A Methodology To Assess The Impact Of The Global Positioning System On Air Combat Outcomes, Stephen F. Sovaiko
A Methodology To Assess The Impact Of The Global Positioning System On Air Combat Outcomes, Stephen F. Sovaiko
Theses and Dissertations
The Air Force has a requirement to quantify the force enhancement effects of military space systems, but no methodology currently exists for the measurement of their contribution to air combat outcome. This research examines the Global Positioning System GPS and models its influence on air-to-ground combat. The decision analysis technique of influence diagrams is used to identify the effects of GPS launch decisions and constellation size on the navigation accuracy available to air combatants. The effect of accuracy variations on combat outcome is shown by using a value tree to identify the affected campaign Measures of Effectiveness. The study reveals …
Incorporation Of Carrier Phase Global Positioning System Measurements Into The Navigation Reference System For Improved Performance, Neil P. Hansen
Incorporation Of Carrier Phase Global Positioning System Measurements Into The Navigation Reference System For Improved Performance, Neil P. Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
In order to quantify the performance and accuracy of existing navigation systems, the U.S. Air Force has been using the Completely Integrated Reference Instrumentation System (CIRIS) as a baseline. CIRIS combines information from an inertial navigation unit, a barometric altimeter, and a range/range-rate system of ground transponders to obtain a navigation solution. This research explores the possibilities of enhancing CIRIS by adding measurements obtained from the Global Position System (GPS). Pure pseudorange measurement updates to the CIRIS Extended Kalman Filter form the basis of the Navigation Reference System (NRS). Applying differential corrections to the pseudorange measurements forms the basis of …
Development Of An Air-To-Air Refueling Automatic Flight Control System Using Quantitative Feedback Theory, Dennis W. Trosen
Development Of An Air-To-Air Refueling Automatic Flight Control System Using Quantitative Feedback Theory, Dennis W. Trosen
Theses and Dissertations
Quantitative Feedback Theory and the improved method Quantitative Feedback Theory are enhanced to include the rejection of disturbance at the system output. The enhanced Quantitative Feedback Theory and improved method Quantitative Feedback Theory processes are applied to the design of an automatic flight control system to regulate position of the C-135B fuel receiving aircraft relative to the tanker during air-to-air refueling. A simple feedback control system is developed that will achieve stable position regulation. State-space aircraft models &re generated. An inner loop autopilot is designed to reduce the plant cutoff frequency and provide the system inputs for the Quantitative Feedback …
Development Of High Angle Of Attack Control Laws For An Unstable, Non- Minimum Phase Aircraft Using Variations Of The Quantitative Feedback Technique, Mark A. Mcclure
Development Of High Angle Of Attack Control Laws For An Unstable, Non- Minimum Phase Aircraft Using Variations Of The Quantitative Feedback Technique, Mark A. Mcclure
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis discusses the application of variations of the quantitative feedback technique to a control problem with unstable, non-minimum phase plants. The X-29A research aircraft is used as the basis for developing a set of representative linearized aircraft dynamics models, which are modified to allow for the use of differential canard control inputs for enhanced maneuverability at extreme angles of attack. A specialized design approach is presented to develop frequency dependent weighting matrices, and the shortcomings of traditional methods are discussed. Four independent longitudinal compensators are developed by first designing loop transmission functions. Discussion is provided that addresses the limitations …
Model Identification And Control System Design For The Lambda Unmanned Research Vehicle, Gerald A. Swift
Model Identification And Control System Design For The Lambda Unmanned Research Vehicle, Gerald A. Swift
Theses and Dissertations
Research for this thesis centered on the Lambda Unmanned Research Vehicle (URV), an asset of the Flight Dynamics Directorate, Wright Laboratory Patterson AFB. The following tasks were accomplished: (1) a linear, state-space, small perturbation model was developed for both the longitudinal and lateral directional dynamics of the vehicles, and (2) pitch rate roll rate, and yaw rate flight controllers were designed using classical and multivariable feedback methods. The parameters of the linear, state space, small perturbation model were estimated from actual flight test data. Digital Datcom was first used to estimate stability and control derivatives from the vehicle's geometry. Maximum …
