Multi-Material Proportional Topology Optimization Using Adaptive Quadtree Sbfe Framework, Natchanon Chantab
Multi-Material Proportional Topology Optimization Using Adaptive Quadtree Sbfe Framework, Natchanon Chantab
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This thesis presents a novel approach to multi-material Proportional Topology Optimization (PTO) by integrating an automatic image-based quadtree element (2D) structure with the Scaled Boundary Finite Element framework (SBFE). Our method minimizes compliance or maximizes mechanical stiffness of multi-material structures while adhering to volume fraction constraints for each material. Design variables, proportionally weighted from 0 to 1, correspond to compliance values in optimization loops without sensitivity values. Additionally, a material interpolation scheme spatially separates material behaviors. An adaptive quadtree algorithm captures local area element details, reducing memory usage, solution times, and improving numerical accuracy. Implemented in finite element analysis using …
Development Of A Computer Vision System To Monitor Container Closures And Cleanliness Of Tools Related To Volatile Substances In Construction Projects, Tun Lin Naing
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Construction chemicals have gained an essential role across various aspects of the construction process in modern construction. While construction chemicals provide advantages to construction activities, if there are no control measures, they can transform into hazardous substances that pose occupational health risks and environmental impacts, which can also affect a company's ESG performance. Therefore, it is important to implement prevention and control measures for chemical materials during their utilization on construction sites to prevent the transformation of construction chemicals into hazardous substances. Currently, traditional methods of checking chemical containers and tools on construction sites are time-consuming, prone to errors, and …
Stability Analysis Of Cellular Steel Plane Frames, Voraphol Horsangchai
Stability Analysis Of Cellular Steel Plane Frames, Voraphol Horsangchai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This research presents a comprehensive investigation of the global stability of cellular steel columns, beam-columns, and frames. For the cellular steel columns, the existing equation for predicting the elastic buckling load is improved to account for the local bending deformation of the web posts. Subsequently, the column strength equation is analytically developed from the energy approach. The second-order inelastic analysis is performed using 3D finite element (FE) models and validated against the experimental results. The validated FE models are then employed to assess the developed column strength curve and examine the influence of initial imperfections on the critical strength of …
Bi-Directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization For 3d-Printed Prefabricated Concrete Panels, Pochara Amornsittipipat
Bi-Directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization For 3d-Printed Prefabricated Concrete Panels, Pochara Amornsittipipat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This thesis seeks to develop an optimal design methodology for 3D-printed prefabricated concrete panels. Although 3D-printed precast panels are advantageous for producing flexible forms, reducing workforce demand, and minimizing environmental impacts, the product must not be too heavy to transport and install. Therefore, the consideration of weight emphasizes the need for structural optimization. This research presents truss-like structural modeling based on the properties of 3D-printed concrete, suggests an optimal design methodology using the Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (BESO) algorithm to achieve minimum weight, conducts parametric studies to understand the relationship between significant parameters and the optimal weight achieved, and demonstrates …
Image-Base Adaptive Proportional Topology Optimization Of Infill Structure Using Polygon Sbfe Approach, Sompong Rungsawang
Image-Base Adaptive Proportional Topology Optimization Of Infill Structure Using Polygon Sbfe Approach, Sompong Rungsawang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The use of infill structures is widespread in additive manufacturing applications, offering porous domains that are well-suited for withstanding various physical loadings. This thesis introduces a novel approach, namely Proportional Topology Optimization (PTO), leveraging an automatic image-based quadtree Scaled Boundary Finite Element (SBFE) framework. The SBFE, where sub-domains are treated as polygonal elements in 2D, is employed to address the hanging node issue. The methodology is extended to design infill structures by minimizing compliance concerning force variations, subject to local volume fraction constraints rather than a global volume constraint for each element in the design domain. Material density for each …

Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (Qmra) For Urban Stormwater Reuse After Treatment Through A Bioretention System, Isaac Oluk
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
Bioretention, also referred to as a stormwater biofilter, is an extensively used low-impact development technology for both stormwater management and water quality gains. However, little attention has been paid to the acceptability and uncertainty of human health risks associated with the treatment performance of bioretention filter media, and non-potable water reuse scenarios to guide decision-making and system design. This study uses bioretention mechanistic modeling paired with quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) under uncertainty to evaluate human health risks from two reference pathogens – Campylobacter jejuni and Cryptosporidium. Consumption of irrigated green salad, consumption of raw green salad washed with effluent, …

