The Evaluation Of The Dairy Cow, George Gardner May 1926

The Evaluation Of The Dairy Cow, George Gardner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The accurate appraisal of property is in a great many cases a difficult task. A savings account in a bank may be evaluated with high precision. A business building in a large city may bring in returns sufficiently steady and permanent so that a careful appraiser with a reasonable knowledge of depreciation losses to be anticipated might fix a value without very much error.

The Effect Of Alternate Freezing And Thawing On Impermeable Alfalfa And Dodder Seeds, A. R. Midgley May 1926

The Effect Of Alternate Freezing And Thawing On Impermeable Alfalfa And Dodder Seeds, A. R. Midgley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It is surprising to know the small amount of work that has been done on alternate freezing and thawing of seeds. Many experiments, however, have been conducted to see the effect of very low temperatures on seeds and to notice the effect it had on their vitality. Some experimenters subjected seeds to temperatures as low as liquid hydrogen with very interesting results but in very few cases, if any, was the effect of alternate freezing and thawing studied.

The work that follows deals directly with the effects of alternate freezing and thawing on impermeable seeds of alfalfa and of dodder. …

Correlated Inheritance In Wheat, George Stewart May 1926

Correlated Inheritance In Wheat, George Stewart

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since the rediscovery of Mendel's law in 1900, there have been many studies of inheritance in wheat. Of these rather numerous investigations, however, only a few have consisted of correlated studies of various characters on the same plant.

Inheritance of awns and of spike density have received some attention but the studies have hardly more than indicated the problem. Both have been thought by some to be rather simple in their inheritance, and in some crosses without doubt such is the case, but lately there has come a recognition of considerable complexity.

Density. As here used, "density" refers to …

Correlation Studies In Wheat, Joseph Reed May 1926

Correlation Studies In Wheat, Joseph Reed

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Considerable work has been done by plant breeders and investigators in the study of individual plant characters, but only a few have attempted to work out correlations between characters in crop plants. One reason for this seems to be, that many investigators have felt that correlation studies were of very little practical value. This attitude was due perhaps to the interpretation given correlation data, especially the nature of the casual agency or agencies to which the correlation was attributed. Most of our plant breeders however, have been too busy working on experiments with single characters and have given little or …

A Text And Manual Of Timpanogos Mosses, Seville Flowers Jan 1926

A Text And Manual Of Timpanogos Mosses, Seville Flowers

Theses and Dissertations

This present paper is an attempt to open the field of bryology in the state of Utah. It is necessarily a limited treatment both from the standpointof the number of species and the area. It represents the efforts of one summer's collection and the preparation of the manuscript and illustrations. The collection was taken at Mount Timpanogosby the students of the Alpine Summer School of the Brigham Young University during the 1925 session.

An Ecological Study Of Timpanogos Creek From Aspen Grove To Wildwood, Marion L. Harris Jan 1926

An Ecological Study Of Timpanogos Creek From Aspen Grove To Wildwood, Marion L. Harris

Theses and Dissertations

Ecology may be oonsidered as one of the vital parts of botany, since there are two ultimate facts in this science; namely, the plant and its habitat . The habitat is made up of the physical factors that control function. At Timpanogos there are so many different habitats, that the chief problem is not that of finding a problem to study, but rather that of selecting one from the many. The purpose of this paper is to point out some of the interesting features that are found in a study of Timpanogos Creek from Aspen Grove to Wildwood.

The Effect Of Hydrogen Ion Concentration Of Solution Upon The Absorption Of Water By The Hard Seed Of Alfalfa, A. L. Starr Jul 1925

The Effect Of Hydrogen Ion Concentration Of Solution Upon The Absorption Of Water By The Hard Seed Of Alfalfa, A. L. Starr

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The hard seed coat found on some seeds has long been an object of interest to experimentors in seed germination and a great deal of work has been done on various phases of the problem. Some have attacked it with the idea of hastening germination, while others have been interested in determining the nature of the seed coat and isolating the factors which make it impermeable under ordinary favorable germination conditions.

