Satellite Relative Motion Control For Mit's Spheres Program, Samuel P. Barbaro
Theses and Dissertations
Autonomous formation flight concepts and algorithms have great potential to revolutionize spacecraft operations enabling missions to perform autonomous docking, in-space refueling, in-space robotic assembly, and space debris removal. Such tasks require the implementation of speed and path control algorithms to maneuver satellites along relative paths with specified rates along those paths. This thesis uses MATLAB® and SIMULINK® to design and simulate a control algorithm capable of providing relative speed and path control between satellites with a pointing error of less than two degrees, a position error of less than two millimeters, and a millimeter per second of velocity error. The …
Hybrid Solution Of Stochastic Optimal Control Problems Using Gauss Pseudospectral Method And Generalized Polynomial Chaos Algorithms, Gerald C. Cottrill
Hybrid Solution Of Stochastic Optimal Control Problems Using Gauss Pseudospectral Method And Generalized Polynomial Chaos Algorithms, Gerald C. Cottrill
Theses and Dissertations
Two numerical methods, Gauss Pseudospectral Method and Generalized Polynomial Chaos Algorithm, were combined to form a hybrid algorithm for solving nonlinear optimal control and optimal path planning problems with uncertain parameters. The algorithm was applied to two concept demonstration problems: a nonlinear optimal control problem with multiplicative uncertain elements and a mission planning problem sponsored by USSTRATCOM. The mission planning scenario was constructed to find the path that minimizes the probability of being killed by lethal threats whose locations are uncertain to statistically quantify the effects those uncertainties have on the flight path solution, and to use the statistical properties …

Enhanced Image-Aided Navigation Algorithm With Automatic Calibration And Affine Distortion Prediction, Juan D. Jurado
Theses and Dissertations
This research aims at improving two key steps within the image aided navigation process: camera calibration and landmark tracking. The camera calibration step is improved by automating the point correspondence calculation within the standard camera calibration algorithm, thereby reducing the required time for calibration while maintaining the output model accuracy. The feature landmark tracking step is improved by digitally simulating affine distortions on input images in order to calculate more accurate feature descriptors for improved feature matching in high relative viewpoint change. These techniques are experimentally demonstrated in an outdoor environment with a consumer-grade inertial sensor and three imaging sensors, …

Precision Position, Navigation, And Timing Without The Global Positioning System, Kenneth A. Fisher, John F. Raquet
Faculty Publications
The NAVSTAR Global Positioning System GPS has revolutionized modern warfare. Since 2005 almost all US precision-guided munitions have used GPS targeting data. Consequently, weapons delivery systems are able to strike enemy targets with precision, often resulting in little or no collateral damage. Furthermore, nearly all military assets, including aircraft, tanks, ships, missiles, mortar rounds, cargo boxes, and dismounted Soldiers rely on the accurate position determination that GPS provides. For military users of this system, two main limitations emerge. First, the system relies on line of sight that is, the satellites must be in view of the receiver s antenna so …

Optical Flow-Based Odometry For Underground Tunnel Exploration, Terra Kier
Theses and Dissertations
As military operations in degraded or GPS-denied environments continue to increase in frequency and importance, there is an increased necessity to be able to determine precision location within these environments. Furthermore, authorities are finding a record number of tunnels along the U.S.-Mexico border; therefore, underground tunnel characterization is becoming a high priority for U.S. Homeland Security as well. This thesis investigates the performance of a new image registration technique based on a two camera optical- flow configuration using phase correlation techniques. These techniques differ from other image based navigation methods but present a viable alternative increasing autonomy and answering the …
Vision-Aided Autonomous Precision Weapon Terminal Guidance Using A Tightly-Coupled Ins And Predictive Rendering Techniques, Jonathan W. Beich
Vision-Aided Autonomous Precision Weapon Terminal Guidance Using A Tightly-Coupled Ins And Predictive Rendering Techniques, Jonathan W. Beich
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis documents the development of the Vision-Aided Navigation using Statistical Predictive Rendering (VANSPR) algorithm which seeks to enhance the endgame navigation solution possible by inertial measurements alone. The eventual goal is a precision weapon that does not rely on GPS, functions autonomously, thrives in complex 3-D environments, and is impervious to jamming. The predictive rendering is performed by viewpoint manipulation of computer-generated of target objects. A navigation solution is determined by an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) which corrects positional errors by comparing camera images with a collection of statistically significant virtual images. Results indicate that the test algorithm is …