Digital Twins For Ancillary Transportation Asset Data Management, Ashtarout Ammar
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
Transportation Asset Management (TAM) is a data-driven decision-making process to maintain and extend the serviceability of transportation assets throughout their lifecycle. TAM is an extensive data process requiring accurate, high-quality information for better decision-making. A significant challenge that state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) face is allocating limited funds to optimize their assets’ performance. The criticality of this challenge increases when state DOTs need to manage a wide variety of assets distributed along with a vast network; thus, they prioritize the management of high-value assets and visible ones such as bridges, and they pay less attention to ancillary assets even though …

A Generalized Accelerated Failure Time Model To Predict Restoration Time From Power Outages, Tasnuba Binte Jamal
A Generalized Accelerated Failure Time Model To Predict Restoration Time From Power Outages, Tasnuba Binte Jamal
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
Major disasters such as wildfire, tornado, hurricane, tropical storm, flooding cause disruptions in infrastructure systems such as power outage, disruption to water supply system, wastewater management, telecommunication failures, and transportation facilities. Disruptions in electricity infrastructures have negative impacts on sectors throughout a region, including education, medical services, financial, and recreation sectors. In this study, we introduce a novel approach to investigate the factors which can be associated with longer restoration time of power service after a hurricane. Considering restoration time as the dependent variable and utilizing a comprehensive set of county-level data, we have estimated a Generalized Accelerated Failure Time …

Quantifying Geogrid Reinforcement Mechanism In Roadway Performance Using Cyclic Plate Load (Cpl) Test, G.S. Ellithy, A. Crippa
Publications
For decades, geogrids have been used successfully to improve performance in both paved and unpaved roadway construction. Even though the current state of practice differentiates between the design methodology incorporating geogrids in paved and unpaved roadways, the true improvement contribution of geogrids is to the base layer, or to the layer that is placed directly on top of it. It has been established that the three reinforcement mechanisms by which geogrids enhance roadway performance are: lateral restraint, bearing capacity increase and membrane tension support. In order to quantify these mechanisms and their contribution to the roadway performance improvement, two Cyclic …

Transportation systems will be likely transformed by the emergence of automated vehicles (AVs) promising for safe, convenient, and efficient mobility, especially if used in shared systems (shared AV or SAV). However, the potential tendency is observed towards owning AV as a private asset rather than using SAV. This calls for a research on investigating individuals’ attitude towards AV in comparison with SAV to recognize the barriers to the public’s tendency towards SAV. To do so, the present study proposes a modeling framework based on the theories in behavioral psychology to explain individuals’ preference for owning AV over using SAV, built …