The Relation Of Light To Soil Moisture Phenomena And To Water Transmission In Plants, Leon B. Linford Jun 1925

The Relation Of Light To Soil Moisture Phenomena And To Water Transmission In Plants, Leon B. Linford

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An attempt was made in this laboratory to measure the pressure or capillary potential of soils by a vapor pressure method. The experiment was carried out by placing small cans of soil in dessicators with solutions of known vapor pressure in the bottom. These dessicators were immersed in a constant temperature water bath. It was hoped that by this method the vapor pressure of the soils could be determined and the pressure potentials calculated as will be explained in a later part of this paper. The results were disappointing because the wet soils in dessicators over pure water dried out …

A Study Of Onion Varieties, A. L. Wilson May 1925

The object of this thesis is to present the results of four year's studies of onion varieties conducted by the author at the Davis County Farm together with a partial review of the literature of the subject, setting forth the history, the botany, the commercial importance and some of the varietal studies in other states and Canada.

The Alkali And Water Relations Of Atriplex Carnosa, A. R. Croft May 1925

The Alkali And Water Relations Of Atriplex Carnosa, A. R. Croft

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The question of alkali has many phases. Much work has been done on this important phase of soil science, particularly as it affects the agricultural products and native vegetation. These two phases of the subject naturally forced themselves upon men who tilled the soil for a livlihood and in late years thay have occupied the attention of many soil investigators. The reliability of this indicator value of native vegetation, (1) on a given soil has long since been established in a general way. This generalization has been used rather extensively in making a hasty survey of large possible agricultural areas. …

Scientific Discoveries Concerned With Pathogenic Micro-Organisms, Matilda Mary Steinbrecher Sep 1924

Scientific Discoveries Concerned With Pathogenic Micro-Organisms, Matilda Mary Steinbrecher

Bachelors’ Theses

Stand where you choose some calm night and look up into the great dome of the sky. Realize that those countless stars, once believed to regulate our destinies, have been proven by science to be other worlds more or less like ours. Let your thoughts wander on to objects near at hand. You see the rocks and soil and plants as did mankind for ages back; but where they not so long back saw nought else, you see rocks breaking into fertile soil and realize that minute living beings are responsible. You have come to understand that all the nitrogen …

The Theory Of Spontaneous Generation, Arthur Thomas Kuesel Jun 1924

The Theory Of Spontaneous Generation, Arthur Thomas Kuesel

Bachelors’ Theses

The theories concerning the origin of life on this planet have been many and varied all down the ages. In the prescientific ages, if we may be allowed to designate those years as such, before science was as exacting and searching sit is now, practically all the theories advanced by the philosophers at the time have since been proven to be fallacies and all of them save one, the Theory of Spontaneous Generation have been discarded into the limbo of mistaken notions.

The Development Of The Seedling And The Tissues Of Pinus Monophylla, Irene Mary Keeley Jun 1924

The Development Of The Seedling And The Tissues Of Pinus Monophylla, Irene Mary Keeley

Bachelors’ Theses

Considering plants as a whole, there are four principal divisions, the Tallophytes, the Bryophytes, the Pteridophytes and the Spermatophytes. The latter, or highest division of the plant kingdom, comprises two classes; the Angiosperms and the Cymnosperms, or seed-bearing plants. The Gymnosperms, of which there are four hundred living species, are the most widely distributed of any plants throughout the United States and tropical countries. We need not limit our knowledge to recent years for, Geologists tell us of their early discoveries of fossil representatives. This class is subdivided into different groups, the Coniferales being the most important and abundant. The …

The Compatibility Of Church And Science, John H. Casey Jun 1924

The Compatibility Of Church And Science, John H. Casey

Bachelors’ Theses

The intellectual fashion, if such there be, obtained quite a few years ago to maintain that there was no such a thing as compatibility between religion and science. Like all fashions, it has passed out of vogue and the inherent and foolish fallacy behind it has been repeatedly an effectively exposed. However, it has exhibited another characteristic of all fashions by returning and finding favor in some quarters. Fortunately, its second inaugural is not so auspicious or general since the original style, while it caught the popular fancy, was too unmercifully denounced and derided to allow for a second successful …

A Study Of The Effect Of The Age Of Parents On The Ability Of Dairy Cows To Produce Milk And Butterfat, J. Howard Maughan May 1924

A Study Of The Effect Of The Age Of Parents On The Ability Of Dairy Cows To Produce Milk And Butterfat, J. Howard Maughan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The question of the possible effect of the age of parents on the quality of the offspring which they produce has long been a disputed one. It is held by some that the ages of both parents act together in determining the quality of offspring. There are others who maintain that the age of the dam only is a factor and still others who believe that only the age of the sire need be considered in this connection.

