Atomically Informed Nonlocal Semidiscrete Variational Peierls-Nabarro Model For Planar Core Dislocations, Guisen Liu, Xi Cheng, Jian Wang, Kaiguo Chen, Yao Shen Jan 2017

Atomically Informed Nonlocal Semidiscrete Variational Peierls-Nabarro Model For Planar Core Dislocations, Guisen Liu, Xi Cheng, Jian Wang, Kaiguo Chen, Yao Shen

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Prediction of Peierls stress associated with dislocation glide is of fundamental concern in understanding and designing the plasticity and mechanical properties of crystalline materials. Here, we develop a nonlocal semi-discrete variational Peierls-Nabarro (SVPN) model by incorporating the nonlocal atomic interactions into the semi-discrete variational Peierls framework. The nonlocal kernel is simplified by limiting the nonlocal atomic interaction in the nearest neighbor region, and the nonlocal coefficient is directly computed from the dislocation core structure. Our model is capable of accurately predicting the displacement profile, and the Peierls stress, of planar-extended core dislocations in face-centered cubic structures. Our model could be …

Photoluminescence From Radiative Surface States And Excitons In Methylammonium Lead Bromide Perovskites, Dengyang Guo, Davide Bartesaghi, Haotong Wei, Eline M. Hutter, Jinsong Huang, Tom J. Savenije

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

In view of its band gap of 2.2 eV and its stability, methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr3) is a possible candidate to serve as a light absorber in a subcell of a multijunction solar cell. Using complementary temperature-dependent time-resolved microwave conductance (TRMC) and photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements, we demonstrate that the exciton yield increases with lower temperature at the expense of the charge carrier generation yield. The low-energy emission at around 580 nm in the cubic phase and the second broad emission peak at 622 nm in the orthorhombic phase originate from radiative recombination of charges trapped in defects with …

Helium Irradiation And Implantation Effects On The Structure Of Amorphous Silicon Oxycarbide, Qing Su, Shinsuke Inoue, Manabu Ishimaru, Jennifer A. Gigax, Tianyao Wang, Hepeng Ding, Michael J. Demkowicz, Lin Shao, Michael Nastasi

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Despite recent interest in amorphous ceramics for a variety of nuclear applications, many details of their structure before and after irradiation/implantation remain unknown. Here we investigated the short-range order of amorphous silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) alloys by using the atomic pair-distribution function (PDF) obtained from electron diffraction. The PDF results show that the structure of SiOC alloys are nearly unchanged after both irradiation up to 30 dpa and He implantation up to 113 at%. TEM characterization shows no sign of crystallization, He bubble or void formation, or segregation in all irradiated samples. Irradiation results in a decreased number of Si-O bonds …

Suspended Graphene-Based Gas Sensor With 1-Mw Energy Consumption, Jong-Hyun Kim, Qin Zhou, Jiyoung Chang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

This paper presents NH3 sensing with ultra-low energy consumption for fast recovery and a graphene sheet based on a suspended microheater. Sensitivity and repeatability are important characteristics of functional gas sensors embedded in mobile devices. Moreover, low energy consumption is an essential requirement in flexible and stretchable mobile electronics due to their small dimension and fluctuating resistivity during mechanical behavior. In this paper, we introduce a graphene-based ultra-low power gas detection device with integration of a suspended silicon heater. Dramatic power reduction is enabled by a duty cycle while not sacrificing sensitivity. The new oscillation method of heating improves …

Vorticella: A Protozoan For Bio-Inspired Engineering, Sangjin Ryu, Rachel E. Pepper, Moeto Nagai, Danielle C. France Jan 2017

Vorticella: A Protozoan For Bio-Inspired Engineering, Sangjin Ryu, Rachel E. Pepper, Moeto Nagai, Danielle C. France

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this review, we introduce Vorticella as a model biological micromachine for microscale engineering systems. Vorticella has two motile organelles: the oral cilia of the zooid and the contractile spasmoneme in the stalk. The oral cilia beat periodically, generating a water flow that translates food particles toward the animal at speeds in the order of 0.1–1 mm/s. The ciliary flow of Vorticella has been characterized by experimental measurement and theoretical modeling, and tested for flow control and mixing in microfluidic systems. The spasmoneme contracts in a few milliseconds, coiling the stalk and moving the zooid at 15–90 mm/s. Because the …

Clustering Opportunistic Ant-Based Routing Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Xinlu Li, Brian Keegan, Fredrick Mtenzi