Development Of A Personal Computer Simulation Program Of The Ln-94 Inertial Navigation System, Thomas E. Flynn
Development Of A Personal Computer Simulation Program Of The Ln-94 Inertial Navigation System, Thomas E. Flynn
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis develops a simulation that emulates a Litton LN-94 INS. Real time simulation is achieved for a stationary navigation case and a straight-and-level flight trajectory are provided to exercise the simulation dynamics. The user interface is simple and requires little previous knowledge to operate. The communication link with the MILSTD 1553B bus provide a realistic environment in which to collect and analyze data. The simulation is processed on an 80386 IBM compatible personal computer. A 23-state INS error model is implemented and integration is performed by a fifth-order Kutta-Merson routine. The simulation is interfaced to a plotting routine and …
A Navigation Reference System (Nrs) Using Global Positioning System (Gps) Aiding, Richard D. Stacey
A Navigation Reference System (Nrs) Using Global Positioning System (Gps) Aiding, Richard D. Stacey
Theses and Dissertations
To quantify the performance abilities of existing or proposed navigation systems, the U.S. Air Force has for the last several years compared the performance of the system under test to the performance of a baseline navigation system known as the Completely Integrated Reference Instrumentation System (CIRIS). CIRIS obtains a highly accurate navigation solution by combining the output from three major subsystems: inertial navigation system (INS) information, barometric altitude information, and range and range-rate data from ground transponders which have been precisely surveyed. Although the navigation solution produced by CIRIS is highly accurate, it will soon be inadequate as the standard …
Robustness Of H2 And H∞ Design Techniques In The Design Of A Guided Missile Controller, Steven R. Kolbow
Robustness Of H2 And H∞ Design Techniques In The Design Of A Guided Missile Controller, Steven R. Kolbow
Theses and Dissertations
This work follows Capt. R.L. Riddle's 1989 thesis (ADA216147) which compared conventional, H2 and H∞ controlled guided missiles in simulated flyouts against an airborne target. The simulation results did not clearly demonstrate the H2 and H∞ controller advantages. In this study the missile model and simulation were refined. In addition to simulation runs, performance, noise attenuation, and μ (structural singular value) robustness analyses were conducted. Results showed areas where improvement was needed in the H2 and H∞ controllers used in the study. An H2 and H∞ controller redesign is recommended using the …
H2 And H∞ Optimization With A Restricted Region Of Stability, Michael J. Mares
H2 And H∞ Optimization With A Restricted Region Of Stability, Michael J. Mares
Theses and Dissertations
Many modern control design methods, such as H2 and H∞ optimization, guarantee that the closed-loop system will be stable. To make further use of this guarantee, the portion of the s-plane considered to be stable is restricted to a region left of a vertical line some distance alpha from the imaginary axis. This alpha shift was accomplished in the state space equations, so standard computational tools still work. now the system is not only guaranteed to be stable, but also has some guaranteed speed for the time response. The equations for guaranteeing some arbitrary damping ratio were also …
Dynamic Analysis Of A Combat Aircraft With Control Surface Failure, Marc Roy
Dynamic Analysis Of A Combat Aircraft With Control Surface Failure, Marc Roy
Theses and Dissertations
An investigation was performed to analyze the dynamic stability characteristic of an aircraft which has sustained damage to a primary control surface. The analysis was performed using the existing functional form of actual wind tunnel data taken on an F-16 model. Two control schemes are used for trimming an F-16 that has sustained damage to its rudder. The first control scheme represent the basic aircraft, while the second allowed the horizontal tail ailerons to move independently from the flaperons. The investigation was conducted for one flight condition representative of the aircraft at cruise speed. Region in α/β (angle of attack)/(sideslip …
