A Current-Dependent Switching Strategy For Si/Sic Hybrid Switch-Based Power Converters, Jiangbiao He, Ramin Katebi, Nathan Weise

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Abstract: Hybrid switches configured by paralleling Silicon (Si) Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT) and Silicon Carbide (SiC) Metal-Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFET) have been verified to be a high-efficiency cost-effective device concept. In this paper, a current-dependent switching strategy is introduced and implemented to further improve the performance of Si/SiC hybrid switches. This proposed switching strategy is based on a comprehensive consideration of reducing device losses, reliable operation, and overload capability. Based on the utilization of such Si/SiC hybrid switches and the proposed switching strategy, a 15-kW single-phase H-bridge inverter prototype was implemented and tested in the laboratory. Simulation and …

Observing Orbital Angular Momentum Transfer From Electron Vortex Beams To Matter, Hannah Devyldere May 2017

Observing Orbital Angular Momentum Transfer From Electron Vortex Beams To Matter, Hannah Devyldere

Senior Theses

It is possible to produce electron beams with non-zero orbital angular momentum. Such beams, known as electron vortex beams, are theoretically able to transfer their orbital angular momenta to matter, causing the matter to rotate. Nanoparticles in an aqueous solution were observed with an electron vortex beam to detect the transfer of orbital angular momentum in a low-friction environment. Observing the transfer of orbital angular momentum to particles in solution is difficult due to the necessity of imaging the particles through a liquid and the random movement of particles in the solution. Thus, orbital angular momentum transfer to matter could …

Adsorption Processes For Co2 Capture: An Overview, Paul Webley, Ranjeet Singh, Penny Xiao

CO2 Summit III: Pathways to Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage Deployment

Adsorption processes for CO2 capture have gained significant attention in the last decade with hundreds of reports on new adsorbents and processes for capture and removal of carbon dioxide from a range of gas streams. To date, the only commercial examples are removal of trace carbon dioxide in gas streams such as LNG and ASU upstream molecular sieve units. There are no commercial examples of the use of adsorbents to capture carbon dioxide by adsorption processes and deliver a stream of high purity carbon dioxide for sequestration or further processing. In this study, we present the range of processing options …

Development Of Geospatial And Temporal Characteristics For Hispaniola’S Lake Azuei And Enriquillo Using Landsat Imagery, Mahrokh Moknatian, Michael Piasecki, Jorge Gonzalez

Publications and Research

In this paper, we used Landsat imagery for water body identification to create a novel 36-year surface area extent time series for lakes Azuei (Haiti) and Enriquillo (Dominican Republic) aimed at illuminating the dramatic temporal changes of these two lakes not just at yearly but at monthly or even sub-monthly scales. We used the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) to extract water features and we also used spatial differentiation and thresholding techniques to remove clouds and associated shadows from the scene that were then passed through gap filling algorithms to complete and extract the lake extent polygons. We also explored …

Exploiting On-Chip Voltage Regulators As A Countermeasure Against Power Analysis Attacks, Weize Yu May 2017

Exploiting On-Chip Voltage Regulators As A Countermeasure Against Power Analysis Attacks, Weize Yu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Non-invasive side-channel attacks (SCA) are powerful attacks which can be used to obtain the secret key in a cryptographic circuit in feasible time without the need for expensive measurement equipment. Power analysis attacks (PAA) are a type of SCA that exploit the correlation between the leaked power consumption information and processed/stored data. Differential power analysis (DPA) and leakage power analysis (LPA) attacks are two types of PAA that exploit different characteristics of the side-channel leakage profile. DPA attacks exploit the correlation between the input data and dynamic power consumption of cryptographic circuits. Alternatively, LPA attacks utilize the correlation between the …

Investigation Into Effects Of Instability And Reactivity Of Hydride-Passivated Silicon Nanoparticles On Interband Photoluminescence, Christine Marie Radlinger May 2017

Investigation Into Effects Of Instability And Reactivity Of Hydride-Passivated Silicon Nanoparticles On Interband Photoluminescence, Christine Marie Radlinger

Dissertations and Theses

While silicon has long been utilized for its electronic properties, its use as an optical material has largely been limited due to the poor efficiency of interband transitions. However, discovery of visible photoluminescence (PL) from nanocrystalline silicon in 1990 triggered many ensuing research efforts to optimize PL from nanocrystalline silicon for optical applications. Currently, use of photoluminescent silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) is commercially limited by: 1) the instability of the energy and intensity of the PL, and 2) the low quantum yield of interband PL from Si NPs.

