Analysis Of The Forming Characteristics For Cu/Al Bimetal Tubes Produced By The Spinning Process, Kai Jin, Qiwei Yuan, Jie Tao, Joseph P. Domblesky, Xunzhong Guo

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Tube spinning technology represents a process with high forming precision and good flexibility and is increasingly being used in the manufacture of bimetal composite tubular structures. In the present study, a forming analysis of clad tube and base tube in spinning process was conducted through numerical simulations and experiments. There was an equivalent stress transition on the interface since the stress transmission was retarded from clad tube to base tube. The yield strength became a main consideration during a design bimetal composite tube. Meanwhile, the strain distributions in axial direction, tangential direction, and radial direction were also investigated to determine …

Development Of Image Analysis Technique For Quantification Of Recrystalization, Bersabe Morales

Mechanical Engineering Master's Theses

Development of metallic components with desired properties for the new generation of applications requires precise design of grain structure. One of the most effective techniques for manipulating grain structure is by controlling the recrystallization process. Although recrystallization has been studied for many years, its proper and fast quantification is still a challenge. This work develops a new image analysis technique for quantification of recrystallization, as an alternative to intensive and expensive electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis. The image analysis program run on an optical micrograph, detect recrystallized regions and report: fraction recrystallized, average grain size and distribution. To examine the …

Development Of A Counter-Flow Thermal Gradient Microfluidic Device, Shayan Davani Feb 2019

Development Of A Counter-Flow Thermal Gradient Microfluidic Device, Shayan Davani

Doctoral Dissertations

This work presents a novel counter-flow design for thermal stabilization of microfluidic thermal reactors. In these reactors, precise control of temperature of the liquid sample is achieved by moving the liquid sample through the thermal zones established ideally through the conduction in the solid material of the device. The goal here is to establish a linear thermal distribution when there is no flow and to minimize the temperature change at flow condition. External convection as well as internal flowinduced effects influence the prescribed thermal distribution. The counter-flow thermal gradient device developed in this study is capable of both stabilizing the …

Surface And Interface Properties In Thin-Film Solar Cells: Using Soft X-Rays And Electrons To Unravel The Electronic And Chemical Structure, Lothar Weinhardt, Dirk Hauschild, Clemens Heske

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

Thin‐film solar cells have great potential to overtake the currently dominant silicon‐based solar cell technologies in a strongly growing market. Such thin‐film devices consist of a multilayer structure, for which charge‐carrier transport across interfaces plays a crucial role in minimizing the associated recombination losses and achieving high solar conversion efficiencies. Further development can strongly profit from a high‐level characterization that gives a local, electronic, and chemical picture of the interface properties, which allows for an insight‐driven optimization. Herein, the authors' recent progress of applying a “toolbox” of high‐level laboratory‐ and synchrotron‐based electron and soft X‐ray spectroscopies to characterize the chemical …

Linear Stability Analysis Of Subaqueous Bedforms Using Direct Numerical Simulations, ‪Nadim Zgheib, S. Balachandar Feb 2019

Linear Stability Analysis Of Subaqueous Bedforms Using Direct Numerical Simulations, ‪Nadim Zgheib, S. Balachandar

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

We present results on the formation of ripples from linear stability analysis. The analysis is coupled with direct numerical simulations of turbulent open-channel flow over a fixed sinusoidal bed. The presence of the sediment bed is accounted for using the immersed boundary method. The simulations are used to extract the bed shear stress and consequently the sediment transport rate. The approach is different from traditional linear stability analysis in the sense that the phase lag between the bed topology and the sediment flux is obtained from the three-dimensional turbulent simulations. The stability analysis is performed on the Exner equation, whose …

Forcespinning Technique For The Production Of Poly(D,L-Lactic Acid) Submicrometer Fibers: Process–Morphology–Properties Relationship, Victoria Padilla-Gainza, Graciela Morales, Heriberto Rodríguez-Tobías, Karen Lozano

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

This work addresses a systematic study for the process development and optimization of poly(d,l-lactic acid) (PDLLA) submicrometer fibers utilizing the centrifugal spinning technique known as Forcespinning. This study analyzes the effect of polymer concentration (8, 10, and 12 wt %) and angular speed on the fiber morphology, diameter distribution, and fiber yield. The increase in polymer concentration and angular speed favored the formation of continuous and homogeneous submicrometer fibers with an absence of bead formation and higher output. The optimal conditions were established considering the morphological characteristics that exhibit a greater surface area (homogeneous and submicrometer fibers); and they were …

The Influence Of Asphalt Ageing On Induction Healing Effect On Porous Asphalt Concrete, Shi Xu, Xueyan Liu, Amir Tabakovic, Erik Schlangen

