1999 Izmit earthquake has shown that a vast number of buildings were built over liquefiable silty soils in Adapazari, Turkey. Most of these buildings have been classified as “moderately” damaged, and mitigation of the liquefaction risk has been made mandatory before these structures are reoccupied. A literature review revealed that low pressure permeation grouting has been used successfully for this purpose. A dike section reinforced with geogrid against soil liquefaction was hit by a damaging earthquake in 2000. As the site condition of this dike section was anticipated to be liquefied by an earthquake, so it was decided to take remedial measures against possible damage. However, since the hinterland of this newly constructed dike section was a rural area, primary objective of the treatment design was set to avoid the stretching effect caused by the liquefaction. The proposed Great River Bridge is a 1400-foot long cable-stay structure that will be constructed over the Mississippi River between Desha County, Arkansas and Bolivar County, Mississippi. Including the bridge approach structures and approach embankments, the total structure length is approximately 23,500 feet. Seismic issues have controlled most of the structural design. Design ground motions for three typical subsurface profiles were developed and resulted in near-surface peak accelerations between 0.23 and 0.26g. Level ground liquefaction analyses indicated widespread liquefaction in an abandoned channel of the river and sporadic liquefaction elsewhere. A new technique using dimensional analysis (D.A.) is presented here to draw profile of phreatic line through an earthen dam. A universal equation is formulated using D.A. to get numerous points on a steady-state phreatic surface. The prediction of phreatic line using D.A. is then compared with those of conventional methods by Kozeny, A. Casagrande, Stello and also with centrifuge model test results and large scale prototype field results to evaluate applicability of this equation. Based on the theory of wave and the Snell theorem, propagation characteristics of seismic wave, three kinds of elastic body waves, is studied when they pass through soil/elastic solid medium including elastic thin plan intercalation in half-space. The analytic solution of the amplitude rate is the rate of the amplitude of the wave behind the intercalation to that of the incident wave. Compared with the field data, the analytic results are beneficial, affected by soft clay stratum, at the Nankai District of Tianjin Municipality caused by the 1976 Tangshan earthquake (had a magnitude of 7.8). Over the past decade, liquefaction assessments have been performed for many existing and planned critical facilities at the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site (SRS). The assessments incorporated site-specific Cyclic Resistance Ratio (CRR) and Ks with the use of the cone penetration test (CPT). The SRS-specific CRR and Ks were developed from laboratory testing of carefully collected samples. Test results show SRS soils have increased liquefaction resistance of two to three times when compared to standard literature for Holocene-age deposits. More than 100 timber houses settled and tilted due to liquefaction at a housing development during the 2000 Tottoriken-seibu earthquake in Japan. Among the damaged houses, 47 houses tilted more than 15/1000. Heavily tilted houses were necessary to restore to become horizontal after the earthquake, though several houses, that tilted slightly, were not necessary to restore. The authors studied the boundary of the angle of the restored and non-restored houses. According to the study by the authors, the critical angle of tilting to restore houses was about 10/1000. The effects of material nonlinearity of soil on dynamic behavior of a single pile and pile groups are investigated. An advanced plasticity based soil model, HiSS, is incorporated in the finite element formulation. To simulate radiation effects, proper boundary conditions are used. The model and algorithm are verified with analytical results that are available for elastic and elasto-plastic soil models. Bridge abutments may experience significant displacements during earthquakes. A two-dimensional model has been developed considering sliding and overturning displacement and 1) strain dependent soil stiffness and soil damping and 2) horizontal and vertical time dependent seismic load. The displacements are computed from the static equilibrium position where the seismic backfill force increments are considered for determining the active earth force acting behind the abutment wall. This means that the permanent displacement increment occurred if the acceleration acts towards the backfill and the abutment wall moves away from the backfill. The propagation of plane waves in fibre-reinforced medium is discussed. The expressions of phase velocity of quasi-P (qP) and quasi-SV (qSV) waves propagating in plane symmetry are obtained in terms of propagation vector. We have established a relation from which displacement vector can be obtained in terms of propagation vector. The expressions for the reflection coefficients of qP and qSV waves are obtained. Numerical results of reflection coefficients are obtained and presented graphically. The partition of energy between qP and qSV waves reflected on a free boundary due to incident qP and qSV waves are also obtained and presented graphically.

