A Pilot “Big Data” Education Module Curriculum For Engineering Graduate Education: Development And Implementation, Megan R. Sapp Nelson, Line C. Pouchard

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Projects in engineering higher education increasingly produce data in the volume, variety, velocity, and need for veracity such that the output of the research is considered “Big Data”. While engineering faculty members do conceive of and direct the research producing this data, there may be gaps in faculty members’ knowledge in training graduate and undergraduate research assistants in the practical management of Big Data. The project described in this research paper details the development of a Big Data education module for graduate researchers in Electrical and Computer Engineering. The project has the following objectives: to document and describe current data …

On Intelligent Mitigation Of Process Starvation In Multilevel Feedback Queue Scheduling, Joseph E. Brown Apr 2017

On Intelligent Mitigation Of Process Starvation In Multilevel Feedback Queue Scheduling, Joseph E. Brown

Master of Science in Computer Science Theses

CPU time-share process schedulers for computer operating systems have existed since Corbato published his paper on the Compatible Time Sharing System in 1962 [8]. With this new type of scheduler came the need to effectively divide CPU time between N processes, where N could be 2 or more processes. Modern time-sharing process schedulers which have been developed in the decades since have been designed to favor shorter, interactive processes over long-running processes, especially when incoming demand for CPU time exceeds supply and process starvation is inevitable. These schedulers, including Linux CFS, FreeBSD Ule, and the Solaris Fair Share Scheduler, are …

The study conceptualized Safety Management System (SMS) initiative, self-efficacy, and transformational safety leadership as constructs that relates to safety behavior (measured by safety compliance and safety participation) when mediated by safety motivation using a quantitative approach. Structural equation modeling techniques was used to derive a final measurement model that fit the empirical data and was used to test the study hypotheses. Utilizing a sample of 282 collegiate flight students and instructors from a large public university in the US, a 46-item survey was used to measure respondent’s perceptions on the study variables. The results indicate that perceptions of SMS policy …

Probing The Effects Of Surface Hydrophobicity And Tether Orientation On Antibody-Antigen Binding, Derek B. Bush, Thomas A. Knotts Iv Apr 2017

Probing The Effects Of Surface Hydrophobicity And Tether Orientation On Antibody-Antigen Binding, Derek B. Bush, Thomas A. Knotts Iv

Faculty Publications

Antibody microarrays have the potential to revolutionize molecular detection for many applications, but their current use is limited by poor reliability, and efforts to change this have not yielded fruitful results. One difficulty which limits the rational engineering of next-generation devices is that little is known, at the molecular level, about the antibody-antigen binding process near solid surfaces. Atomic-level structural information is scant because typical experimental techniques (X-ray crystallography and NMR) cannot be used to image proteins bound to surfaces. To overcome this limitation, this study uses molecular simulation and an advanced, experimentally validated, coarse-grain, protein-surface model to compare fab-lysozyme …

Comparison Of Chemical-Use Between Hydraulic Fracturing, Acidizing, And Routine Oil And Gas Development, Mary Kay Camarillo, William T. Stringfellow, J. K. Domen, S. B. Shonkoff

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

The potential hazards and risks associated with well-stimulation in unconventional oil and gas development (hydraulic fracturing, acid fracturing, and matrix acidizing) have been investigated and evaluated and federal and state regulations requiring chemical disclosure for well-stimulation have been implemented as part of an overall risk management strategy for unconventional oil and gas development. Similar evaluations for chemicals used in other routine oil and gas development activities, such as maintenance acidizing, gravel packing, and well drilling, have not been previously conducted, in part due to a lack of reliable information concerning on-field chemical-use. In this study, we compare chemical-use between routine …

Mapping And Integrating Value Creation Factors With Life-Cycle Stages For Sustainable Manufacturing, P. Bilge, S. Emec, G. Seliger, Ibrahim S. Jawahir Apr 2017

Mapping And Integrating Value Creation Factors With Life-Cycle Stages For Sustainable Manufacturing, P. Bilge, S. Emec, G. Seliger, Ibrahim S. Jawahir

Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing Faculty Publications

Instead of implementing each element individually, engineers must be aware of multiple interactions among all major value creation factors and their life-cycle stages. Interactions are analyzed by a set of factors and hierarchical levels within a production system based on empirical observations and described in analytical models. Such analyses and missing information about the current condition of the system and its parts remain limited to addressing specific aspects of interactions among factors and stages for multiple decision making. To build a case-based scope addressing the interactions among a set of factors and life-cycle stages, a comprehensive approach for mapping and …

Mixing Of Spin And Orbital Angular Momenta Via Second-Harmonic Generation In Plasmonic And Dielectric Chiral Nanostructures, Xiaoyan Y.Z. Xiong, Ahmed Al-Jarro, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Nicolae C. Panoiu, Wei E.I. Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a theoretical study of the characteristics of the nonlinear spin-orbital angular momentum coupling induced by second-harmonic generation in plasmonic and dielectric nanostructures made of centrosymmetric materials. In particular, the connection between the phase singularities and polarization helicities in the longitudinal components of the fundamental and second-harmonic optical fields and the scatterer symmetry properties are discussed. By in-depth comparison between the interaction of structured optical beams with plasmonic and dielectric nanostructures, we have found that all-dielectric and plasmonic nanostructures that exhibit magnetic and electric resonances have comparable second-harmonic conversion efficiency. In addition, mechanisms for second-harmonic enhancement for single and …

