ABSTRACT
Photobioreactor Design for Improved Energy Efficiency of Microalgae Production
Alexander Burns
The objective of this research was to investigate a new photobioreactor (PBR) design for microalgae production that retains the typical advantages of existing tubular PBRs while reducing power consumption by providing simultaneous culture circulation and gas exchange with airlift alone and no centrifugal recirculating pump. Traditional tubular PBR designs feature a compressed air supply and a centrifugal pump for culture circulation and gas exchange. Circulation and gas exchange in a closed-system PBR is necessary to keep the algae suspended and to provide sufficient mass transfer (mainly for the …
Reassessment Of Biowish Activation Procedure For Denitrification, William Wah Yee
Reassessment Of Biowish Activation Procedure For Denitrification, William Wah Yee
Master's Theses
BiOWiSHTM – Aqua is a blend of preserved multi-bacteria culture with the capability of denitrification. If an anaerobic nitrate rich activation procedure is used instead of the standard aerobic activation procedure, the denitrification rate is increased by 28 percent under the conditions of 30°C, 1C:1N, 200mg/L of carbon, and 200mg/L nitrogen.
Temperature Influence And Heat Management Requirements Of Microalgae Cultivation In Photobioreactors, Thomas Hagen Mehlitz
Temperature Influence And Heat Management Requirements Of Microalgae Cultivation In Photobioreactors, Thomas Hagen Mehlitz
Master's Theses
Microalgae are considered one of the most promising feedstocks for biofuel production for the future. The most efficient way to produce vast amounts of algal biomass is the use of closed tubular photobioreactors (PBR). The heat requirement for a given system is a major concern since the best algae growth rates are obtained between 25-30 °C, depending on the specific strain. A procedure to determine temperature influence on algal growth rates was developed for a lab-scale PBR system using the species Chlorella. A maximum growth rate of 1.44 doublings per day at 29 °C (optimal temperature) was determined. In addition, …
Oaming Characteristics Of The Food-Industry Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant, Samwel V. Manyele
Oaming Characteristics Of The Food-Industry Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant, Samwel V. Manyele
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Intensive foaming observed during aeration of the aerobic food industry wastewater treatment plant is presented. This study was conducted to establish the foaming characteristics using a pilot three-phase fluidized bed bioreactor (TPFBB). A fluidization column (0.2 m i.d. and 6 m high) was used. The TPFBB was loaded with variable masses of novel biomass support particles (BSP). Wastewater samples collected from a plant processing both vegetable oil (VOPWW) and soap (SPWW) were immediately introduced in the TPFBB for aeration. The characteristics studied include: variation of foam volume with time, foam multiplicity, foaming and foam collapse rates. The SPWW produced excessive …

A procedure is presented for evaluating and comparing the biological activity of biofilms attached to various biofilm carriers by measurement of the glucose consumption rate. This technique allows for the economical design and selection of small particulate biofilm carriers that will maximize substrate removal when used in industrial-scale fluidized bioreactors. Methods for ensuring reproducible results are described. To support the glucose consumption rate findings, biofilm dry weights were obtained at the conclusion of activity rate experiments, and scanning electron micrographs were taken to evaluate the presence of biofilm and to view surface characteristics. Fourteen different biofilm carriers were evaluated ranging …

Socio-Economic Impacts Of Computer Viruses In Tanzania, M Victor
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
This paper reports on a research project conducted with an objective of identifying and assessing various approaches used by different computer users (Management, System Administrators and end users) in Tanzania to combat computer viruses (CVs), and to assess users' awareness level on CVs. Specifically, the study aimed at assessing the awareness level on CVs to the Tanzanian business community; analyze the socio -economic impact caused by CVs in Tanzania and; assess existing methods, capacity and limitations on controlling CVs in Tanzania. Data was collected using both questionnaires and interview from financial institutions such as NBC and BOT, and telecommunications sector …

Biological Reduction Of Perchlorate In Ion Exchange Regenerant Solutions Containing High Salinity And Ammonium Levels, Tina M. Gingras, Jacimaria R. Batista
Biological Reduction Of Perchlorate In Ion Exchange Regenerant Solutions Containing High Salinity And Ammonium Levels, Tina M. Gingras, Jacimaria R. Batista
Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research
The most promising technologies to remove perchlorate from water are ion exchange and biological reduction. Although successful, ion exchange only separates perchlorate from water; it does not eliminate it from the environment. The waste streams from these systems contain the caustic or saline regenerant solutions used in the process as well as high levels of perchlorate. Biological reduction could be used to treat the regenerant waste solutions from the ion exchange process. A treatment scheme, combining ion exchange and biodegradation, is proposed to completely remove perchlorate from the environment. Perchlorate-laden resins generate brines containing salt concentrations up to 6% or …
Application Of Vibrational Techniques In Determination Of Dynamic Properties Of Agricultural Products-State Of The Arton Of Vibrational Techniques In Determination Of Dynamic Properties Of Agricultural Products-State Of The Art, Silas Kajuna
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Vibration is one of the techniques employed in the determination of dynamic properties of fruits and vegetables. It entails generation of a mechanical or acoustic vibrational signal which is propagated through the flesh of the agricultural material. A transducer is either attached or held close to the specimen to monitor the propagation of the signal through the specimen. The manner in which the signal is transmitted through the material is analyzed, and the dynamic properties of the specimen which relate to its firmness or its internal being are derived. The technique has been around for the past 30 years or …
Production Of Fermentable Sugars From Waterhyacinth By High-Temperature Dilute-Acid Hydrolysis Method, J. H. Y. Katima
Production Of Fermentable Sugars From Waterhyacinth By High-Temperature Dilute-Acid Hydrolysis Method, J. H. Y. Katima
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
A study on acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of Waterhyacinth (WH) biomass for production of monomeric sugars has been done. Waterhyacinth (Eichhornia Crassipes) plants were obtained from Lake Victoria. A yield of 18.5% w/w fermentable sugars was achieved during hydrolysis of oven-dried Waterhyacinth (ODWH) biomass at 220°C and 1.5% w/w H₂SO₄ acid. The waterhyacinth (WH) hydrolysates obtained from a high-temperature dilute-acid hydrolysis were rich in six-carbon (C₆) sugars (glucose) which could be fermented to ethanol. The production of fermentable sugars from waterhyacinth biomass is a promising new opportunity for its economic value which can in turn accelerate its rate of harvest and utilization.

Sufficiency Conditions For Constrained Optima, Ju-Chang Huang, Robert M. Wellek
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Sufficiency conditions for constrained optimization problems were derived by the use of constrained second total derivatives. The results are in a simpler form than the Schechter and Beveridge relation. The sufficiency conditions of Phipps were corrected. © 1971, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
