Shopping Center Saved By Short Aggregate Piers, Thomas W. Blackburn, Tom M. Farrell
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
We were faced with an extraordinary geotechnical challenge; our client wanted to support large tilt wa11 buildings and pavements for a 32 acre Commercial Shopping Center on 5 to 8 feet of saturated, I lo 3 blow/foot hydraulically placed fill. To make matters more difficult, the site was in the seismically active Napa Valley. We offered 3 solutions; 2 conventional, and 1 unconventional. Our conventional solutions consisted of: 1) piers founded in the normally consolidated clay below the hydraulic fill, or, 2) over-excavation and replacement of the upper 5 to 8 feet of highly unstable soil. Our unconventional solution consisted …

Alcanena is a municipality located in the center of Portugal where about 85% of the Portuguese tanning industries are located, representing 65% of the national production. During decades the industrial waste was disposed directly in the soil and the waste waters discharged into the river without any treatment. Following the recent Portuguese environmental policy, the national authorities decided to rehabilitate this area. First, by the construction of a waste water treatment plant (WWTP) and a impermeabilized lagoon for WWTP mud deposition, then by the construction of a landfill for deposition of the tanning scraps and, finally, when the maximum capacity …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Throughout the Great Lakes, about four million cubic yards of sediments are dredged annually to maintain navigation in channels and harbors for commercial, military and recreational users, and as part of environmental projects. CDF design criteria based on contaminant level and partitioning potential of sediments is presented. CDF designs reflect the level of isolation which the sediments under consideration warrant. In this paper the application of geosynthetic components for limiting contaminant pathways in the CDF containment basin and final closure arc discussed.

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Around Vadodara City (Gujarat) number of chemical industries dispose of water, air and oil based pollutant everyday. The pollution process in soil due to the industrial effluent discharge on to the land and its effect on the geotechnical properties of soil arc discussed in the present case study. Uncontrolled exploitation of the natural resources have resulted in an unanticipated soil behaviour due to environmental degradation. This resulted in an increased interest in the study of environmental geotechnics which is a means of forecasting soil behaviour to the changing environment.

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
PREFACE The research work on automotive components conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla under the sponsorship of the American Iron and Steel Institute began in 1982. During the first six years, studies were made on the basis of static loading. Since May 1988, studies have been concentrated on the effect of strain rate on material properties and the structural strength of cold-formed steel members along with the behavior of hybrid members. The research findings for the period from 1988 through 1997 are summarized in this report. Special thanks are expressed to General Motors Corporation (Dr M. Y. Sheh, Mr. B. …

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Approximately 209 retaining wall structures were visually evaluated under this study for long-term performance. The inspection included concrete crib, single-barrel and double-barrel culvert wing, metal bin, Gabion, rigid concrete, Keystone block, tiedback, mechanically stabilized earth (M.S.E.), Tech Wall, and sound walls. Significant structural distress was observed in several of the wall systems. This report discusses the performance of each wall system and makes recommendations on the future use of these systems.
Investigating Sorbent Geometry Response Surfaces From Sorption Rate Data, H. Michael Harrison
Investigating Sorbent Geometry Response Surfaces From Sorption Rate Data, H. Michael Harrison
Theses and Dissertations
Sorption and desorption of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) into soil particles occurs at Air Force contamination sites. Long-term desorption extends clean up time, costing billions. Accurately modeling desorption will reduce costs and improve clean up designs. State of the art models depict soil as uniform spherical particles which lose the effect of longer sorption path lengths. An alternate approach, the multiple sites in series (MSS) model, describes the sorption capacity of a mixture of soil particle sizes and shapes using a composite particle defined by a two parameter statistical distribution. When the MSS model uses a general radial geometry function …
A Risk Analysis Of Remediation Technologies For A Doe Facility, Helene A. Wilson
A Risk Analysis Of Remediation Technologies For A Doe Facility, Helene A. Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
The Department of Energy is responsible for selecting a remediation technology to clean up the Waste Area Group (WAG) 6 site at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) in Kentucky. WAG 6 is contaminated with an uncertain amount of trichloroethylene (TCE) and technetium-99 (Tc-99). Selecting a remediation technology involves a certain degree of risk because many of these technologies are new or proven only for a specific type of contaminant or a particular set of site conditions. Differences between contaminant type and site conditions are enough to make the performance of a remediation technology uncertain. This research identifies the technological …

Design Of Automotive Structural Components Using High Strength Sheet Steels Transformed Section Method For The Calculation Of Yield Moment Of Cold-Formed Steel Hybrid Beams, Chi-Ling Pan, Wei-Wen Yu
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
INTRODUCTION It has been recognized that material properties and stress-strain relationships of sheet steel can be influenced by the strain rate. Because the member strength is also influenced by dynamic loading, a large number of research projects were conducted for a variety of structural members under specified loading conditions during past three decades. In cold-formed steel design, local buckling is one of the major design features because of the use of large width-to-thickness ratios for compression elements. For the purpose of determining the load-carrying capacity of automotive components, the effective width approach has been used. In view of the fact …

