Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

An inverse solver for the estimation of the temporal-spatial heat transfer coefficients (HTC), without using prior information of the thermal boundary conditions, was used for immersion quenching into palm oil, canola oil, and two commercial petroleum oil quenchants. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) method was used on near-surface temperature-time cooling curve data obtained with the so-called Tensi multithermocouple, and a 12.5 by 45 mm Inconel 600 probe. The fitness function to be minimized by a PSO approach is defined by the deviation of the measured and calculated cooling curves. The PSO algorithm was parallelized and implemented on a graphics accelerator …

Fluorescence Of Cdse/Zns Quantum Dots In Toluene: Effect Of Cyclic Temperature, Ting Chen, Weiling Luan, Shaofu Zhang, Fuqian Yang

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Quantum dots (QDs) are the potential material for the application in optical thermometry, and have been successfully applied to solar cells, LEDs, bio-labeling, structural health monitoring, etc. In this paper, we study the fluorescence properties of CdSe/ZnS QDs in toluene under the action of heating-cooling cycles. The experimental results show that, in a heating-cooling cycle, increasing temperature causes red-shift of the emission peak and the decrease of the PL intensity, and decreasing temperature causes blue-shift of the emission peak and the increase of the PL intensity. The surface structures of the QDs likely are dependent on the cycle numbers, which …

Deep Learning Segmentation Of Coronary Calcified Plaque From Intravascular Optical Coherence Tomography (Ivoct) Images With Application To Finite Element Modeling Of Stent Deployment, Yazan Gharaibeh, Pengfei Dong, David Prabhu, Chaitanya Kolluru, Juhwan Lee, Vlad Zimin, Hozhabr Mozafari, Hiram Bizzera, Linxia Gu, David Wilson

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Because coronary artery calcified plaques can hinder or eliminate stent deployment, interventional cardiologists need a better way to plan interventions, which might include one of the many methods for calcification modification (e.g., atherectomy). We are imaging calcifications with intravascular optical coherence tomography (IVOCT), which is the lone intravascular imaging technique with the ability to image the extent of a calcification, and using results to build vessel-specific finite element models for stent deployment. We applied methods to a large set of image data (>45 lesions and > 2,600 image frames) of calcified plaques, manually segmented by experts into calcified, lumen and …

A Detailed Modeling Study Of Radiative Heat Transfer In A Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine, Chandan Paul, Sebastian Ferreyro Fernandez, Daniel C. Haworth, Somesh Roy, Michael F. Modest

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In recent years, the importance of radiative heat transfer in combustion has been increasingly recognized. Detailed models have become available that accurately represent the complex spectral radiative properties of reacting gas mixtures and soot particles, and new methods have been developed to solve the radiative transfer equation (RTE). At the same time, the trends toward higher operating pressures and higher levels of exhaust-gas recirculation in compression-ignition engines, together with the demand for higher quantitative accuracy from in-cylinder CFD models, has led to renewed interest in radiative transfer in engines. Here an in-depth investigation of radiative heat transfer is performed for …

Influence Of Micro-Structured Superhydrophobic Surfaces On Nucleation And Natural Convection In A Heated Pool, Adam Cowley, Daniel Maynes, Julie Crockett, Brian D. Iverson

Faculty Publications

This word experimentally explores sub-boiling pool nucleation on micro-structured superhydrophobic surfaces. All surfaces tested were submerged in a 20 mm deep pool of water and heated from below to maintain a constant surface temperature, while the side walls of the pool were insulated, and the top was covered. Three thermocouples positioned in the pool obtain the average pool temperature. A heat flux sensor is placed directly beneath the surface to measure the heat flux supplied to the pool. Free convection heat transfer coefficients are obtained for the sub-boiling temperature range of 40 – 90 ºC. Six surface types are studied: …

High-Throughput 3d Reconstruction Of Stochastic Heterogeneous Microstructures In Energy Storage Materials, Yanxiang Zhang, Mufu Yan, Yanhong Wan, Zhenjun Jiao, Yu Chen, Fanglin Chen, Changrong Xia, Meng Ni

