Distribution Of Aeschynomene Virginica And Bacopa Innominata Along The Proposed Alternative Routes For The Sr629 Mattaponi River Crossing Upgrade Project, James E. Perry

Reports

Four wetland macrophytes of interest are found in the region of the proposed upgrade of the State Route 629 bridge crossing of the Mattaponi River. Two of these are State listed endangered or threatened species: the sensitive joint vetch (Aeschynomene virginica) and the mat-forming water-hyssop (Bacopa innominata). Two species, Long's bittercress (Cardamine longii) and Parker's pip~wort (Eriocaulon parkeri) are included on the Virginia watch list (Ludwig, 1992).

The purpose of this study was to locate and describe plant populations of the specified species (i.e. determine the size, spatial distribution, and density of extant populations) within a specified range of each …

Life Cycle Studies Of Perkinsus Marinus : Host Specificity : Final Report, Frank O. Perkins Jan 1992

Life Cycle Studies Of Perkinsus Marinus : Host Specificity : Final Report, Frank O. Perkins

Reports

This project was initiated because it is important to know whether molluscs other than Crassostrea virginica can serve as reservoirs of infection of C. virginica by Perkinsus marinus or other species of Perkinsus when one is designing strategies to culture the oysters in waters where the disease organism is present.

Includes atlas of Perkinsus spp. structure.

Ecology And Dynamics Of River Herring Larvae In The Pamunkey River. Virginia: : June 1, 1989 - December 31, 1991, E. N. Sismour, Joseph G. Loesch Jan 1992

Ecology And Dynamics Of River Herring Larvae In The Pamunkey River. Virginia: : June 1, 1989 - December 31, 1991, E. N. Sismour, Joseph G. Loesch

Reports

The early life histories of anadromous herrings (Alosa species) in tidal freshwater are poorly understood. Knowledge of the ecology of anadromous herring larvae in tidal freshwater ecosystems is important in order to understand factors which cause population fluctuations, to mitigate potential adverse effects of modifications to these systems, and to facilitate restoration of populations. This investigation was undertaken to examine the distribution and relative abundance of larval river herring (alewife, Alosa pseudoharengus, and blueback herring, A. aestivalis) and their potential zooplankton prey in tidal freshwater of the Pamunkey River, Virginia, and to quantify growth of larvae between locations that may …

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Waters: 1991 Annual Summary, Bruce J. Barber Jan 1992

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Waters: 1991 Annual Summary, Bruce J. Barber

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts surveys of oyster spatfall (or "setting") in Virginia waters throughout the summer reproductive period. This survey provides an estimate of the potential of a particular area for receiving a "strike" or set of oysters on the bottom and helps define the timing of setting events. Information obtained from this effort is valuable to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) for its shell repletion program, and to private oyster growers, both of which are interested in maximizing the timing of shell planting. In addition, by maintaining a long-term data base, trends in spatfall …

Fish Assemblages At A Deep-Water Sewage Disposal Site (Dwd-106) : A Final Contract Report, J. A. Musick, J. C. Defosse, E. D. Grogan Jan 1992

Fish Assemblages At A Deep-Water Sewage Disposal Site (Dwd-106) : A Final Contract Report, J. A. Musick, J. C. Defosse, E. D. Grogan

Reports

Deep-water dumpsite 106 is located over the continental slope and rise about 106 miles east of New Jersey (Fig. 1). From March 1986 to July 1992 approximately eight million wet metric tons of sewage sludge were disposed there per year (Robertson and Redford, 1992). Because of the potential impact of this dumping on deep-sea ecosystems, NOAA/NMFS contracted the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William and Mary (VIMS) to make otter-trawl collections in and around DWD 106 in 1990 and 1991. Specific objectives of these collections were:

1. To sample the demersal megafauna, especially fishes;

2. To provide frozen …
