Online Neuro-Adaptive Learning For Power System Dynamic State Estimation, Rahul Birari
Online Neuro-Adaptive Learning For Power System Dynamic State Estimation, Rahul Birari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the increased penetration of renewable generation in the smart grid , it is crucial to have knowledge of rapid changes of system states. The information of real-time electro-mechanical dynamic states of generators are essential to ensuring reliability and detecting instability of the grid. The conventional SCADA based Dynamic State Estimation (DSE) was limited by the slow sampling rates (2-4 Hz). With the advent of PMU based synchro-phasor technology in tandem with Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS), it has become possible to avail rapid real-time measurements at the network nodes. These measurements can be exploited for better estimates of system …
Energy-Aware Data Movement In Non-Volatile Memory Hierarchies, Navid Khoshavi Najafabadi
Energy-Aware Data Movement In Non-Volatile Memory Hierarchies, Navid Khoshavi Najafabadi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While technology scaling enables increased density for memory cells, the intrinsic high leakage power of conventional CMOS technology and the demand for reduced energy consumption inspires the use of emerging technology alternatives such as eDRAM and Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) including STT-MRAM, PCM, and RRAM. The utilization of emerging technology in Last Level Cache (LLC) designs which occupies a signifcant fraction of total die area in Chip Multi Processors (CMPs) introduces new dimensions of vulnerability, energy consumption, and performance delivery. To be specific, a part of this research focuses on eDRAM Bit Upset Vulnerability Factor (BUVF) to assess vulnerable portion of …
Modeling Of Flow Generated Sound In A Constricted Duct At Low Mach Number Flow, Peshala Thibbotuwawa Gamage
Modeling Of Flow Generated Sound In A Constricted Duct At Low Mach Number Flow, Peshala Thibbotuwawa Gamage
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Modelling flow and acoustics in a constricted duct at low Mach numbers is important for investigating many physiological phenomena such as phonation, generation of arterial murmurs, and pulmonary conditions involving airway obstruction. The objective of this study is to validate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational aero-acoustics (CAA) simulations in a constricted tube at low Mach numbers. Different turbulence models were employed to simulate the flow field. Models included Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS), Detached eddy simulation (DES) and Large eddy simulation (LES). The models were validated by comparing study results with laser doppler anemometry (LDA) velocity measurements. The comparison showed …
Multi-Axial Thermomechanical Characterization Of Shape Memory Alloys For Improved Stability, Douglas Nicholson
Multi-Axial Thermomechanical Characterization Of Shape Memory Alloys For Improved Stability, Douglas Nicholson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Shape recovery in shape memory alloys (SMAs) occurs against external stress by means of a reversible thermoelastic solid state phase transformation typically between so-called austenite, martensite and R-phases. The ability to do work enables their use as high-force actuators in automotive and aerospace applications while superelastic NiTi is of interest in biomedical devices such as stents. Both R-phase and martensite can detwin, reorient and undergo a thermal or stress induced transformation. For these reasons, it is difficult from ordinary macroscopic measurements to decouple elastic and inelastic contributions (from their respective phases) from the overall deformation. In situ neutron diffraction is …
Development And Implementation Of Star Tracker Based Attitude Determination, Casey Grant Smith
Development And Implementation Of Star Tracker Based Attitude Determination, Casey Grant Smith
Masters Theses
"As interest in nanosatellites grows within the university community, the demand for inexpensive, space-grade hardware grows as well. Star trackers can be a luxury item for some spacecraft and therefore are often not considered due to their cost. Ideally, a star tracker could be built using inexpensive parts so long as the software is available. Unlike many other attitude determination instruments, star trackers are renowned for their high accuracy, yielding accurate and precise attitude estimates. However, development of this software can be overwhelming for the university settling, especially when multiple missions are on hand. If these instruments were readily available …
Novel Approaches For Efficient Stochastic Computing, Ramu Seva
Novel Approaches For Efficient Stochastic Computing, Ramu Seva
Masters Theses
