Virtual Industry Visits, Cian Farrell

Articles

Cian Farrell of Technological University Dublin describes a virtual educational approach trialled during the Covid-19 pandemic to engage students during a period of remote learning and educate them on industry processes and practices. Virtual industry visits saw students receive online briefings and tours of manufacturing plants and construction sites from industry representatives to complement their taught modules. The virtual visits have continued since Covid restrictions eased as part of a hybrid approach to learning that increases student exposure to real-life projects. The initiative won the Institution of Structural Engineers Excellence in Structural Engineering Education Award in 2022.

This research assessed the impact of precipitation as an adverse weather condition on the transportation construction in South Dakota. A statistical survey of the data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration was conducted on 554 original stations, which was reduced to 433 stations of them were in South Dakota, then reduced to 170 stations with 30-year data coverage higher than 70 %. Eventually, the data were reduced further for pilot study purposes to a final 10 stations used for analysis in this study. Survey Data: Optimising Retrofitted Insulation For Irish Residential Building Walls, Rakshit D. Muddu, Aimee Byrne, Anthony Robinson Dr.

A survey was conducted to determine the preferred set point temperature and heating pattern among Irish households. The survey was sent to 237 people living across Ireland, out of which 32 respondents skipped the survey and 9 surveys were found to be incomplete. Amongst the counties in Ireland 71.1% respondents were from Dublin, 6.34% from Kildare, 5% from Meath, 5% from Wicklow and in all the remaining counties response rate was below 2%. Buildings are responsible for a considerable fraction of the energy wasted globally every year, and as a result, excess carbon emissions. While heat is lost directly in colder months and climates, resulting in increased heating loads, in hot climates cooling and ventilation is required. This paper investigates the seasonality of the frequency of extreme flood events across the United States (US) and outlines the impact of large-scale climate on its spatio-temporal variability. The analysis was conducted on 317 stream gages from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Hydro-Climatic Data Network (HDCN) over a period of 68 years (1950-2017), resulting in the estimation of the counts of extreme floods (defined as the number of days in each month when the streamflow is greater than the 95th percentile of daily distribution) and the determination of the Markham’s seasonality index for it. 97% of the stations …

