Advancing The Cyberinfrastructure For Integrated Water Resources Modeling, Caleb A. Buahin
Advancing The Cyberinfrastructure For Integrated Water Resources Modeling, Caleb A. Buahin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Like other scientists, hydrologists encode mathematical formulations that simulate various hydrologic processes as computer programs so that problems with water resource management that would otherwise be manually intractable can be solved efficiently. These computer models are typically developed to answer specific questions within a specific study domain. For example, one computer model may be developed to solve for magnitudes of water flow and water levels in an aquifer while another may be developed to solve for magnitudes of water flow through a water distribution network of pipes and reservoirs. Interactions between different processes are often ignored or are approximated using …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This study addresses a class of NP-hard problem called the Orienteering Problem (OP), which belongs to a well-known class of vehicle routing problems. In the OP, a set of nodes that associated with a location and a score is given. The time required to travel between each pair of nodes is known in advance. The total travel time is limited by a predetermined time budget. The objective is to select a subset of nodes to be visited that maximizes the total collected score within a path. The Team OP (TOP) is an extension of OP that incorporates multiple paths. Another …

Searchable encryption (SE) techniques allow cloud clients to easily store data and search encrypted data in a privacy-preserving manner, where most of SE schemes treat the cloud server as honest-but-curious. However, in practice, the cloud server is a semi-honest-but-curious third-party, which only executes a fraction of search operations and returns a fraction of false search results to save its computational and bandwidth resources. Thus, it is important to provide a results verification method to guarantee the correctness of the search results. Existing SE schemes allow multiple data owners to upload different records to the cloud server, but these schemes have …

Graphmp: An Efficient Semi-External-Memory Big Graph Processing System On A Single Machine, Peng Sun, Yonggang Wen, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Xiaokui Xiao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent studies showed that single-machine graph processing systems can be as highly competitive as clusterbased approaches on large-scale problems. While several outof-core graph processing systems and computation models have been proposed, the high disk I/O overhead could significantly reduce performance in many practical cases. In this paper, we propose GraphMP to tackle big graph analytics on a single machine. GraphMP achieves low disk I/O overhead with three techniques. First, we design a vertex-centric sliding window (VSW) computation model to avoid reading and writing vertices on disk. Second, we propose a selective scheduling method to skip loading and processing unnecessary edge …

A Multiagent-Based Approach For Vehicle Routing By Considering Both Arriving On Time And Total Travel Time, Zhiguang Cao, Hongliang Guo, Jie Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Arriving on time and total travel time are two important properties for vehicle routing. Existing route guidance approaches always consider them independently, because they may conflict with each other. In this article, we develop a semi-decentralized multiagent-based vehicle routing approach where vehicle agents follow the local route guidance by infrastructure agents at each intersection, and infrastructure agents perform the route guidance by solving a route assignment problem. It integrates the two properties by expressing them as two objective terms of the route assignment problem. Regarding arriving on time, it is formulated based on the probability tail model, which aims to …

Finding The 'Faster' Path In Vehicle Routing, Jing Guo, Yaoxin Wu, Xuexi Zhang, Le Zhang, Wei Chen, Zhiguang Cao, Hongliang Guo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this study, the authors improve the faster criterion in vehicle routing by extending the bi-delta distribution to the bi-normal distribution, which is a reasonable assumption for travel time on each road link. Based on this assumption, theoretical models are built for an arbitrary path and subsequently adopted to evaluate two candidate paths through probabilistic comparison. Experimental results demonstrate the bi-normal behaviour of link travel time in practice, and verify the faster criterion's superiority in determining the optimal path either on an artificial network with bi-normal distribution modelling link travel time or on a real road network with real traffic …

