Theory Of Constraints Project Management In A Manufacturing Environment, Shihching Kraft Oct 2013

Theory Of Constraints Project Management In A Manufacturing Environment, Shihching Kraft

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The following thesis covers the concepts of Theory of Constraints (TOC) Project Management. Introduced by Eliyahu M. Goldratt in I 984, TOC is a management philosophy that focuses on the use of critical chain project management to prioritize everyday tasks in a company. In TOC Project Management, there is always at least one resource constraint that limits the speed at which projects are completed. TOC management philosophy also recognizes that most projects in the manufacturing industry face unknown schedule delays that could cause projects to be completed late or over the planned budget. During project plan creation, plans are developed …

New Test Capabilities For The 0.3-Meter Transonic Cryogenic Wind Tunnel, Ben D. Phillips Oct 2013

New Test Capabilities For The 0.3-Meter Transonic Cryogenic Wind Tunnel, Ben D. Phillips

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The small-scale, cryogenic, and high pressure characteristics of the 0.3-Meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel provide a unique, high-Reynolds number research capability. However, the facility is currently restricted by its reliance on a two-dimensional adaptive wall test section coupled with an inadequate facility control system. Access to the test section is restricted, the walls require excess time for convergence and are mechanically constrained by a wall jacking system that degrades under cyclic cryogenic operations, and the tunnel requires excessive time to reach the set point, particularly at low Mach numbers. As a result, productivity and operational efficiency are limited, leading to expensive …

Examination Of Micromotion-Induced Transient Effects Of Brain Tissue Interfaced With A Neural Probe, Michael A. Polanco Oct 2013

Examination Of Micromotion-Induced Transient Effects Of Brain Tissue Interfaced With A Neural Probe, Michael A. Polanco

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Neural probes are utilized to obtain information regarding the activity of brain cells for neural stimulation. The functional longevity of a probe is dependent upon its ability to minimize injury risk during insertion and the recording period in vivo, which could be related to micromotion-related strain between the probe and surrounding tissue. A series of finite element analyses were conducted using the nonlinear transient dynamic code LSDYNA (LSTC, Livermore, CA) to study the strain induced within the brain in an area around a neural probe. A variety of displacement pulses were input into the brain, first where a high magnitude, …

An Investigation Of Unsteady, In-Cylinder Flows Of A Mock-Up Internal Combustion Engine Using Particle Image Velocimetry, David Schleeper

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Particle Image Velocimetry is frequently used in fluid mechanics and aerodynamics research to provide accurate, quantitative information on the instantaneous structure of a variety of flow fields. This technique provides a nonintrusive means of capturing vital, whole-field details of internal and external flows, such as vortex size and strength, not usually possible through other flow investigation techniques. Due to practical difficulties, the utilization of this method for the study of combustion chamber flow within an internal combustion engine is still relatively uncommon. This study used a TSI Particle Image Velocimetry system to identify two-dimensional flow patterns and velocities on a …

Harmonic Generation In Multiresonant Plasma Films, Maria Antonietta Vincenti, Domenico De Ceglia, Joseph W. Haus, Michael Scalora

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We investigate second- and third-harmonic generation in a slab of material that displays plasma resonances at the pump and its harmonic frequencies. Near-zero refractive indices and local field enhancement can deplete the pump for kW/cm2 incident powers, without resorting to other resonant photonic mechanisms. We show that low-threshold, highly efficient nonlinear processes are possible in the presence of losses and phase mismatch in structures that are 104 times shorter than typical nonlinear crystals, for relatively low irradiance values.

Formulation To Predict Lower Limb Muscle Forces During Gait, Gil Serrancolí, Jonathan P. Walter, Allison Kinney, A. Barjau, Benjamin J. Fregly, Josep M. Font-Llagunes

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

The human body has more muscles than Degrees of Freedom (DoF), and that leads to indeterminacy in the muscle force calculation. This study proposes the formulation of an optimization problem to estimate the lower-limb muscle forces during a gait cycle of a patient wearing an instrumented knee prosthesis. The originality of that formulation consists of simulating muscle excitations in a physiological way while muscle parameters are calibrated. Two approaches have been considered. In Approach A, measured contact forces are applied to the model and all inverse dynamics loads are matched in order to get a physiological calibration of muscle parameters. …

Small Wind Turbines In Turbulent (Urban) Environments: A Consideration Of Normal And Weibull Distributions For Power Prediction, Keith Sunderland, Thomas Woolmington, Jonathan Blackledge, Michael Conlon