Conference papers

The wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have a wide range of applications in many ereas, including many kinds of uses such as environmental monitoring and chemical detection. Due to the restriction of energy supply, the improvement of routing performance is the major motivation in WSNs. We present a Clustering Opportunistic Ant-based Routing protocol (COAR), which comprises the following main contributions to achieve high energy efficient and well load-balance: (i) in the clustering algorithm, we caculate the theoretical value of energy dissipation, which will make the number of clusters fluctuate around the expected value, (ii) define novel heuristic function and pheromone update …

Combustion Phasing Through Combustion Ionization In A Caterpillar C7 Compression Ignition Engine, Kamal Ashraf Assaad

Wayne State University Theses

To achieve the goals of best fuel economy, peak power and low soot emissions in military engines it is necessary to control the combustion process. An in-cylinder combustion sensor is required to achieve the goals of controlling the combustion process. Over the last four decades, in-cylinder pressure transducers and ion current sensors have been available for research and development. Most of the effort has focused on the pressure transducer, however up till now a pressure transducer suitable for use in production engines has not been developed yet, because of cost and durability concerns. This work presents the analysis of experimental data …

Therefore, the teams would benefit from identifying new approaches and being more pragmatic and productive in order to achieve satisfactory progress in the competition. This thesis summarizes the approach taken to improve the simulation accuracy of the Wayne State University EcoCAR3 team’s Pre-transmission Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle plant model and HIL setup. Focus is on testing …

Engineering Crystallization Via Phase Field Crystal Model, Deepak Joshi Jan 2017

Engineering Crystallization Via Phase Field Crystal Model, Deepak Joshi

Wayne State University Theses

Charge transfer complex material demonstrate morphological transitions while electro-crystallized on a substrate electrode under varying solute concentration and applied overpotential. It is hypothesized that variations in these parameters affect the thermodynamics and the kinetics of the electro-crystallization process. Having analysed these results, we resort to applying phase field crystal(PFC) model for our theoretical study. Our initial literature review laid foundation to consider PFC model as a powerful tool to study various aspect of crystallization process. In a PFC model the thermodynamic state of a system under study is defined in terms of Helmholtz free energy functional of density profile F=F[ρ(r)].Our …

Reusable Medical Equipment Inventory Assessment At A Detroit Medical Center, Tannaz Khaleghi Jan 2017

Reusable Medical Equipment Inventory Assessment At A Detroit Medical Center, Tannaz Khaleghi

Wayne State University Theses

In recent years an outstanding growth has been observed in utilizing various medical devices due to growing demand. When both the quantity and quality into account, the price of medical devices becomes a critical factor to maintain cost/profit balances in financial systems. As a result healthcare systems should put more emphasis on how many of the trays they buy and store as their inventory due to high costs. Adequate levels of reusable medical equipment (RME) inventory is crucial for many healthcare systems

due to the RME equipment being expensive. On the other, the RME availability for vital departments such as …

Design Of A Modular Endothelialized Platform For Vascularized Bone Regeneration, Kevin Barrett Miles Jan 2017

Design Of A Modular Endothelialized Platform For Vascularized Bone Regeneration, Kevin Barrett Miles

Wayne State University Dissertations

The gold standard for bone regeneration requires harvesting a piece of healthy bone from the patient through a painful procedure, but this piece of autologous bone graft contains the bone and endothelial cells required to rapidly regenerate bone in a defect. We have developed a modular bone regeneration platform, composed of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and hydroxyapatite (HAP) microgranules encapsulated in microcapsules, to replace autologous graft harvesting. The microcapsules are composed of a polyelectrolyte membrane formed by the ionic-complex reaction between chondroitin 4-sulfate (C4S) and chitosan. The specific aims of this thesis were to 1) examine the ability of C4S/HAP/chitosan …

Fundamental Investigation Of The Electrocatalytic Activity Of Layered Mixed Metal Oxides For Low Temperature Oxygen Electrocatalysis, Ayad M. Nacy Jan 2017

Fundamental Investigation Of The Electrocatalytic Activity Of Layered Mixed Metal Oxides For Low Temperature Oxygen Electrocatalysis, Ayad M. Nacy

Wayne State University Dissertations

Li–O2 (Li–air) batteries are among the most promising energy storage technologies due to their high theoretical specific capacity and energy density. Key challenges with this technology include high overpotential losses associated with catalyzing the electrochemical reactions (i.e., oxygen reduction and evolution reactions) at the cathode of the battery. One way to address this challenge is to incorporate an active electrocatalyst, such as first-order Ruddlesden-Popper series of layered oxides. We show that the composition of the A-site in first-order Ruddlesden-Popper series of layered oxides (A2BO4) has a significant effect in the electrochemical activity of Li-O2 cathodes. Among the oxides composed of …

Data Masking, Encryption, And Their Effect On Classification Performance: Trade-Offs Between Data Security And Utility, Juan C. Asenjo Jan 2017

