Effects Of Rumensin Level During An Acidosis Challenge, Trey Patterson, Todd Milton, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, M. Blackford, Cal Parrott Jan 2002

Effects Of Rumensin Level During An Acidosis Challenge, Trey Patterson, Todd Milton, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, M. Blackford, Cal Parrott

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Eighteen ruminally cannulated steers were used to determine effects of Rumensin level on incidence and severity of acidosis when an acidosis challenge was imposed. Steers received a high-concentrate finishing diet containing either 0, 30, or 45 grams/ton Rumensin. An acidosis challenge was created by feeding only 50% of diet intake one day followed by 175% of intake the next day, four hours post normal feeding time. Feeding Rumensin decreased feed intake during the prechallenge, challenge and acidosis recovery phase. Compared to 30 grams/ ton, feed intake was decreased by increasing Rumensin to 45 grams/ton during the five days following the …

Supplementing Yearling Summer Grazing Cattle With Fat And Protein And Subsequent Feedlot Performance, Ivan G. Rush Jan 2002

Supplementing Yearling Summer Grazing Cattle With Fat And Protein And Subsequent Feedlot Performance, Ivan G. Rush

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Yearling steers supplemented with protein (40% - 29% NPN - 19% from biuret) while grazing primarily crested wheat grass in the summer gained at a faster rate than control steers which were only provided a commercial salt/ mineral mix. A lower level of protein (20% - 6.7% NPN)/fat (15% -20%) combination supplement also increased gain over controls, but the supplement response was less than the higher protein supplement. Gain responses were greater during the latter part of the grazing season when forage quality was poorest. Supplementation intake varied but tended to be greater during the latter part of the grazing …

Forage Quality And Animal Performance Of Steers Grazing Smooth Bromegrass/Legume Pastures, Mark Ullerich, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Bruce Anderson, Michael Trammell Jan 2002

Forage Quality And Animal Performance Of Steers Grazing Smooth Bromegrass/Legume Pastures, Mark Ullerich, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Bruce Anderson, Michael Trammell

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A trial was conducted to evaluate effects of interseeding legumes into smooth bromegrass pastures on animal performance and forage quality. Animal gains on legume/bromegrass treatments were higher than bromegrass alone. Laboratory analysis of diet samples collected from ruminally fistulated steers indicated no difference in the undegradable intake protein content of pastures. Legume/bromegrass treatments had higher IVDMD than the control. Therefore, the increases in gain are attributed to increased energy of legume/bromegrass diets and not undegradable protein content.

Effect Of Sawdust Or Acid Application To Pen Surfaces On Nitrogen Losses From Open-Dirt Feedlots, John Lory, Julie Adams, Bahman Eghball, Terry J. Klopfenstein, J. F. Powers Jan 2002

Effect Of Sawdust Or Acid Application To Pen Surfaces On Nitrogen Losses From Open-Dirt Feedlots, John Lory, Julie Adams, Bahman Eghball, Terry J. Klopfenstein, J. F. Powers

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Two nutrient management treatments (sawdust or sulfuric acid application to pen surface) were compared to conventional management using 12 pens (10 steers/pen) to determine effects on performance and nitrogen losses from pens. Performance and carcass characteristics for treatments were similar to the control. The sawdust treatment retained more nitrogen in manure when removed from the pen surface and after composting. Increasing carbon by sawdust additions reduced nitrogen losses by 21%. Applying acid to the pen surface did not affect quantity of nitrogen or organic carbon conserved in manure and compost.

Epidermal Papilloma In An Ozark Hellbender (Cryptobranchus Alleganiensis Bishopi) From The Spring River Of Northwest Arkansas, Stanley E. Trauth, John C. Harshbarger, Patrick Daniel

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

An Ozark hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis bishopi) with multiple, large, warty skin lesions was collected in the Spring River, Fulton County, Arkansas, in 1994. The specimen was a female, 560 mm in total length, and had a mass of 1,947 g. Tissues were formalin-fixed, and three lesions were processed for histopathology. The normal skin at the tumor margins had a stratified squamous epidermis overlying a loose, well-vascularized, heavily pigmented dermis. Poison glands and mucous glands extended from the epidermis into the dermis. The lesions, in contrast, were masses of epidermal cells up to 100 times thicker than the normal epidermis. They …

Length-At-Age In Juvenile Patagonian Toothfish (Dissostichus Eleginoides), J. Ashford, C. Jones, S. Bobko, I. Everson

OES Faculty Publications

We used the otoliths from a sample of Dissostichus eleginoides pre-recruits, whose length density was distinctly polymodal, to see whether ages estimated by reading otoliths were congruent with the length modes observed. Length densities by age were compared graphically with the overall length density observed. Additionally, ages were predicted for each fish based on length, and compared with ages estimated from reading otoliths in a goodness-of-fit test. The majority of the otoliths (83.6%) were estimated to be from fish 1+ or 2+ years old, with mean total lengths of 32.5 cm and 41.3 cm respectively. No difference was found between …

Age And Growth Of Largemouth Bass At Freshwater Lagoon, Humboldt County, California, Stephen Will Pagliughi Jan 2002

Age And Growth Of Largemouth Bass At Freshwater Lagoon, Humboldt County, California, Stephen Will Pagliughi

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The quality of the largemouth bass fishery at Freshwater Lagoon was evaluated by assessing age structure, stock structure, condition, and growth characteristics. A total of 1,511 largemouth bass was sampled from 1986 through 2000 using a boat electroshocker. Scales were collected from 706 fish and assigned ages. Eleven age classes were identified with a maximum age of 10 years. Age assignment precision between two readings was 95%. Paired scale and otolith (sagittae) samples were collected via hook-and-line from 20 largemouth bass in spring and early summer of 2002. The agreement rate of age determination between structures was used as a …

