Thermal Optimization And Validation Of Gan High Electron Mobility Transistor, Tanmay Pradip Kavade
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Gallium Nitride (GaN) is a binary III/V wide band gap semiconductor used in power electronics for operations at high power densities and high speeds. GaN has excellent characteristics like high break-down voltage, high thermal conductivity, and high electron saturation velocity which have led to an intensive study and wide use of GaN in many fields. Some of these fields range from amplifiers, MMIC, laser diodes, pulsed radars and counter-IED jammers to CAT-V modules and fourth generation infrastructure base-stations. Currently GaN devices suffer from high temperature due to self-heating which reduces the mean time to failure. In this study package level …
Conjugate Heat Transfer And Thermo-Structural Analysis Of The Actively Cooled Multi-Stage Conical Nozzle And Hypersonic Low-Reynolds Diffuser Of The New Arc-Heated Wind Tunnel (Awht-Ii) Of The University Of Texas At Arlington, David Ray Campbell
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Arc-heated wind tunnels are the primary test facility for screening and qualification of candidate materials for hypersonic thermal protection systems (TPS). Via an electric arc that largely augments the enthalpy (by tens of MJ/kg) of the working fluid (Air, Nitrogen, CO2 in case of Mars-entry studies) passed through a converging-diverging nozzle at specific stagnation conditions, different regimes encountered in entry and re-entry hypersonic aerothermodynamics can be simulated. Because of the high-enthalpies (and associated temperatures that generally exceed the limits required by the thermo-structural integrity of the facility) the active cooling of the arc-heated wind tunnel’s parts exposed to the working …

Thermal Management Of High Power Multi Chip Module By Design Optimization Of Segregated Serpentine Flow Cold Plate, Krishna Chaitanya Siripurapu
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Data center environment cooling requirements became a challenge with rapid increasing microprocessor power densities which leads to non-uniform distribution of temperature. A practical cooling solution which relies on the segregated flow of cooling resources based on power density for thermal management of high power equipment is introduced. This minimizes energy consumption of cooling infrastructure. Performance of existing cold plate is previewed and amount of savings possible is shown from numerical analysis of segregated model. Model is designed by considering manufacturing feasibility to make samples for proposed solution for future experimental study. A multi-chip module is chosen as a base for …

Ag Nano-Dendritic Three-Dimensional (3d) Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (Sers) Substrate For In-Situ Liquid Media Detection, Milind Mansing Pawar
Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Continuous monitoring of certain environmental pollutants, biological species, chemical species, and explosives are of utmost importance in recent times. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) provides most promising option as it is a highly sensitive technique which allows for ultrasensitive detection of molecules and provides excellent structural information. To obtain rich results through Surface-enhanced Raman scattering, proper design of enhancing substrate plays vital role. Contemporary SERS substrates don’t provide ease to detect liquid analytes for in-situ spectroscopy. Liquid media detection through SERS relies on highly statistical binding of analytes to SERS-sensitive hot spots. Moreover, it becomes extremely difficult to detect flowing liquid …

Each year many patients die waiting for a transplant organ to become available. Increasing the available number of transplant organs would save lives. The donor pool could be expanded if organs which are considered to be of uncertain viability could be utilized for transplantation. Currently, when there is any doubt about the viability of the organ, it is discarded. This occurs because there has been no way to confirm its viability other than to transplant it and risk the life of the recipient. Thus, many organs that are in fact good are wasted. Some might not be fully viable but …

Response Of Unsaturated Soils Under Monotonic And Dynamic Loading Over Moderate Suction States, Aritra Banerjee
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
The understanding of the mechanical behavior of the unsaturated soils has been significantly enhanced due to the recent advancement of technology and modifications to the conventional testing devices. However, the implementation of the concepts of unsaturated soil has lagged, mainly due to the risks associated with the development of civil infrastructure based on practically untested theories and the limited reliable prediction methods for compacted, expansive, residual, and collapsible soils, which requires reliable and comprehensive experimental data. Moreover, the tests on unsaturated soils are enormously time consuming and often exorbitantly expensive, which further hinders the use of unsaturated soil mechanics in …

Performance Of Cement Treated Recycled Aggregates Under Wetting-Drying Cycles In Pavement Base, Saif Bin Salah
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Resilient Modulus (MR) is one of the most important stiffness parameter to determine the thickness of a pavement layer (AASHTO 2003 pavement design guideline). Recent studies conducted by researchers on the variability of MR with wetting-drying (WD) and freeze-thaw (FT) cycles show that long-term durability is an important criterion to be considered in designing pavement base with recycled materials. At present, the design procedure does not consider the effect of deterioration of pavement layers due to seasonal variations and limited studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of environmental deterioration on the reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled crushed …