Two Dimensional Positioning And Heading Solution For Flying Vehicles Using A Line-Scanning Laser Radar (Ladar), Brady T. Christel
Theses and Dissertations
Emerging technology in small autonomous flying vehicles requires the systems to have a precise navigation solution in order to perform tasks. In many critical environments, such as indoors, GPS is unavailable necessitating the development of supplemental aiding sensors to determine precise position. This research investigates the use of a line scanning laser radar (LADAR) as a standalone two dimensional position and heading navigation solution and sets up the device for augmentation into existing navigation systems. A fast histogram correlation method is developed to operate in real-time on board the vehicle providing position and heading updates at a rate of 10 …
High Frequency Direction Finding Using Structurally Integrated Antennas On A Large Airborne Platform, Clair F. Corbin
High Frequency Direction Finding Using Structurally Integrated Antennas On A Large Airborne Platform, Clair F. Corbin
Theses and Dissertations
Estimating the angle of arrival (AOA) of a high frequency (HF) signal, 2-32 MHz, is challenging, especially if the antenna array is installed on a platform with dimensions on the order of one wavelength. Accurate AOA estimates are necessary for search and rescue operations and geolocating RF emitters of interest. This research examines the performance of a direction finding (DF) system using structurally integrated (SI) antennas installed on an airborne platform which allows the aircraft structure to become the receiving element. Two simulated DF systems are analyzed at 4 and 11 MHz. The relationship between the number of SI antennas …
Polarimetric Enhancements To Electro-Optical Aided Navigation Techniques, Jeremiah D. Johnson
Polarimetric Enhancements To Electro-Optical Aided Navigation Techniques, Jeremiah D. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Navigation in indoor and urban environments by small unmanned systems is a topic of interest for the Air Force. The Advanced Navigation Technology Center at the Air Force Institute of Technology is continually looking for novel approaches to navigation in GPS deprived environments. Inertial sensors have been coupled with image aided concepts, such as feature tracking, with good results. However, feature density in areas with large, flat, smooth surfaces tends to be low. Polarimetric sensors have been used for surface reconstruction, surface characterization and outdoor navigation. This thesis combines aspects of some of these algorithms along with a realistic, micro-facet …
Long Term Quadrotor Stabilization, Nicolas S. Hamilton
Long Term Quadrotor Stabilization, Nicolas S. Hamilton
Theses and Dissertations
The work of this thesis focuses on the IMU and getting the best performance possible out of the IMU to achieve better long term stability and a better navigation solution. This is done in two ways. First, the IMU accelerometer output is examined to determine if it is possible to use accelerometers to determine attitude. If the quadrotor is stationary or moving at constant velocity, the roll and pitch angles can be determined. Additionally, the accelerometers can be used to determine angular accelerations and angular rates which are integrated to determine heading. The second approach models the quadrotor and uses …
Non-Gps Navigation Using Vision-Aiding And Active Radio Range Measurements, Erich H. Lichtfuss
Non-Gps Navigation Using Vision-Aiding And Active Radio Range Measurements, Erich H. Lichtfuss
Theses and Dissertations
The military depends on the Global Positioning System (GPS) for a wide array of advanced weaponry guidance and precision navigation systems. Lack of GPS access makes precision navigation very difficult. Inclusion of inertial sensors in existing navigation systems provides short-term precision navigation, but drifts significantly over long-term navigation. This thesis is motivated by the need for inertial sensor drift-constraint in degraded and denied GPS environments. The navigation system developed consists of inertial sensors, a simulated barometer, three Raytheon DH500 radios, and a stereo-camera image-aiding system. The Raytheon DH500 is a combat communication radio which also provides range measurements between radios. …
Vision Aided Inertial Navigation System Augmented With A Coded Aperture, Jamie R. Morrison
Vision Aided Inertial Navigation System Augmented With A Coded Aperture, Jamie R. Morrison
Theses and Dissertations
