Five New Chironomidae (Diptera) Species For The Turkish Fauna, Nurcan Özkan

Five species were identified as new for the Turkish potamofauna of Edirne and Tekirdağ provinces from Thrace region between August 1995 and August 1996 in this study. They are Corynoneura scutellata Thienemann, 1944 (in Ergene River), Beckidia zabolotzkii (Goetghebuer, 1938) (in Meriç River), Robackia demeijerei (Kruseman, 1933) (in Meriç River and Sazlıdere Stream), Parachironomus arcuatus Goetghebuer 1919 (in Meriç River and Ergene River) and Parachironomus longiforceps Kruseman, 1933 (in Meriç River).

Research On The Herpetofauna Of Murat Mountain (Kütahya-Uşak), Adem Özdemi̇r, İbrahi̇m Baran

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this study, the amphibians and reptilians of Murat Mountain, where only mountain frogs have been investigated so far, are introduced. A total of 99 specimens from 15 different species were collected. Four of the species belong to anurans, one belongs to tortoises, six belong to lizards and four belong to the snakes group.

The Effects Of Cimetidine And Ranitidine On Kidney Cortex Of Mus Musculus Albinus, Kadri̇ye Akgün Dar

In this study, 4.3 µg/g cimetidine and 17 µg/g ranitidine were orally given to mice for two months. The effects of cimetidine and ranitidine on kidney cortical tissue were examined at light microscopical level. In both groups, it was detected that the tubules were separated by their lumen containing darkly stained remnant material. Vacuolization, destruction of apical membrane and decreased PAS positive reaction were observed in the apical membrane of proximal tubule epithelial cells. Observations On The Histomorphogical Structure Of Some Long Bones Of The Water Frog (Rana Bedriagae) From The İzmir Area, Uğur C. Eri̇şmi̇ş, Uğur Kaya, Hüseyi̇n Arikan

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Histomorphological structures of the femur and the second phalange of the second outer toe of the left frog leg were investigated using the decalcifying method in Rana bedriagae. Skeleton Growth Marks (SGMs) were clearly observed in Rana bedriagae and it was shown that the skeletochronological technique is convenient and applicable for the age determination of this species.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Muscle fiber types of the tunica muscularis externa of the upper part of the sparrow esophagus were characterised by the method of myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase (mATPase). Muscle fibers were described as type II and type III. Muscle fiber types were histochemically different from those of the esophagus of broiler ross. It is thought that this difference should be evaluated according to the functional difference between the esophagus of domestic and wild bird species.

This study was carried out to determine the effect of temperature on the development, sexual maturation time, food consumption and body weight of S. gregaria, Forsk., at 25 and 30ºC. The insects were fed on fresh wheat sprouts (FWS) and bran (B). When the temperature was increased, both developmental time and attainment time to sexual maturation were shortened. Total nymphal developmental time at 25 and 30ºC was 32 and 22 days, respectively. Similarly, the average attainment time to sexual maturity was 33 days at 30ºC, whereas it was 52 days at 25ºC. The effects of some antibiotics and antifungal agents in combination on the total protein content of young pupae of the hymenopterous endoparasitoid, Pimpla turionellae L., were investigated by rearing the larvae aseptically on chemically defined synthetic diets. These effects varied with the kinds and levels of the combination of antimicrobial agents in the diets. The combinations of antibiotics generally increased the total protein content according to their individual levels in the diets. Antifungal agent combinations caused a slight but significant increase in the total protein content. The present paper is based on the larval development of a spider crab Menaethiops nodulosus (Nobili, 1905) reared in the laboratory. The genus Menaethiops is represented by twelve species from Indo-Pacific regions including M. bicornis Alcock, 1895. Later two more species M. gadaniensis Kazmi & Tirmizi and M. nodulosus (Nobili) were added to the marine fauna of Pakistan. The ovigerous female of M. nodulosus was collected from Buleji on October 28, 1996, prezoeae and first zoeae were obtained on November 13, 1996 and the first zoeae were segregated for further experiment. Seasonal changes in sea temperature levels affect the swimming performance of fish. This study investigates if a change of 5°C from 7 to 12°C in water temperature has a significant effect on the maximum swimming performance of whiting, Merlangius merlangus, which is one of the most common species caught in the bottom trawl fisheries of the North Sea. The effect of this seasonal change on swimming performance was shown by two experiments. A new trematode genus Astioglossimetra n. gen. has been erected to accommodate an undescribed species A. karachiensis n. gen., n. sp., from Chelonia mydas of the Karachi coast. The genus name refers to its relation to the genera Astiotrema Looss and Glossimetra Mehra of the family Plagiorchiidae and subfamily Astiotrematinae.

Field studies were conducted by taking samples vertically and horizontally during a specific period of each month between April 2000 and March 2001 in Lake Terkos. A total of 28 species belonging to six families of Cladocera and 13 species from seven families of Copepoda are identified. Their known geographical distribution in Turkey have been given according to provinces.

Chromosomes Of Oedipoda Schochi Schochi And Acrotylus Insbricus (Orthoptera, Acrididae, Oedipodinae). Karyotypes And C- And G-Band Patterns, Şi̇fa Türkoğlu, Serdar Koca

Chromosomes, with detalied karyotype information (number, shape, total length, relative length, arm ratio and centromeric index) and C- and G-band patterns of two species of grasshoppers belonging to the subfamily Oedipodinae in Turkey are described. The karyotype of Oedipoda schochi schochi with 2n O = 25 (X0) comprises eight pairs of metacentric, two pairs of submetacentric, one pair of acrocentric and one pair of subacrocentric autosomes, which come from 2n O = 23 through centric fission and the metacentric X chromosome, while Acrotylus insbricus with 2n O = 23 (X0) possesses metacentric autosomes, and the metacentric X chromosome.

