Antibiotic resistance in the environment poses significant risks to human health, especially through the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) via pathways like food and water. Urban stormwater runoff has been identified as a significant contributor to the release and transport of ARGs in the environment but has remained under-researched. This dissertation aimed to address this gap by investigating the fate of ARGs in urban stormwater runoff to guide future stormwater management decisions. The development of biodegradable active packaging films with hydrophobic characteristics is vital for extending the shelf life of food and reducing the reliance on petroleum-based plastics. In this study, novel hydrophobic cerium-based metal-organic framework (Ce-MOF) nanoparticles were successfully synthesized. The Ce-MOF nanoparticles were then incorporated into the cassava starch matrix at varying concentrations (0.5 %, 1.5 %, 3 %, and 4 % w/w of total solid) to fabricate cassava-based active packaging films via the solution casting technique. The influence of Ce-MOF on the morphology, thermal attributes, and physicochemical properties of the cassava film was subsequently determined through further analyses. Biomedical …

Widespread contamination by heavy metals (HMs) and dyes poses a major health risk to people and ecosystems requiring effective treatment. In this work, rice husk (RH) and shrimp shells were extracted to obtain amorphous silica and chitosan, respectively, which were utilized to produce nano-chitosan-coated silica (NCCS). To ensure the stability of the nanoparticles, silica was freeze-dried after being coated with nano-chitosan. A prototype of an automatic braking system for a locomotive was designed and implemented for the purpose of adding an emergency fail safe for trains nationwide. An ultrasonic sensor detected environmental conditions in front of the train, while a connected relay communicated with a servo powered brake to change brake position. Long-duration energy storage (LDES) is critical to a stable, resilient, and decarbonized electric grid. While batteries are emerging as important LDES devices, extended, high-power discharges necessary for cost-competitive LDES present new materials challenges. Focusing on a new generation of low-temperature molten sodium batteries, we explore here unique phenomena related to long-duration discharge through a well-known solid electrolyte, NaSICON. Specifically, molten sodium symmetric cells at 110 ° C were cycled at 0.1 A cm−2 for 1–23 h discharges. Longer discharges led to unstable overpotentials, reduced resistances, and decreased electrolyte strength, caused by massive sodium penetration not observed in shorter duration discharges. …

This thesis is dedicated to a detailed study of changes in the properties of Gelatin-Elastin-Hyaluronate (GEH) tissue engineering scaffold resulting from changes in preparation parameters. More specifically, utilizing a combination of foaming and freeze-drying techniques, this research investigates the effects of different parameters, including agitation speed, duration time, and chilling temperature on the scaffold’s structural integrity, porosity, and mechanical properties. In this study, a 3D steady-state Eulerian-Eulerian simulation was developed to investigate flow performance in a dilute pneumatic conveying system. The investigation focused on two main objectives: (1) assessing the influence of bin selection on solution accuracy for representing the polydisperse mixture, and (2) exploring methods to simplify the modeling of polydisperse particles in the simulation by utilizing a mean diameter derived from the mixture’s particle size distribution. The seismogenic characteristics of the Gulf of Aqaba zone have been assessed using the maximum likelihood method to estimate various earthquake recurrence parameters. These parameters encompass the β-value, annual recurrence rate (λ), and maximum probable magnitude (Mmax). This assessment has identified three sub-seismogenic zones, each corresponding to specific structural faults within the Gulf. These zones are associated with the Aragonese, Arnona and Aqaba faults, delineating pull-apart basin structures in the Gulf of Aqaba. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is a minimally invasive approach in treating head and neck cancers and has demonstrated improved surgical outcomes with reduced morbidity when compared to traditional open surgery. However, the lack of haptic feedback makes it more difficult to assess the tumor extent and locate critical structures (e.g., artery and nerves). In standard-of-care TORS, preoperative imaging is used as guidance; however, it becomes inaccurate intraoperatively: the patient’s neck is hyper-extended, surgical instruments are introduced, and soft tissues deform significantly. This study uses the Random Forest algorithm to measure and predict the Air Pollution Standard Index (APSI) at Blimbing Banyuwangi Airport. Air pollution data, including concentrations of O3, CO, NO2, SO2, PM2.5, and PM10, were collected from air monitoring stations at the airport from April 15-30, 2024. APSI measurement followed established formulas by relevant authorities. Data analysis utilized statistical approaches and computational algorithms. The findings reveal that air quality at the airport is generally "Moderate," with occasional "Good" days. The Random Forest algorithm effectively predicts APSI based on existing pollution data. This work presents nonparametric identification of a Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) beam subjected to a non-classical nonlinear electrostatic (levitation) force. The approach is based on the Restoring Force Surface method and the Chebyshev polynomials. The study examines the main challenges associated with the used approach as applied to small-scale systems, such as the inability to measure the restoring force and acceleration. In this work, we use a mix of analytical techniques, experimental data, and Lagrange polynomial interpolation to estimate the restoring forces of the system and its nonlinearities. Such a process should ideally not only mitigate associated environmental burdens but also recycle and recover value-added products. Enzymatic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO2) to formate by formate dehydrogenase (FDH) is a promising technology for reducing CO2 concentrations in an environmentally friendly manner. For practical and economical implementation of the process, however, enhanced reusability of the enzyme is essential, which requires easy separation from the reaction mixture, coupled with sustained stability. Much of the research in the analysis of Temperature polarisation (TP) and the productivity of a membrane distillation (MD) system tends to concentrate on operational conditions. However, substantial enhancements in permeate flux can be realised through the incorporation of fundamental design modifications. This research showed that TP can be successfully mitigated almost to a level of non-existence, by manipulating the module orientation and flow channel height of an in-house designed direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) system.