Investigation Of Reuse Of Coal Fly Ash To Mitigate Landfill Methane Gas, Amin Homaei
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Methane (CH4) is a powerful greenhouse gas (GHG), contributing 32% of current climate forcing (US EPA, 2015). In 2014 the White House released the “Strategy to Cut Methane Emissions” as part of the Climate Action Plan. Landfills are one of the strategy’s 4 key sectors, contributing 18% of US methane emissions (US EPA, 2013). Even when landfills capture methane and burn it to produce electricity, around 25% of methane still leaks through landfill covers (US EPA, 2005). In natural environments, iron oxides, manganese oxides, nitrates, and sulfates have been shown to stimulate microbial anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) (Sivan et …

Application Of Strand-Cartesian Interfaced Solver On Flows Around Various Geometries, Yushi Yanagita
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This work examines the application of a high-order numerical method to strand-based grids to solve the Navier-Stokes equations. Coined "Flux Correction", this method eliminates error terms in the fluxes of traditional second-order finite volume Galerkin methods. Flux Correction is first examined for applications to the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations to compute turbulent flows on a strictly strand-based domain. Flow over three geometries are examined to demonstrate the method’s capabilities: a three-dimensional bump, an infinite wing, and a hemisphere-cylinder configuration. Comparison to results obtained from established codes show that the turbulent Flux Correction scheme accurately predicts flow properties such as pressure, velocity …

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNN) require millions of labeled training examples for image classification and object detection tasks, which restrict these models to domains where such a dataset is available. We explore the use of unsupervised sparse coding applied to stereo-video data to help alleviate the need for large amounts of labeled data. In this paper, we show that unsupervised sparse coding is able to learn disparity and motion sensitive basis functions when exposed to unlabeled stereo-video data. Additionally, we show that a DCNN that incorporates unsupervised learning exhibits better performance than fully supervised networks. Furthermore, finding a sparse representation …

Besides amplitude, phase and polarization, wavefront is an important property of electromagnetic (EM) waves. EM waves with twisted wavefronts are known to carry orbital angular momentum (OAM). In this paper, a complementary-type metasurface is proposed to generate an OAM beam at microwave regime. Two metasurfaces that can produce OAM of order 2 and 4 are designed. By using our novel design methods, which are based on circuit model and dyadic Green's function, a high conversion efficiency has been achieved with a very low profile.
Design And Evaluation Of Modified Centerline Rumble Strips, Yong-Rak Kim, Tae Sun You, Laurence Rilett
Design And Evaluation Of Modified Centerline Rumble Strips, Yong-Rak Kim, Tae Sun You, Laurence Rilett
Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports
A centerline rumble strip (CLRS) is primarily installed on the centerline of undivided two-lane and two-way roadways to alert drivers that they are moving out of their intended travel lane. The main purpose of CLRSs is to reduce crossover collisions typically caused by inattentive, distracted, drowsy, or fatigued drivers. Despite the safety benefits, CLRSs that were milled over or adjacent to the centerline joint may increase or accelerate the deterioration and degradation of the pavement structure, which has been observed in Nebraska pavements. In this research project, new (or modified) CLRS designs were sought to reduce pavement damage, while satisfying …

Numerical And Analytical Study Of Curvature Effects In Laminar Shock Wave/Boundary Layer Interactions, James Ray Grisham
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Shock wave/boundary-layer interactions (SBLIs) are one of the most complex flow phenomena because of the different types of physics involved (i.e., viscous versus inviscid) and their side effects such as boundary layer separation and extreme localized heating. Control surfaces based on compliant mechanisms are becoming a reality and introduce an additional variable into the already complex SBLI, namely surface curvature. The purpose of the present work is to systematically study the effects of surface curvature on laminar, ramp-induced SBLIs. This is accomplished using numerical and theoretical approaches in the form of numerical solutions to the compressible Navier–Stokes equations and triple-deck …

Aggregates, which are derived from natural resources, are the most important raw materials used in pavement construction; however, depletion of the natural resources, increasing labor costs, and environmental concerns have led us to look for alternatives. Recycled materials, such as recycled crushed concrete aggregate (RCCA) and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), can be used as an alternative to natural aggregates and can be obtained from construction of newer structures and demolition of existing structures, such as buildings, bridges, pavement, etc. Recycled materials can reduce the cost, depletion of natural resources, and construction debris. The properties of recycled materials are source-dependent, which …

Heat removal from microprocessor chips with multiple regions of dynamic heat generation remains a critical technological challenge. Excessive temperature rise is undesirable for performance as well as reliability. Jet impingement cooling has been widely investigated as a potential thermal management technique due to the capability of localized cooling and of dynamically following the heat generation distribution. A jet offers large local convective heat transfer coefficient, for which theoretical models and correlations have been proposed for a variety of scenarios. However, not much work exists on using this information to determine the resulting temperature distribution. This work addresses this need by …