Nano selective area growth (NSAG) by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy of high-quality InGaN nanopyramids on GaN-coated ZnO/c-sapphire is reported. Nanopyramids grown on epitaxial low-temperature GaN-on-ZnO are uniform and appear to be single crystalline, as well as free of dislocations and V-pits. They are also indium-rich (with homogeneous 22% indium incorporation) and relatively thick (100 nm). These properties make them comparable to nanostructures grown on GaN and AlN/Si templates, in terms of crystallinity, quality, morphology, chemical composition and thickness. Moreover, the ability to selectively etch away the ZnO allows for the potential lift-off and transfer of the InGaN/GaN nanopyramids onto …

Ziemba, Manoj K. Gottipati, Filbert Totsingan, Cheryl M. Hanes, Richard A. Gross, Michelle R. Lennartz, Ryan J. Gilbert

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Peritoneal macrophages (PMACs) and spinal cord astrocytes were exposed to varying concentrations of soluble sophorolipid butyl ester diacetate (SLBEDA) in vitro. Macrophages and astrocytes demonstrated no decrease in viability in response to SLBEDA. Studying pro- and anti-inflammatory genes, PMACs did not show a shift toward a pro-inflammatory phenotype. However, at higher concentrations (3 and 30 μM), astrocytes showed an increase in their expression of glial acidic fibrillary protein. This novel category of compounds poses low risk to PMAC and astrocyte viability; however, the effect on PMAC polarization and astrocyte reactivity requires more elucidation.

Design Of A Cubesat Separation Mechanism, Ross Hiller Apr 2017

Design Of A Cubesat Separation Mechanism, Ross Hiller

Honors Theses

CubeSats are compact, relatively inexpensive satellites that are often used for space research. In order to perform research related to electric propulsion devices, the Western Aerospace Launch Initiative (WALI) requires a medium-sized CubeSat capable of separating into two bodies while in orbit. Intentional separation is not common in CubeSats, so two original concepts were designed and simulated using 3D CAD and finite element analysis software. These designs were compared based on factors including weight, cost, size, and their potential to fail due to creation of debris or binding between components, in order to determine which will more effectively execute the …

Reprinter, Christian Brower Apr 2017

Reprinter, Christian Brower

Honors Theses

Additive manufacturing (3D printing) is a rapidly growing technology, though, expensive printing filament and wasted material make it less affordable and an unsustainable process. The RePrinter combats these issues by recycling scrap 3D printed plastic parts and household plastics, such as pop bottles, and creates filament for fused deposition modeling (FDM). This product is a fully automated system which grinds, extrudes, and spools the filament for immediate use in FDM. The RePrinter works to control the extrusion speeds and tensions to optimize precise filament dimensions for quality 3D printing, while delivering the product in a timely cost effective manner.

Computing The Reach-Avoid Set For Space Vehicle Maneuvering In The Presence Of Debris, Matthew Shubert

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The ability to guarantee the safety of autonomously controlled space vehicles is of great importance to help avoid accidents and ensure mission success. In this paper we investigate the safety verification of a satellite attempting to maneuver to a new position while avoiding multiple pieces of debris. We assume that the satellite, desired rendezvous point, and all debris are near the same circular orbit with dynamics modeled by Clohessy-Wiltshire-Hill (CWH) equations. We will use reachability methods to guarantee the satellite is able to reach a desired point while avoiding all debris. We will first develop a computationally efficient method for …

Optimizing Swap For Directed Energy – Detection Of Buried Conductors With Low-Energy High-Voltage Pulses, Jon C. Pouncey

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

High-voltage directed energy systems have shown promise in the role of neutralizing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in various experiments over the last decade. While these systems can be very effective with significant benefits over conventional counter-IED techniques, the excessive space, weight, and prime power (SWaP) requirements create significant challenges in developing deployable systems. One promising technique for dramatically reducing the SWaP requirement for certain types of directed energy counter-IED systems is the separation of the pulsed-power circuits into high voltage and high energy subsystems. In this technique, termed low average power high-voltage energy (LP-HVE) a repetitive low-energy, high-voltage pulse subsystem …

Safety Analysis Of A Flashing Drum Steam Generation System, Jacob Ladd, Cade Memmott

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The goal of the Integral, Inherently Safe Light Water Reactor (I2S-LWR) Research Project is to design a more inherently safe reactor. This reactor is capable of cooling the core with no external power and no operator action.[1] In the I2S-LWR design, micro-channel heat exchangers (MCHX) facilitate heat transfer from the reactor to the steam generation system (SGS), where steam is used to produce electricity.1, 2

The I2S-LWR design requires the use of a “flashing” drum to produce steam, and the flashing drum and its impact on the SGS must be evaluated for safety before it can be incorporated into …

Origami: Numerical Solutions Of Apparent Absorptivity In Origami Folds, Michael Farnsworth, Brian Iverson Apr 2017

Origami: Numerical Solutions Of Apparent Absorptivity In Origami Folds, Michael Farnsworth, Brian Iverson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

There are three major types of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. In many cases, radiation is ignored due to the fact that the amount of heat transferred by this method tend to be small compared to conduction and convection. However, in space and in some settings on earth, radiation is dominant and important. Absorptivity is a measure of an object’s ability to absorb radiation, and apparent absorptivity is a measure of how the shape of an object affects the amount of radiation that it absorbs. For example, if you were to shine a flashlight on a mirror, the light …