"This thesis is comprised of two papers, where the first paper presents a novel approach for parallel implementation of SC using FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array). This paper makes use of the distributed memory elements of FPGAs (i.e., look-up-tables -LUTs) to achieve this. An attempt has been made to build the stochastic number generators (SNGs) by using the proposed LUT approach. The construction of these SNGs has been influenced by the Quasi-random number sequences, which provide the advantage of reducing the random fluctuations present in the pseudo-random number generators such as LFSR (Linear Feedback Shift Register) as well as the …
The Effects Of Carboxylic Acids In Aluminum Anodizing, Abby E. Koczera
The Effects Of Carboxylic Acids In Aluminum Anodizing, Abby E. Koczera
Honors Theses and Capstones
Hard-anodized alumina coatings were formed in sulfuric acid at low temperature and high current density in the presence of carboxylic acid additives. Citric acid, trimesic acid, mellitic acid and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) were utilized in varying concentrations. The additives were chosen for their capacity to form complexes with tri-valent aluminum and hence impart chemical stability to the coatings. The coatings were sealed in boiling water, and corrosion resistance was observed in a high pH solution of potassium hydroxide. The coatings were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to assess coating thickness and pore dimensions. Thicker coatings were produced when the …

Steel Pin And Hanger Assembly Replacement Options, Daniel Linzell, Chandana C. Balakrishna
Steel Pin And Hanger Assembly Replacement Options, Daniel Linzell, Chandana C. Balakrishna
Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports
A number of steel beam bridges exist in the United States that contain pin and hanger assemblies. Pin and hanger assemblies are fracture critical members whose failure would result in collapse of the bridge or render it unable to perform its expected functions. As these bridges continue to age, many assemblies have deteriorated to a point where retrofit or replacement has to be considered and performed to maintain intended safety and performance. States have taken various approaches to address the pin and hanger assembly retrofit and replacement options. However, there is no single report that summarizes these approaches. This report …

Study On The Methods For Predicting The Performance Of A Hybrid Solar-Assisted Ground-Source Heat Pump System, Zhaoyi Zhuang, Qiqi Zhu, Jian Song, Xin Zhang, Haorong Li
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
It is critical to find suitable setting parameters for designing a hybrid solar-assisted ground-source heat pump system in the practical engineering application, but the heat pump performance is unpredictable after many years of operation. This paper used 2000 sets of performance data collected from solar-assisted GSHP systems that keep operating over 20 years to simulate long term used heat pump with a professional software called GeoStar. Adopted the classification and regression tree (CART) method, the design of solar energy collector areas can be predicted. The multi-linear regression is also utilized to predict average monthly per meter borehole heat exchange. Seasonal …

Contributions To Edge Computing, Vernon K. Bumgardner
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Efforts related to Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Machine to Machine (M2M) technologies, Industrial Internet, and Smart Cities aim to improve society through the coordination of distributed devices and analysis of resulting data. By the year 2020 there will be an estimated 50 billion network connected devices globally and 43 trillion gigabytes of electronic data. Current practices of moving data directly from end-devices to remote and potentially distant cloud computing services will not be sufficient to manage future device and data growth.
Edge Computing is the migration of computational functionality to sources of data generation. The importance of …
Mammogram And Tomosynthesis Classification Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Xiaofei Zhang
Mammogram And Tomosynthesis Classification Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Xiaofei Zhang
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Mammography is the most widely used method of screening for breast cancer. Traditional mammography produces two-dimensional X-ray images, while advanced tomosynthesis mammography produces reconstructed three-dimensional images. Due to high variability in tumor size and shape, and the low signal-to-noise ratio inherent to mammography, manual classification yields a significant number of false positives, thereby contributing to an unnecessarily large number of biopsies performed to reduce the risk of misdiagnosis. Achieving high diagnostic accuracy requires expertise acquired over many years of experience as a radiologist.