Loss Of Minerals In Cooking Vegetables, Sadie O. Morris May 1924

Loss Of Minerals In Cooking Vegetables, Sadie O. Morris

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It has long been recognized that vegetables contain certain necessary substances which are essential to the human diet. Considerable attention has been given the different foods as to their economic value to human nutrition, however the information concerning the preparation of foods as to their nutritive losses is as yet inadequate. Considerable research work has been done in certain directions and some valuable data accumulated as to the economic losses contained in the waste or discarded portions of the food material. Several investigators have rather accurately determined not only the economic, but also the nutritive losses, especially those which occur …

Inheritance Of Chaff Color, Head Shape, And Grain Texture In Wheat, Delmar C. Tingey May 1924

Inheritance Of Chaff Color, Head Shape, And Grain Texture In Wheat, Delmar C. Tingey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The data presented in this thesis are the results obtained from a study of the F2 and F3 generations from a cross between the wheat varieties, Dicklow and Hard Federation. Toward the end of the summer of 1922 this problem was assigned to me by Professor George Stewart. The plants then growing in the field were in the F2 generation, the cross having been made in 1920 by Professor Stewart. The chief purpose of the cross was to improve the grain quality of spring-irrigated wheat by the application of Mendelian principles in such a way as to …

Qualitative Mendelian Inheritance In Wheat Hybrids, Aaron F. Bracken May 1924

Qualitative Mendelian Inheritance In Wheat Hybrids, Aaron F. Bracken

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Two methods of crop improvement are open to the plant breeder. Pure-line selection, which might be mentioned first, deals with the natural variability in plant populations. Thru selection, isolation, and comparative yield tests superior individuals are located. Nothing, however, can be added which the plant does not already have. Here hybridization provides a new starting point. Increased variation, new combination of characters, and thus greater opportunities are provided for improvement. The present investigation has for its purpose a study of the latter phase of this subject.

In certain parts of Utah the straw from dry-land wheat is used for feeding …

The Effect Of Dry Heating On Alfalfa Seed And Adulterants, Ernest V. Staker May 1924

The Effect Of Dry Heating On Alfalfa Seed And Adulterants, Ernest V. Staker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The relationship of artificial heating to the germination of seeds has been a subject of more or less interest for the last 75 years. Like other research work, experimenters first had their attention called to the problem largely as the result of innate curiosity. They were interested in the result as measured by germinative power, of the application to seeds of different amounts of heat for varying periods of time, consequently many divergent and sundry experiments were carried out. Seeds of a large number of plants have been subjected to tests and the results recorded. The investigations include the effect …

A Study Of Size Inheritance In Wheat, Peter Nelson May 1924

A Study Of Size Inheritance In Wheat, Peter Nelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The results presented in this paper are from data accumulated by a study of the F3 generation of a cross between the two varieties, Sevier and New Zealand wheat. This cross was made during the summer of 1920 by Professor George Stewart with the object of combining the high-yielding power of Sevier with the strong straw of New Zealand. In the fall of 1922 the problem was assigned to me, at which time I selected about 150 superior plants, possessing the desired characteristics, at least so far as appearance was concerned. Since then these plants and the F3 generation have …

A Contribution To Our Knowledge Of The Aphididae Of Utah, George Knowlton May 1924

A Contribution To Our Knowledge Of The Aphididae Of Utah, George Knowlton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

There are many groups of insects in Utah that have not been touched in a systematic way up to the present time, and to the knowledge of the author no systematic work has been done on the homopterous family Aphididae.

Due to the very common occurrence of the aphids, or plant lice, and the need for a simple key that would aid in the determination of these insects, this work was commenced in June 1923, continuous work being carried on in collecting, determining, drawing and describing, up to the present time.

Normal Spread Between Local And Terminal Market Prices For Sheep, Von T. Ellsworth May 1924

Normal Spread Between Local And Terminal Market Prices For Sheep, Von T. Ellsworth

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The consuming world must look to eight nations for 68 per cent of its supply of sheep and sheep products, as shown by the accompanying chart and table No. 1. Australia leads other nations with 19 per cent, while the United states follows with 8. 7 per cent of the world's sheep population. The nature of the industry confines it to the more sparsely populated regions, and areas ranking high in cheap grazing lands.