Herein, red-emitting, hydrogen-passivated silicon nanoparticles (H-Si NPs) were synthesized by thermally-induced disproportionation …

Journal of Undergraduate Research

An estimated 20 million adults (approximately 10% of all individuals over the age of 18) in the United States suffer from some level of chronic kidney disease (CKD), making CKD the 9th leading cause of death in the United States (1). The only successful treatment for end-stage renal failure is transplantation from a donor with similar blood antigen makeup, while living the remainder of their lives receiving immunosuppressive therapy. Unfortunately, individuals awaiting a kidney transplant outnumber viable donations. Scientists have been tasked with discovering and developing methods to answer this growing need. One promising method is the decellularization of porcine …

Continuous Ethanol Production From Synthesis Gas By Clostridium Ragsdalei In A Trickle-Bed Reactor, Mamatha Devarapalli, Randy S. Lewis, Hasan K. Atiyeh

Faculty Publications

A trickle-bed reactor (TBR) when operated in a trickle flow regime reduces liquid resistance to mass transfer because a very thin liquid film is in contact with the gas phase and results in improved gas–liquid mass transfer compared to continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTRs). In the present study, continuous syngas fermentation was performed in a 1-L TBR for ethanol production by Clostridium ragsdalei. The effects of dilution and gas flow rates on product formation, productivity, gas uptakes and conversion efficiencies were examined. Results showed that CO and H2 conversion efficiencies reached over 90% when the gas flow rate was maintained …

Evaluation Of The Efficiency Of An Arm-Based Beowulf Cluster Versus Traditional Desktop Computing For High Performance Computing, Nicholas Addiego

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In the realm of scientific computing, it has become increasingly important to focus on results driven growth (Kamil, Shalf and Storhmaier). Doing this enables researchers to continue building the rapidly expanding area of scientific discovery. However, with the growth comes a cost of the amount of resources consumed to accomplish these results. Large supercomputers are consuming power at a rate roughly fourteen thousand times that of a traditional American household (U.S. Energy Information Administration). Parallel to this, public consumers have been driving the mobile industry and the research behind it. The need to have faster and faster mobile devices that …

Nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) assemble a large group of structurally and functionally diverse natural products. While the iterative catalytic mechanism of bacterial NRPSs is known, it remains unclear how fungal NRPSs create products of desired length. Here we show that fungal iterative NRPSs adopt an alternate incorporation strategy. Beauvericin and bassianolide synthetases have the same C1-A1-T1-C2-A2-MT-T2a-T2b-C3 domain organization. During catalysis, C3 and C2 take turns to incorporate the two biosynthetic precursors into the growing depsipeptide chain that swings between T1 and T …

Semiconductor Technology for Ultra-Large Scale Integrated Circuits and Thin Film Transistors VI (ULSIC vs TFT 6)

Artificial intelligences are promising as key technologies in future societies. However, the conventional ones are executed using complicated software on high-specked hardware, and the machine size is very bulky and power consumption is unbelievably huge. Therefore, we are investigating "braintype integrated system", namely, neural network built only by hardware, which can be compact, low power, robust, and integrated on everything in future. In order to realize that system, simplification of the processing elements, such as neurons and synapse, three-dimensional structure, and low cost fabrication are required. We have succeeded in that simplification and are trying to utilize oxide semiconductors for …

Cost-Effective, Near-Term Deployment Of Carbon Capture And Storage From Biorefineries In The United States, Daniel L. Sanchez, Nils Johnson, Sean Mccoy

CO2 Summit III: Pathways to Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage Deployment

Abstract: Capture and permanent sequestration of biogenic CO2 emissions play a pivotal role in stringent climate change mitigation. Bioenergy with carbon capture and sequestration (BECCS) technologies, in particular, can remove atmospheric CO2 emissions while producing valuable energy products such as fuels, electricity, and gaseous hydrocarbons. Yet, most near-term assessments of climate change mitigation opportunities assume BECCS is either too costly or commercially unavailable. In contrast, biogenic CO2 capture and sequestration from industrial fermentation is already deployed at commercial scale, including several corn ethanol facilities in the United States. Such capture opportunities target pure streams of biogenic CO2 from existing biofuel …