Navigation through an indoor environment is a formidable challenge for an autonomous micro air vehicle. One solution is a vision aided inertial navigation system using depth-from-defocus to determine heading and depth to features in the scene. Depth-from-defocus uses a focal blur pattern to estimate depth. As depth increases, the observable change in the focal blur is generally reduced. Consequently, as the depth of a feature to be measured increases, the measurement performance decreases. The Fresnel zone plate, used as an aperture, introduces multiple focal planes. Interference between the multiple focal planes produce changes in the aperture that extend the depth …
Coupling Vanishing Point Tracking With Inertial Navigation To Estimate Attitude In A Structured Environment, Dayvid Prahl
Coupling Vanishing Point Tracking With Inertial Navigation To Estimate Attitude In A Structured Environment, Dayvid Prahl
Theses and Dissertations
This research aims to obtain accurate and stable estimates of a vehicle's attitude by coupling consumer-grade inertial and optical sensors. This goal is pursued by first modeling both inertial and optical sensors and then developing a technique for identifying vanishing points in perspective images of a structured environment. The inertial and optical processes are then coupled to enable each one to aid the other. The vanishing point measurements are combined with the inertial data in an extended Kalman filter to produce overall attitude estimates. This technique is experimentally demonstrated in an indoor corridor setting using a motion profile designed to …
Effects Of Cyclic Prefix Jamming Versus Noise Jamming In Ofdm Signals, Amber L. Scott
Effects Of Cyclic Prefix Jamming Versus Noise Jamming In Ofdm Signals, Amber L. Scott
Theses and Dissertations
Signal jamming of an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signal is simulated in MATLAB. Two different means of jamming are used to see, which is a more efficient way to disrupt a signal using the same signal power. The first way is a basic additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) jammer that equally jams the entire signal. The second way is an AWGN jammer that targets only the cyclic prefix (CP) of the signal. These two methods of jamming are simulated using different channel models and unknowns to get varying results. The three channel models used in the simulations are the no …
Multiple Integrated Navigation Sensors For Improving Occupancy Grid Fastslam, Christopher P. Weyers
Multiple Integrated Navigation Sensors For Improving Occupancy Grid Fastslam, Christopher P. Weyers
Theses and Dissertations
An autonomous vehicle must accurately observe its location within the environment to interact with objects and accomplish its mission. When its environment is unknown, the vehicle must construct a map detailing its surroundings while using it to maintain an accurate location. Such a vehicle is faced with the circularly defined Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) problem. However difficult, SLAM is a critical component of autonomous vehicle exploration with applications to search and rescue. To current knowledge, this research presents the first SLAM solution to integrate stereo cameras, inertial measurements, and vehicle odometry into a Multiple Integrated Navigation Sensor (MINS) path. …
Kernelized Locality-Sensitive Hashing For Fast Image Landmark Association, Mark A. Weems
Kernelized Locality-Sensitive Hashing For Fast Image Landmark Association, Mark A. Weems
Theses and Dissertations
As the concept of war has evolved, navigation in urban environments where GPS may be degraded is increasingly becoming more important. Two existing solutions are vision-aided navigation and vision-based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). The problem, however, is that vision-based navigation techniques can require excessive amounts of memory and increased computational complexity resulting in a decrease in speed. This research focuses on techniques to improve such issues by speeding up and optimizing the data association process in vision-based SLAM. Specifically, this work studies the current methods that algorithms use to associate a current robot pose to that of one previously …
Signals Of Opportunity Navigation Using Wi-Fi Signals, Wilfred E. Noel
Signals Of Opportunity Navigation Using Wi-Fi Signals, Wilfred E. Noel
Theses and Dissertations
Since GPS is generally limited to areas with clear sky view, additional methods of navigation are currently being explored. This thesis explores navigation using Signals of Opportunity(SoOP). The signals chosen for evaluation in this thesis are the common Internet IEEE 802.11a/g signals, or Wi-Fi. This thesis presents SoOP navigation based on cross-correlations of received data from multiple Wi-Fi stations. It shows the effectiveness of the methods using collected Wi-Fi signals in a real-world environment. By using simple statistical representations of collected data in large groups, or windows, cross-correlation calculations can produce timing offsets between simulated stations. The timing offsets, or …

