Non-Proprietary Ultra-High Performance Concrete (Uhpc) With Application For Retrofitting Deteriorating Infrastructure, Harshdutta I. Pandya
Theses and Dissertations
This research describes a study on the stiffness degradation of reinforced concrete beams due to corrosion of reinforcement and the effect of subsequent retrofitting. A total of eleven beams were tested under cyclic loading history, where the amplitude on subsequent cycles is increased until the beam fails. The two corroded-repaired beams were repaired with a non-proprietary UHPC applied to the tension and compression surfaces, respectively. The results indicated substantial stiffness degradation of the corroded beam that was not retrofitted. The control beam passed the ACI 437 acceptance criteria (Ipr = 0.22, IR = 100.1, IDL = -0.036). The corroded beam …

The substitution of current building materials with sustainable materials is essential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and positively influence climate change when the current construction demand in the world is considered. Wood is one of the primary environmentally friendly construction materials in regard to high carbon storage and low carbon emissions. …
Oxidized Graphitic Nano-Amendment Of Cement Composites: Exploring Truly Low Concentrations And Novel Particle Morphologies, Shohana Iffat
Oxidized Graphitic Nano-Amendment Of Cement Composites: Exploring Truly Low Concentrations And Novel Particle Morphologies, Shohana Iffat
Theses and Dissertations
Oxidized graphitic nanoparticles such as multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), can produce enhancements in physicomechanical properties of cement composites that are relevant to structural and durability performance, provided that said nanoparticles are well dispersed in the composite. Lower-bound MWCNT concentrations are reported in the literature in the range 0.01-0.05% in weight of cement (wt%). Such concentrations may not be costeffective for practical applications and may also be excessive since they would result in a nanoparticle surface area at or above 105 m2 for 1 m3 of cement paste, or 104.5 m2 for 1 m 3 of concrete, …

Mechanical Property Relationships Of Cement Or Lime Stabilized Soils Throughout A Pavement's Life, Leigh E.W. Ayers
Theses and Dissertations
Soil-cement is an integral part of pavement design, especially in areas that are aggregate deprived, such as Mississippi. Current designs are reliant on the relationship of unconfined compressive strength (UCS) to other mechanical properties. The other properties discussed in this dissertation are Modulus of Elasticity (E), Indirect Tensile Strength (St), and Modulus of Rupture (MOR). This dissertation includes a comprehensive review of past design methods and mechanical property relationships. While some mechanical property relationships were shown to be well understood (i.e. St to UCS), others were not as accurate, especially for the later life mechanical properties (i.e. MOR to UCS …

Development And Evaluation Of Seasonal, Continental-Scale Streamflow Forecasts, Elissa Marie Yeates
Theses and Dissertations
Methods of forecasting streamflow using atmospheric ensembles and hydrologic routing have greatly improved over the past decades. These forecasts anticipate the timing and magnitude of streamflow peaks, enabling early warning of floods. Recent advances in atmospheric modeling have enabled production of forecasts months ahead, which are less precise but give a useful sense of trends.
The purpose of this study is to produce and evaluate a seasonal streamflow forecast model using a Muskingum routing hydrologic model coupled with runoff from a land surface model, and atmospheric input from a medium-term atmospheric and precipitation model. To evaluate the skill of the …
Detailing Of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Anchorage For Shear Strengthening, Paul Joseph Ryan
Detailing Of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Anchorage For Shear Strengthening, Paul Joseph Ryan
Theses and Dissertations
Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) have increased in popularity in the repair and strengthening of reduced shear capacity of concrete bridges. Significant design challenges arise when using CFRP to repair or strengthen bridge girders as the top faces of girders are in contact with decking (i.e. the members cannot be fully wrapped). A full wrap laminates all faces with CFRP and ensures that the failure mode is governed by shear fracture combined with, or followed by, fracture of the CFRP. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Structural Design Manual permits three-sided wrapping schemes (i.e. U-wraps), but the CFRP must be …

