Experimental And Computational Study Of The Acclimation Of New It Equipment, Neil Johnson Vazhappilly May 2017

Experimental And Computational Study Of The Acclimation Of New It Equipment, Neil Johnson Vazhappilly

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Acclimation of newly commissioned IT equipment is an important step that is necessary for safe operations. Proper acclimation is required to prevent an unnecessary condensation from forming and causing premature failure in the equipment. Acclimation is particularly important in cold weather shipping where the component or server reaches the destination well below the destination data center’s dew point, resulting in moisture and condensate. Operating the equipment before it acclimates might cause damage, while waiting too long for the equipment to acclimate might cost companies expensive computational time. This study tries to address the issue by studying the various factors that …

Productivity Improvement And Cost Optimization Of Small And Medium Scale Enterprises, Unmesh Vishwas Tamhankar

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Theses - Archive

Productivity improvement and cost optimization have been a topic of discussion for at least a century. The publication of Fredrick Taylor’s book ‘The Principles of Scientific Management’ in 1911 can be considered as the beginning of the Efficiency movement. Surprisingly, the awareness about the principles of Industrial Engineering is relatively low in many family-owned Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs). According to a World Bank report, formal SMEs make up 45% of total employment and contribute 33% of GDP in emerging markets. In the USA, SMEs make up for more than 95% of all firms and employ 50% of private …

A study was conducted to characterize the flow-field in the suction region of different inlet geometries of a cross-flow fan. The characterization was accomplished by correlating the static performance curves measured for each fan-inlet configuration to the streamline plot obtained using a particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) measurement system at three constant flow rates (25, 40, and 55 CFM). The PTV measurement system used was developed by the author and uses helium bubbles as tracers, an LED light sheet, a slow motion camera, and a Matlab program. Four inlet geometry design variables were defined and independently studied to evaluate the effect …

Application Of Raman Spectroscopy To Study Of Biological Systems, Neva Agarwala May 2017

Application Of Raman Spectroscopy To Study Of Biological Systems, Neva Agarwala

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Raman spectroscopy is an important tool of molecular characterization based on inelastic scattering of monochromatic light by molecules. Since Raman spectra reflect unique vibrational properties of materials, the method offers a potential of selective molecular identification. Furthermore, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) also is capable of a high sensitivity, since inelastic scattering of light from the molecules is strongly enhanced when Raman-active molecules are located close to roughened noble metal surfaces. In this thesis, Raman characterization protocols of liquid biological samples are optimized. Raman spectra of two different cell cultures, yeast cells and HeLa cells, were collected and interpreted. The potentiality …

Development Of Many-Body Potential For Deformation Study In Al-Tin Nanolayered Composites, Paul Yaohan Simanjuntak

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

A novel interatomic potential of ternary Al-Ti-N has been developed to study the deformation behavior of Al-TiN nanolaminates. The ternary nanolayered Al-TiN composite has attracted a lot of interest due to its combination of strength and ductility. The current analysis on the system has been primarily concentrated on continuum models which are inadequate to explain the key deformation events such as nucleation and interaction of dislocations. Progress in the preferred atomistic approach has been hampered however by the lack of available interatomic potential optimized for the ternary system. I developed a many-body potential based on embedded atomic model (EAM) by …

Multifunctional Transition Metal Oxide Core Shell Magnetic Nanoparticles, Mahmud Reaz May 2017

Multifunctional Transition Metal Oxide Core Shell Magnetic Nanoparticles, Mahmud Reaz

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Oxide core-shell nanoparticles (CSNPs) have attracted considerable interest for their multifunctional properties. Luminescent ZnO, ferroelectric BaTiO3, and inverse spinel iron oxide can be exploited to develop magneto-luminescent and multiferroic nanomaterials. The novel sonochemical method has been used to synthesize the nanomaterials. Atomic-scale spectroscopy establishes the core-shell nature and multifunctional properties of the nanomaterials. Magnetic hysteresis (coercivity, remnant, and saturation magnetization) and temperature dependent data indicate the key structural difference between the oxidized and reduced ZnO/iron oxide CSNPs. Variation in the coercive field and remnant and saturation magnetization further confirms the presence of different iron oxides in the shell region. Temperature …

Analyzing Potential Benefits Of Heat Integration Designs For A Dtbp Production Plant, Paul Stanzione May 2017

Analyzing Potential Benefits Of Heat Integration Designs For A Dtbp Production Plant, Paul Stanzione

Senior Theses

This thesis looks at the implementation of various heat integration designs for a ditertiary butyl peroxide (DTBP) production plant. Heat integration, also known as process integration, is a common industrial practice in the chemical process industry to reduce utility costs. Heat integration is commonly analyzed using pinch technology, which focuses producing a heat exchanger design that pairs hot streams with excess energy with cold streams that need to be heated. These designs usually cut utility costs, but they also require the building of more heat exchangers to place within the process.