Image Dependent Relative Formation Navigation For Autonomous Aerial Refueling, James M. Howard
Theses and Dissertations
This research tests the feasibility, accuracy, and reliability of a predictive rendering and holistic comparison algorithm with use of an optical sensor to provide relative distance and position behind a lead or tanker aircraft. Using an accurate model of a tanker, an algorithm renders image(s) for comparison with actual collected images by a camera installed on the receiver aircraft. Based on this comparison, information used to create the rendered image(s) is used to provide the relative navigation solution required for autonomous air refueling. Given enough predicted images and processing time, this approach should reliably find an accurate solution. Building on …
Navigation With Limited Prior Information Using Time Difference Of Arrival Measurements From Signals Of Opportunity, Christopher M. Rondeau
Navigation With Limited Prior Information Using Time Difference Of Arrival Measurements From Signals Of Opportunity, Christopher M. Rondeau
Theses and Dissertations
The Global Positioning System (GPS) provides world-wide availability to high-accuracy navigation and positioning information. However, the threats to GPS are increasing, and many limitations of GPS are being encountered. Simultaneously, systems previously considered as viable backups or supplements to GPS are being shut down. This creates the need for system alternatives. Navigation using signals of opportunity (SoOP) exploits any signal that is available in a given area, regardless of whether or not the original intent of the signal was for navigation. Common techniques to compute a position estimate using SoOP include received signal strength, angle of arrival, time of arrival, …
Orbital Tori Construction Using Trajectory Following Spectral Methods, Ralph E. Bordner Iii
Orbital Tori Construction Using Trajectory Following Spectral Methods, Ralph E. Bordner Iii
Theses and Dissertations
By assuming the motion of a satellite about the earth’s geopotential mimics the known Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) solution of a lightly perturbed integrable Hamiltonian system, this research focused on applying trajectory following spectral methods to estimate orbital tori from sampled orbital data. From an estimated basis frequency set, orbital data was decomposed into multi-periodic Fourier series, essentially compressing ephemerides for long-term use. Real-world Global Positioning System (GPS) orbital tracks were decomposed and reconstructed with error from as low as few kilometers per coordinate axis over a 10-week span to tens of kilometers per coordinate axis over the same time period, depending …
An Integrity Framework For Image-Based Navigation Systems, Craig D. Larson
An Integrity Framework For Image-Based Navigation Systems, Craig D. Larson
Theses and Dissertations
This work first examines fundamental differences between measurement models established for GPS and those of proposed image-based navigation systems. In contrast to single value per satellite GPS pseudorange measurements, image measurements are inherently angle-based and represent pixel coordinate pairs for each mapped target. Thus, in the image-based case, special consideration must be given to the units of the transformations between the states and measurements, and also to the fact that multiple rows of the observation matrix relate to particular error states. An algorithm is developed to instantiate a framework for image-based integrity analogous to that of GPS RAIM. The algorithm …

The United States’ GPS, the European Union’s Galileo, China’s Compass, and Russia’s GLONASS systems are all developing or modernizing their signals, and there will soon be more navigation satellites in space than ever before. The goal of this research was to develop an initial capability for an AFIT GNSS software receiver. This software receiver is intended to be used for research purposes at the Advanced Navigation Technology (ANT) Center. First a GPS-only software receiver was built. It successfully acquired, tracked, and provided reasonable position estimates. Next, the receiver was successfully modified to acquire and …
Monocular Vision Localization Using A Gimbaled Laser Range Sensor, Don J. Yates
Monocular Vision Localization Using A Gimbaled Laser Range Sensor, Don J. Yates
Theses and Dissertations
There have been great advances in recent years in the area of indoor navigation. Many of these new navigation systems rely on digital images to aid an inertial navigation estimates. The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) has been conducting research in this area for a number of years. The image-aiding techniques are centered around tracking stationary features in order to improve inertial navigation estimates. Previous research has used stereo vision systems or terrain constraints with monocular systems to estimate feature locations. While these methods have shown good results, they do have drawbacks. First, as unmanned exploration vehicles become smaller …