Articles

Induction healing is a proven technology which is able to improve the self‐healing capacity of asphalt concrete. Healing is achieved via electromagnetic current produced by passing induction machine, where steel asphalt constituents heat up which in turn soften the bitumen in the asphalt layer, allowing it to flow and close cracks, repairing the damage. This paper reports on the study which investigated the influence of ageing on the healing capacity of Porous Asphalt (PA) concrete. Porous Asphalt concrete mix was prepared first, then subjected to an accelerated (laboratory) ageing process using a ventilated oven. In order to further evaluate the …

Dynamic Response Of A Tunable Mems Accelerometer Based On Repulsive Force, Meysam Daeichin, Mehmet Ozdogan, Shahrzad Towfighian, Ronald Miles

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship

This paper describes a tunable MEMS electrostatic accelerometer that uses repulsive electrode configuration so that the design is not hampered by capacitive pull-in instability. The repulsive force configuration enables the increase of DC bias voltage without suffering from the pull-in failure mode. This flexibility in increasing voltage can be employed as a tuning parameter to widen the working frequency range and to improve the robustness of the accelerometer. A lumped parameter model is developed to simulate the response of the microstructure under a combination of electrostatic and dynamic mechanical loading. The electrostatic force is estimated using a finite element simulation. …

A Hamiltonian Surface-Shaping Approach For Control System Analysis And The Design Of Nonlinear Wave Energy Converters, Shadi Darani, Ossama Abdelkhalik, Rush D. Robinett Iii, David Wilson Feb 2019

A Hamiltonian Surface-Shaping Approach For Control System Analysis And The Design Of Nonlinear Wave Energy Converters, Shadi Darani, Ossama Abdelkhalik, Rush D. Robinett Iii, David Wilson

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Publications

The dynamic model of Wave Energy Converters (WECs) may have nonlinearities due to several reasons such as a nonuniform buoy shape and/or nonlinear power takeoff units. This paper presents the Hamiltonian Surface-Shaping (HSS) approach as a tool for the analysis and design of nonlinear control of WECs. The Hamiltonian represents the stored energy in the system and can be constructed as a function of the WEC’s system states, its position, and velocity. The Hamiltonian surface is defined by the energy storage, while the system trajectories are constrained to this surface and determined by the power flows of the applied non-conservative …

The Influence Of Periodic Shear On Structural Relaxation And Pore Redistribution In Binary Glasses, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Maxim A. Makeev Feb 2019

The Influence Of Periodic Shear On Structural Relaxation And Pore Redistribution In Binary Glasses, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Maxim A. Makeev

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The evolution of porous structure, potential energy and local density in binary glasses under oscillatory shear deformation is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The porous glasses were initially prepared via a rapid thermal quench from the liquid state across the glass transition and allowed to phase separate and solidify at constant volume, thus producing an extended porous network in an amorphous solid. We find that under periodic shear, the potential energy decreases over consecutive cycles due to gradual rearrangement of the glassy material, and the minimum of the potential energy after thousands of shear cycles is lower at larger strain …

Developable Mechanisms On Developable Surfaces, Todd G. Nelson, Trent K. Zimmerman, Robert J. Lang, Spencer P. Magleby, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

The trend toward smaller mechanism footprints and volumes, while maintaining the ability to perform complex tasks, presents the opportunity for exploration of hypercompact mechanical systems integrated with curved surfaces. Developable surfaces are shapes that a flat sheet can take without tearing or stretching, and they represent a wide range of manufactured surfaces. This work introduces “developable mechanisms” as devices that emerge from or conform to developable surfaces. They are made possible by aligning hinge axes with developable surface ruling lines to enable mobility. Because rigid-link motion depends on the relative orientation of hinge axes and not link geometry, links can …

Design And Analysis Of Novel Actuation Mechanism With Controllable Stiffness, Erivelton Gualter Dos Santos, Hanz Richter Feb 2019

Design And Analysis Of Novel Actuation Mechanism With Controllable Stiffness, Erivelton Gualter Dos Santos, Hanz Richter

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Actuators intended for human–machine interaction systems are usually designed to be mechanically compliant. Conventional actuators are not suitable for this purpose due to typically high stiffness. Advanced powered prosthetic and orthotic devices can vary their stiffness during a motion cycle and are power-efficient. This paper proposes a novel actuator design that modulates stiffness by means of a flexible beam. A motorized drive system varies the active length of the cantilever beam, thus achieving stiffness modulation. New large deflection formulation for cantilever beams with rolling contact constraints is used to determine the moment produced by the actuator. To validate the proposed …

