Methodology For Simulation And Analysis Of Complex Adaptive Supply Network Structure And Dynamics Using Information Theory, Joshua V. Rodewald, John M. Colombi, Kyle F. Oyama, Alan W. Johnson

Faculty Publications

Supply networks existing today in many industries can behave as complex adaptive systems making them more difficult to analyze and assess. Being able to fully understand both the complex static and dynamic structures of a complex adaptive supply network (CASN) are key to being able to make more informed management decisions and prioritize resources and production throughout the network. Previous efforts to model and analyze CASN have been impeded by the complex, dynamic nature of the systems. However, drawing from other complex adaptive systems sciences, information theory provides a model-free methodology removing many of those barriers, especially concerning complex network …

Levitating Libraries To The Clouds: A Strategy For Academic Libraries, Mark Dehmlow Oct 2016

Levitating Libraries To The Clouds: A Strategy For Academic Libraries, Mark Dehmlow

Charleston Library Conference

The University of Notre Dame’s Office of Information Technology is in the process of implementing a “Cloud First” strategy through which it intends to move 80% of its core technical infrastructure into the cloud by the end of 2017. The strategy advocates a tiered prioritization structure that recommends the hosting (SaaS) model for most services, the AWS (IaaS) model for fewer services, and finally on premises for a handful of the remaining services. As a campus technology partner, the Hesburgh Libraries has begun planning for moving many of our services and infrastructure into the cloud. This initiative represents a radical …

Paper Session Ii: Computer Forensics Field Triage Process Model, Marcus K. Rogers, James Goldman, Rick Mislan, Timothy Wedge, Steve Debrota

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

With the proliferation of digital based evidence, the need for the timely identification, analysis and interpretation of digital evidence is becoming more crucial. In many investigations critical information is required while at the scene or within a short period of time - measured in hours as opposed to days. The traditional cyber forensics approach of seizing a system(s)/media, transporting it to the lab, making a forensic image(s), and then searching the entire system for potential evidence, is no longer appropriate in some circumstances. In cases such as child abductions, pedophiles, missing or exploited persons, time is of the essence. In …

Can Flight Data Recorder Memory Be Stored On The Cloud?, Yair Wiseman

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Flight data recorders (FDRs, or black boxes) generate data that is collected on an embedded memory device. A well-known difficulty with these devices is that the embedded memory device runs out of space. To avoid getting into this problematic situation, the software of the FDR is designed to operate in a watchful mode, constantly working to minimize the use of memory space; otherwise a larger FDR would be needed. However, larger FDRs can be a problem because they have very rigorous requirements; thus, enlargement is costly. Outcomes of this research include the recommendation to send FDR data to a remote …

Can You Spot the Scam?

Scams make great stories. Tales of Internet crime or other fraud make up some of Hollywood's most exciting thrillers. While cybercrime blockbusters are fun to watch on the big screen, cybercrime is a serious problem on campuses globally.

How many people do you know who are the victim of a scam (Internet or phone)? According to the FBI, cybercrime is a growing threat that affects individuals and businesses around the world. A recent Washington Post article reported that cybercrime cost the global economy $445 billion in 2014.

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Metal electrodes are a universal element of all electronic devices. Conducting SrRuO3 (SRO) epitaxial thin films have been extensively used as electrodes in complex-oxide heterostructures due to good lattice mismatches with perovskite substrates. However, when compared to SRO single crystals, SRO thin films have shown reduced conductivity and Curie temperatures (TC), which can lead to higher Joule heating and energy loss in the devices. Here, we report that high-quality SRO thin films can be synthesized by controlling the plume dynamics and growth rate of pulsed laser epitaxy (PLE) with real-time optical spectroscopic monitoring. The SRO thin …

Occupancy Estimation In Smart Building Using Hybrid Co2/Light Wireless Sensor Network, Chen Mao, Qian Huang

ASA Multidisciplinary Research Symposium

Smart building, which delivers useful services to residents at lowest cost and maximum comfort, has gained increasing attention in recent years. A variety of emerging information technologies have been adopted in modern buildings, such as wireless sensor networks, internet of things, big data analytics, deep machine learning, etc. Most people agree that a smart building should be energy efficient, and consequently, much more affordable to building owners. Building operation accounts for major portion of energy consumption in the United States. HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) equipment is a particularly expensive and energy consuming of building operation. As a result, …

Published in Creating Tomorrow – Oct. 15, 2016 – When it comes right down to it, scientists and environmental engineers will tell you that nearly every ecosystem on Earth is driven by one simple thing: temperature.

Oceans, rivers, forests and deserts are a product of the chemical and biological processes that depend on a predictable mix of hot and cold. Even in the Arctic, where shallow soils are frozen most of the year, tiny variations in temperature can impact entire regions.

Mechnical Strength And Durability Of Alkali-Activated Fly Ash/Slag Concrete, Maochieh Chi Oct 2016

Mechnical Strength And Durability Of Alkali-Activated Fly Ash/Slag Concrete, Maochieh Chi

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study investigated the mechanical strength and durability of alkali-activated binders composed of blends of fly ash (FA) and ground granulated blast furnace slag. Five samples with FA/slag ratios of 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75, and 0/100 by mass were employed to prepare alkali-activated FA/slag (AAFS) concrete. Sodium oxide (Na2O) concentrations of 6% and 8% of binder weight and activator modulus ratios (mass ratio of SiO2 to Na2O) of 0.8, 1.0, and 1.23 were used to prepare alkaline activators. Test results revealed that higher slag contents, Na2O concentrations, and activator modulus ratios increased the compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of …

Effects Of Power System Stabilizer On Damping Of Inter-Area Oscillation Using Remote Signal, Van-Dien Doan, Ta-Hsiu Tseng, Pei-Hwa Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The inter-area oscillations in large interconnected power systems often have features of being low-frequency, lightly damped, and affecting relatively more generating units located in multiple areas. They restrict the allowable power flow on tielines and may lead to unexpected contingencies if it is not to be in proper observation. The main objective of this paper is to present a small signal stability analysis applied to Vietnam Power System which is a longitudinal network structure with the consideration of Power System Stabilizers (PSS) in operation to enhance the damping of inter-area oscillation by using local as well as remote feedback signals …
