Resilience Of Cloud Networking Services For Large Scale Outages, Mahsa Pourvali
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cloud infrastructure services are enabling organizations and enterprises to outsource a wide range of computing, storage, and networking needs to external service providers. These offerings make extensive use of underlying network virtualization, i.e., virtual network (VN) embedding, techniques to provision and interconnect customized storage/computing resource pools across large network substrates. However, as cloud-based services continue to gain traction, there is a growing need to address a range of resiliency concerns, particularly with regards to large-scale outages. These conditions can be triggered by events such as natural disasters, malicious man-made attacks, and even cascading power failures.
Overall, a wide range of …

Reactor Design And Operation Variables To Improve Mixed Algal Biomass Productivity And Solids Separation: An Examination Of Operation Parameters, Density, And Settleability, Derek Jan Wichhart
Civil Engineering ETDs
Algae have been identified as a source of renewable, clean energy, with much research being devoted to identifying high energy yield algae, energy extraction methods, and reactor design with mono-cultures of algae, but little research has been done on reactor design and operational conditions with mixed cultures of algae to improve productivity and solids separation. The objective of this study was to determine if the settling characteristics of mixed algal cultures can be enriched or improved through manipulation of reactor design characteristics by incorporating cyclic settling or floating phases into operation, timing of light/dark cycles, and/or control of the solids …
Integrated Framework For Wildfire Risk Mitigation Planning At The Wildland/Urban Interface, Elmira Kalhor
Integrated Framework For Wildfire Risk Mitigation Planning At The Wildland/Urban Interface, Elmira Kalhor
Civil Engineering ETDs
Past suppression-based wildfire management practices have increased the frequency and intensity of wildfires. Advocates for the re-introduction of natural wildfire regimes must also prioritize wildfire damage protection, especially for vulnerable communities located near forests. Areas where urban and forest lands interdigitate are called the Wildland Urban Interfaces (WUIs). In the United States, the area of the WUIs is increasing, making more people vulnerable to wildfires. By responding to four research objectives, this dissertation proposed and tested an integrated framework for wildfire risk mitigation decision making at WUIs. Decision makers who could benefit from the results of this dissertation include WUI …

Simulation And Analysis Of A Drilling Fluid Using A Herschel-Bulkley Model, Daniel Powell
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
In the study, a drilling fluid with known properties is analyzed and simulated in the laminar regime through a pipe with dimensions of 1.5m in length and 0.02m in diameter. The purpose of the conducted analysis is to demonstrate the advantages of the Herschel-Bulkley model currently used in the oil and gas industry for analyzing non-Newtonian drilling fluids.
For comparison, the analysis is also performed using more simple models for non-Newtonian fluids such as the Bingham Plastic model and the Power Law model and for a Newtonian fluid (water). In addition to analytical models, computations are conducted using …
General Aviation Hypoxia And Reporting Statistics, Timothy B. Holt, Jacqueline Luedtke, Claire Schindler
General Aviation Hypoxia And Reporting Statistics, Timothy B. Holt, Jacqueline Luedtke, Claire Schindler
Publications
“All too often, pilots tell me they don't need physiological training because they don't fly that high. The statement points out the general feelings of a large majority of the aviation population. I suppose then the burning question is ‘why do we still have aircraft accidents?’” (Boshers, 2015). To this day there are no statistics on how often general aviation pilots experience hypoxia during everyday operations. General aviation pilots (i.e. non-commercial operations) were chosen for this study because:
- Little regulation regarding flight physiology training
- General attitude of invulnerability towards hypoxia
- No requirement to report hypoxia or similar events
Experimental Evaluation Of Cooling Effectiveness And Water Conservation In A Poultry House Using Flow Blurring® Atomizers, Rafael M. Rodriguez
Experimental Evaluation Of Cooling Effectiveness And Water Conservation In A Poultry House Using Flow Blurring® Atomizers, Rafael M. Rodriguez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Increases in population as well as economic improvements in developing countries are generating a larger demand for animal protein products. Current animal growth processes inherently, require the use of water in many forms throughout the growth cycle. Water is the most important natural resource on earth to sustain life, and in many developing countries is a scarce resource that must be used wisely. Studies have revealed that poultry growth can take place with less water consumption, when compared with other sources of animal protein (e.g., cattle, pork). In this research, an evaporative Flow Blurring® cooling system was considered as …

Interactions Of A Counter-Rotating Vortex Pair At Multiple Offsets, Kyle Forster, Tracie J. Barber, Sammy Diasinos, Graham Doig
Aerospace Engineering
The interactions between two streamwise vortices were investigated by wind tunnel testing of two NACA0012 vanes at various lateral offsets. One vane was spaced 10 chord lengths (C) downstream of the other, with both at an angle of incidence of 8 degrees and a Reynolds number of 7 x 104. The evolution of the vortex pair was observed until 6.5C behind the downstream vane using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). It was found that proximity of the upstream vortex to the downstream vane had a significant effect on the rotational rate of the subsequent vortex pair, with far offset …

