Design And Fundamental Understanding Of Minimum Quantity Lubrication (Mql) Assisted Grinding Using Advanced Nanolubricants, Parash Kalita
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abrasive grinding is widely used across manufacturing industry for finishing parts and components requiring smooth superficial textures and precise dimensional tolerances and accuracy. Unlike any other machining operations, the complex thermo-mechanical processes during grinding produce excessive friction-induced energy consumption, heat, and intense contact seizures. Lubrication and cooling from grinding fluids is crucial in minimizing the deleterious effects of friction and heat to maximize the output part quality and process efficiency. The conventional flood grinding approach of an uneconomical application of large quantities of chemically active fluids has been found ineffective to provide sufficient lubrication and produces waste streams and pollutants …

Calibration And Optimization Of A Load Sensor Embedded In A Railroad Bearing Adapter, Lorenzo Saenz Iv
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Freight railcars rely heavily on weigh bridges and stations to determine cargo load. As a consequence, all load measurements are limited to certain locations and specified prices. To this end, this study presents work performed to develop one of the first economical, reliable sensors for keeping track of both dynamic and static loads on a freight railcar. Preliminary testing provided a strain-gauge based sensor that delivered load information in the laboratory environment. Federal Railroad Association (FRA) protocol testing was met and consistent results were obtained from the sensing device. The latter allowed for an optimized sensor that could potentially deliver …

Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Of High-Speed Flows, Oscar Huerta
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
In an effort to understand physical characteristics of high speed flows such as an Impinging Jet (Mach 1.5) and Pulsed Jet (Mach 0.3) both propulsions systems are investigated from phased-locked Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) data that is analyzed using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD). The purpose of POD is to extract the most dominant features found in the flow. The method calculates the eigenvalues and the spatial eigenfunctions that are related to the total kinetic energy with only a few basis functions. Results for an Impinging Jet show about 70% of the energy in the first twenty modes that represent the …

Modeling Tools For Conformal Orthotic Devices, Steven David Riddle
Open Access Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to advance the design of conformal orthotic devices through the development of two modeling tools to address knowledge gaps in the field.
The field of human orthotics has been continually troubled by identifying successful methods of harnessing devices to the body. Past orthotics have utilized a rigid framework with minimal degrees of freedom (DOFs) driven by hard actuators attached to the body at select anchor points. Many devices design the structure and anchor points such that they reduce the degrees of freedom of a targeted joint, limiting the user's mobility and often causing the …
A Study Of Inkjet Printed Line Morphology Using Volatile Ink With Non-Zero Receding Contact Angle For Conductive Trace Fabrication, Chenchao Shou
A Study Of Inkjet Printed Line Morphology Using Volatile Ink With Non-Zero Receding Contact Angle For Conductive Trace Fabrication, Chenchao Shou
Open Access Theses
Inkjet printed lines on a homogeneous solid substrate are studied under the condition that ink evaporation is not negligible and the contact angle exhibits hysteresis with non-zero receding contact angle (NRCA). A new family of line instability is discovered, featured by formation of agglomerations within a line. The agglomeration is explained by a hydrodynamic flow that consistently drives a bead on the substrate towards fresh deposited droplets due to concentration-induced surface tension gradient. Morphologies of lines printed with multiple layers are also explored for the purpose of conductive trace fabrication. A non-uniform morphology is observed across a multi-layer line when …
Analysis Of An Actuated Two Segment Leg Model Of Locomotion, Nikhil Vinayak Rao
Analysis Of An Actuated Two Segment Leg Model Of Locomotion, Nikhil Vinayak Rao
Open Access Theses
Research studies on dynamic models of legged locomotion have generally focused on telescoping-type leg models. Such telescoping spring loaded inverted pendulum (SLIP) models have been able to accurately predict observed center of mass (CoM) trajectories. There have been comparatively fewer studies on dynamics of locomotion
with segmented legs. Some earlier studies on the dynamics due to leg segmentation appear straightforward. For example, a simple model with the only joint moment being due to a passive springy knee has been shown to behave similarly to a telescoping spring-mass model. However, in real-life animal locomotion, there are multiple joint-moments acting at the …

Development Of Mems-Based Corrosion Sensor, Feng Pan
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This research is to develop a MEMS-based corrosion sensor, which is used for monitoring uniform, galvanic corrosion occurring in infrastructures such as buildings, bridges. The corrosion sensor is made up of the composite of micro/nano metal particles with elastomers. The mechanism of corrosion sensor is based on the mass transport of corrosive species through the sensor matrix. When the metal particles in the matrix corrode, the electrical resistivity of the material increases due to increasing particle resistances or reduction of conducting pathways. The corrosion rate can be monitored by detecting the resistivity change in sensing elements. The life span of …

Defect Detection In Railroad Tapered-Roller Bearings Using Vibration Analysis Techniques, Iris L. Alvarado
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Derailments can often lead to great damage, loss of lives, and massive costs associated with the railroad infrastructure. A significant cause of derailments is premature bearing failure, and therefore bearing condition-monitoring systems that can detect developing defects are of great importance. Based on an investigation conducted at the University of Texas-Pan American on the development of a vibration and temperature monitoring system, an algorithm is devised utilizing various vibration analysis techniques. The proposed algorithm determines whether a bearing is defective, the type of defect present, the defective component (i.e. cup, cone, or roller), and the size of the defect. Speed-dependent …

Such devices are not capable of detecting brief transient temperature trending events. The developed algorithms were tested using a fleet of ten railway freight cars instrumented with wireless sensor nodes and operated by an Australian freight transportation company. Eighteen months of continuous monitoring combined with the inspection of …
Control Charts For First Order Autoregressive Analysis With An Exogenous Variable, Becky M. Vela
Control Charts For First Order Autoregressive Analysis With An Exogenous Variable, Becky M. Vela
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
There are many instances in industry, where the necessity of prediction models is extremely important. However, the difficulty of forecasting increases with the number of variables involved, and determining independent variables from dependent variables. Autocorrelation is one of the most common causes for many control charts and other quality measurement tools to falsely signal an error in the process. Time series models, such as autoregressive models, accommodate autocorrelated data to a certain extent. However, using a model that only analyzes historical data alone does not possess the accuracy necessary to be able to forecast data precisely. An addition of an …
