Strain Path Effect On Austenite Transformation And Ductility In Q&P 1180 Steel, Jeffrey Grant Cramer Dec 2017

Strain Path Effect On Austenite Transformation And Ductility In Q&P 1180 Steel, Jeffrey Grant Cramer

Theses and Dissertations

The ductility of Q&P 1180 steel was studied with regard to retained austenite transformation under different strain paths. Specimens were tested in uniaxial tension in a standard test frame as well as in situ in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Then digital image correlation (DIC) was used to compute the effective strain at the level of the individual phases in the microstructure. Stretching experiments were also performed using limiting dome height (LDH) tooling, where specimens were strained in both biaxial and plane strain tension. The experiments were done incrementally, for each strain path, and the retained austenite at each level …

Relative Navigation Of Micro Air Vehicles In Gps-Degraded Environments, David Orton Wheeler Dec 2017

Relative Navigation Of Micro Air Vehicles In Gps-Degraded Environments, David Orton Wheeler

Theses and Dissertations

Most micro air vehicles rely heavily on reliable GPS measurements for proper estimation and control, and therefore struggle in GPS-degraded environments. When GPS is not available, the global position and heading of the vehicle is unobservable. This dissertation establishes the theoretical and practical advantages of a relative navigation framework for MAV navigation in GPS-degraded environments. This dissertation explores how the consistency, accuracy, and stability of current navigation approaches degrade during prolonged GPS dropout and in the presence of heading uncertainty. Relative navigation (RN) is presented as an alternative approach that maintains observability by working with respect to a local coordinate …

Microstructural Evaluation Of Hydrogen Embrittlement And Successive Recovery In Advanced High Strength Steel, Quentin Scott Allen Dec 2017

Microstructural Evaluation Of Hydrogen Embrittlement And Successive Recovery In Advanced High Strength Steel, Quentin Scott Allen

Theses and Dissertations

Advanced high strength steels (AHSS) have high susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement, and are often exposed to hydrogen environments in processing. In order to study the embrittlement and recovery of steel, tensile tests were conducted on two different types of AHSS over time after hydrogen charging. Concentration measurements and hydrogen microprinting were carried out at the same time steps to visualize the hydrogen behavior during recovery. The diffusible hydrogen concentration was found to decay exponentially, and equations were found for the two types of steel. Hydrogen concentration decay rates were calculated to be -0.355 /hr in TBF steel, and -0.225 /hr …

Synthesis Of Regioselectively Acylated Quercetin Analogues With Improved Antiplatelet Activity, Yu Duan, Na Sun, Min Xue, Xiaolan Wang, Hu Yang

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The aim of the present study was to report on a complete synthetic approach, namely benzylation-hydrolysis-acylation-hydrogenation, to the synthesis of regioselectively acylated quercetin analogues using low-cost rutin as a starting material. Three quercetin analogues, quercetin-3-O-propionate (Q-pr), quercetin-3-O-butyrate (Q-bu) and quercetin-3-O-valerate (Q-va), containing 3-, 4- and 5-carbon aliphatic acyl chains, respectively, were synthesized and characterized with 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13C NMR and mass spectrometry. Compared with quercetin, all three analogues exhibited improved lipophilicity. The lipophilicity of the analogue increased with increasing acyl chain length. Q-va exhibited the highest lipophilicity among the three analogues, but a lower water …

Nanograin Size Effects On The Strength Of Biphase Nanolayered Composites, Sixie Huang, Irene J. Beyerlein, Caizhi Zhou Dec 2017

Nanograin Size Effects On The Strength Of Biphase Nanolayered Composites, Sixie Huang, Irene J. Beyerlein, Caizhi Zhou

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, we employ atomic-scale simulations to uncover the interface-driven deformation mechanisms in biphase nanolayered composites. Two internal boundaries persist in these materials, the interlayer crystalline boundaries and intralayer biphase interfaces, and both have nanoscale dimensions. These internal surfaces are known to control the activation and motion of dislocations, and despite the fact that most of these materials bear both types of interfaces. From our calculations, we find that the first defect event, signifying yield, is controlled by the intralayer spacing (grain size, d), and not the intralayer biphase spacing (layer thickness, h). The interplay of two internal sizes …

Devcon's In-House Design Department Benefiting Their Construction Process: A Case Study, Neeka M. Nazhand

Construction Management

Devcon Construction Inc. is a general contracting company that implements a design department in-house to aid them with their design-build projects. Since their doors opened in 1976, Devcon has imbedded an in-house design department that now delegates about twenty-five percent of their design-build projects, and acts as a resource center for their other construction projects. Having this unique design department benefits both the design and construction side of projects, because working for the same company motivates the teams to work together and solve problems faster. The design department is not for direct profit and only works with Devcon’s contractors, mainly …

The construction industry is constantly looking for new ways to improve project efficiency and profitability. Many new technologies such as Business Information Modeling (BIM) programs, and project management software have been introduced to aid in preconstruction and on site coordination. However, traditional building methods have remained relatively unchanged for decades. 3D printing (3DP) is a promising new technology that has the potential to not only be an effective means of increasing project efficiency and profitability in the field, but also have positive environmental impacts. However, as it exists today, this technology is highly limited by size, material, skilled labor, and …

Evaluating The California Contractors Licensing Exam And Its Relevance To The Construction Industry, Austin O'Mara Dec 2017

Evaluating The California Contractors Licensing Exam And Its Relevance To The Construction Industry, Austin O'Mara

Construction Management

The California contractors licensing exam tests aspiring contractors on their knowledge of the construction industry on other legal and trade topics. This paper is a case study that evaluates the contractors licensing exam and its ability to evaluate contractors. It concludes that the test itself is not responsible for increasing quality due to it being a simple process of memorization, but that California’s strict licensing requirements correlate to lower percentages of negative reviews. Various contractors from California were interviewed to understand their opinions of the licensing exam and how the knowledge from the exam related to their time in the …

Case Study: Mitigating Schedule Impacts From Oshpd Regulations On Medical Equipment, Peter K. Lee

Construction Management

The vast majority of healthcare construction projects in the state of California work with OSHPD—Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development—to meet California’s Hospital Seismic Safety Law. While meeting the state’s Hospital Seismic Safety Law is important and even critical, working with OSHPD’s stringent regulations does imply additional concerns to be addressed by the project team. One concern regards the approval of bigger medical equipment and its impact on the overall construction schedule. This paper examines the factors that contribute to delays in the construction schedule, responsible parties for the delay, and responsibilities of each involved party. Based on an …
