Cassava pulp, a low cost solid byproduct of cassava starch industry, has been proposed as a high potential ethanolic fermentation substrate due to its high residual starch level, low ash content and small particle size of the lignocellulosic fibers. As the economic feasibility depends on complete degradation of the polysaccharides to fermentable glucose, the comparative hydrolytic potential of cassava pulp by six commercial enzymes were studied. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) have gained a great deal of interest, due to their potential for high efficiency power generation and ability to utilize hydrogen fuel, as well as various hydrocarbon-based fuels. A recent trend in SOFC development has been towards lower operating temperatures (500-700°C), which can substantially reduce the cost and complexity of the system. The purpose of this research was to examine the primary in-service failure mechanism of an air plasma sprayed thermal barrier coating commonly used in combustor applications, and to use that failure mechanism as a basis in developing a life prediction strategy. The research consisted of an experimental phase, in which the failure mechanism was identified and key features of the coating system measured, and a modeling phase, in which the findings of the experimental phase were used to build a system specific finite element model of the coating in order to extract quantitative data relevant to coating life.

A Freeze-form Extrusion Fabrication (FEF) process capable of making three-dimensional (3D) parts and structures with graded composite materials is presented in this paper. The process development includes the design and manufacture of a gantry machine with a triple-extruder mechanism and the associated electronics hardware and computer software for fabricating functionally graded parts from multiple aqueous pastes. A rheological behavior study with Al2O3 paste is performed to identify an efficient binder for transforming the paste into a pseudoplastic with a high yield stress. Particle size, binder content and the post-processing schedule are important parameters that affect the microstructure, and, hence, the mechanical properties of parts produced using the indirect selective laser sintering process. 13-93 bioactive glass, with mean particle sizes ranging from 10 μm to 44 μm, is mixed with different amounts of stearic acid binder to fabricate green scaffolds. Through the design of the post-processing schedule, the time required for postprocessing the green scaffolds is reduced from the initial 80 hrs to 12 hrs. Two Ni-base solid-solution-strengthened superalloys: INCONEL 617 and HAYNES 230 were studied to check sustained loading crack growth (SLCG) behavior at elevated temperatures appropriate for Next Generation Nuclear Plant (NGNP) applictaions with constant stress intensity factor (K max = 27.75 MPa[checkmark]m) in air. The results indicate a time-dependent rate controlling process which can be characterized by a linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) parameter - stress intensity factor (K). At elevated temperatures, the crack growth mechanism was best described using a damage zone concept. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the interfragmentary compression force across a simulated scaphoid fracture by two commonly used compression screw systems; the Acutrak 2 Standard and the 3.0 mm Synthes headless compression screw.

METHODS: Sixteen (8 pairs; 6 female, 2 male) cadaver scaphoids were randomly assigned to receive either the Acutrak 2 or Synthes screw with the contralateral scaphoid designated to receive the opposite. Guide wires were inserted under fluoroscopic control. To the best of our knowledge, the mechanical properties of PECVD boron carbide (BC) grown using ortho-carborane as a source molecule have never been investigated before. Therefore, this thesis is an attempt to apply the bulge test and the nanoindentation technique for the mechanical characterization of PECVD BC thin films. A 1‐axis carousel tracker equipped with four 3‐sun low‐concentration mirror modules has now been under test outdoors at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas (UNLV) for three years. There are three unique features associated with this unit. First, simple linear mirrors are used to reduce the amount of expensive single crystal silicon in order to potentially lower the module cost while potentially maintaining cell efficiencies over 20% and high module efficiency. The petroleum fuels (PF) subsidy has long burdens the government spending, and discourages less expensive energy usage such as natural gas (NG). Exporting NG and importing the more expensive PF products cause financial losses to Indonesia. The lack of NG infrastructure is the main hurdle in maximizing domestic NG usage and so does the perception of its high investment costs burdening government spending and pushing the NG transportation cost up. Microbial xylanases or xylanolytic enzyme have received considerable attention over the last years owing to a multitude of possible applications. The focus of this research is to analyze potential environmental impact in the supply chain of palm oil biodiesel industries. Simple Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is applied to analyze impacts, produced by the three main units in the supply chain of Palm-Oil-based Biodiesel, which are Palm Plantation, CPO mill, and Biodiesel Plant. Characterization of Surface Active Shell Charcoal Nyamplung Seeds (Calophyllum inophyllum Linn). Chemical and physical activation of nyamplung shell with 0%, 5%, and 10% H3PO4 for 60 and 120 minutes has been carried out to prepare activated charcoal. The purpose of this experiment was to look into the characteristic of nyamplung shell activated charcoal surface. Nyamplung shell was carbonized into charcoal, then activated by immersion in H3PO4 solution using 0%, 5% and 10%, for 24 hours, and heated in retort at two temperatures (700 and 800 oC) and two duration (60 and 120 minutes).
