A Hybrid Optimization Technique Applied To The Intermediate-Target Optimal Control Problem, Clay J. Humphreys, Richard G. Cobb, David R. Jacques, Jonah A. Reeger
Faculty Publications
The DoD has introduced the concept of Manned-Unmanned Teaming, a subset of which is the loyal wingman. Optimal control techniques have been proposed as a method for rapidly solving the intermediate-target (mid-point constraint) optimal control problem. Initial results using direct orthogonal collocation and a gradient-based method for solving the resulting nonlinear program reveals a tendency to converge to or to get `stuck’ in locally optimal solutions. The literature suggested a hybrid technique in which a particle swarm optimization is used to quickly find a neighborhood of a more globally minimal solution, at which point the algorithm switches to a gradient-based …
Real-Time Implementation Of Vision-Aided Monocular Navigation For Small Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aerial Systems, Timothy I. Machin
Real-Time Implementation Of Vision-Aided Monocular Navigation For Small Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aerial Systems, Timothy I. Machin
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this project was to develop and implement algorithms to demonstrate real-time positioning of a UAV using a monocular camera combined with previously collected orthorectified imagery. Unlike previous tests, this project did not utilize a full inertial navigation system (INS) for attitude, but instead had to rely on the attitude obtained by inexpensive commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) autopilots. The system consisted of primarily COTS components and open-source software, and was own over Camp Atterbury, IN for a sequence of flight tests in Fall 2015. The system obtained valid solutions over much of the flight path, identifying features in the …
Visual-Ins Using A Human Operator And Converted Measurements, Turner J. Montgomery
Visual-Ins Using A Human Operator And Converted Measurements, Turner J. Montgomery
Theses and Dissertations
A method human operated INS aiding is explored in which the pilot identifies and tracks a ground feature of unknown position over a short measurement epoch using an E/O sensor. One then refers to Visual-INS. In contrast to current research trends, a human operator is entrusted with visually tracking the ground feature. In addition, a less conventional measurement linearization technique is applied to generate “converted” measurements. A linear regression algorithm is then applied to the converted measurements providing an estimate of the INS horizontal velocity error and accelerometer biases. At the completion of the measurement epoch, the INS is corrected …
Evaluation Of Verification Approaches Applied To A Nonlinear Control System, Kerianne H. Gross
Evaluation Of Verification Approaches Applied To A Nonlinear Control System, Kerianne H. Gross
Theses and Dissertations
As the demand for increasingly complex and autonomous systems grows, designers may consider computational and artificial intelligence methods for more advanced, re- active control. While the performance gained by such increasingly intelligent systems may be superior to traditional control techniques, the lack of transparency in the systems and opportunity for emergent behavior limits their application in the field. New verification and validation methods must be developed to ensure the output of such controllers do not put the system or any people interacting with it in danger. This challenge was highlighted by the former Air Force Chief Scientist in his 2010 …
Investigation Into Active Spanwise Camber Deformation On The Lateral Stability And Roll Control Of The X-56a Compared To Conventional Ailerons, Eric T. Yerly
Theses and Dissertations
"This research compares the stability and roll characteristics of an X-56A using AFRL’s Variable Camber Complaint wing technology to actively change wing camber compared to conventional ailerons deflected at set angles. An analysis of the stability and roll characteristics was modeled using a 3-D vortex lattice theory simulation, and that data was compared to wind tunnel testing to verify and validate the model results. Wind tunnel data was collected using 19 inch 3-D printed scale models with wings fabricated with a pre-determined percentage of camber deformation, as well as models with fixed aileron deflections. The full span model changed camber …
Pilot Assisted Inertial Navigation System Aiding Using Bearings-Only Measurements Taken Over Time, Anthony T. Mirabile
Pilot Assisted Inertial Navigation System Aiding Using Bearings-Only Measurements Taken Over Time, Anthony T. Mirabile
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this work is to develop an alternative INS aiding source other than the GPS, while preserving the autonomy of the integrated navigation system. It is proposed to develop a modernized method of aerial navigation using driftmeter measurements from an E/O system for ground feature tracking, and an independent altitude sensor in conjunction with the INS. The pilot will track a ground feature with the E/O system, while the aircraft is on autopilot holding constant airspeed, altitude, and heading during an INS aiding session. The ground feature measurements from the E/O system and the INS output form measurements …
On The Integration Of Medium Wave Infrared Cameras For Vision-Based Navigation, Justin S. Tharp
On The Integration Of Medium Wave Infrared Cameras For Vision-Based Navigation, Justin S. Tharp
Theses and Dissertations
The ubiquitous nature of GPS has fostered its widespread integration of navigation into a variety of applications, both civilian and military. One alternative to ensure continued flight operations in GPS-denied environments is vision-aided navigation, an approach that combines visual cues from a camera with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to estimate the navigation states of a moving body. The majority of vision-based navigation research has been conducted in the electro-optical (EO) spectrum, which experiences limited operation in certain environments. The aim of this work is to explore how such approaches extend to infrared imaging sensors. In particular, it examines the …
Expected Position Error For An Onboard Satellite Gps Receiver, Anthony S. Williams
Expected Position Error For An Onboard Satellite Gps Receiver, Anthony S. Williams
Theses and Dissertations
The Global Positioning System (GPS) constellation provides ranging information that delivers inexpensive, high precision positioning for terrestrial users. Satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) can use an onboard GPS receiver resulting in meter-level navigation solution accuracy. There are limitations to using GPS for positioning for satellites above LEO. The number of GPS satellites who's signal can be received decreases as the receivers altitude approaches that of the GPS constellation. Above the GPS constellation, the available GPS signals for ranging will originate from satellites on the opposite side of Earth. This research calculates the available GPS signals to the receiver and …
Error Characterization Of Flight Trajectories Reconstructed Using Structure From Motion, Daniel C. Alix
Error Characterization Of Flight Trajectories Reconstructed Using Structure From Motion, Daniel C. Alix
Theses and Dissertations
This research effort assessed the accuracy of Structure from Motion (SFM) algorithms in replicating aircraft fight trajectories. Structure from Motion techniques can be used to estimate aircraft trajectory by determining the position and pose of an aircraft mounted camera from a sequential series of images taken during flight. An algorithm is proposed and implemented that successfully reconstructed aircraft trajectory using only a known starting position and a sequential series of images. The error in and reliability of the algorithm was found to be a function of image resolution as well as the amount of overlap and angular separation between sequential …
Navigation Constellation Design Using A Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm, Heather C. Diniz
Navigation Constellation Design Using A Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm, Heather C. Diniz
Theses and Dissertations
In satellite constellation design, performance and cost of the system drive the design process. The Global Positioning System (GPS) constellation is currently used to provide positioning and timing worldwide. As satellite technology has improved over the years, the cost to develop and maintain the satellites has increased. Using a constellation design tool, it is possible to analyze the tradeoffs of new navigation constellation designs (Pareto fronts) that illustrate the tradeoffs between position dilution of precision (PDOP) and system cost. This thesis utilized Satellite Tool Kit (STK) to calculate PDOP values of navigation constellations, and the Unmanned Spacecraft Cost Model (USCM) …