When building Soil Geosynthetic Composite (SGC) walls, fill compaction is normally carried out by operating a compactor in a general direction parallel to the wall face. In other words, a moving point or area load is often used to apply a compaction load on a newly installed soil lift. Pham (2009) and Wu and Pham (2010) demonstrated that the compaction-induced stress (CIS) caused by multiple passes of a compactor moving toward or away from a section can be calculated by taking into account the compaction load applied directly above the section under consideration using a simplified stress path proposed by …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Advanced fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are being used as mainstream structural materials to build complex infrastructure systems. Such application of FRP composites can be attributed to their high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios, corrosion resistance, higher energy absorption, durability, and competitive life-cycle costs. FRP composites are increasingly being considered as suitable alternative structural materials to traditional construction materials such as timber, concrete, and steel.
In this work, detailed experimental investigation has been carried out on different types of glass FRP composite pedestrian bridges with FRP and/or timber deck. Four full-scale FRP pedestrian bridges, including 70`×8.5’ and 70’×10’ single-span bridges, a 16’×8’ …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Many large cities face significant challenges in providing safe, economical, equitable, reliable, and efficient mobility services. Moreover, mobility service options have been changing unprecedentedly due to the advent of emerging mobility services. Understanding the impacts of emerging mobility services (e.g., for-hire vehicles, bike sharing) on other travel modes (e.g., transit, non-motorized modes, personal car) and evolving travel behavior is critical to promote sustainable modes for urban residents and reduce auto-dependency. New York City (NYC) has been conducting annual mobility survey since 2017 to understand the emerging travel behavior and mode choice characteristics. This dataset presents a unique opportunity for conducting …
Using Modflow To Assess Groundwater Storage Enhancement Via A Floodplain Infiltration Basin, Lindsay Henning
Using Modflow To Assess Groundwater Storage Enhancement Via A Floodplain Infiltration Basin, Lindsay Henning
All Master's Theses
Delaying groundwater discharge into rivers until it is critically needed during baseflow conditions provides promise for lowering elevated stream temperatures and improving habitat for aquatic species. Increasing groundwater storage may accomplish this in locations where excess spring runoff can be captured and allowed to infiltrate into the subsurface for later beneficial use, a process known as Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR). Here, MAR via an infiltration basin is considered at a site along the Teanaway River in central Washington State. The effects of simulated ephemeral ponds of sizes varying from 554 m3 to 2430 m3 (0.449 acre-feet to 1.97 …
Time-Specific Safety Performance Functions For Different Advanced Traffic Management Strategies, Jingwan Fu
Time-Specific Safety Performance Functions For Different Advanced Traffic Management Strategies, Jingwan Fu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Time-specific Safety Performance Functions (SPFs) were proposed to achieve accurate and dynamic crash frequency predictions and bridge the gap between annual crash frequency prediction and real-time crash likelihood prediction. This research proposed time-specific SPFs considering the temporal variation in crashes and traffic characteristics. Firstly, the developed time-specific SPFs that include different ATM strategies (i.e., HOV, merge, diverge and reversible lanes segments) were investigated in this study. The results indicate that the traffic turbulence during specific hours would relate to crash occurrence. Further, the variables that represent the speed and occupancy differences between the HOV lanes/reversible lanes and general-purpose lanes were …
Promoting Enhanced Decision-Making And Proactive Management For Modularization In The Construction Industry Using Risk-Based Approach, Analytical Hierarchy Process, And Graph Theory, Mohamad Abdul Nabi
Doctoral Dissertations
"Modularization is an approach that can potentially mitigate many of the current construction industry’s challenges. Despite the documented advantages of modularization, the industry is still not able to capitalize on its full potential and benefits. The latter is due to the outdated decision-making models that may not reflect the multiple factors involved in modular construction, the unique source of risks associated with modular construction methods, need for continuous improvement, and complex contractual requirements and disputes. As such, the goal is to promote the use of modularization in the construction industry by enhancing decision-making and proactive risk management. The associated objectives …

Performance Evaluation Of Using Waste Glass Powder And Fly Ash In Alkali-Activated Slag Binder And Mortar Samples As Partial Precursors, Sunday A. Eniola
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The increasing environmental burden at landfills due to the disposal of waste glass has motivated the scientific community to find an alternative for its utilization. One of these promising routes is to use glass powder (GP) as precursor and waste glass sands as sand replacement in alkali-activated slag (AAS) mortar to reduce the setting time, shrinkage, and efflorescence characteristics for the field applications by comparing with class F fly ash (FFA). This study first experimentally investigates the setting behavior, shrinkage behavior and compressive strength, and efflorescence characteristics of AAS binder prepared with partially replaced glass powder and fly ash. The …

Numerous studies have concentrated on developing user-centered designs for hazard zone maps but rarely for hazard-oriented geomorphological maps, named as Geomorphological Hazard Thematic Maps (GHTMs) in this study, which provide more detailed information about natural hazards. This study developed a user-centered mapping design for GHTMs for nonexperts in geomorphology. We invited civil engineers and high school educators to evaluate a sample GHTM's design in group and focus group panel interviews. The civil engineers preferred maps with more geomorphological features, whereas the educators preferred simple designs. Both groups indicated that the inclusion of essential facilities and road networks is essential. The …

Powering Electric Vehicles: Are We Ready?, Christian Yoder
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This project will investigate typical power grids and the impacts that electric vehicles have on them. Electric vehicles are rapidly growing in popularity and much of the world is promising to make the switch from combustion engines to EVs. Electric vehicles demand a large amount of electricity. With fast charging becoming available, it is worth asking if the current electrical infrastructure can handle the increase in demand. After talking to a source at FirstEnergy, it seems large electric companies are well aware of areas in need of adjustment and are moving accordingly.