Improving Human-Machine Collaboration Through Transparency-Based Feedback – Part I: Human Trust And Workload Model, Kumar Akash, Katelyn Polson, Neera Jain

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we establish a partially observable Markov decision process(POMDP) model framework that captures dynamic changes in human trust and workload for contexts that involve interactions between humans and intelligent decision-aid systems. We use a reconnaissance mission study to elicit a dynamic change in human trust and workload with respect to the system’s reliability and user interface transparency as well as the presence or absence of danger. We use human subject data to estimate transition and observation probabilities of the POMDP model and analyze the trust-workload behavior of humans. Our results indicate that higher transparency is more likely to …

Improving Human-Machine Collaboration Through Transparency-Based Feedback – Part Ii: Control Design And Synthesis, Kumar Akash, Tahira Reid, Neera Jain

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

To attain improved human-machine collaboration, it is necessary for autonomous systems to infer human trust and workload and respond accordingly. In turn, autonomous systems require models that capture both human trust and workload dynamics. In a companion paper, we developed a trust-workload partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) model framework that captured changes in human trust and workload for contexts that involve interaction between a human and an intelligent decision-aid system. In this paper, we defne intuitive reward functions and show that these can be readily transformed for integration with the proposed POMDP model. We synthesize a near-optimal control policy …

Engineering A Bacterial Flagella Forest For Sensing And Actuation – A Progress Report, Xihe Liu, Shulin Ye, Isaac Oti, Lauren Metzinger

SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research

Flagella can be used to make magnetically-controlled microfluidic and nanoscale devices for biomedical applications in both vitro and vivo environments. They are capable of operating with high precision on the cellular and subcellular level. So far, scientists and engineers have successfully used monolithic inorganic materials or photoactive polymers [1] to mimic the helical bacterial flagella whose rotary-propulsion mechanism effectively overcomes the dominant viscous forces that prevail in a low Reynolds-number environment. Here, we focus on bacterial flagella and their rotary motion. The bacterial flagellum is an ideal biomaterial for constructing self-propelling nanoswimmers because it can reversibly change its geometry in …

A wave energy converter and method for extracting energy from water waves maximizes the energy extraction per cycle by estimating an excitation force of heave wave motion on the buoy, computing a control force from the estimated excitation force using a dynamic model, and applying the computed control force to the buoy to extract energy from the heave wave motion. Analysis and numerical simulations demonstrate that the optimal control of a heave wave energy converter is, in general, in the form of a bang-singular-bang control; in which the optimal control at a given time can be either in the singular …

Evaluating Moisture Control Of Variable-Capacity Heat Pumps In Mechanically Ventilated, Low-Load Homes In Climate Zone 2a, Florida Solar Energy Center, Eric Martin

FSEC Energy Research Center®

The well-sealed, highly insulated building enclosures constructed by today's home building industry coupled with efficient lighting and appliances are achieving significantly reduced heating and cooling loads. These low-load homes can present a challenge when selecting appropriate space-conditioning equipment. Conventional, fixed-capacity heating and cooling equipment is often oversized for small homes, causing increased first costs and operating costs. Even if fixed-capacity equipment can be properly specified for peak loads, it remains oversized for use during much of the year. During these part-load cooling hours, oversized equipment meets the target dry-bulb temperatures very quickly, often without sufficient opportunity for moisture control. The …

Power Flow-Conformal Metamirrors For Engineering Wave Reflections., Ana Díaz-Rubio, Junfei Li, Chen Shen, Steven A Cummer, Sergei A Tretyakov

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Recently, the complexity behind manipulations of reflected fields by metasurfaces has been addressed, showing that, even in the simplest scenarios, nonlocal response and excitation of auxiliary evanescent fields are required for perfect field control. In this work, we introduce purely local reflective metasurfaces for arbitrary manipulations of the power distribution of reflected waves without excitation of any auxiliary evanescent field. The method is based on the analysis of the power flow distribution and the adaptation of the reflector shape to the desired distribution of incident and reflected fields. As a result, we find that these power-conformal metamirrors can be easily …

A Framework For Process Inspection Of Metal Additive Manufacturing, Chih-Kun Cheng, Frank W. Liou, Yi-Chien Cheng, Sheng-Chih Shen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we propose a process inspection framework for metal additive manufacturing (AM) processes. AM, also known as 3D printing, is the process of joining materials to make objects on the basis of 3D model data and is envisioned to play a strategic role in maintaining economic and scientific dominance. Different from conventional manufacturing methods, the AM process is a point-by-point and layer-by-layer manufacturing. Thus, there are many opportunities to generate a process error that can cause quality issues in an AM part. A systematic AM process inspection is needed to yield acceptable performance of the part. The critical …