Automated satellite proximity operations is an increasingly relevant area of mission operations for the US Air Force with potential to significantly enhance space situational awareness (SSA). Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is a computer vision method of constructing and updating a 3D map while keeping track of the location and orientation of the imaging agent inside the map. The main objective of this research effort is to design a monocular SLAM method customized for the space environment. The method developed in this research will be implemented in an indoor proximity operations simulation laboratory. A run-time analysis is performed, showing near …
Optimal Recovery Trajectories For Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance Systems (Auto Gcas), Angela W. Suplisson
Optimal Recovery Trajectories For Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance Systems (Auto Gcas), Angela W. Suplisson
Theses and Dissertations
The USAF's F-16 Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (Auto GCAS) uses a single pre-planned roll to wings- level and 5-g pull-up to meet the operational requirements of being both aggressive and timely, meaning that extremely agile avoidance maneuvers will be executed at the last second to avoid the ground. There currently exists no similar Auto GCAS for manned military heavy' aircraft with lower climb performance such as transport, tanker, or bomber aircraft. This research proposes a new optimal control approach to the ground collision avoidance problem for heavy aircraft by mapping the aggressive and timely requirements of the automatic recovery …
Theoretical Limits Of Lunar Vision Aided Navigation With Inertial Navigation System, David W. Jones
Theoretical Limits Of Lunar Vision Aided Navigation With Inertial Navigation System, David W. Jones
Theses and Dissertations
The precision navigation capabilities of the Global Positioning System (GPS) are used extensively within US military operations. However, GPS is highly vulnerable to intentional and unintentional external interference. Therefore, a need exists to develop a non-GPS precision navigation method to operate in GPS degraded environments. This research effort presents the theoretical limits of a precision navigation method based on an inertial navigation system (INS) aided by angle measurements with respect to lunar surface features observed by a fixed camera. To accomplish this task, an extended Kalman filter (EKF) was implemented to estimate INS drift errors and bring in simulated lunar …
Precision Relative Positioning For Automated Aerial Refueling From A Stereo Imaging System, Kyle P. Werner
Precision Relative Positioning For Automated Aerial Refueling From A Stereo Imaging System, Kyle P. Werner
Theses and Dissertations
The United States Air Force relies upon aerial refueling to fulfill its missions. Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) do not currently have access to this capability due to the lack of an on-board pilot to safely maintain a refueling position. This research examines stereo vision for precision relative navigation in order to accomplish the Automated Aerial Refueling (AAR) task. Previous work toward an AAR solution has involved the use of Differential Global Positioning (DGPS), Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), and monocular vision. This research aims to leverage organic systems in future aircraft to compliment these solutions. …

