Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research
A groundwater system model was developed and calibrated in the study area of Lehman Creek watershed, eastern Nevada. The model development aims for integrating the surface hydrologic model - precipitation runoff modeling system (PRMS) model - with the three-dimensional (3D) finite-difference model MODFLOW. A two-layer groundwater model was developed with spatial discretization of 100 x 100 m grid. The water balance was estimated with inflows of gravity drainage and initial streamflow estimated from a calibrated PRMS model, and with outflows of spring discharges, boundary fluxes, and stream base flow. A steady-state model calibration was performed to estimate the hydraulic properties. …

River ice cover is a reoccurring phenomenon in the Northern United States every year. Sheets and layers of ice result in a rise of water surface elevation and may lead to ice jams in a river. This research explains the modeling of a river reach through Northern Illinois containing a structural weir and how the water profile is effected during ice cover and ice jam events. The Hydraulic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System was used in conjunction with Esri ArcMap software to model a portion of the river for analysis. The study area of the Rock River flowing through Oregon, …

El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) are two of the most important climate indices that influence the western U.S. hydrology significantly. This study evaluated how these two indices have influenced California streamflow over the years and determined their correlation at multiple time-scales. Data were obtained from 14 unimpaired streamflow stations of California for a study period of 63 years (i.e., 1951 to 2013). The concept of continuous wavelet transform was applied to observe the variance in each time-series at multiple time-scale bands over the years. The correlation was found to be higher in the latter half …

The trend and shift in the seasonal temperature, precipitation and streamflow time series across the Midwest have been analyzed, for the period 1960-2013, using the statistical analyses (Mann- Kendall test with and without considering short term persistence (MK2 and MK1, respectively) and Pettitt test). The paper also utilizes a relatively new approach, wavelet analysis, for testing the existence of trend and shift in the time series. The method has the ability to decompose a time series in to lower (trend) and higher frequency components (noise). Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) has been employed in the present study with an aim to …

An Improved Algorithm For Learning To Perform Exception-Tolerant Abduction, Mengxue Zhang
An Improved Algorithm For Learning To Perform Exception-Tolerant Abduction, Mengxue Zhang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Abstract
Inference from an observed or hypothesized condition to a plausible cause or explanation for this condition is known as abduction. For many tasks, the acquisition of the necessary knowledge by machine learning has been widely found to be highly effective. However, the semantics of learned knowledge are weaker than the usual classical semantics, and this necessitates new formulations of many tasks. We focus on a recently introduced formulation of the abductive inference task that is thus adapted to the semantics of machine learning. A key problem is that we cannot expect that our causes or explanations will be perfect, …

The Impact Of The Mitochondrial Metabolism Of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells Upon Differentiation, Stefanie T. Shahan
The Impact Of The Mitochondrial Metabolism Of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells Upon Differentiation, Stefanie T. Shahan
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) can be differentiated into any cell type found in the body. The derivation of a stem cell derived β cell (SC-β) capable of responding to glucose by secreting insulin was hugely significant for diabetes research and opened up the possibility of cell replacement therapy to combat this widespread disease (Pagliuca et al. 2014). The optimization of differentiation procedures such as this could improve yield, function, cost, and efficiency of a stem cell-derived product. Current approaches to improve differentiation are primarily focused on signal transduction pathways, while the metabolic state of the cells has received little …

Schedule And Cost Performance Analysis And Prediction In Louisiana Dotd, Mahmoud Hamide
Schedule And Cost Performance Analysis And Prediction In Louisiana Dotd, Mahmoud Hamide
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Many construction projects in the United States are facing the risk of cost overrun and schedule delays. This is also happening here in the State of Louisiana. When these things happen, it causes cost overrun which can then be passed on to the tax payers and may also cause the state to take on less projects than they normal. Many researchers have studied the reasons behind both the cost overrun and the delays resulting in private firms, developing project management tools and best practices to prevent this risk. In this research, I aim to study the historical trend in 2912 …

Dropped objects are among the top ten causes of fatalities and serious injuries in the oil and gas industry. Objects may be dropped during lifting or any other offshore operation. Concerns of health, safety, and the environment (HSE) as well as possible damages to structures require the prediction of where and how a dropped object moves underwater. This study of dropped objects is subdivided into three parts. In the first part, the experimental and simulated results published by Aanesland (1987) have been successfully reproduced and validated based on a two-dimensional (2D) theory for a dropped drilling pipe model. A new …

Improving A Particle Swarm Optimization-Based Clustering Method, Sharif Shahadat
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis discusses clustering related works with emphasis on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) principles. Specifically, we review in detail the PSO clustering algorithm proposed by Van Der Merwe & Engelbrecht, the particle swarm clustering (PSC) algorithm proposed by Cohen & de Castro, Szabo’s modified PSC (mPSC), and Georgieva & Engelbrecht’s Cooperative-Multi-Population PSO (CMPSO). In this thesis, an improvement over Van Der Merwe & Engelbrecht’s PSO clustering has been proposed and tested for standard datasets. The improvements observed in those experiments vary from slight to moderate, both in terms of minimizing the cost function, and in terms of run time.