Algal Blooms Reduce The Uptake Of Toxic Methylmercury In Freshwater Food Webs, Paul C. Pickhardt, Carol L. Folt, Celia Y. Chen, Bjoern Klaue, Joel D. Blum Jan 2002

Algal Blooms Reduce The Uptake Of Toxic Methylmercury In Freshwater Food Webs, Paul C. Pickhardt, Carol L. Folt, Celia Y. Chen, Bjoern Klaue, Joel D. Blum

Dartmouth Scholarship

Mercury accumulation in fish is a global public health concern, because fish are the primary source of toxic methylmercury to humans. Fish from all lakes do not pose the same level of risk to consumers. One of the most intriguing patterns is that potentially dangerous mercury concentrations can be found in fish from clear, oligotrophic lakes whereas fish from greener, eutrophic lakes often carry less mercury. In this study, we experimentally tested the hypothesis that increasing algal biomass reduces mercury accumulation at higher trophic levels through the dilution of mercury in consumed algal cells. Under bloom dilution, as algal biomass …

Superfetation In Beef Cattle, Joel Andrew Carter Jan 2002

Superfetation In Beef Cattle, Joel Andrew Carter

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Although superfetation has been reported in cattle and other species, there is considerable skepticism as to its existence due to the lack of clear evidence in these reports. Other explanations such as embryonic diapause or differential growth of twins have been suggested as more accurate descriptions of the cases reported as superfetation. The hypothesis of this study is that if a viable pregnancy can ensure maternal recognition in cattle, an asynchronous embryo can develop in a more chronologically advanced uterine environment. The objective was to produce superfetation by (1) ovulation induction and artificial insemination (AI) of pregnant cows and (2) …

Evidence For Infanticide In Bottlenose Dolphins Of The Western North Atlantic, Dale G. Dunn, Susan G. Barco, D. Ann Pabst, William A. Mclellan Jan 2002

Evidence For Infanticide In Bottlenose Dolphins Of The Western North Atlantic, Dale G. Dunn, Susan G. Barco, D. Ann Pabst, William A. Mclellan

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Nine bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) calves that stranded in Virginia in 1996 and 1997 died of severe blunt-force trauma. Injuries were concentrated on the head and chest and multiple rib fractures, lung lacerations, and soft tissue contusions were prominent. Skeletal and/or soft tissue trauma occurred bilaterally in all of the calves. One had a bite wound across the left mandible that exhibited deep punctures consistent with the tooth placement in an adult bottlenose dolphin. The lesions were not compatible with predation, boat strike, fisheries interactions, rough-surf injury, or blast injury. However, they were similar to traumatic injuries described in stranded …

Determination Of Protein Profile And Presence Of Antibodies In Llama Seminal Plasma (Llama Glama), Francisco Flores Lópes Jan 2002

Determination Of Protein Profile And Presence Of Antibodies In Llama Seminal Plasma (Llama Glama), Francisco Flores Lópes

Theses and Dissertations

Internationally, Bolivia has the largest llama population followed by Peru. This makes our country a power in this renewable resource for working and generating economic development. This is mainly because of the quality of llama meat, which has nutritional properties superior to other animal species. The development and research in our country of llamas is not very significant. But in other countries advanced studies have been done for years, specifically in the area of reproduction, which represents problems for intensive repopulation because of singular characteristics of semen and copulation. The present research work was done at the UAC in Tiahuanacu …

Effects Of Some Dna Gyrase Inhibitors On The Survival And Development Of Pimpla Turionellae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) Larvae Reared On An Artificial Diet, Kemal Büyükgüzel

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The effects of novobiocin, nalidixic and oxolinic acids, which are potent antibacterial agents, on the survival and development of the hymenopterous endoparasitoid Pimpla turionellae L. were investigated alone by rearing the larvae aseptically on chemically defined synthetic diets. The percentage of fifth instar larvae was not significantly affected by the diets with different levels of the antibiotics used in the study. A diet containing the lowest level of novobiocin significantly increased the yields of pupae and adults. This level also significantly shortened the developmental time for fifth instar, but had no significant effect on the complete development of the larvae …

Behavioural Abnormalities Of Cyprinion Watsoni On Exposure To Copper And Zinc, Syed Lal Shah Jan 2002

Behavioural Abnormalities Of Cyprinion Watsoni On Exposure To Copper And Zinc, Syed Lal Shah

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Cyprinion watsoni were exposed to three treatments of copper (0.03, 0.06, 0.12 mg/L) and three treatments of zinc (0.5, 3.0, 7.0 mg/L) for a period of one week to allow behavioural changes to be observed. None of the treatments caused mortality. Treatment with 0.03 mg Cu/L caused little change in fish behaviour; however, 0.06 mg Cu/L caused increased swimming activity and breathing movements. The highest treatment of copper (0.12 mg Cu/L) caused lethargy and loss of equilibrium in C. watsoni. Similarly, the lowest concentration of zinc (0.5 mg/L) caused no visible change in fish behaviour; however, with 3.0 mg Zn/L, …

Detection Of Mutagenic-Carcinogenic Pollutants In Aquatic Systems Using Cytogenetic Methods In Fish, Mehmet Ulupinar, İbrahi̇m Okumuş

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this study, the detection of mutagenic-carcinogenic pollutants in water by using cytogenetic methods in fish was examined along with the necessity of sister chromatid exchange (SCE), anaphase aberrations (AA) and micronucleus (MN) tests for chemical analysis in aquatic systems. It has been reported that central mudminnow (Umbra limi) appear to be the most suitable species for such analysis because of its large and fewer chromosomes (2n=22) and high cell division ratio. This species also has a wide distribution, and can be easily captured and held for study. In such analysis, intestines, stomach, kidney and gill tissues stand out as …