Terrain Referenced Navigation Using Sift Features In Lidar Range-Based Data, Matthew T. Leines
Theses and Dissertations
The use of GNSS in aiding navigation has become widespread in aircraft. The long term accuracy of INS are enhanced by frequent updates of the highly precise position estimations GNSS provide. Unfortunately, operational environments exist where constant signal or the requisite number of satellites are unavailable, significantly degraded, or intentionally denied. This thesis describes a novel algorithm that uses scanning LiDAR range data, computer vision features, and a reference database to generate aircraft position estimations to update drifting INS estimates. The algorithm uses a single calibrated scanning LiDAR to sample the range and angle to the ground as an aircraft …

Optimal Collision Avoidance Trajectories For Unmanned/Remotely Piloted Aircraft, Nathan E. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
The post-911 environment has punctuated the force-multiplying capabilities that Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) provides combatant commanders at all echelons on the battlefield. Not only have unmanned aircraft systems made near-revolutionary impacts on the battlefield, their utility and proliferation in law enforcement, homeland security, humanitarian operations, and commercial applications have likewise increased at a rapid rate. As such, under the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, the United States Congress tasked the FAA to provide for the safe integration of civil unmanned aircraft systems into the national airspace system (NAS) as soon as practicable, but not later …
Cloud-Induced Uncertainty For Visual Navigation, Alyssa N. Gutierrez
Cloud-Induced Uncertainty For Visual Navigation, Alyssa N. Gutierrez
Theses and Dissertations
This research addresses the numerical distortion of features due to the presence of clouds in an image. The research aims to quantify the probability of a mismatch between two features in a single image, which will describe the likelihood that a visual navigation system incorrectly tracks a feature throughout an image sequence, leading to position miscalculations. First, an algorithm is developed for calculating transparency of clouds in images at the pixel level. The algorithm determines transparency based on the distance between each pixel color and the average pixel color of the clouds. The algorithm is used to create a dataset …
The Differential Vector Phase-Locked Loop For Global Navigation Satellite System Signal Tracking, James J. Brewer
The Differential Vector Phase-Locked Loop For Global Navigation Satellite System Signal Tracking, James J. Brewer
Theses and Dissertations
A novel differential vector phase-locked loop (DVPLL) is derived that takes GNSS code-phase and carrier-phase measurements from a base station and uses them to maintain an integer ambiguity resolved quality solution directly in the vector tracking loop of a rover receiver. The only state variables estimated and used to create the replica code and carrier signals from the base station measurements are three position and two clock states for a static test. Closing the individual loops solely through the navigation filter makes this a pure vector method. For short baselines, where differential atmospheric errors are small, the DVPLL can be …
Non-Linear Optimization Applied To Angle-Of-Arrival Satellite-Based Geolocation, Stephen D. Hartzell
Non-Linear Optimization Applied To Angle-Of-Arrival Satellite-Based Geolocation, Stephen D. Hartzell
Theses and Dissertations
Geolocation is a common application for satellite systems. This involves estimating an object's location (herein called the subject) based on noisy satellite data. Many geolocation methods exist; however, none are tailored specifically for the unique problems faced by satellite systems. Some satellites are so far from the subject being localized that by the time the satellite receives a signal from the subject it might have moved appreciably. Furthermore, some satellites or terrestrial sensors may be much closer to the subject than others. Therefore, sensors may need to be weighted based upon their distance to the subject being localized. In addition, …
Optimal Uav Path Planning For Tracking A Moving Ground Vehicle With A Gimbaled Camera, Riley A. Livermore
Optimal Uav Path Planning For Tracking A Moving Ground Vehicle With A Gimbaled Camera, Riley A. Livermore
Theses and Dissertations
This research develops a path planning algorithm that autonomously controls a UAV to provide convoy overwatch. The optimization algorithm determines the best path to y through developing a cost function that minimizes the control effort of the UAV and the deviation from a desired slant range. A heuristic-based algorithm was developed and implemented on the autopilot to approximate the optimal solution. In flight test, the UAV successfully tracked a moving ground vehicle by continually placing the UAV's loiter point directly above the ground vehicle's current location. This method was called the \follow-me mode and provided the baseline for real-world UAV …
Image-Aided Navigation Using Cooperative Binocular Stereopsis, Justin T. Soeder
Image-Aided Navigation Using Cooperative Binocular Stereopsis, Justin T. Soeder
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis proposes a novel method for cooperatively estimating the positions of two vehicles in a global reference frame based on synchronized image and inertial information. The proposed technique - cooperative binocular stereopsis - leverages the ability of one vehicle to reliably localize itself relative to the other vehicle using image data which enables motion estimation from tracking the three dimensional positions of common features. Unlike popular simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) techniques, the method proposed in this work does not require that the positions of features be carried forward in memory. Instead, the optimal vehicle motion over a single …
Gps Multipath Reduction With Correlator Beamforming, Jason M. Barhorst
Gps Multipath Reduction With Correlator Beamforming, Jason M. Barhorst
Theses and Dissertations
This research effort investigates the feasibility of beamforming using a single Global Positioning System (GPS) front end. Traditional methods of beamforming use multiple front ends, typically one per antenna element. By enabling a receiver to sample a switched antenna array, the hardware cost of implementing a GPS antenna array can be significantly reduced. Similar techniques of reducing the number of receivers have been used by Locata Corporation in the design of their non-GPS positioning systems. However, Locata Corporation's local transmitters provide a signal strength much higher than GPS's signal strength. For this reason, the inclusion of low-noise amplifiers into the …