Data Masking, Encryption, And Their Effect On Classification Performance: Trade-Offs Between Data Security And Utility, Juan C. Asenjo

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

As data mining increasingly shapes organizational decision-making, the quality of its results must be questioned to ensure trust in the technology. Inaccuracies can mislead decision-makers and cause costly mistakes. With more data collected for analytical purposes, privacy is also a major concern. Data security policies and regulations are increasingly put in place to manage risks, but these policies and regulations often employ technologies that substitute and/or suppress sensitive details contained in the data sets being mined. Data masking and substitution and/or data encryption and suppression of sensitive attributes from data sets can limit access to important details. It is believed …

An Examination Of Virtual Environment Training Fidelity On Training Effectiveness, Roberto K. Champney, Kay M. Stanney, Laura Milham, Meredith Carroll, John V. Cohn

Aeronautics Faculty Publications

Live training is a vital component of military training. Unfortunately it can be expensive, resource intensive, of limited accessibility or impossible to achieve due to the risks involved. Virtual environment (VEs) training environments can provide trainees with opportunities to practice key skills and work out performance issues in a more cost effective environment, which may lead to more efficient use of live training time. The current study explored this premise by conducting a transfer of training study that examined the question of whether pre-training in low and/or high fidelity VEs can lead to time savings and improved performance in live …

Anomalous Decay Of Nanomechanical Modes Going Through Nonlinear Resonance, Oriel Shoshani, Steven W. Shaw, Mark I. Dykman Jan 2017

Anomalous Decay Of Nanomechanical Modes Going Through Nonlinear Resonance, Oriel Shoshani, Steven W. Shaw, Mark I. Dykman

Mechanical and Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Because of the small size of nanomechanical systems, their vibrations become nonlinear already for small amplitudes. Many nontrivial aspects of the vibration dynamics arise from the coexistence of several nonlinearly coupled modes. We show that such coupling can lead to anomalous decay of the modes where they go through nonlinear resonance, so that their amplitude-dependent frequencies become commensurate. We demonstrate the possibility of a strongly nonmonotonic dependence of the decay rate on the amplitude if one of the modes serves as a thermal reservoir for another mode. Where the decay of both modes is slow compared to the rate of …

A Novel Ddcc+ Based First-Order Current-Mode Active-C All-Pass Filter Using A Grounded Capacitor, Remzi̇ Arslanalp Jan 2017

A Novel Ddcc+ Based First-Order Current-Mode Active-C All-Pass Filter Using A Grounded Capacitor, Remzi̇ Arslanalp

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a novel first-order current-mode active-C all-pass filter based on a companding idea is proposed. In the design of the filter, a state space method is used. The proposed structure consists of only two plus-type differential difference current conveyors, nine external MOSFETs, and a single grounded capacitor. The dominant advantages of the proposed filter are briefly described as follows: offering resistorless design, consuming low power, having an electronic tunability property of its pole frequency, and not suffering from the disadvantage of any passive component matching conditions. By cascading two all-pass filters in a closed negative feedback loop, a …

A Novel Approach For Extracting Ideal Exemplars By Clustering For Massivetime-Ordered Datasets, Ömer Faruk Ertuğrul Jan 2017

A Novel Approach For Extracting Ideal Exemplars By Clustering For Massivetime-Ordered Datasets, Ömer Faruk Ertuğrul

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The number and length of massive datasets have increased day by day and this yields more complex machine learning stages due to the high computational costs. To decrease the computational cost many methods were proposed in the literature such as data condensing, feature selection, and filtering. Although clustering methods are generally employed to divide samples into groups, another way of data condensing is by determining ideal exemplars (or prototypes), which can be used instead of the whole dataset. In this study, first the efficiency of traditional data condensing by clustering approach was confirmed according to obtained accuracies and condensing ratios …

Nonlinear Model Predictive Control Based On Fuzzy Wavelet Neural Network And Chaos Optimization, Mehrnoush Davanipour, Hanieh Asadipooya Jan 2017

Nonlinear Model Predictive Control Based On Fuzzy Wavelet Neural Network And Chaos Optimization, Mehrnoush Davanipour, Hanieh Asadipooya

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper a combined controller is proposed for nonlinear dynamical systems. The controller is constructed by a fuzzy wavelet network and nonlinear model predictive control. Chaotic optimization, which is fast and robust, is applied to generate optimized controlled input in nonlinear model predictive control. The ability of the fuzzy wavelet neural network and the proposed controller is shown by simulation. It is illustrated that the proposed method is able to increase the speed of tracking in addition to having very little steady state error. Using chaotic optimization makes the controller robust in the presence of noise.
