A Patch-Resonator-Based Butler Matrix With New Triangular Phase Shifters, Xianshi Jing, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Sheng Sun, Lei Zhu Oct 2016

A Patch-Resonator-Based Butler Matrix With New Triangular Phase Shifters, Xianshi Jing, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Sheng Sun, Lei Zhu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a new novel patch based Butler Matrix using 3-dB square-patch coupler and triangular-patch wideband phase shifter is presented. By inserting a via hole along the symmetrical plane of the triangular patch, the bandwidth of the transmitting response is significantly increased. In order to obtain a 45° phase difference and a wideband phase response, a reference line with high characteristic impedance is applied and the length of the feeding line for the triangular-patch structure is adjusted correspondingly. As an application, a patch-based Butler Matrix is designed and fabricated around 4 GHz. The measured patch-based Butler Matrix shows a …

A Highly Tunable Sub-Wavelength Chiral Structure For Circular Polarizer, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha, Tatsuo Itoh Oct 2016

A Highly Tunable Sub-Wavelength Chiral Structure For Circular Polarizer, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha, Tatsuo Itoh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Chiral structures are composed of periodically arranged asymmetric particles. The asymmetry of chiral particles results in extraordinary properties like negative refraction index, giant optical activity and circular dichroism. Consequently, they have applications in super lens and various polarization controllers. There are two types of chiral structures, namely planar and 3D structures. The planar ones usually have three- or fourfold rotational symmetry, which limits the polarization tuning capability. On the other hand, the 3D prototypes are difficult to fabricate and measure. Here, we propose a highly tunable sub-wavelength 3D chiral structure. It can be conveniently manufactured on the single-layer double-side printed …

Finite-Difference Time-Domain Simulation Of The Maxwell-Schrödinger System, Christopher Ryu, Aiyin Liu, Weng C. Chew, Wei Sha, Lijun Jiang Oct 2016

Finite-Difference Time-Domain Simulation Of The Maxwell-Schrödinger System, Christopher Ryu, Aiyin Liu, Weng C. Chew, Wei Sha, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A thorough study on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation of the Maxwell-Schrödinger system in the semi-classical regime is given. For the Maxwell part which is treated classically, an alternative approach directly using the vector and scalar potentials (A and Φ) is taken. This approach is stable in the long wavelength regime and removes the need to extract the potentials at every time step. Perfectly matched layer (PML) is developed for this system. For the Schrödinger and quantum mechanical part, minimal coupling is applied to couple the charges to the electromagnetic potentials. Simulation results agree with the theory of quantum coherent …

Network Forensic Investigation Of Internal Misuse/Crime In Saudi Arabia: A Hacking Case, Abdulrazaq Al-Murjan, Konstantinos Xynos Oct 2016

Network Forensic Investigation Of Internal Misuse/Crime In Saudi Arabia: A Hacking Case, Abdulrazaq Al-Murjan, Konstantinos Xynos

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

There are ad-hoc guidelines and a limited policy on computer incident response that does not include computer forensic preparation procedures (e.g. logging incidents). In addition, these guidelines do not consider the requirement of Islamic law for admissible evidence at an organisational level in Saudi Arabia. Network forensic investigation might breach the Saudi law if they follow ad-hoc or international digital forensic standards such as Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) guidelines. This might put the organisation in a costly situation when a malicious employee sues an Islamic court. This is because the law of Saudi Arabia is complying with Islamic …

E. Coli Removal By Pleurotus Ostreatus Mycofilter In Simulated Wet Environmental Pond, Savannah E. Martinez

Civil Engineering ETDs

Stormwater runoff has been referred to as the water quality issue of the day. Contamination of surface waters is an environmental concern for both human and ecosystem health. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, it is a common practice to pond stormwater runoff before it is released into the Rio Grande. Ponding stormwater works as a best management practice (BMP) to help remove floatable debris and contaminants. Mycofiltration is a BMP that has recently been introduced into the stormwater quality community. Mycofiltration is the use of fungal mycelium as a natural mitigation approach to stormwater pollution. Mycofiltration has been proven to reduce …

Evolution From The Plasmon To Exciton State In Ligand-Protected Atomically Precise Gold Nanoparticles, Meng Zhou, Chenjie Zeng, Yuxiang Chen, Shuo Zhao, Matthew Y. Sfeir, Manzhou Zhu, Rongchao Jin

Publications and Research

The evolution from the metallic (or plasmonic) to molecular state in metal nanoparticles constitutes a central question in nanoscience research because of its importance in revealing the origin of metallic bonding and offering fundamental insights into the birth of surface plasmon resonance. Previous research has not been able to probe the transition due to the unavailability of atomically precise nanoparticles in the 1-3 nm size regime. Herein, we investigate the transition by performing ultrafast spectroscopic studies on atomically precise thiolate-protected Au25, Au38, Au144, Au333, Au∼520 and Au∼940 nanoparticles. Our results …