Error Characterization Of Vision-Aided Navigation Systems, Daniel A . Marietta
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this work is to characterize the errors committed by an Image Aided Navigation (IAN) algorithm that has been developed for use as a navigation tool in GPS denied areas. The filter under study was developed by the Air Force Institute of Technology's Advanced Navigation Technology center, and has been the focus of numerous research efforts. Unfortunately, these studies have all been based on single runs or simulations, and such results may not be indicative of the true filter performance. This problem extends to IAN publications in general; no analysis of IAN based upon a sizable real world …
Information Encoding On A Pseudo Random Noise Radar Waveform, Joshua A . Hardin
Information Encoding On A Pseudo Random Noise Radar Waveform, Joshua A . Hardin
Theses and Dissertations
Navigation requires knowledge of current location and a planned destination. This is true with manned vehicles and unmanned vehicles. There are many ways to acquire the current location, including global positioning system (GPS), triangulation, radar, and dead reckoning. Today GPS is the most reliable and accurate navigation technique when there is a clear, unobstructed view of the satellite constellation. Various sensors can be used to perform indoor navigation; however, when the vehicle is autonomous the sensors need to provide the exact location to the system. This research determined if using a template replay strategy has the same RNR performance as …

High Frequency Magnetic Field Direction Finding Using Mgl-S8a B-Dot Sensors, Michael D. Archer
Theses and Dissertations
Aircraft based direction finding (DF) in the high frequency (HF) band is difficult due to the aircraft's size with respect to wavelength and limited azimuthal resolution. A B-dot sensor is useful for detection of the time varying magnetic field and offers improved integration into an aircraft. What the B-dot sensor gains in integration it gives up in sensitivity because it is designed for frequencies above 5 GHz. Design of an airborne HFDF array using Bdot sensors is based in maximizing the physical extent of the array and eliminating multiple main beams. The goals of this research are to complete a …

Real-Time Heading Estimation Using Perspective Features, James W. Dean
Theses and Dissertations
There are a large number of commercially available quad-rotor helicopters available from various manufacturers. All of these systems rely on a low cost MEMS based inertial measurement system for stabilization and navigation. These low cost inertial systems are all subject to rapid error growth in their attitude and position estimates unless bounded by external measurements. This thesis created real-time algorithm to integrate measurements from visual cues with measurements from onboard sensors to estimate the attitude position and velocity of a quad-rotor helicopter in a local navigation frame, a system model for the ARDrone, and a feed-back controller for the vehicle's …

Theses and Dissertations
Inertial navigation systems (INS) using cold-atom interferometry are currently under development, and sensors in these systems are expected to be several orders of magnitude more ccurate than current navigation grade sensors. This signi cant increase in accuracy motivates the need to explore how these high accuracy inertial navigation systems can be integrated with other sensors. This research focuses on methods of integrating cold atom interferometry INS with conventional navigation grade INS, as well as with GPS. Results from a full 6 degree of freedom simulation show that integrating CAI INS with navigation grade INS is a successful way to address …
