Structural Self-Shadowing And Its Effects On The Thermal-Structural Behavior Of Orbiting Trusses, Jack Mahaney
Structural Self-Shadowing And Its Effects On The Thermal-Structural Behavior Of Orbiting Trusses, Jack Mahaney
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The determination of structural shadowing is described. The computation of environmental heat loads for slender structural members in earth orbit is described, and two methods for finite element thermal analysis are described . The effects of self-shadowing on the thermal structural behavior of single truss members and two different trusses are presented. In each case the shadowing produces a noticeable effect on the temperature distributions on truss members, and on the deformations of the trusses.

Desirable Combinations Of Electrode And Flux For Submerged Arc Welding Of Low Carbon Steel, James A. Husmann
Graduate Research Papers
The major purpose of this study was to provide information about desirable combinations of welding electrode and appropriate fluxes for submerged arc welding of low carbon steel. Other purposes were to:
1. Test a variety of combinations of available submerged arc welding electrodes and fluxes in welding low carbon steel.
a. Prepare specimens for tensile tests.
b. Conduct tensile tests.
c. Calculate tensile strength, yield point, break point, percent of elongation, and percent reduction of area.
2. Determine the most desirable combinations of electrode and flux for companies presently using or planning to use submerged arc welding for low carbon …
Measurement Of Neck Development In Tensile Testing Using Projection Moire, Raghavan Srinivasan, C. S. Hartley, C. Raju, J. Clave
Measurement Of Neck Development In Tensile Testing Using Projection Moire, Raghavan Srinivasan, C. S. Hartley, C. Raju, J. Clave
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
The projection moire technique affords an accurate method of measuring the geometry of the necked region in a tensile specimen. Corrections to the measured stress, necessary to account for the triaxiality introduced by the neck, require values for the radius of curvature of the specimen at the minimum section. The spacing of fringes resulting from the interference between a grating projected on the specimen surface and a master grating not only provide information which permits calculation of the radius but also demonstrates any changes in symmetry resulting from plastic deformation. Results obtained by testing specimens of copper and mild steel …

Wood Finishing For Tree Samples Of Five Honduran Species, Amilcar A. Cruz
Wood Finishing For Tree Samples Of Five Honduran Species, Amilcar A. Cruz
Graduate Research Papers
This research report will study the application of four wood finishing techniques to samples of each of five species of Honduran hardwood.
These four wood finishing methods are: The varnish-method, the lacquer method, the antiquing method and the oil-rub method. The researcher will attempt to determine which is the best method for each of the five species.
Curing And Flow Of Thermosetting Resins For Composite Materials Pultrusion, Howard L. Price Jr.
Curing And Flow Of Thermosetting Resins For Composite Materials Pultrusion, Howard L. Price Jr.
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Fibrous composite materials for mechanical and structural applications often are expensive due to high labor costs. One economical way of making composites is pultrusion, a manufacturing process in which resin-impregnated fibers are pulled at a constant speed through a heated die which shapes the resin-fiber mass and cures the resin. Most of the work which has been done on the process has been of an empirical nature, with limited understanding of the process principles. Most of the experience with pultrusion has been gained with polyester resins and glass fibers. Very little experience has been gained with higher performance, more costly …
Analysis Of Moisture Absorption And Diffusion In Fiber Reinforced Polymeric Resin-Matrix Composite Materials, Stephen Stern Tompkins
Analysis Of Moisture Absorption And Diffusion In Fiber Reinforced Polymeric Resin-Matrix Composite Materials, Stephen Stern Tompkins
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The diffusion of moisture through fiber reinforced polymeric-matrix composite materials has been studied analytically. The diffusion in the orthotropic, nonhomogeneous material was modeled, in detail, with a two-dimensional transient diffusion analysis. An effective diffusivity for the composite was determined in terms of the fiber volume fraction and the resin diffusivity. This effective diffusivity is in better agreement with recent data than those previously determined using less complex models.
The influence of both material and environmental parameters on the moisture content of the composite was determined analytically. Predicted moisture contents were compared over a wide range of values for emittance, solar …

A Method For Improving The Accuracy In Phase Change Heat Transfer Data Through Increased Precision In Thermophysical Property Determinations, John Philip Drummond
A Method For Improving The Accuracy In Phase Change Heat Transfer Data Through Increased Precision In Thermophysical Property Determinations, John Philip Drummond
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Wind tunnel model materials typically have thermophysical properties that vary with both position and temperature. A numerical study using a finite difference representation of the heat conduction equation has been performed on several of these model materials to determine their thermal response under a specified heat loading. This study has confirmed the feasibility of using an effective thermophysical property to account for the existence of variable thermal properties when a model undergoes aero dynamic heating. The effective property, when used in the reduction of phase-change heat transfer data, forced agreement of the actual transient behavior of a model with the …

Direct Design Of A Portal Frame, Angel Fajardo Ugaz
Dissertations and Theses
This investigation was undertaken to develop plastic design aids to be used in the direct design of optimum frames. It uses the concept of minimum weight of plastically designed steel frames, and the concept of linear programming to obtain general solutions. Among the special characteristics of this study are: A. The integration of both gravity and combined loading conditions into one linear programming problem. B. The application of the revised simplex method to the dual of a parametric original problem. C. The application of A and B above in the development of design aids for the optimum design of symmetrical …
The Burnett Control Gate For Irrigation Channels, B Swan
The Burnett Control Gate For Irrigation Channels, B Swan
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THIS type of check-gate for use in irrigation ditches, was evolved on the Kimberley Research Station and has definite advantages over wooden or concrete structures in that it is termite-proof and can be removed and replaced in a few minutes to permit of the channel being cleaned out by straight runs with modern machinery.
