Relative Importance Of Food Items In Feeding Of Chondrostoma Regium Heckel, 1843, And Its Relation With The Time Of Annulus Formation, Aysun Gümüş, Mahmut Yilmaz, Nazmi̇ Polat

In this study, we analyzed the relative importance of food items of Chondrostoma regium Heckel, 1843. A total of 145 individuals were sampled between April 1993 and March 1994 in Suat Uğurlu Dam Lake. Stomach content analysis was used to determine dietary composition. Relative measures of food item quantity were estimated by two different approaches: the Index of Relative Importance (IRI) and the Geometric Index of Importance (GII). The results from these indices were compared and the most reliable way of estimating dietary composition was discussed. Navicula, Cymbella and Synedra were the most frequently consumed organisms. Oreodytes septentrionalis (Gyllenhal, 1826) and Oreodytes davisi (Curtis, 1831) are recorded in Turkey for the first time and are reviewed according to our specimens and their distributions around the world.

Three Rhizopulvinaria species, Rhizopulvinaria pyrethri Borchsenius, Rhizopulvinaria turkestanica (Archangelskaya), and Rhizopulvinaria viridis Borchsenius, were identified on wild flora in eastern Anatolia in 1997. All of them are new records for the Turkish scale insect fauna.

Androgenesis: The Best Tool For Manipulation Of Fish Genomes, Minal P. Bhise, Tariq A. Khan
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Androgenesis involves the development of an organism with only paternal chromosomes. The induction of androgenesis using diploid sperm, highly effective UV-irradiation of egg, dispermy using heterologous eggs, the possibility of producing supermales for all male production and the recovery of cryopreserved sperm are recent technological developments in androgenesis in fish. However, few researchers have successfully produced viable diploid androgens in fish. The authors made an attempt to induce androgenesis in the common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) and the results are discussed along with the potential applications of androgenesis in conserving fish genomes and current knowledge on inducing androgenesis in fish.

Chromosomes Of Oedipoda Schochi Schochi And Acrotylus Insbricus (Orthoptera, Acrididae, Oedipodinae). Karyotypes And C- And G-Band Patterns, Şi̇fa Türkoğlu, Serdar Koca
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Chromosomes, with detalied karyotype information (number, shape, total length, relative length, arm ratio and centromeric index) and C- and G-band patterns of two species of grasshoppers belonging to the subfamily Oedipodinae in Turkey are described. The karyotype of Oedipoda schochi schochi with 2n O = 25 (X0) comprises eight pairs of metacentric, two pairs of submetacentric, one pair of acrocentric and one pair of subacrocentric autosomes, which come from 2n O = 23 through centric fission and the metacentric X chromosome, while Acrotylus insbricus with 2n O = 23 (X0) possesses metacentric autosomes, and the metacentric X chromosome.

Seasonal Fluctuation In The Rotifer Fauna Of Kesikköprü Dam Lake (Ankara, Turkey), Si̇bel Yi̇ği̇t

The individual and seasonal variations of 11 rotifer species identified in Kesikköprü Dam Lake were investigated from April 1995 to May 1996. Species-wise percentages were Polyarthra vulgaris 24.5%, Keratella quadrata 20.8%, Asplanchna priodonta 16.0%, Brachionus angularis 11.2%, Keratella cochlearis 8.8%, Synchaeta litoralis 7.0%, Lecane luna 4.0%, Notholca squamula 3.8%, Lepadella patella 1.6%, Notholca acuminata 1.4% and Colurella adriatica 0.7%. Apart from two seasonal peaks in spring and autumn, some species such as S. litoralis, L. luna, N. squamula, and C. adriatica showed smaller fluctuations other than during seasonal peaks. Water temperature (°C), pH, dissolved oxygen concentration (mg/l) and the community structure of the macrobenthos of a small southeast Texas sand-pit (Barry's) lake were studied from June 1995 to February 1996, which covered climatic extremes. The lake was a warm monomictic lake and no anoxic conditions were observed at any depth during the entire study period. A total of 50 taxa and 5614 individuals of macrobenthos were collected. The dominant organisms were Chaoborus punctipennis (Say), Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri (Claparede), and Dero obtusa (Udekem). The only established populations at 6.5 m were Chaoborus punctipennis, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, and Chironomus sp. Species diversity ranged …