The convolutional neural network (CNN) is a popular deep-learning construct used in image classification. The convolutional process …
Modeling Faceted Browsing With Category Theory For Reuse And Interoperability, Daniel R. Harris
Modeling Faceted Browsing With Category Theory For Reuse And Interoperability, Daniel R. Harris
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Faceted browsing (also called faceted search or faceted navigation) is an exploratory search model where facets assist in the interactive navigation of search results. Facets are attributes that have been assigned to describe resources being explored; a faceted taxonomy is a collection of facets provided by the interface and is often organized as sets, hierarchies, or graphs. Faceted browsing has become ubiquitous with modern digital libraries and online search engines, yet the process is still difficult to abstractly model in a manner that supports the development of interoperable and reusable interfaces. We propose category theory as a theoretical foundation for …
Computational All Atom Energy Density Landscape Mappings Of Intra-Protein Interactions From Static And Dynamic Ensemble Structure Data, Oscar H. Bastidas
Computational All Atom Energy Density Landscape Mappings Of Intra-Protein Interactions From Static And Dynamic Ensemble Structure Data, Oscar H. Bastidas
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the energetic and dynamic behavior of natural protein fluctuations is critical to elucidating important information associated with a multitude of protein functions including signaling processes, enzyme behavior, aggregation pathways etc... This information is also critically important in the development of novel and effective strategies aimed at target proteins associated with pathologies and disease. In order to obtain such useful information, tools and techniques are lacking that: 1) permit the efficient quantitative analysis of fluctuation behavior of existing protein structure ensembles and 2) permit computationally generated natural fluctuation states of proteins at relatively large timescales demanded by the need for …
Precision Control Of Flow Rate In Microfluidic Channels Using Photoresponsive Soft Polymer Actuators, Colm Delaney, Peter Mccluskey, Simon Coleman, Jeffrey Whyte, Nigel Kent, Dermot Diamond
Precision Control Of Flow Rate In Microfluidic Channels Using Photoresponsive Soft Polymer Actuators, Colm Delaney, Peter Mccluskey, Simon Coleman, Jeffrey Whyte, Nigel Kent, Dermot Diamond
Articles
A novel approach that allows control of flow in microfluidic channels with unsurpassed performance using light is described. Valve structures have been created using photoresponsive hydrogels based on spiropyran-functionalised pNIPAAm hydrogels photopolymerised around pillar structures within the channels. Valve actuation is controlled from outside the fluidic system using externally located LEDs. Highly precise and accurate flow rates can be selected by passing real-time flow rate measurements into a PID algorithm. The optimised algorithm also minimises overshoot of the selected flow rate, eliminates flow rate drift, and improves the system response time. In addition to the dramatic improvements in flow rate …

Strategically Managing Product Innovation To Create Consumer Value: An Analysis In The Context Of The Australian Electric Vehicle Market, Brendan Koehler
Theses
This thesis encompasses a body of research which looks to explore how strategic management, consumer value and product innovation interrelate. In particular, this research will evaluate such a unilateral relationship in specific reference to product innovations developed as a result of emerging and disruptive technology. Therefore, this research will be conducted in the context of the Australian electric vehicle industry. This industry was selected as it has displayed traits of an industry with companies that have a desire to incorporate electric vehicle product innovations into their portfolio from a strategic perspective; yet these product innovations have no particular consumer demand …
Reuse And Recycling Drill Cuttings In Concrete Applications, Maziar Foroutan
Reuse And Recycling Drill Cuttings In Concrete Applications, Maziar Foroutan
LSU Master's Theses
Drill cutting (DC) is a major waste produced during petroleum extraction, which could present a major source of contamination to soil and groundwater, if not disposed of properly. The objective of this study aims to test the hypothesis that drill cuttings can be incorporated as an aggregate in the production of concrete, and is suitable for use in controlled, low-strength material (CLSM) for non-structural applications. To achieve this objective, the physical and consensus properties of drill cuttings were characterized. Concrete mixtures were designed for CLSM applications with and without drill cuttings sampled from two sources. Prepared concrete mixes were then …
Improved Subset Generation For The Mu-Decoder, Utsav Agarwal
Improved Subset Generation For The Mu-Decoder, Utsav Agarwal
LSU Master's Theses
The MU-Decoder is a hardware subset generator that finds use in partial reconfiguration of FPGAs and in numerous other applications. It is capable of generating a set S of subsets of a large set Z_n with n elements. If the subsets in S satisfy the “isomorphic totally- ordered property”, then the MU-Decoder works very efficiently to produce a set of u subsets in O(log n) time and Θ(n √u log n) gate cost. In contrast, a vain approach requires Θ(un) gate cost. We show that this low cost for the MU-Decoder can be achieved without the isomorphism constraint, thereby allowing …