Faculty Publications

Stochastic heterogeneous microstructures are widely applied in structural and functional materials, playing a crucial role in determining their performance. X-ray tomography and focused ion beam serial sectioning are frequently used methods to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) microstructures, yet are demanding techniques and are resolution-limited. Here, a high-throughput multi-stage 3D reconstruction method via distance correlation functions is developed using a single representatively large-sized 2D micrograph for stochastic microstructures, and verified by X-ray micro-tomography datasets of isotropic and anisotropic solid oxide fuel cell electrodes. This method provides an economic, easy-to-use and high-throughput approach for reconstructing stochastic heterogeneous microstructures for energy conversion and storage …

Low Temperature Multi Effects Desalination-Mechanical Vapor Compression Powered By Supercritical Organic Rankine Cycle, Eydhah Almatrafi Jan 2019

Low Temperature Multi Effects Desalination-Mechanical Vapor Compression Powered By Supercritical Organic Rankine Cycle, Eydhah Almatrafi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Utilizing low grade heat sources such as geothermal, solar or waste heat has received a high attention in recent years. A lot of research has discussed using Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) as subcritical or supercritical in power generation. However, very few studies extend their research in utilizing ORC in other applications such as desalination. For reverse osmosis (RO) desalination, which is considered a membrane technology, the use of supercritical-ORC in low grade heat sources is more favorable than subcritical-ORC. Thus, studies of utilizing either subcritical-ORC or supercritical-ORC for thermal desalination that use power and heat from Rankine cycle are rare …

Use Of Flexible Sensor To Characterize Biomechanics Of Canine Skin, Austin Downey, Jin Yan, Eric M. Zellner, Karl H. Kraus, Iris V. Rivero, Simon Laflamme

Faculty Publications

Background Suture materials and techniques are frequently evaluated in ex vivo studies by comparing tensile strengths. However, the direct measurement techniques to obtain the tensile forces in canine skin are not available, and, therefore, the conditions suture lines undergo is unknown. A soft elastomeric capacitor is used to monitor deformation in the skin over time by sensing strain. This sensor was applied to a sample of canine skin to evaluate its capacity to sense strain in the sample while loaded in a dynamic material testing machine. The measured strain of the sensor was compared with the strain measured by the …

Understanding the kinematics of a hindlimb model is a fundamental aspect of modeling coordinated locomotion. This work describes the development process of a rat hindlimb model that contains a complete muscular system and incorporates physiological walking data to examine realistic muscle movements during a step cycle. Moment arm profiles for selected muscles are analyzed and presented as the first steps to calculating torque generation at hindlimb joints. A technique for calculating muscle moment arms from muscle attachment points in a three-dimensional (3D) space has been established. This model accounts for the configuration of adjacent joints, a critical aspect of biarticular …

Strength And Plasticity Of Amorphous Silicon Oxycarbide, Kaisheng Ming, Chao Gu, Qing Su, Yongqiang Wang, Arezoo Zare, Don A. Lucca, Michael Nastasi, Jian Wang Jan 2019

Strength And Plasticity Of Amorphous Silicon Oxycarbide, Kaisheng Ming, Chao Gu, Qing Su, Yongqiang Wang, Arezoo Zare, Don A. Lucca, Michael Nastasi, Jian Wang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Amorphous SiOC films were synthesized by magnetron sputtering at room temperature with/without radio frequency (RF) bias and further improved in terms of mechanical properties by ion irradiation. As-deposited SiOC films without RF bias exhibit catastrophic failure at a low stress and strain, which is ascribed to microstructural heterogeneities associated with the formation of voids during deposition, as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy. Ion irradiation unifies microstructure accompanied with eliminating the voids, resulting in a simultaneously increase in strength and plasticity (ultimate strength of 5–7 GPa and the strain to shear instability of over 20%). Homogeneous microstructures are demonstrated to ensure …

Vibration Analysis Of Healthy Skin: Toward A Noninvasive Skin Diagnosis Methodology, Rakshita Panchal, Luke Horton, Peyman Poozesh, Javad Baqersad, Mohammadreza Nasiriavanaki

Mechanical Engineering Publications

Several noninvasive imaging techniques have been developed to monitor the health of skin and enhance the diagnosis of skin diseases. Among them, skin elastography is a popular technique used to measure the elasticity of the skin. A change in the elasticity of the skin can influence its natural frequencies and mode shapes. We propose a technique to use the resonant frequencies and mode shapes of the skin to monitor its health. Our study demonstrates how the resonant frequencies and mode shapes of skin can be obtained using numerical and experimental analysis. In our study, natural frequencies and mode shapes are …