The toxic effects of technical grade (95 %) malathion and commercial (25 %) malathion were investigated on young (£ 24 h old) Daphnia magna in static acute toxicity tests (24 and 48 h). The culture of D. magna and toxicity tests were performed at 24 ± 1 ºC with a photoperiod of 16 h light and 8 h dark. To obtain a healthy population, the fecundity of each female in their life cycle was also investigated. The growth features of tench, Tinca tinca, in Bayındır Dam Lake were studied between March 1999 and February 2000. A total of 100 samples (51 males and 49 females) were examined. Age in both sexes ranged from age group I to V. The sex ratio was 1.04 and 1.0 for males and females respectively. The fork length and weight of females and males varied from 15.2 to 33.2 cm and 51.4 to 650.7 g and 15.7 to 34.7 cm and 52.8 to 822.6 g respectively. The most reliable bony structure and method were investigated for age determination of shad (Alosa pontica Eichwald, 1838) inhabiting the Black Sea. Therefore, five bony structures such as scale, vertebra, otolith, opercle and subopercle were removed from 240 individuals collected from April 1998 to April 1999. Each bony structure was prepared for age determination by different techniques, and examined by binocular microscope. Mean ages were estimated for each bony structure-reader combination and the precision of age estimated from multiple readings was evaluated. Furthermore, the error of ageing was calculated. Crossbred steers (n = 30) were used to explore and compare tenderness improvements in beef round and sirloin muscles resulting from various methods of pre-rigor skeletal separations. Animals were slaughtered according to industry procedures, and at 60 min postmortem one of six treatments was applied to each side: A) control, B) saw pelvis at the sirloin round junction, C) separate the pelvic-femur joint, D) saw femur at mid-point, E) combination of B and C, and F) combination of B and D. This study determined whether there is a logical point of value change, related to either tenderness or consumer acceptance, at which to separate the beef carcass within the rib/chuck region. Rib/chuck rolls (RCR); (n = 30) consisting of the ribeye roll and chuck eye roll subprimals (2nd through 12th rib locations) were cut into 22 steaks each (two steaks per rib location), and Warner-Bratzler shear force and consumer purchase preference were evaluated for steaks at each rib location. Since 1994, wildlife biologists and wildlife health specialists have worked to determine the cause of avian vacuolar myelinopathy (AVM), a neurologic disease of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) and other birds. The causes of morbidity and mortality in wildlife typically are determined through both antemortem and postmortem examinations, combined with ancillary tests for microbiological organisms, toxicants and other etiologies. However, the etiology of AVM has not been determined yet, despite extensive diagnostic investigations, including examinations for common disease agents, as well as infrequent or unusual causes of mortality. The objectives of this study were to compare refinery-related petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations in nestling tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) and nestling house wrens (Troglodytes aedon) at sites along the North Platte River Casper, Wyoming in 1997 and 1998; and to determine if contaminants were present in concentrations that could adversely affect the birds. Because trace element concentrations, mixed function oxidase activity, and the variation in DNA are often associated with petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations in birds, each was measured as indicators of petroleum contamination. An experiment was conducted to assess the responsiveness of weanling pigs to increased dietary concentrations of niacin and vitamin B12. The purpose of the experiment was to determine if the niacin and vitamin B12 requirements of nursery pigs are greater than the NRC (1998) recommendations for 11 to 22 lb pigs. A demonstration was carried out for 15 months at a 1,200-head growing- finishing facility in Holt County, Neb. The purpose was to document the impact of diet formulation on phosphorus excretion and the associated land area needed to utilize the phosphorus in the accumulated manure. The demonstration facility had four 300-head rooms. Prior to the demonstration, pigs in all rooms were fed diets formulated to contain 0.55-0.57% total phosphorus for all phases of growth. An experiment was conducted to determine whether there were differences in performance between two commercial sources of phytase when added to corn and soybean meal-based diets prior to pelleting. Pelleted diets investigated for growing-finishing barrows of high-lean-gain-potential included: 1) University of Nebraska recommended formulations; 2) diets formulated to contain 0.1% less available phosphorus than recommended; 3) diets formulated with 500 FYT/kg added phytase from Ronozyme-P®; 4) diets formulated with 750 FYT/kg added phytase from Ronozyme-P®; 5) diets formulated with 500 FTU/kg added phytase from Natuphos®; and 6) diets formulated with 750 FTU/kg added phytase from Natuphos®. In modern pork production it is important to maximize the animal’s potential for daily lean gain by increasing the body protein deposition with as little wastage of the ingested amino acids as possible. Therefore, it is important to maximize the efficiency with which dietary amino acids are used for protein deposition or lean gain. This efficiency is measured by using nitrogen balance studies or comparative slaughter procedures. Pigs treated alike vary in performance due to their different genetic makeup and to environmental effect we cannot completely control. When a group of pigs is randomly allotted to treatments it is nearly impossible to get an “equal” group of pigs on each treatment. This experiment was conducted to evaluate growth performance and carcass quality measurements in growing-finishing barrows assigned to different feed budget systems. Forty-eight barrows with an initial body weight of 47.3 lb were randomly allotted to one of three different feed budget systems. The experiment was continued until the average body weight was 270 lb, at which time all pigs were slaughtered. Growth performance and real-time ultrasound measurements were taken biweekly, except for the final period, which was 24 days. This experiment was conducted to evaluate growth performance and carcass quality measurements in growing-finishing pigs fed diets containing either Roundup Ready® corn expressing the CP4 EPSPS protein, the parental control corn, or two commercial sources of nongenetically modified corn. The experiment used 72 barrows and 72 gilts with an initial body weight of 50 lb. The pigs were allotted to a randomized complete block design with a 2 x 4 factorial arrangement of treatments (two sexes x four corn hybrids). In two studies, mice were fed diets containing either individual conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers or a mixture of isomers in the presence or absence of dietary essential fatty acids. Mice fed the C18:2 Δ10,12 CLA isomer lost as much body fat as mice fed a mixture of isomers. This effect was not observed when the mice were fed the C18:2 Δ9,11 isomer or when feed intake was restricted. The loss of body fat was much greater in mice consuming an essential fatty acid deficient diet versus a control diet. This supports our hypothesis that for CLA to deplete body …