Determination Of Single Pole Breaker Reclose Time And System Performance Using Real Time Simulation, Venkata Sridivya Godavarthi
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates single pole reclosing in series capacitor compensated line. An algorithm is developed to determine the optimal dead time required for single pole reclose of circuit breakers and to reduce the randomness of reclosing time. The algorithm considers conditions of system, fault, voltage zero crossing, arc, and IEEE C37.104-2012 standard de-ionization time. This study also addresses difficulties of single pole reclose operation such as over-voltages at the line, secondary arc extinguishing time, dead time, over-voltages across the series capacitor, and negative sequence current. The system performance is evaluated using a set of metrics based on those operation difficulties. …

An Experimental Study In The Hydroelastic Response Of An Aluminum Wedge In Drop Tests, Jonathan R. Eastridge
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Slamming of marine planing craft is expected to arise due to the high speed nature of their operating conditions. High hydrodynamic forces are inevitably induced causing the shell plating to deflect, which in turn can influence the flow physics surrounding the hull. In order to study the hull’s hydroelastic response due to a slamming event, wedge drop experiments were performed with an aluminum wedge of 57 inches in length, 47 inches in breadth, and 20 degree deadrise with 1/4 in. thick unstiffened bottom panels. The elastic behavior of the hull plating was measured via two methods. The first method uses …

Embedded Processors On Fpga: Hard-Core Vs Soft-Core, Vivek J. Vazhoth Kanhiroth
Embedded Processors On Fpga: Hard-Core Vs Soft-Core, Vivek J. Vazhoth Kanhiroth
Masters Theses
Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are integrated circuits (ICs) that can be reprogrammed by the consumer after manufacturing. They are based on a matrix of configurable logic blocks connected via programmable interconnects that enables the designer to quickly recreate hardware circuits. In the past, FPGAs were primarily used for prototyping and debugging purposes. However, with their increased popularity, many commercial products now incorporate FPGAs.
In the late 1990s, FPGA vendors introduced System-on-chip (SoC) devices that housed one or more hard-core processors and an FPGA fabric on a single IC to allow for more complex designs that involved hardware and software …
Numerical Determination Of Critical Mach Number Of A Three-Element Airfoil In Unbounded Flow And In Ground Effect, Bowen Hu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The critical Mach number is an important property of airfoils on aerodynamics. When the freestream Mach number exceeds the critical Mach number, shock will appear on the aircraft and cause a huge loss of energy. Lift decreases sharply and drag increases dramatically. We usually hope to increase the critical Mach number and delay the occurrence of shock so that the aircraft can fly with a higher speed and carry more weight.
In this thesis, the main task is to determine the critical Mach number of multi-element airfoil 30P30N in unbounded flow and in ground effect. Commercial software ICEM is employed …

Design And Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis Of An Idealized Modern Wingsuit, Maria E. Ferguson
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The aerodynamics of a modern wingsuit has been the subject of very few detailed scientific studies to date. The prevailing design process remains the dangerous “sew and fly” method, in which designs are tested when they are first flown. This study utilizes Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools to analyze the flow field and aerodynamics of an idealized wingsuit, which is designed using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) modeling. The 3D CAD software Autodesk Inventor is used to create the wingsuit model, which is designed with a Gottingen 228 airfoil cross-section and a relatively large planform of aspect ratio 1.3. The commercial flow …
Uncertainty Quantification Of Turbulence Model Closure Coefficients On Openfoam And Fluent For Mildly Separated Flows, Ike Witte
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, detailed uncertainty quantification studies focusing on the closure coefficients of eddy-viscosity turbulence models for several flows using two CFD solvers have been performed. Three eddy viscosity turbulence models considered are: the one-equation Spalart-Allmaras (SA) model, the two-equation Shear Stress Transport (SST) k-ω model, and the one-equation Wray-Agarwal (WA) model. OpenFOAM and ANSYS Fluent are used as flow solvers. Uncertainty quantification analyses are performed for subsonic flow over a flat plate, subsonic flow over a backward-facing step, and transonic flow past an axisymmetric bump. In the case of flat plate, coefficients of pressure, lift, drag, and skin friction …