On June 11, 2002, a 150-foot wide and 60-foot deep sinkhole collapsed in Pine Hills, near Orlando, Florida. The Pine Hills Sinkhole was the largest sinkhole to occur in Central Florida in the past 20 years. The collapse swallowed approximately 10,000 cubic yards of earth, sidewalks, light fixtures, a sanitary sewer and several large oak trees in less than 2 hours. The rim of the sinkhole came within a few feet of the shallow foundations of 2 three-story apartment buildings. River dykes and road embankments are frequently damaged during earthquakes. The liquefaction of foundation, the behavior of which is not yet well realized, is considered to be the main cause of the damage. Based on the results of past studies, the foundation of an embankment was divided into three zones to examine the failure modes. Ground vibrations are generated either by natural phenomena or by human activities. Among the natural phenomena, earthquake is the principal source of ground vibrations of most interest. Ground vibrations generated by human activities are called manmade vibrations and these vary greatly in intensity depending on the particular source of vibration. The seismic waves associated with man-made vibrations propagate in the ground and inevitably interact with structures that are above-ground or underground. To get informations about the deformation and bearing behaviour of a soil improvement by the use of Lime-Cement Columns under a railway line on soft soil large scale field tests were performed. The tests were observed by various static and dynamic measurement devices and over a period of 3 months 1200 train crossings were recorded. During the test stage the train speed varies from 30 km/h to 90 km/h to analyse the influence of the train speed on the dynamic behaviour and the stabilizing effect of the soil improvement. Vibrations generated by driven pile installation often affect adjacent and surrounding buildings in tightly spaced urban environments. These vibrations can lead to complaints from neighboring residents and businesses and/or cause structural damage to adjacent structures, especially older and historic buildings. Heavy rains in late December 2001 and January 2002 caused approximately 100 meters of roadway to settle approximately 0.5 meters within a week along Highway 1 on the Sonoma County Coast (Post Mile 30.3). This area has a complex landslide history involving two active landslides. These landslides coalesce on a narrow section of Highway 1 approximately 130 meters above the Pacific Ocean. A tieback wall, sheet piles and a lightweight fill embankment had previously been constructed at this location to try to stabilize and maintain the roadway. An instrumentation program was undertaken to monitor the movements of a multi-story underground parking-structure exhibiting signs of large deformation and severe structural distress including the failure of a column. The structure is a four-story reinforced concrete building with a rectangular footprint measuring 52.42 m by 71.32 m. The building’s structural system consists of reinforced concrete waffle slabs supported by rectangular reinforced-concrete columns. The instrumentation plan included the installation of eight vibrating-wire displacement transducers to monitor displacements, and twenty-four electrolytic tiltmeters to monitor inclinations. Two case histories are presented where jurisdictional authorities expressed a concern regarding the impact of blast and construction traffic induced vibrations on the stability of the burrows of endangered ground dwelling species. The first case history involved the use of explosives proposed to be used for a seismic survey in the vicinity of desert tortoise burrows. The concern was that the use of explosives in the vicinity of a tortoise burrow could cause the collapse of an occupied burrow potentially trapping the tortoise within the burrow. A new building recently constructed in the centre of the city of Salerno, Italy, comprises a two level underground park with a maximum depth of 8 m below the ground surface and around 5 m below the ground water table. MSE walls are widely used in site development, primarily due to their low cost when compared with conventional retaining structures; however, the costs to repair or reconstruct a poorly performing wall likely outweigh these initial savings. This paper includes a summary of three MSE walls that have experienced either a complete failure (collapse) or have undergone significant movement, adversely affecting wall performance. In each case history, the likely cause of failure and the solution for rehabilitation of the structures are presented, along with the approximate cost of repair.
