Enzymatic Production Of Cyclodextrin Using Cyclodextrin Glycosyltransferase Immobilized In Metal Organic Frameworks (Mofs), Babatunde Azeez Ogunbadejo
Dissertations
Cyclodextrins (CDs) and their derivatives have attracted significant attention in the pharmaceutical, food, and textile industries, which has led to an increased demand for their production. CDs are typically produced by the action of cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase) on starch. Owing to the relatively high cost of enzymes, the economic feasibility of the entire process strongly depends on the effective retention and recycling of CGTase in the reaction system, while maintaining the enzyme’s activity and stability. Previous supports used for this purpose such as silica and hydrogels, have numerous drawbacks, including enzyme leaching, activity loss and significant mass transfer limitations. The …

First-Principles Calculations Of Lattice Thermal Conductivity In Tl,3Vse4: Uncertainties From Different Approaches Of Force Constants, Zhi Li, Yi Xia, Chris Wolverton
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Accurate and reliable first-principles simulations of lattice thermal conductivity (κL) of highly anharmonic crystals have long been challenging in condensed matter and materials physics. With recent theoretical advances, the calculation of κL has evolved into a sophisticated process requiring the consideration of higher levels of refinements, such as high-order phonon-phonon scattering, anharmonic phonon renormalization, and heat transport beyond the phonon gas picture. Interatomic force constants (IFCs), however, as a shared pillar of the above concepts, are sometimes ambiguously implemented in this process, resulting in non-negligible uncertainties among different studies. Here, we revisit the ultralow κL of Tl3VSe4 and make a …

Inertial Particle Clustering Due To Turbulence In An Air Jet, Bianca Viggiano, Kris Gish, Stephen Solovitz, Raul Bayoan Cal
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Explosive volcanic eruptions create turbulent plumes of fine ash particles. When these particles collide in the presence of moisture and electrostatic fields they combine into larger aggregates, which can significantly change the atmospheric residence time of the airborne cloud. Previous studies have suggested that turbulence may lead to preferential concentration—also known as clustering—of particles within the flow, increasing the likelihood of collisions and aggregation. Few experimental studies have quantified these processes for volcanic plumes. This behavior was investigated using a particle-laden air jet. By systematically varying the exit speed and the size, density, and concentration of particles, flows were produced …

Toward Electrical Impedance Sensing Surgical Drill For Tissue Boundary Detection, Harshavardhan Devaraj
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Dental implantation is an increasingly common procedure used to treat missing teeth. However, surgical drilling to place the implant poses a high risk of injury to critical anatomy, such as inferior alveolar nerve injury or maxillary sinus perforation. A real-time surgical feedback system sensing proximity of these critical anatomy could reduce injury risks. This dissertation investigates the development of such a system that incorporates an electrical impedance sensor into the tip of a surgical drill.
A simulation framework based on finite element method (FEM) was developed to optimize the sensor as it approached a high impedance boundary. The accuracy of …

Polymers functionalized with inorganic silane groups have been used in wide-ranging applications due to the silane reactivity, which enables formation of covalently-crosslinked polymeric structures. Utilizing stimuli-responsive polymers in these hybrid systems can lead to smart and tunable behavior for sensing, drug delivery, and optical coatings. Previously, the thermoresponsive polymer poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) functionalized with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TMA) has demonstrated unique aqueous self-assembly and optical responses following temperature elevation. Here, we investigate how cosolvent addition, particularly ethanol and N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF), impacts these transition temperatures, optical clouding, and structure formation in NIPAM/TMA copolymers. Versus purely aqueous …

Purpose: The lamina cribrosa (LC) depends on the sclera for support. The support must be provided through the LC insertions. Although a continuous insertion over the whole LC periphery is often assumed, LC insertions are actually discrete locations where LC collagenous beams meet the sclera. We hypothesized that LC insertions vary in number, size, and shape by quadrant and depth.
Methods: Coronal cryosections through the full LCs from six healthy monkey eyes were imaged using instant polarized light microscopy. The images were registered into a stack, on which we manually marked LC insertion outlines, nothing their position in-depth and quadrant …

Adaptive Control Of An Aeroelastic System For Active Flutter Suppression And Disturbance Rejection, Patrick Sterling Downs
Adaptive Control Of An Aeroelastic System For Active Flutter Suppression And Disturbance Rejection, Patrick Sterling Downs
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The future of aircraft design strives for lighter weight, more aerodynamically efficient structures. These improvements may come with the drawback of increased structural flexibility and elevated aeroelastic effects, often resulting in a lower flutter speed. This motivates the implementation of advanced control methods to control aeroelastic systems over a range of flight conditions, suppress and delay the onset of flutter, and compensate for disturbances, actuator dynamics, and unmodeled nonlinear dynamics.
This dissertation first develops a novel method for constructing time-domain simulation models of two and three-dimensional aeroelastic systems, resulting in models that are suitable for the implementation of state-space control …
Adaptive Control For A Class Of Nonlinear, Time Varying Rotational Systems, John Zelina
Adaptive Control For A Class Of Nonlinear, Time Varying Rotational Systems, John Zelina
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Aerospace systems often exhibit nonlinear, time varying dynamics. Expansive mission profiles, fuel burn or transfer and payload deployments or slung loads can supply additional complexity that can excite the plant dynamics and result in undesirable performance. Because of these often unknown dynamical effects in aerospace systems, an emphasis is placed on controller robustness as significant safety risks are present. Due to the difficulty of predicting uncertainties, robust control can be achieved in two distinct ways. The first approach is to design a control law to be tolerant to a large amount of uncertainty, and the second is to design a …

Influence Of Side Dilution Jets On Swirling And Non-Swirling Pulverised Biomass Turbulent Annular Flows, Syed E. Gillani, Yasir M. Al-Abdeli, Zhao F. Tian
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The use of pulverised biomass in non-premixed combustion systems, featuring turbulent annular flows (swirling, non-swirling) with downstream air dilution jets, is of immense practical importance. The overall combustion performance and emissions heavily rely on the underlying flow dynamics, turbulence and dispersion behaviour of the pulverised biomass particles. Despite the practical significance of side dilution jets in aiding complete combustion and controlling pollutants, the fundamental understanding of side dilution jets influence on the biomass particle velocity field, turbulence, and dispersion characteristics is still lacking. However, the presence of a multi-phase (solid-gas) flow field, highly turbulent annular flows, swirl, and cross-wise turbulent …