The individual and seasonal variations of 11 rotifer species identified in Kesikköprü Dam Lake were investigated from April 1995 to May 1996. Species-wise percentages were Polyarthra vulgaris 24.5%, Keratella quadrata 20.8%, Asplanchna priodonta 16.0%, Brachionus angularis 11.2%, Keratella cochlearis 8.8%, Synchaeta litoralis 7.0%, Lecane luna 4.0%, Notholca squamula 3.8%, Lepadella patella 1.6%, Notholca acuminata 1.4% and Colurella adriatica 0.7%. Apart from two seasonal peaks in spring and autumn, some species such as S. litoralis, L. luna, N. squamula, and C. adriatica showed smaller fluctuations other than during seasonal peaks. The toxic effects of technical grade (95 %) malathion and commercial (25 %) malathion were investigated on young (£ 24 h old) Daphnia magna in static acute toxicity tests (24 and 48 h). The culture of D. magna and toxicity tests were performed at 24 ± 1 ºC with a photoperiod of 16 h light and 8 h dark. To obtain a healthy population, the fecundity of each female in their life cycle was also investigated. Impact Of Two Sublethal Concentrations Of Copper Chloride And Chlorine On The Excretory Products Of Crab Sesarma Quadratum (Fabricius), Santhana Valarmathi, Jayapaul Azariah

Excretion in estuarine animals is considered to be an important factor in assessing their physiological status. The pattern of oxygen consumption and excretion patterns (ammonia and nitrite) in medium size mud crabs of S. quadratum (3 to 4 g weight) were studied under laboratory conditions at two sublethal concentrations of 1/10 and 1/3 of the LC_{50} value of copper chloride and chlorine. The rates of oxygen consumption and excreted products were negatively correlated to the sublethal concentrations of the toxicant. Reduced rates of oxygen consumption and excretion of ammonia and nitrite were observed when exposed to these sublethal concentrations.

This study was designed to demonstrate the microbiological qualities of cream pastries and puddings obtained from five different confectioneries in Van. A total of 175 samples, consisting of 100 pudding samples (sütlaç 25, keşkül 30, supangile 25, kazandibi 20) and 75 cream pastries (butter-cream 25, chocolate-cream 25, fruit-cream 25), were analysed. The drop plate technique was used to determine the numbers of total anaerobic bacteria, enterobactericeae, lactobacilli, pseudomonas and yeasts/moulds, and the spread plate technique was used to determine the total number of micrococci/staphylococci. The effects of various salinities and fresh water (FW) (0.4 ppt) on the growth performance, body traits and fillet composition of juvenile and young sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in FW were investigated in two separate experiments in this study. In Experiment 1, following acclimation, sea bass juveniles (9.5 ± 0.5 g) were reared in 240-L fibreglass tanks (40 x 40 x 150 cm) for 90 days in five different treatments (FW, 10, 20, 30 and 40 ppt). In this study, leptospiral antibodies were investigated by Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) and Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) in order to detect leptospirosis and serotypes which cause leptospira infection in cattle raised in Kars and Ardahan. Live and sonicated antigens prepared from Leptospira hardjo and Leptospira grippotyphosa serotypes were used. Blood samples were taken from 150 cattle under 2 years of age and 840 cattle 2 years of age or older (a total of 990) which were unvaccinated against leptospirosis in 30 rural settlements. The seasonal variation and meat composition of blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896) were investigated. Twenty (10 male, 10 female) crabs were used each season. The total weight of the samples was estimated and the ratios of crude protein, lipid, dry matter and crude ash were obtained from meat of the body and claws. Comparatively higher values of dry matter, crude ash and lipid were determined for the claw meat of males in winter. The cardiovascular/respiratory and clinical effects of a xylazine-ketamine combination or a butorphanol-ketamine combination for the induction of anaesthesia in dogs were compared. A total of 12 dogs (two groups 6 dogs each) were premedicated with either xylazine (group I) or butorphanol (group II) and anaesthetized with ketamine HCl and monitored at 0, 5, 15, 30 and 60 min after induction. Sedative effects in both groups started within 15 min. Respiratory rate was significantly decreased in group I (P < 0.05). Body temperature was significantly altered after 15 min in group I (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001). Haematological analyses indicated that there were no differences in pH values between the groups. It was concluded that butorphanol followed by ketamine was comparable with xylazine plus ketamine for the induction of anaesthesia in healthy dogs.

Protein bands of crude antigens of Hymenolepis nana were determined by SDS-PAGE and Western blotting. Thirty Swiss albino mice were allotted into two groups of 15 each as positive (infected with H. nana) and negative (non-infected with H. nana) groups. The natural infections of H. nana and other helminths were determined by centrifugal flotation of faeces. After bleeding, the mice were necropsied and their guts were examined for H. nana and other intestinal helminths. The goal of this study was to evaluate the abnormal spermatozoa rates and types of American Bronze turkeys under Turkish conditions. Semen was collected from toms by abdominal massage and pooled once a week for 10 weeks. After pooling, the semen samples were examined morphologically and mean abnormal rates and types were evaluated. A total abnormal spermatozoa rate of 17 ± 0.06% was determined.