Development Of A Multiphase Photon Monte Carlo Method For Spray Combustion And Its Application In High-Pressure Conditions, Somesh Roy, Jian Cai, Michael F. Modest
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In this work the development of a multiphase photon Monte Carlo (PMC) method with a focus on resolving radiative heat transfer in combustion simulations is presented. The multiphase PMC solver can account for description of participating media in both Lagrangian and Eulerian frameworks. The solver is validated against exact solutions in several one-dimensional configurations. The developed solver is then applied to Diesel spray combustions, where liquid spray droplets are assumed to be cold, nonemitting, large, and isotropically scattering. Several formulations for radiative properties of the Diesel spray are first explored. The PMC solver has then been coupled with the multiphase …

Using MATLAB and a National Instruments data acquisition card, a signal processing program meant to monitor the behavior of rotordynamic systems in real-time was developed and tested. By using traditional analysis methods in this field of engineering, commonly desired data representations such as bode, polar, orbit, full spectrum plots were able to be produced to a very high accuracy. Additional capabilities offered by this application are slow roll compensation, synchronous and sub-synchronous filtering, and true three dimensional plotting. The verification of this program was done by comparing the results to the ones acquired with Bently Nevada’s “Automated Diagnostics for Rotating …
Genealogy Extraction And Tree Generation From Free Form Text, Timothy Sui-Tim Chu
Genealogy Extraction And Tree Generation From Free Form Text, Timothy Sui-Tim Chu
Master's Theses
Genealogical records play a crucial role in helping people to discover their lineage and to understand where they come from. They provide a way for people to celebrate their heritage and to possibly reconnect with family they had never considered. However, genealogical records are hard to come by for ordinary people since their information is not always well established in known databases. There often is free form text that describes a person’s life, but this must be manually read in order to extract the relevant genealogical information. In addition, multiple texts may have to be read in order to create …
Sd-Mcan: A Software-Defined Solution For Ip Mobility In Campus Area Networks, Adam Chase Calabrigo
Sd-Mcan: A Software-Defined Solution For Ip Mobility In Campus Area Networks, Adam Chase Calabrigo
Master's Theses
Campus Area Networks (CANs) are a subset of enterprise networks, comprised of a network core connecting multiple Local Area Networks (LANs) across a college campus. Traditionally, hosts connect to the CAN via a single point of attachment; however, the past decade has seen the employment of mobile computing rise dramatically. Mobile devices must obtain new Internet Protocol (IP) addresses at each LAN as they migrate, wasting address space and disrupting host services. To prevent these issues, modern CANs should support IP mobility: allowing devices to keep a single IP address as they migrate between LANs with low-latency handoffs. Traditional approaches …
Smart Dc/Dc Wall Plug Design For The Dc House Project, Richard Sinclair Liu
Smart Dc/Dc Wall Plug Design For The Dc House Project, Richard Sinclair Liu
Master's Theses
The present day duplex wall receptacle in the United States provides 120Vrms AC at 60Hz, which comes from a standard set for AC loads by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. With a DC system, such as what is used in the DC House project currently being developed at Cal Poly, providing DC power to DC loads presents a technical challenge due to the different required DC operating voltages of the loads. This thesis entails the design and construction of a Smart DC/DC Wall Plug, which can automatically adjust its output voltage to match any required DC load voltages. In the …

Master's Theses
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a chronic and progressive, irreversible syndrome that deteriorates the cognitive functions. Official death certificates of 2013 reported 84,767 deaths from Alzheimer’s disease, making it the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. The rate of AD is estimated to double by 2050. The neurodegeneration of AD occurs decades before symptoms of dementia are evident. Therefore, having an efficient methodology for the early and proper diagnosis can lead to more effective treatments.
Neuroimaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can detect changes in the brain of living subjects. Moreover, medical imaging techniques are the …

Ligament injuries are the most common sports injury in the United States. The current clinical practice for treating ligament injuries leaves many patients with significant pain and joint laxity for years following the initial injury. Controlled mechanical stimulation of the tissue after injury is necessary for robust healing, but the optimal mechanical environment for ligament healing is not fully understood. Alternative therapies, such as instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), offer a form of mechanical stimulation that is non-invasive and has shown promising clinical outcomes but the optimal dosage for IASTM treatments is unknown. The objective of this study was …