The Effect Of Cryogenic Thermal Cycling On Aging, Rejuvenation, And Mechanical Properties Of Metallic Glasses, Nikolai V. Priezjev Jan 2019

The Effect Of Cryogenic Thermal Cycling On Aging, Rejuvenation, And Mechanical Properties Of Metallic Glasses, Nikolai V. Priezjev

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The structural relaxation, potential energy states, and mechanical properties of a model glass subjected to thermal cycling are investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. We study a non-additive binary mixture which is annealed with different cooling rates from the liquid phase to a low temperature well below the glass transition. The thermal treatment is applied by repeatedly heating and cooling the system at constant pressure, thus temporarily inducing internal stresses upon thermal expansion. We find that poorly annealed glasses are relocated to progressively lower levels of potential energy over consecutive cycles, whereas well annealed glasses can be rejuvenated at sufficiently large …

Ignition And Extinction Behavior Of Fuels In A Microcombustor, Pawan Sharma Jan 2019

Ignition And Extinction Behavior Of Fuels In A Microcombustor, Pawan Sharma

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Conventional fuel testing device-CFR engine requires large quantities of fuels, which makes it unsuitable for research of small samples of fuels. This current study seeks to address this limitation by using an externally heated microcombustor as an alternative fuel testing device. Mainly three combustion behaviors have been observed inside a microcombustor: strong flames at higher flow rates, Flames with Repetitive Extinction and Ignition (FREI) at intermediate flow rates, and weak flames at marginal flow rates. In previous studies, weak combustion behavior has been proven suitable to study fuel properties from small samples of fuels. Microcombustor experiments typically rely on flame …

Shape memory alloys (SMAs), such as Nitinol (i.e., NiTi), are of great importance in biomedical and engineering applications due to their unique superelasticity and shape memory properties. In recent years, additive manufacturing (AM) processes have been used to produce complex NiTi components, which provide the ability to tailor microstructure and thus the critical properties of the alloys, such as the superelastic behavior and transformation temperatures (TTs), by selection of processing parameters. In biomedical applications, superelasticity in implants play a critical role since it gives the implants bone-like behavior. In this study, a methodology of improving superelasticity in Ni-rich NiTi components …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Centrifugally Spun Poly(Acrylic Acid) Nanofibers, David De La Garza, Francisco De Santiago, Luis Materon, Mircea Chipara, Mataz Alcoutlabi

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The production of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) nanofibers by the centrifugal spinning of PAA solutions in water is reported. The effect of the spinneret rotational speed and concentration of PAA solutions on the diameter of nanofibers and on their quality (assessed by the absence of beads) is discussed. The main physical properties of PAA such as glass-transition temperature (Tg) are studied in detail and compared to the feature of the as-received homopolymer. It is shown that the glass-transition temperature of the bulk PAA and PAA nanofibers (as measured by differential scanning calorimetry) depends on the heating rate according …

A Sine-Summation Algorithm For The Prediction Of Ship Deck Motion, Christian R. Bolander, Douglas F. Hunsaker Jan 2019

A Sine-Summation Algorithm For The Prediction Of Ship Deck Motion, Christian R. Bolander, Douglas F. Hunsaker

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations

Landing a fixed-wing aircraft on a moving aircraft carrier is a risky and inefficient process. Having an accurate prediction of ship deck motion decreases the risk posed to both the pilot and the aircraft and increases the efficiency of landing maneuvers. The present work proposes the use of a sine-summation algorithm to predict future ship motion. The algorithm decomposes recorded ship acceleration data into its characteristic harmonic parameters using a fast Fourier transform. The harmonic parameters are then used in a summation of sine waves to create a fit for the acceleration data, which is projected into future time intervals …

Structural Transformations During Periodic Deformation Of Low-Porosity Amorphous Materials, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Maxim A. Makeev Jan 2019

Structural Transformations During Periodic Deformation Of Low-Porosity Amorphous Materials, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Maxim A. Makeev

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Atomistic simulations are employed to study structural evolution of pore ensembles in binary glasses under periodic shear deformation with varied amplitude. The consideration is given to porous systems in the limit of low porosity. The initial ensembles of pores are comprised of multiple pores with small sizes, which are approximately normally distributed. As periodic loading proceeds, the ensembles evolve into configurations with a few large-scale pores and significantly reduced number of small pores. These structural changes are reflected in the skewed shapes of the pore-size distribution functions and the appearance of a distinct peak at large length scales after hundreds …