A Leaky Integrate-And-Fire Neuron With Adjustable Refractory Period And Spike Frequency Adaptation, Jacob N. Healy
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
As standard CMOS technology approaches its physical limitations there is increased motivation to explore new computing paradigms. One possible path forward is to develop an array of computational architectures which specialize in distinct tasks. Neural computing architectures excel at pattern recognition and processing low-fidelity sensory input, but one of the biggest challenges in the field has been implementing architectures which strike an appropriate balance between biologically-plausible performance and the simplicity needed to make large neural systems practical. This work proposes a new VLSI neural architecture which seeks to provide such a balance.
The design described here builds on an implementation …

Machine Learning Based Mom (Ml-Mom) For Parasitic Capacitance Extractions, He Ming Yao, Yu Wei Qin, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper is a rethinking of the conventional method of moments (MoM) using the modern machine learning (ML) technology. By repositioning the MoM matrix and unknowns in an artificial neural network (ANN), the conventional linear algebra MoM solving is changed into a machine learning training process. The trained result is the solution. As an application, the parasitic capacitance extraction broadly needed by VLSI modeling is solved through the proposed new machine learning based method of moments (ML-MoM). The multiple linear regression (MLR) is employed to train the model. The computations are done on Amazon Web Service (AWS). Benchmarks demonstrated the …
Interference Of Light In Multilayer Metasurfaces: Perfect Absorber And Antireflection Coating, Khagendra Prasad Bhattarai
Interference Of Light In Multilayer Metasurfaces: Perfect Absorber And Antireflection Coating, Khagendra Prasad Bhattarai
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
We have studied several metamaterials structures with multiple layers by explaining them theoretically and verifying experimentally. The engineered structures we have designed work either as a perfect absorber or antireflection coating. The multilayer model as we call it Three Layer Model (TLM) has been developed, which gives the total reflection and transmission as a function of reflection and transmission of individual layers. By manipulating the amplitude and phase of the reflection and the transmission of the individual layers, we can get the required functionality of the optoelectronic devices. To get zero reflection in the both perfect absorber and the antireflection …

Thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and volumetric heat capacity of three spider silks are measured in this paper as a benchmark for further studies. These silks include the major and minor ampullate silks of the Nephila clavipes spider, and a synthetic spider silk fiber made from recombinant dragline silk proteins purified from transgenic goats’ milk. Two complementary measurement techniques are employed in the thermal characterization of these microscale single fibers for self-verification. One is the transient electrothermal technique (TET) and the other is the 3ω method. Experimental measurements indicate that thermal properties of the dragline silk are very close to those …

Neuropeptide Modulation Of The Large Conductance Potassium (Bk) Channel In The Auditory System: Therapeutic Implications For Age-Related Hearing Loss, Ellliott James Brecht
Neuropeptide Modulation Of The Large Conductance Potassium (Bk) Channel In The Auditory System: Therapeutic Implications For Age-Related Hearing Loss, Ellliott James Brecht
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The auditory temporal processing deficits associated with age-dependent hearing decline have been increasingly attributed to issues beyond peripheral hearing loss. Age-related hearing loss (ARHL), also known as presbycusis, is linked with changes in the expression of both excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters in the central auditory system. There are also age-related changes in the expression and function of the ion channels which mediate action potential firing. The slow, Ca2+ activated, K+ channels of the BK-type are essential in controlling both neurotransmitter release and neural communication via alteration of action potential durations, firing frequency, and neural adaptation. There are many …

Effect Of Plasma Dynamics On Gallium Nitride Nanorod And Growth By Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Dever Paul Norman
Effect Of Plasma Dynamics On Gallium Nitride Nanorod And Growth By Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Dever Paul Norman
Theses and Dissertations
GaN is a wide bandgap semiconductor known for its use in high-frequency switching electronics and laser diodes, its stability as a high-temperature transistor material, and a radiation resistance which makes it an ideal material for space applications. Additionally, the discovery of the bandgap tunability of nitride materials using GaN has led to successful development of adjustable wavelength LED devices. However, the success of devices far outpaces the understanding of their material growth, making advances difficult to build upon. Plasma- Assisted Molecular Beam Epitaxy (PA-MBE) is an ideal growth method for achieving very precise structures for detailed study. Although plasma itself …

Controlling And Monitoring Voice Quality In Internet Communication, An Thanh Le
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is on its way to surpassing toll quality. Although VoIP shares its transmission channel with other communication traffic, today internet has a wider bandwidth than the legacy Digital Loop Carrier and voice could be digitized higher than traditional 8 kbps, to say 16 kbps. Thus, VoIP should not be limited by the toll quality. However, VoIP quality could go down, as a result of unpredictable traffic congestion and network imperfections. These two situations cause delay jitter and packet loss of VoIP. To overcome these challenges, there are ongoing works for service providers including but …

Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells: Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) are a multipotent cell, meaning they are able to differentiate into a more mature cell type, such as osteocytes, chondrocytes, and adipocytes, that are found in numerous tissues in the human body, such as bone marrow, fat, and muscle. Since hMSCs can be derived from adult human tissues, they do not have the same ethical concern associated with them as other stem cells, such as embryonic stem cells. Due to hMSCs multipotency and ease of obtaining, they have become one of the most widely researched stem cell types in areas such …