Evaluation And Modeling Of The Different Material Properties Of The Captive And Wild Diets Of Carnivores, Jill Den Outer, Bethany Janos, Elizabeth Mccourt, William Molair

Senior Theses

Specific to captive BFFs, the most significant changes in cranial morphology are related to an increase in zygomatic arch width. The zygomatic arch region is the area along which the masseter muscle (a critical muscle of mastication for carnivores) is stretched3 . Mechanical stability of muscular tissues has been shown to be closely related to the structural integrity of the surrounding bones. In mice, mechanical unloading of the hind legs has been shown to induce muscular atrophy, which led to increased porosity and fragmentation in the femur and tibia4. As less force is required for a captive ferret to fully …

Cost-Effective Monitoring Of Railroad Bridge Performance, Jose Alberto Gomez Romero Salazar May 2017

Cost-Effective Monitoring Of Railroad Bridge Performance, Jose Alberto Gomez Romero Salazar

Civil Engineering ETDs

The railroad network carries 40 % of the freight in the US. Railroad bridges are the most critical part of the network and they need to be properly maintained for safety of operations. Railroad managers need to inspect the bridges in order to assess their structural condition. Railroad managers are interested in measuring displacements under train crossing events to prioritize their bridge management and safety decisions. However, bridge displacements are difficult to collect in the field, because they require a fixed reference from where to measure. Accelerations can be used to estimate dynamic displacements but to this date, the pseudo-static …

Subcontracting And The Survival Of Plants In The Road Construction Industry: A Panel Quantile Regression Analysis, Dakshina G. De Silva, Georgia Kosmopoulou, Carlos Lamarche

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper investigates how subcontracting parts of contracted work shapes entrants’ success and survival. We find that newly developed quantile regression approaches can be adapted to study survival of firms competing for government contracts in road construction. The method is applied on a data set that includes patterns of firm entry, exit and auction related information. We find an apparent increase in the business life of firms who subcontract out part of their projects. In Texas, these subcontracting effects appear to be more pronounced for firms with few or no options outside the industry, and among firms who contract out …

Developing Hybrid Thickness-Accommodation Techniques For New Origami-Inspired Engineered Systems, Kyler Austin Tolman

Theses and Dissertations

Origami has become a source of inspiration in a number of engineered systems. In most systems, non-paper materials where material thickness is non-negligible is required. In origami-inspired engineered systems where thickness is non-negligible, thickness-accommodation techniques must be utilized to overcome the issue of self-intersection. Many thickness-accommodation techniques have been developed for use in thick-origami-inspired-engineered systems. In this work several thickness-accommodation techniques are reviewed and discussed. New thickness-accommodation techniques including hybrid thickness-accommodation techniques and the split vertex technique are presented and discussed. These techniques enable new capabilities of thickness-accommodation in origami adapted design. Thickness-accommodation techniques have been developed in the context …

Optical Imaging Of Metabolic Adaptability As A Biomarker For Metastatic Potential In Breast Cancer Cells, Mason G. Harper

Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Breast cancer metastasis is the main cause for mortality in breast cancer patients. However, knowledge of metastatic recurrence is limited, and there is a need to understand metastatic recurrence in order to treat breast cancer patients more effectively. Highly invasive metastatic breast cancer has shown to exhibit metabolic adaptability, transitioning from glycolysis to oxidative phosphorylation in the presence of microenvironmental stress. NADH and FAD are naturally occurring cofactor products during glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation, respectively, and they are of particular importance during these metabolic processes due to their endogenous fluorescence. Measuring the ratio of fluorescence intensities of these cofactors through …

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

Video transcoding is an essential tool to promote inter-operability between different video communication systems. This thesis presents a cascaded architecture for homogeneous transcoding of High Efficiency Video Coding. Cascaded Transcoding model decodes the input video sequence and follows the procedure of reference encoder, with the difference being a higher QP value. The encoder will code the sequence with the goal of achieving highest coding performance, and since the encoder is not restricted by any means, it is reasonable to assume that the coding performance is the best possible transcoding performance. H.265 is the latest video coding standard which supports encoding …

Dermal Uptake Of Phthalates From Clothing: Comparison Of Model To Human Participant Results, Glenn Morrison, C. J. Weschler, G. Bekö May 2017

Dermal Uptake Of Phthalates From Clothing: Comparison Of Model To Human Participant Results, Glenn Morrison, C. J. Weschler, G. Bekö

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this research, we extend a model of transdermal uptake of phthalates to include a layer of clothing. When compared with experimental results, this model better estimates dermal uptake of diethyl phthalate and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) than a previous model. The model predictions are consistent with the observation that previously exposed clothing can increase dermal uptake over that observed in bare-skin participants for the same exposure air concentrations. The model predicts that dermal uptake from clothing of DnBP is a substantial fraction of total uptake from all sources of exposure. For compounds that have high dermal permeability coefficients, dermal uptake …

The agricultural industry’s continued success is critical to our future. However, many agricultural practices—specifically rice farming—are currently based on unsustainable methods. The processes used in rice farming consume water at an unsupportable rate, and, consequently, are serious contributors to rising emission levels. Several alternative growing methods have been introduced, and one of the most promising candidates is Alternative Wetting and Drying (AWD). An obstacle encountered by proponents of these methods comes in implementation. Studies have shown AWD is more successful in fields with higher leveling precision. The research in this study works to create a stepping stone for farmers to …

A Quantitative Model For Truck Parking Utilization With Hours Of Service Regulations, Alexis Christine Gaddy May 2017

A Quantitative Model For Truck Parking Utilization With Hours Of Service Regulations, Alexis Christine Gaddy

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Continual growth in traffic volume on U.S. Highways and insufficient parking for commercial trucking vehicles has led to significant safety concerns for truck drivers. Hours of Service (HOS) regulations dictate driving and rest periods of truck drivers. When a truck driver must stop as designated by the HOS regulations and the nearest parking location is at capacity, the trucker must either continue driving past the HOS limit or park in an undesignated and possibly illegal or unsafe spot such as an off-ramp. The combination of these two variables play an important role in the safety of truck drivers on a …
