Response Of A Doublet To A Nearby Dc Electrode Of Uniform Potential, Christopher L. Wirth, Sri Harsha Nuthalapati Oct 2016

Response Of A Doublet To A Nearby Dc Electrode Of Uniform Potential, Christopher L. Wirth, Sri Harsha Nuthalapati

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The electric-field-assisted directed assembly of spherical colloidal particles near an electrode has been studied for nearly three decades. Recently, focus has shifted to the electric-field-assisted assembly and propulsion of nonspherical (i.e., anisotropic) particles. This paper describes calculations and results for a doublet of asymmetric ζ potential and size responding to a dc electric field. The doublet experienced a net vertical force that depended on both the asymmetry in ζ potential and lobe size. In addition, the doublet experienced a net lateral force perpendicular to the applied electric field. The lateral force depended on the difference in ζ potential of the …

Gait And Tremor Assessment For Patients With Parkinson’S Disease Using Wearable Sensors, Shyam V. Perumal, Ravi Sankar Oct 2016

Gait And Tremor Assessment For Patients With Parkinson’S Disease Using Wearable Sensors, Shyam V. Perumal, Ravi Sankar

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Typically, subjects with Parkinson’s disease (PD) display instances of tremor at an early stage of the disease and later on develop gait impairments and postural instability. In this research, we have investigated the effect of using both gait and tremor features for an early detection and monitoring of PD. Various features were extracted from the data collected from the wearable sensors and further analyzed using statistical analysis and machine learning techniques to find the most significant features that would best distinguish between the two groups: subjects with PD and healthy control subjects. The analysis of our results shows that the …

Methodologies To Exploit Atpg Tools For De-Camouflaging, Deepak Reddy Vontela Oct 2016

Methodologies To Exploit Atpg Tools For De-Camouflaging, Deepak Reddy Vontela

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Semiconductor supply chain is increasingly getting exposed to Reverse Engineering (RE) of Intellectual Property (IP). Camouflaging of gates in integrated circuits are typically employed to hide the gate functionality to prevent reverse engineering. The functionalities of these gates cannot be found by De-layering as they don’t leave any layout clues. Adversaries perform reverse engineering by replacing the camouflaged gate with the known gate and by developing custom software to determine test patterns. These test patterns are used to analyze the outputs and to conclude the functionality of the camouflaged gate.

In this thesis, we show that reverse engineering of camouflaged …

Webinar: Transit Signal Priority Evaluation And Performance Measures, Miguel Figliozzi Oct 2016

Webinar: Transit Signal Priority Evaluation And Performance Measures, Miguel Figliozzi

TREC Webinar Series

Transit signal priority (TSP) can reduce transit delay at signalized intersections by making phasing adjustments. TSP is a relatively inexpensive tool to provide faster and more reliable transit service. This webinar addresses TSP real-word performance measures as well as data integration and evaluation challenges. Results of the TSP evaluation in an arterial corridor in Portland, Oregon indicate that a timely and effective TSP system requires a high degree of sophistication, monitoring, and maintenance. TSP timing is crucial to reduce transit delay.

Key takeaways include: performance measures, methodology, analysis of early green and red extension pros and cons, novel real-world results.

Opportunities For Energy-Water Nexus Management In The Middle East & North Africa, Amro M. Farid, William N. Lubega, William W. Hickman Oct 2016

Opportunities For Energy-Water Nexus Management In The Middle East & North Africa, Amro M. Farid, William N. Lubega, William W. Hickman

Dartmouth Scholarship

Electric power is required to produce, treat, distribute, and recycle water while water is required to generate and consume electricity. Naturally, this energy-water nexus is most evident in multi-utilities that provide electricity and water but still exists when the nexus has distinct organizations as owners and operators. Therefore, the sustainability question that arises from energy-water trade-offs and synergies is very much tied to the potential for economies of scope. Furthermore, in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, multi-utilities are not only common, but also the nexus is particularly exacerbated by the high energy intensity of the water supply …

Understanding The Effects Of Climate Change On Urban Storm Water Infrastructures In The Las Vegas Valley, Ranjeet Thakali, Ajay Kalra, Sajjad Ahmad Oct 2016

Understanding The Effects Of Climate Change On Urban Storm Water Infrastructures In The Las Vegas Valley, Ranjeet Thakali, Ajay Kalra, Sajjad Ahmad