Making Scholarly Activity Available To The Masses: The Scaffolding Of Scholarship Throughout The Undergraduate Curriculum, Michael Savarese, Trent R. Brown, Carolyn Culbertson, Anna Carlin

Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research

Florida Gulf Coast University’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) focuses on improving student critical thinking, information literacy, and written communication. Rather than developing these skills through traditional methods (e.g., through senior-level, independent research), these learning outcomes are practiced through scholarly experiences. Traditional undergraduate scholarship manifests itself through terminal, senior capstone or research experiences. These, because of the economy of scale, typically reach a minority of students, often just honors students or those approached by faculty mentors. At FGCU, however, scholarly experiences are a part of the curriculum throughout the program of study, and scaffolded to build greater depth and sophistication. Presented …

A New Multiple Access Wiretap Channel Model, Mohamed Nafea, Aylin Yener Oct 2016

A New Multiple Access Wiretap Channel Model, Mohamed Nafea, Aylin Yener

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new model for the two-user multiple-access wiretap channel is considered. In this model, the legitimate (main) channel is a discrete memoryless channel (DMC), and the wiretapper chooses a fixed-length subset of the channel uses where she has perfect access to the transmitted symbols of both users, while observing the remainder of the transmitted codewords through a second DMC. As such, it generalizes the existing multiple-access wiretap channel models and extends the recently proposed new wiretap channel model to a multiple access setting. An achievable strong secrecy rate region for the model is derived. The achievability is established by solving …

Feasibility Study Of Land Cover Classification Based On Normalized Difference Vegetation Index For Landslide Risk Assessment, Thilanki Dahigamuwa, Qiuyan Yu, Manjriker Gunaratne Oct 2016

Feasibility Study Of Land Cover Classification Based On Normalized Difference Vegetation Index For Landslide Risk Assessment, Thilanki Dahigamuwa, Qiuyan Yu, Manjriker Gunaratne

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Unfavorable land cover leads to excessive damage from landslides and other natural hazards, whereas the presence of vegetation is expected to mitigate rainfall-induced landslide potential. Hence, unexpected and rapid changes in land cover due to deforestation would be detrimental in landslide-prone areas. Also, vegetation cover is subject to phenological variations and therefore, timely classification of land cover is an essential step in effective evaluation of landslide hazard potential. The work presented here investigates methods that can be used for land cover classification based on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), derived from up-to-date satellite images, and the feasibility of application …

Global Ocean Particulate Organic Carbon Flux Merged With Satellite Parameters, Colleen B. Mouw, Audrey Barnett, Galen A. Mckinley, Lucas Gloege, Darren Pilcher

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Particulate organic carbon (POC) flux estimated from POC concentration observations from sediment traps and 234 Th are compiled across the global ocean. The compilation includes six time series locations: CARIACO, K2, OSP, BATS, OFP, and HOT. Efficiency of the biological pump of carbon to the deep ocean depends largely on biologically mediated export of carbon from the surface ocean and its remineralization with depth; thus biologically related parameters able to be estimated from satellite observations were merged at the POC observation sites. Satellite parameters include net primary production, percent microplankton, sea surface temperature, photosynthetically active radiation, diffuse attenuation coefficient at …

Protocol Guided Trace Analysis For Post-Silicon Debug Under Limited Observability, Yuting Cao Cao

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis considers the problem of reconstructing system level behavior of an SoC design from a partially observed signal trace. Solving this problem is a critical activity in post-silicon validation, and currently depends primarily on human creativity and insights. In this thesis, we provide algorithms to automatically infer system level flows from incomplete, ambiguous, and noisy trace data. This thesis also demonstrates the approach on two case studies, a multicore SoC model developed within the within the GEM5 environment, and a cycle accurate register transfer level model of a similar SoC design.

Comparing Machine Learning And Logistic Regression Methods For Predicting Hypertension Using A Combination Of Gene Expression And Next-Generation Sequencing Data, Elizabeth Held, Joshua Cape, Nathan L. Tintle

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

Machine learning methods continue to show promise in the analysis of data from genetic association studies because of the high number of variables relative to the number of observations. However, few best practices exist for the application of these methods. We extend a recently proposed supervised machine learning approach for predicting disease risk by genotypes to be able to incorporate gene expression data and rare variants. We then apply 2 different versions of the approach (radial and linear support vector machines) to simulated data from Genetic Analysis Workshop 19 and compare performance to logistic regression. Method performance was not radically …