Effects Of Supplemental Viscous Damping On Seismic Response Of Asymmetric-Plan Systems, Rakesh K. Goel
Effects Of Supplemental Viscous Damping On Seismic Response Of Asymmetric-Plan Systems, Rakesh K. Goel
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Coupling between lateral and torsional motions may lead to much larger edge deformations in asymmetric‐plan systems compared to systems with a symmetric plan. Supplemental viscous damping has been found to be effective in reducing deformations in the symmetric‐plan system. This investigation examined how supplemental damping affects the edge deformations in asymmetric‐plan systems. First, the parameters that characterize supplemental viscous damping and its plan‐wise distribution were identified, and then the effects of these parameters on edge deformations were investigated. It was found that supplemental damping reduces edge deformations and that reductions by a factor of up three are feasible with proper …
Seismic Code Analysis Of Multi-Storey Asymmetric Buildings, Anthony P. Harasimowicz, Rakesh K. Goel
Seismic Code Analysis Of Multi-Storey Asymmetric Buildings, Anthony P. Harasimowicz, Rakesh K. Goel
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Static torsional provisions in most seismic codes require that the lateral force at each floor level be applied at some distance from the reference centre at that floor. However, codes do not specify how to determine the locations of these centres. As a result, several different definitions of the reference centres are being used to implement the code analysis. This investigation examined how the results using various reference centres differ and which of these centres would lead to results that are in agreement with those of dynamic analysis. For this purpose three different buildings ranging form torsionally stiff to torsionally …
A Model For Travel Mode Switching, Lei Cao
A Model For Travel Mode Switching, Lei Cao
Dissertations
Transportation policy research assesses the effect of policy changes such as the imposition of a parking charge or the augmentation of passenger rail service, on individual travel behavior. Over the last few decades, Conditional Lo it Model has been strongly advocated among discrete choice models for transportation policy study due to its ease of estimation and realistic outcomes.
This dissertation analyzes the necessity of the entry of constraints in the indirect utility function. These functions are used in discrete choice models and form the basis for travel demand modeling. This dissertation proposes a hypothesis that the explicit entry of constraints …

Impact Of Access Points On Multilane Highway Accidents, Tao Qu
Theses
This thesis presents an analysis of reported accidents on multilane highways and regression models that identify the primary explanatory variables that have a significant effect on accident rates midblock to signalized intersections. The analysis was based on traffic and reported accident data provided by New Jersey DOT. The access points per mile and the accident rates per million-vehicle-miles-traveled were analyzed based on a large number of roadway sections which were selected from five NJ State routes. Comparative accident analysis related with traffic and roadway geometric characteristics were performed. The analysis showed that approximately 30% of accidents occurred between intersections, which …

Lateral Resistance Of Ring-Shank Nail Connections In Southern Pine Lumber, R D. Theilen, D A. Bender, David Pollock, S G. Winistorfer
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
Ring-shank nails are used in engineered structures with lateral connection design values based on theoretically derived equations which were validated only for common nails. The goal of this study was to quantify the input parameters and lateral connection strength of several types of ring-shank nails in Southern Pine lumber and critically evaluate the applicability of the theoretical equations for ring-shank nails.
Two sizes of galvanized and ungalvanized, hardened steel ring-shank nails from two manufacturers were studied. The hardened, ring-shank nails carried significantly higher loads than the common wire nails studied. Because the current method of determining yield load does not …
Genetic Algorithm Development For Multiobjective Optimization Of Structures, Franklin Y. Cheng, Dan Li
Genetic Algorithm Development For Multiobjective Optimization Of Structures, Franklin Y. Cheng, Dan Li
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Genetic algorithms (GAs) have the characteristic of maintaing a population of solutions and can search in a parallel manner for many nondominated solutions. These features coincide with the requirement of seeking a Pareto optimal set in a multiobjective (multicriteria, vector) optimization problem. The retionale for multiobjective optimization via GAs is that at each generation, the fitness of each individual is defined according to its nondominated property. Because nondominated individuals are assigned the highest fitness values, the convergence of a population will go th the nondominated zone: the Pareto optimal set. Based on this concept, a Pareto, GA, whose goal is …
Stability And Performance Of Feedback Control Systems With Time Delays, M. S. Ali, Z. K. Hou, Mohammad N. Noori
Stability And Performance Of Feedback Control Systems With Time Delays, M. S. Ali, Z. K. Hou, Mohammad N. Noori
Office of the Dean (CENG) Scholarship
This paper investigates the time delay effects on the stability and performance of active feedback control systems for engineering structures. A computer algorithm is developed for stability analysis of a SDOF system with unequal delay time pair in the velocity and displacement feedback loops. It is found that there may exist multiple stable regions in the plane of the time delay pair, which contain time delays greater than the maximum allowable values obtained by previous studies. The size, shape and location of these stable and unstable regions depend on the system parameters and the feedback control gains. For systems with …

Interactions of expansive clay soils with transportation facilities have caused billions of dollars of damage. In the process of determining agents and methodologies to overcome expansive clay behavior, multiple injections of chemical agents into the subgrade to modify clay behavior are most promising. A study was conducted to optimize a potassium-rich solution of four parts. The modifying solution has been injected into expansive clay subgrades with success since the early 1970s. A laboratory methodology was developed to inject specimens multiple times and to conduct swell tests. Screening tests were conducted to evaluate linear effects that each of the four constituents …

The ability of single doses of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) to induce oxidative stress in hepatic and some extrahepatic tissues of animals is well documented. However, no previous study has examined the ability of TCDD to induce oxidative stress and tissue damage in brain in vivo. In this study the ability of TCDD to induce oxidative stress in brain tissues of mice was studied after subchronic exposures. Groups of female B6C3F1 mice were treated orally with TCDD (0, 0.45, 1.5, 15, and 150 ng/kg/day) for 13 weeks, 5 days/week. The animals were euthanized 3 days after the last treatment and brain tissues …