Articles

The urban terrain and the associated morphological complexities therein, present significant challenges for the deployment of small wind turbines. In particular, a considerable amount of uncertainty is attributable to the lack of understanding concerning how turbulence within urban environments affects turbine productivity. Current wind turbine power output measurements (particularly for small/micro wind turbines) are based on an average wind speed over an observation period; with limited accountability of the variability of wind speed within the observation time frame. This paper however, presents two models that can instead accurately consider such wind speed variation and how it affects the turbine, based …

Photo-induced water splitting of water into H2 and O2 has been a major focus in the development of clean and renewable energy. The development of viable and efficient catalysts that facilitates O2 production remains the major challenge in the study of the corresponding half-reaction of water oxidation. There are plenty of metal oxides reported active in the catalysis of water oxidation. However, several important performance bench marks of those materials, such as the non-stoichiometric production of O2, slow reaction rate and/or low quantum efficiency, remain to be improved.

Ruthenium oxide (RuO2) has long been known as one of the most …

A Novel Fluid Structure Interaction And Thermal Model To Predict The Cylinder Block / Valve Plate Interface Performance In Swash Plate Type Axial Piston Machines, Marco Zecchi

Open Access Dissertations

The cylinder block / valve plate interface represents one of the most critical design element in the rotating kit of axial piston machines. The thin film of lubricant between cylinder block and valve plate has to fulfill simultaneously a bearing and a sealing function under dynamic load conditions; on the other hand, it represents an important source of power losses due to viscous friction and leakage flow.

An accurate prediction of the time changing characteristics of the interface, in terms of fluid film thickness, dynamic pressure field, load carrying ability and energy dissipation is necessary to generate more efficient and …

Fabricating Complex-Shaped Components By Room-Temperature Injection Molding Of Aqueous Ceramic Suspension Gels, Valerie Lynn Wiesner

Open Access Dissertations

Water-based ceramic suspension gels (CeraSGels) effectively produced dense, near-net shape ceramic parts by room-temperature injection molding, a novel processing method based on traditional ceramic injection molding. This alternative method eliminated the need for heating and cooling feedstocks to process, as is required in conventional injection molding, through control of the rheological response of the CeraSGels by simply varying polymer content without the use of any harsh crosslinking or curing agents or further chemical processes. The development of room-temperature injection molding initially focused on forming CeraSGels based on alumina, a readily available model material, in order to optimize suspension preparation and …

Development Of A Multiscale Atomistic Code To Investigate Self-Organized Pattern Formation Induced By Ion Irradiation, Zhangcan Yang Oct 2013

Development Of A Multiscale Atomistic Code To Investigate Self-Organized Pattern Formation Induced By Ion Irradiation, Zhangcan Yang

Open Access Dissertations

Various self-organized patterns including ripples and quantum dots can be induced by ion beam sputtering (IBS). For the past decades, the understanding of such phenomenon has been mainly relied on the Bradley-Harper theory that attributes the formation of self-organized patterns to the interplay between roughening by curvature dependence of erosion and smoothening by surface diffusion. Recently, the development of the crater function theory has overturned this erosion-based paradigm to a redistribution-based paradigm. The theory has proved that erosion is irrelevant and negligible in the pattern formation at low and intermediate incidence angles. Despite the success, there are still some questions …

Open Access Dissertations

Biomass, as the only renewable source of carbon, presents a sustainable alternative to liquid fossil fuels for the production of renewable transportation fuels and chemicals. The lignin portion of biomass poses a significant challenge in the upgrading and conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to fuels and chemicals, and in many current biorefineries is not utilized. However, the lignin fraction is a valuable feedstock due to its aromatic structure, lower O:C ratio than cellulose and hemicellulose, and high energy content (up to 40%) and weight fraction (average 25 wt%) of biomass. Several processes (including fast-pyrolysis, fast-hydropyrolysis, and liquid phase processing) are able …

Effects Of Dip-Coated Films On The Properties Of Implantable Intracortical Microelectrodes, Salah Sommakia

Open Access Dissertations

The successful clinical use of implantable intracortical microelectrodes (ICMs) to treat certain types of deafness, blindness, and paralysis is limited by a reactive tissue response (RTR) of the brain. This RTR culminates in the formation of a tight glial scar and a loss of neuronal density around implanted ICMs, and is accompanied by a decrease in signal to noise ratio and an increase in impedance. While no comprehensive mechanistic understanding of the underlying biology is currently agreed upon in the field, a general consensus exists around a highly volatile acute RTR phase. During this acute phase, the electrical properties of …