Aiding Gps With Additional Satellite Navigation Services, Yasin A. Mutlu
Aiding Gps With Additional Satellite Navigation Services, Yasin A. Mutlu
Theses and Dissertations
In modern warfare navigation services are very important. GPS is currently providing service for accurate navigation, except in some areas, especially urban areas, where GPS signals cannot always be tracked by users. In these cases some additional navigation support could be provided by other global navigation satellite systems. If GPS is combined with other navigation systems than the navigation gap will be minor. In this thesis, the effect of combining GPS with other satellite navigation systems, specifically GLONASS, Galileo and Compass, is evaluated in terms of availability and position dilution of precision (PDOP) values. First, satellite constellations are simulated in …
Gravity Gradiometry And Map Matching: An Aid To Aircraft Inertial Navigation Systems, Anthony J. Degregoria
Gravity Gradiometry And Map Matching: An Aid To Aircraft Inertial Navigation Systems, Anthony J. Degregoria
Theses and Dissertations
Inertial navigation systems (INS) offer passive, all-weather, and undeniable navigation information, which military customers often view as especially appealing strengths. Unfortunately, Airmen and engineers still struggle with INS’s drifting position errors, and navigation aids generally detract from INS’s strengths. At this year’s Air, Space, and Cyberspace in the 21st Century Conference, the Chief of Staff of the Air Force identified the Global Positioning System (GPS) as a widely-known and exploitable vulnerability, saying that it’s critical the Joint force reduce GPS dependence. Recent advances provide an opportunity for gravity gradient instruments (GGI), which measure spatial derivatives of the gravity vector, to …

The system made from carbon fiber reinforced polymers is designed around a 10 GHz radar frequency in the X-band range and uses a WR-90 waveguide as a baseline for design. The system is designed for integration into fuselage or wing sections of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft and would increase the system performance through the availability of increased area and decreased system weight. Elemental parts of the SWASS structure were …
Attitude Control Of A Satellite Simulator Using Reaction Wheels And A Pid Controller, Ryan E. Snider
Attitude Control Of A Satellite Simulator Using Reaction Wheels And A Pid Controller, Ryan E. Snider
Theses and Dissertations
Attitude requirements of a satellite are determined by its mission: telecommunications, optical imagery, and meteorology to name a few. A satellite's ability to orient its mission critical hardware (solar arrays, attitude sensors, etc.), as well as its mission specific payload, is incumbent upon the performance of the satellite's attitude control system (ACS). For a highly accurate ACS and for moderately fast maneuverability, reaction wheels are preferred because they allow continuous and smooth control while inducing the smallest possible disturbance torques. The objective of this research is to design, build, test, and evaluate the performance of a reaction wheel ACS on-board …
Estimating Characteristics Of A Maneuvering Reentry Vehicle Observed By Multiple Sensors, Evan M. Brooks
Estimating Characteristics Of A Maneuvering Reentry Vehicle Observed By Multiple Sensors, Evan M. Brooks
Theses and Dissertations
Post flight analysis of ballistic missile reentry vehicles is an area of focus for the U.S. Government, especially for those involved in ballistic missile defense. Typically, this analysis incorporates either a model-driven least squares filter or a data-following Kalman filter. The research performed here developed a filter that attempts to integrate the strengths of both filters. A least squares filter operates on observation data collected during exoatmospheric free flight and a Kalman filter is used to analyze data collected lower in the atmosphere, where potential maneuvers could be performed. Additionally, the filter was written to incorporate data from multiple sensors. …
Prototype Development And Dynamic Characterization Of Deployable Cubesat Booms, Grant M. Thomas
Prototype Development And Dynamic Characterization Of Deployable Cubesat Booms, Grant M. Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
The current barrier to CubeSat proliferation is their lack of utility depth. These small satellites are exceptionally well suited for specific space missions such as space weather observation and other scientific data gathering exploits; however, they are not suited for every mission. The 10cm-cube form factor that gives the CubeSat its unique advantage is also its greatest hindrance. A potential bridge over this gap is the successful integration of deployable booms onto the CubeSat structure. With this research, the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) explored the parameters of deployable tapespring booms using the triangular retractable and collapsible (TRAC) cross- …