Economic returns per pig for F1 and terminal cross barrows and gilts of the NE Index line when fed a diet with or without PAYLEAN® at 18 g per ton for 28 d before slaughter were compared. Although not significant, terminal cross pigs with 25% Line I genes were more profitable than F1 pigs with 50% Line I genes and gilts were more profitable than barrows. Several scenarios were modeled to evaluate the economic returns from feeding PAYLEAN®. Increased profits were similar across lines and sexes but varied depending on whether intransit death losses were considered treatment effects. …

The pig’s small intestinal structure and function is altered during the days that follow weaning. As a consequence, the digestive and absorptive capacity of weanling pigs may decrease during this period, and this may be partially responsible for the post-weaning growth lag. Additionally, health benefits may be associated with an improved small intestinal structure and function during the early post-weaning period. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of crystalline glutamine and (or) diet complexity on small intestine villus height and growth performance of 18-day-old pigs. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of genetic line, diet, sex, slaughter weight and location within the slab on the proximate composition and color of bacon lean and fat. Bacon slabs manufactured from bellies of 756 barrows and gilts of six different genetic lines equally distributed among four feeding regimes, with differing lysine levels, and three weight groups and processed into sliced retail bacon (nine slices/inch) were used. The objective was to estimate responses in growth and carcass traits in the NE Index line (I) that was selected 19 generations for increased litter size. Responses in pure-line, F1 and 3-way cross litters were compared. In Exp 1, 694 gilts that were retained for breeding, including 448 I and control (C) and 246 F1 I and C by Danbred™ Landrace (L), were evaluated.
