A Study Of The Variations In The Growth Of Blue Grama Grass From Seed Produced In Various Sections Of The Great Plains Region, Andrew Riegel Aug 1939

A Study Of The Variations In The Growth Of Blue Grama Grass From Seed Produced In Various Sections Of The Great Plains Region, Andrew Riegel

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

During the past 7 years the Great Plains Region, with its "dust bowl", has been the scene of unparalleled activity in the fields of range management and erosion control. The people of this short grass area are extremely conscious of the need for a sound, practical program of conservation that will revegetate the wasted pasture and cultivated land, which will aid materially in preserving the eroding soil. Many problems have arisen as the program of conserving the soil and the vegetation has progressed.

Origin And Development Of Tissues In The Root Of Daucus Carota, L., M. Gerald Vodde Aug 1939

Origin And Development Of Tissues In The Root Of Daucus Carota, L., M. Gerald Vodde

Bachelors’ Theses

When botanists of the seventeenth century began their anatomical investigations of plants, their attention was quite naturally centered on the parts of the plant which they most readily observed growing above the ground. The Englishman, Robert Hooke (1661), revolutionized the botanical sciences when he announced his discovery of the fact that plant tissues are composed of cavities which he called cells. Many workers enthusiastically took up the study of plant tissues and the individual cells of which these tissues are composed. Progress was rather slow, and it was not until approximately two hundred years later that the cell theory was …

The Pro-Embryo And The Embryo Of Chara, Mary William Saller

Bachelors’ Theses

From earliest times the Charales have drawn the attention of Botanists. Their structure and affinities have led to the most interesting and comprehensive research projects. However, the earliest results, in the light of present day research, differ particularly in one important respect; namely, the origin of the embryo.

A History Of The Changes In Population Of Certain Mammals In Western Kansas, Floyd L. Carter Jul 1939

A History Of The Changes In Population Of Certain Mammals In Western Kansas, Floyd L. Carter

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

This particular study has been restricted to certain mammals in western Kansas, including some on which there is little information, and others which observers would be most likely to notice in everyday life. For several years the writer has been vitally interested in the animal life in Kansas. Therefore, when the need for a study of western Kansas mammals was presented to him in the summer of 1936, the problem of this study was selected. It is hoped that this report will suggest to ecologists, historians, and others, further studies, including reasons for the changes here-in shown. What have been …

The Skull Of Squalus Acanthias, Allan J. Blake Jul 1939

The Skull Of Squalus Acanthias, Allan J. Blake

Bachelors’ Theses

The spiny dogfishes (Squalus) inhabit the North and South temperate zones; they have no anal fins; the points of the small teeth are deflected laterally so ·chat the inner margin forms a cutting edge. Squalus Acanthius is very abundant in British waters and off the Atlantic coast of North America. This group has five gill openings and two dorsal fins each of which is typically preceded by a spine. It reaches a length of four feet, and is a great nuisance to fisherman, eating fish and getting caught in lines or in nets. They are all viviparous. Many …

Plants And Animals Used As Sources Of Dye, Paint, And Skin Dressing In The Southwest, Mary Dennis

Biology ETDs

The area comprising the Southwest is somewhat disputed by different authors, but some idea of its extent and general features as well as some conception of the ethnology in relation to the tribes within the area is needed for an understanding of the scope of this investigation.

Notes On The Origin And Development Of Zea Mays, Martin William Fleck Jun 1939

Notes On The Origin And Development Of Zea Mays, Martin William Fleck

Biology ETDs

A combination of many and varied circumstances gives an unusual interest to the origin and natural relationships of Zea mays, although investigation of this sort does not always have an immediate utilitarian objective. But, this type of investigation must of necessity project itself into the remote, and sometimes obscure, past where attention becomes focused on many moot questions. Such intriguing problems as the relative antiquity of agriculture in the Old World, the length of time requisite for the development of maize as a human food stuff, and new ideas concerning techniques of aboriginal agriculture may perhaps be solved by information …

A Comparative Study Of The Skull And Long Bones Of The More Common Small Mammals Of Bernalillo County, New Mexico, Robert Theodore Fincke Jun 1939

A Comparative Study Of The Skull And Long Bones Of The More Common Small Mammals Of Bernalillo County, New Mexico, Robert Theodore Fincke

Biology ETDs

The identification of animals or parts of animals without the aid of external characteristics is confusing problem in many fields of zoology. This is especially true in some studies as life histories and the food habits of predators. A problem of this type is even more confusing in New Mexico because relatively little work has been completed on the taxonomy and the distribution of the native fauna.

The Food Of The Frog, Paul Schmitt Jun 1939

The Food Of The Frog, Paul Schmitt

Bachelors’ Theses

All living organisms whether they be the smallest single cells or the largest mammals demand nourishment for their multifarious physiological processes. Popular and pseudoscientific thinkers and writers speak of nutrition in terms of food consumed, while true scientific investigators consider nutrition in relation to the actual assimilation of the components of food called proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.

The Histology Of The Grog's Tongue (Rana Pipiens), Michael William Mille Jun 1939

The Histology Of The Grog's Tongue (Rana Pipiens), Michael William Mille

Bachelors’ Theses

The tongue is generally represented in all vertebrates although it varies widely in the extent to which it is developed. Among the fish it occurs in its most primitive condition. It is called a primary tongue and is merely a fleashy fold of dense connective tissue developed from the floor of the mouth between the hyoid and mandibular arches, the hyoid frequently extending into it and supporting it. It is incapable of motion except as moved by the supporting skeleton for it lacks intrinsic muscles. It is sensory, having both tactile and gustatory functions. It is often papillose, and in …

Staining Techniques In The Study Of The Blood, Donald E. Winnik May 1939

Staining Techniques In The Study Of The Blood, Donald E. Winnik

Bachelors’ Theses

Since the invention of the microscope, the study of the blood and its constituents has been a major interests of histologists and hematologists. The vast amount of material written about the subject could not have been accomplished without the development and use of staining techniques which made possible a more precise observation of the nature of the blood. At the present time there are many procedures and stains which vary greatly in their application and use. It is the purpose of this thesis to review these many methods and catalogue them according to their application in the blood techniques.