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

The intensification of the hydrological cycle due to climate change entails more frequent and intense rainfall. As a result, urban water systems will be disproportionately affected by the climate change, especially in such urban areas as Las Vegas, which concentrates its population, infrastructure, and economic activity. Proper design and management of storm water facilities are needed to attenuate the severe effects of extreme rainfall events. The North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program is developing multiple high-resolution projected-climate data from different combinations of regional climate models and global climate models. The objective of this study was to evaluate existing storm …

Stochastic Galerkin Methods For Transient Maxwell's Equations With Random Geometries, Yongtao Cheng, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang Oct 2016

Stochastic Galerkin Methods For Transient Maxwell's Equations With Random Geometries, Yongtao Cheng, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The generalized polynomial chaos expansion was broadly introduced to model systems with uncertain inputs, including random material properties and random computational geometries. This paper focuses solving electromagnetic field when the geometry contains multi-randomness. A linear transformation always maps spatial random variables into grids with fixed length. Hence a great advantage of the method is that the numerical mesh is not changed despite geometrical variations. We applied efficient stochastic Galerkin methods to time-domain Maxwell's equations when thicknesses of two-layer media are uncertain. High-order Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin methods were performed on the resulting system of the expansion coefficients.

Enhanced Second Harmonic Generation In A Plasmonic Particle-In-Cavity Nanoantenna, Xiaoyan Y.Z. Xiong, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha, Yat Hei Lo Oct 2016

Enhanced Second Harmonic Generation In A Plasmonic Particle-In-Cavity Nanoantenna, Xiaoyan Y.Z. Xiong, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha, Yat Hei Lo

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Plasmonic nanostructures that support surface plasmon resonances potentially provide a route for the development of nanoengineered nonlinear optical media. A strong enhancement of second harmonic generation (SHG) in a particle-in-cavity nanoantenna (PIC-NA) is proposed and theoretically demonstrated in this work. The fundamental and second harmonic responses of the PIC-NA are calculated using a self-consistent boundary element method. Through a comparison with the linear field enhancement spectra, the SHG from PIC-NA is boosted by the strongly enhanced fundamental and SH fields arising from the cascaded focusing of large optical energy into the small gap. The proposed 3D plasmonic PIC-NA functions as …

Characteristic Analysis For Optical Antennas: A Generalized Equivalent Circuit Model For Nanoparticles, Ying S. Cao, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang Oct 2016

Characteristic Analysis For Optical Antennas: A Generalized Equivalent Circuit Model For Nanoparticles, Ying S. Cao, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Optical antennas, which are considered for many potential applications, are antennas which work at optical frequencies. At this frequency range, the materials, such as Al, Ag, Au and so on, formerly treated as perfect electric conductor (PEC), now have dispersive and complex permittivity, which complicates most of the methodologies. In this paper, a generalized equivalent circuit model is developed for nanoantennas not only to deal with the dispersivity of permittivity, but also to provide more physical insight. Several examples are used to benchmark the method.

Orbital Angular Momentum (Oam) Generation By Composite Pec-Pmc Metasurfaces In Microwave Regime, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha Oct 2016

Orbital Angular Momentum (Oam) Generation By Composite Pec-Pmc Metasurfaces In Microwave Regime, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Besides amplitude, phase and polarization, wave-front is also an important property of electromagnetic waves. EM waves with helical wavefront carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) attract more attentions recently for its promising applications in communications. The OAM generation for microwaves was rarely reported. And existing designs are usually very complicated and suffer low efficiency problems. We propose composite PEC (perfect electric conductor)-PMC (perfect magnetic conductor) metasurfaces to convert the LCP (RCP) plane wave with zero OAM to the RCP (LCP) helical EM wave with desired OAM at microwave regime. The conversion efficiency can nearly reach 100%.

A Novel Coordinate Transformation Based Self-Coupling Computation Approach For The Method Of Moments, Li Li, Lijun Jiang, Sheng Sun, Thomas F. Eibert, Weng Cho Chew Oct 2016

A Novel Coordinate Transformation Based Self-Coupling Computation Approach For The Method Of Moments, Li Li, Lijun Jiang, Sheng Sun, Thomas F. Eibert, Weng Cho Chew

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new highly accurate and efficient coordinate transformation algorithm is proposed for the evaluation of the self-coupling in the Method of Moments (MoM), which produces usually the strongest contributions to the MoM system matrices. The new algorithm provides an effective solution to remove the singularity due to the Green's function inside the self-couplings. Moreover, the new solution reduces the integral dimension from 4-D to 1-D. Thus, better accuracy and efficiency are obtained for the self-coupling integrals.
