgers spoiled and the pH values decreased during their storage. Therefore total volatile bases nitrogen and pH analyses were not useful for the determination of the quality of trout burgers. In this research, monophasic, diphasic and triphasic logistic growth curve functions used to introduce the growing of the body weight in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) are presented. In male and female Japanese quail, the diphasic growth curve fits better than the other growth curves because of residual variance, autocorrelation and determination coefficients. In addition, the diphasic growth function is compared with the monophasic growth function to study the relationship between these two approaches for describing growth curves.

In this study, 30% suspension of barium sulfate (BS) and 1/1 and 1/3 dilated solutions of Na-meglumine diatriozate (NMD) and iohexol (IO) were administered via the naso-gastric trackt to 3 dogs and 3 cats in two different doses, i.e. 5 ml/kg (lower dose) and 10 ml/kg (higher dose). Each application was repeated at 1-week intervals. Radiographs were taken prior to, and at certain intervals after, contract medium (CM) applications. The effects of long-term administration of ethyl alcohol on insulin and glucagon hormone levels during pregnancy and lactation periods of rats were investigated. Female wistar albinos, 200±20 g, were used in this study. The control group consisted of 15 rats, and the experimental group consist of 25 ethyl-alcohol-addicted rats. While 0.9% saline (with sucrose) was to the control group, a 5 g kg perday dose of 20% ethyl alcohol was given to the experimental group.