The Ecology Of Agropyron Inerme On Protected And Heavily Grazed Range Land In Cache Valley, Utah, Wallace R. Hanson May 1939

The Ecology Of Agropyron Inerme On Protected And Heavily Grazed Range Land In Cache Valley, Utah, Wallace R. Hanson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the past decade much attention has been attracted to the great range lands of the West. The inherently low productivity of these arid lands coupled with abnormal drought and constantly heavy use by livestock because of lack of grazing control, have caused these lands to become greatly depleted over most of the West. That the vegetation on most range land in the intermountain states is depleted appreciably is evident to the careful observer. Undoubtedly the vegetation of much of the range has decreased in quantity, but more serious in many cases is the decrease in quality. Valuable forage species …

The Rise And Development Of The Megagametophyte In Yucca Angustissima Engelmann, Antone W. Nisson May 1939

The Rise And Development Of The Megagametophyte In Yucca Angustissima Engelmann, Antone W. Nisson

Theses and Dissertations

The studies involved in this investigation are based upon data and materials secured in the sandy areas of Washington and Iron Counties in southern Utah. The regions in which Yucca angustissima is found have a scant vegetation, are dry, sandy to sandy loam, well-drained, and with an elevation of from 2500 to 5000 feet. Watkins (1937) worked out a very extensive report of the megagametophyte development of Yucca rupicola. He begins with the four megaspore stage, and shows next the disintegration of the three micropylar megaspores. He reported that the chalazal megaspore forms eight free nuclei, by three successive divisions, …

A Taxonomic And Ecological Study Of Acridinae Of Utah (Orthoptera-Locustidae), Herald C. Bennion May 1939

A Taxonomic And Ecological Study Of Acridinae Of Utah (Orthoptera-Locustidae), Herald C. Bennion

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Orthoptera, especially the family Locustidae, is one of the most important and most interesting orders of insects in the state of Utah. It includes a polyphagus group of great economic importance in the state. The topography and climate of Utah varies from forested alpine slopes to hot arid desert wastes, several life zones being represented. This great variation from desert to alpine in Utah presents a rather unique region for taxonomic and ecological studies of the Orthoptera.

The most familiar representatives of the insect order Orthoptera are the long-horned grasshoppers, locusts, crickets, katydids, and cockroaches. Orthoptera are characterized by Comstock …

Trichomoniasis Of The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station Dairy Herd, Rue Jensen May 1939

Trichomoniasis Of The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station Dairy Herd, Rue Jensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Bovine trichomoniasis is a venereal infection that reduces the fecundity of cattle. It is caused by Trichomonas foetus (Riedmuller), a flagellated protozoan which inhabits the genital tract, causing inflammation and partial sterility. Both sexes are susceptible to infection. In females it is usually of short duration and frequently terminates spontaneously following abortion. In males the disease has both acute and chronic stages. During the acute stage the prepucial membranes become inflamed and a muco-purulent discharge develops in which trichomonads are abundant. In the following chronic stage symptoms disappear, but the animal remains a carrier and is a dangerous source of …

A Study Of The Sage Grouse (Centrocercus Urophasianus), With Special Reference To Life History, Habitat Requirements, And Numbers And Distribution, Lynn A. Griner May 1939

A Study Of The Sage Grouse (Centrocercus Urophasianus), With Special Reference To Life History, Habitat Requirements, And Numbers And Distribution, Lynn A. Griner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The sage grouse or sage hen Centrocercus urophasianus (Bonaparte) was formerly the most important upland native game bird of the Western States, but has steadily been declining in numbers over most of its range in recent years. This reduction in numbers has aroused the interest of the conservationists of the nation, who, for the past decade or more, have been proposing that something be done for this game species. In recent years along with this interest of the conservationists, there has been an increasing local interest among the sportsmen of the West, with the result that several groups have become …

A Study Of Hybrids Between Sugar Beets And Mangel Wurzels With Reference To Color Factors And Sugar Content, Boyd Berrey May 1939

A Study Of Hybrids Between Sugar Beets And Mangel Wurzels With Reference To Color Factors And Sugar Content, Boyd Berrey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Preliminary unpublished work at the Salt Lake City Laboratory of the Division of Sugar Plant Investigations, Bureau of Plant Industry, United States Department of Agriculture, indicates that beets showing the Y color factor (9) were larger than sugar-beet types recessive for this color factor (y y). It was suggested to the writer that an investigation be made to determine whether or not yield and sugar content were correlated with color factors in beets. Linkages between the R and Y color factors have been reported by Keller (9), and the results indicate a close linkage between color factors R …

The Rhamnales Of Wisconsin: A Taxonomic Study, Richard W. Pohl Apr 1939

The Rhamnales Of Wisconsin: A Taxonomic Study, Richard W. Pohl

Bachelors’ Theses

The extensive taxonomic literature on the North American Vites was reviewed by L.H. Bailey (3) in 1934. Among the earlier writers, Major John Le Conte published "An Enumeration of the Vines of North America" (32) in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia for 1852-1853. Dr. George Engelmann of St. Louis published a short review of the North American grapes in the American Naturalist for August,1868. He mentioned ten species, giving formal descriptions for none, and commented upon the work of Rafinesque, who had attempted to describe the North American species of Vitis about fifty years previously, …