Inheritance Studies In Kanred X Martin And In G-149 X Ridit, Myron T. Hansen May 1924

Inheritance Studies In Kanred X Martin And In G-149 X Ridit, Myron T. Hansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The studies here reported involve two crosses, one of which was between a pure line of Kanred and a pure line of Martin from a bunt resistant selection. The other was between a pure line of G-149, a rust-resistant segregate from Sevier x Dicklow, and a pure line of Ridit. These were both economic breeding projects made in an effort to combine the good commercial qualities of Kanred and G-149 with the high bunt resistance of Martin and Ridit, respectively.

These crosses also furnished, as a by-product, some good genetic data, as in each cross one parent was fully awned …

Field Studies Of The Control Of The Sugar Beet Nematode. (1920-24). (Heterodera Schachtii Schmidt)., Alfred H. Bateman May 1924

Field Studies Of The Control Of The Sugar Beet Nematode. (1920-24). (Heterodera Schachtii Schmidt)., Alfred H. Bateman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The dire consequences of nematode invasion have been graphically depicted by Spiegler (1907), who says, the beet industry was at its heyday during the seventies. Nor satisfied with the land already in cultivation, the farmer plowed fertile lands along the border of the streams, wherein to grow beets, obtaining in some cases of 20 to 27 tons an acre.

Critique Of Influence Of Mineral Manures Upon The Mineral And Nitrogen Composition Of Plants, Dan Nelson Apr 1924

Critique Of Influence Of Mineral Manures Upon The Mineral And Nitrogen Composition Of Plants, Dan Nelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Variation in quality of plants of the same species has been known to exist for a long time. The influences bringing about such variation have been studied only comparatively recently. Quantity production has been given the greatest amount of attention as a rule, the beneficial results from the use of manures being judged by the quantity of produce. Some plants, however, varied so widely in composition, and the variations were of such paramount importance, that the influences affecting quality began to receive some attention. Of this type of plants may be mentioned sugar-beets and tobacco. There was also the hope …

Black-Leaf, A New Fungous Disease Of The Pea, M. B. Linford Apr 1924

Black-Leaf, A New Fungous Disease Of The Pea, M. B. Linford

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the middle of July, 1921, a leaf-spot disease was observed in fields of late crop canning peas (Pisum sativum L.) in the neighborhood of Smithfield, Cache County, Utah. To Professor B. L. Richards who was first to examine affected plants in detail it appeared to be new, differing distinctly from any described disease which he recalled.

Extreme Evolution Is Absurd And Moderate Evolution Is Not Yet Established, Marie Georgiana Blommer Apr 1924

Extreme Evolution Is Absurd And Moderate Evolution Is Not Yet Established, Marie Georgiana Blommer

Bachelors’ Theses

In the world of literature and science many records containing startling theories are to be found. Among these is the doctrine of Evolution. Many assure us that Science compels us to believe in Evolution. An explanation of the terms must be clearly understood to avoid a fallacious use of terms. Professor Huxley, who follows Hume, declares that Science is "nothing but trained and organized commonsense." The term is applied to physical science or "that whose province is the observation of phenomena and inferences directly deducible from them." The term "Evolution" is often differently understood. In its literal sense it is …

A Study Of The Tissues Of Leaves Of Certain Angiosperms, Amybelle Halbert Brady Jun 1923

A Study Of The Tissues Of Leaves Of Certain Angiosperms, Amybelle Halbert Brady

The leaves used for the study of the tissues were those of the Oleander, Ficus, Ivy, Cyperus and the Aristolochia. Portions of the leaves used were cut into rectangular pieces, about one centimeter long and one half centimeter wide, each piece including a portion of a large vein and its subsidiary veinlets. The material was placed into chrome acetic acid solution. After twenty four hours it was a shed in running water for twelve hours and then dehydrated by means of alcohol, and was then imbedded in paraffin. The sections used for the study were cut from 12 to 15 …

Improvement Of Small Grains By Pure Line Selection, Dilworth Walker May 1923

Improvement Of Small Grains By Pure Line Selection, Dilworth Walker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The present economic status of grain farming in the United States calls for adjustments in various ways. Legislation, such as price fixing, can do very little. Adjustment of acreage along with improved methods of marketing can do much. But improvement of the grains grown through breeding processes to increase the yields per acre and improve the milling quality, will render a service of permanent value, since all of the results appear in the profit column.