Classification Of Acoustic Emission Data Into Load Steps Using An Artificial Neural Network, Allen Ross
Classification Of Acoustic Emission Data Into Load Steps Using An Artificial Neural Network, Allen Ross
Theses and Dissertations
The average age of bridges in South Carolina is approaching 40 years, very close to the 50-year service life. Almost 11% of the bridges in South Carolina are rated as structurally deficient, greater than the national average of 7.5% (South 2021). Health monitoring is the concept that in-situ sensors can continuously monitor civil structures and send real time signals of damage. This process allows for automation and could save time and money on the inspection and load rating of bridges. Health monitoring requires sensors that provide uninterrupted data without sacrificing the functionality of the bridge. A prime candidate for this …

A Post-Disaster Construction Portfolio Optimization Framework For Tyndall Afb Rebuild Post Hurricane Michael, Andre J. May
A Post-Disaster Construction Portfolio Optimization Framework For Tyndall Afb Rebuild Post Hurricane Michael, Andre J. May
Theses and Dissertations
Natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, and extreme flooding cause severe social and economic disruptions. Restoration of social and revenue-generating services often requires extensive reconstruction, from the facility to the campus scale. For multi-facility portfolios, decision-makers must prioritize post-disaster reconstruction activities appropriately to ensure facilities and infrastructure are restored. In addition, any expansion or new construction initiatives are ideally completed in order of decision-maker and community preference. Most post-disaster optimization and decision framework research consider a single stakeholder as guiding decisions related to a project portfolio. However, these portfolio prioritization frameworks ignore the effect of multiple stakeholders and competing …

Combined Effects Of Welding Residual Stress And Thermal Expansion In Cwr, Brennan Gedney
Combined Effects Of Welding Residual Stress And Thermal Expansion In Cwr, Brennan Gedney
Theses and Dissertations
Continuously welded rail with flash-butt welded joints has become standard practice for railway construction around the world. Through the process of welding, a residual stress field develops in the joint which typically remains in the rail through its service life. Consequently, the total stress is altered locally in the presence of operation induced stresses. One such stress develops due to thermal expansion of the rail during the daily and seasonal solar radiation heating cycle. This paper seeks to ascertain the combined effects of welding residual stress with thermal expansion through computer simulations. This is aimed at two objectives: determining whether …
Evaluation Of A Trigonometric Grey Model For Estimating And Predicting Pavement Condition, Amara Kouyate
Evaluation Of A Trigonometric Grey Model For Estimating And Predicting Pavement Condition, Amara Kouyate
Theses and Dissertations
States, counties, and municipalities rely on pavement performance curves to forecast future pavement conditions in their jurisdictions. Accurate prediction is essential for budget planning and the identification of candidates for rehabilitation. This study investigates the use of a grey model (GM) to estimate and predict pavement conditions. An advantage of the GMs is that they do not require a large sample size for model estimation. This aspect is important since smaller towns and municipalities often cannot afford to collect pavement condition data frequently due to cost. There are other situations where sample size may be limited, such as using project-level …

The aim is to be able to predict whether a pavement section’s structural condition is poor or not based on Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT), truck percentage, …
Development Of A First-Generation Prototype Laboratory System For Rail Neutral Temperature Measurements, Ellie Yi-Hsien Chao
Development Of A First-Generation Prototype Laboratory System For Rail Neutral Temperature Measurements, Ellie Yi-Hsien Chao
Theses and Dissertations
Modern railway tracks worldwide standardize the use of Continuous Welded Rail (CWR) due to its ability to prevent disadvantages associated with rail joints in a track. CWR is laid when the rail is free of thermal stresses, also known as Rail Neutral Temperature (RNT). RNT is controlled in the CWR installation procedure; however, over time, the temperatures deviate from the RNT. The deviation causes significant thermal stresses introduced in the longitudinal direction of the rail, leading to potential failures such as pull-apart and buckling, causing track integrity and safety of train operation. The most significant potential failure is track buckling …