The inelastic behavior of a dual performance high-capacity hybrid frame-wall system intended for cold formed steel construction is presented. The investigated frame-wall system features cold formed steel studs to support gravitational loads and a combination of cold formed steel straps and nonprestressed strands to provide braced frame action for lateral loads. In addition, hollow structural steel chords are used to resist overturning moments. Hazard analyses of rainfall-induced landslides have typically been observed to experience a lack of inclusion of measurements of soil moisture within a given soil layer at a site of interest. Soil moisture is a hydromechanical variable capable of both strength gains and reductions within soil systems. However, in situ monitoring of soil moisture at every site of interest is an unfeasible goal. Therefore, spatiotemporal estimates of soil moisture that are representative of in-situ conditions are required for use in subsequent landslide hazard analyses.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted public transportation, causing a substantial decline in bus passengers. In 2021, Bangkok witnessed a 40-60% reduction compared to normal conditions, while Jakarta experienced a staggering 76% decline compared to June 2019. This study aims to assess passengers' intentions to use buses during the pandemic and analyze factors influencing mode choice. Two methodologies were employed: the Structural Equation Model (SEM) to identify factors impacting transportation intentions and the Hybrid Choice Model (HCM) to understand mode choice influencers. อุตสาหกรรมการก่อสร้างสำคัญอย่างยิ่งต่อการพัฒนาประเทศ และยังมีแนวโน้มที่จะมีการเติบโตอย่างต่อเนื่อง ส่งผลต่อความต้องการวัสดุ แรงงาน และมลพิษที่เพิ่มขึ้นอย่างหลีกเลี่ยงไม่ได้ เพื่อลดปัญหาด้านแรงงาน เจ้าของโครงการได้หันมาใช้วิธีการก่อสร้างใหม่ ๆ มากขึ้น เช่น ระบบหล่อสำเร็จ เป็นต้น โดยมีการประเมินว่าระบบหล่อสำเร็จช่วยลดการใช้แรงงานได้ถึง 50% และลดเวลาก่อสร้างได้ 30% อย่างไรก็ตาม ต้นทุนก่อสร้างเป็นเพียงส่วนหนึ่งของต้นทุนตลอดอายุการใช้งาน ทำให้ผลการประเมินต้นทุนรวมในช่วงก่อสร้างและใช้งานอาจแตกต่างจากที่ได้ประเมินในช่วงก่อนการก่อสร้าง ดังนั้นการประเมินต้นทุนค่าใช้จ่ายตลอดอายุโครงการควรนำปัจจัยเสี่ยงมารวมในการวิเคราะห์ด้วย งานวิจัยนี้ศึกษาเปรียบเทียบต้นทุนรวมตลอดอายุของระบบคอนกรีตหล่อในที่และระบบหล่อสำเร็จ โดยประเมินต้นทุนที่เกิดขึ้นในแต่ละกระบวนการทำงาน พร้อมทั้งวิเคราะห์ปัจจัยเสี่ยงด้วยวิธีการวิเคราะห์ความอ่อนไหวรวมไปถึงการใช้แบบจำลองมอนติคาร์โลเพื่อจำลองหาช่วงค่าที่เป็นไปได้ของต้นทุนตลอดอายุการงานในโครงการก่อสร้างตัวอย่างทั้ง 6 โครงการ นอกจากนี้ยังศึกษาถึงปริมาณการปล่อยก๊าซคาร์บอนที่เกิดขึ้นในกิจกรรมผลิตวัสดุก่อสร้างและการขนส่งเพื่อนำไปใช้เป็นค่าพารามิเตอร์ในการประเมินการปล่อยสารคาร์บอนโดยวิธี Coefficient method ในโครงการก่อสร้างตัวอย่างทั้ง 6 โครงการ โดยผลลัพธ์ของการศึกษาคือ สัดส่วนของต้นทุนตลอดอายุการใช้งาน ที่ประกอบไปด้วย (1) ต้นทุนในช่วงเตรียมการและช่วงก่อสร้าง และ (2) ต้นทุนรวมในช่วงการใช้งานทั้งในมุมมองของระบบหล่อในที่และระบบหล่อสำเร็จในโครงการก่อสร้างตัวอย่างทั้ง 6 โครงการ ซึ่งพบว่าทุกโครงการตัวอย่างของต้นทุนตลอดอายุการใช้งานทั้งระบบหล่อในที่และหล่อสำเร็จนั้น มีต้นทุนรวมใน 2 ช่วงแรกมีค่ามากกว่าต้นทุนรวมในช่วงการใช้งาน (O&M phase) และยังพบว่าอัตราส่วนของต้นทุนรวมตลอดอายุการใช้งานของระบบหล่อในที่ต่อต้นทุนตลอดอายุการใช้งานของระบบหล่อสำเร็จนั้นนในแต่ละโครงการตัวอย่าง อยู่ที่ 0.60 – 0.73 (โดยไม่คำนึงถึงมิติด้านเวลาที่แตกต่างกันในช่วงการก่อสร้าง) ในส่วนของปริมาณก๊าซคาร์บอนไดออกไซด์ที่มาจากการขนส่งในโครงการก่อสร้างตัวอย่างทั้ง 6 โครงการ ที่พบว่า ระบบหล่อในที่นั้นมีปริมาณก๊าซคาร์บอนไดออกไซด์ที่มาจากการขนส่งน้อยกว่าระบบหล่อสำเร็จ ซึ่งผลที่ได้จากการศึกษานี้จะช่วยประกอบการตัดสินใจของเจ้าของโครงการในการเลือกวิธีการก่อสร้างที่เหมาะสมในบริบทของต้นทุนรวมและผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม
