Slow Potentials Of The Sensorimotor Cortex During Rhythmic Movements Of The Ankle, Ryan J. Mckindles Oct 2013

Slow Potentials Of The Sensorimotor Cortex During Rhythmic Movements Of The Ankle, Ryan J. Mckindles

Dissertations (1934 -)

The objective of this dissertation was to more fully understand the role of the human brain in the production of lower extremity rhythmic movements. Throughout the last century, evidence from animal models has demonstrated that spinal reflexes and networks alone are sufficient to propagate ambulation. However, observations after neural trauma, such as a spinal cord injury, demonstrate that humans require supraspinal drive to facilitate locomotion. To investigate the unique nature of lower extremity rhythmic movements, electroencephalography was used to record neural signals from the sensorimotor cortex during three cyclic ankle movement experiments. First, we characterized the differences in slow movement-related …

Physiologically-Motivated Feature Extraction Methods For Speaker Recognition, Jianglin Wang Oct 2013

Physiologically-Motivated Feature Extraction Methods For Speaker Recognition, Jianglin Wang

Dissertations (1934 -)

Speaker recognition has received a great deal of attention from the speech community, and significant gains in robustness and accuracy have been obtained over the past decade. However, the features used for identification are still primarily representations of overall spectral characteristics, and thus the models are primarily phonetic in nature, differentiating speakers based on overall pronunciation patterns. This creates difficulties in terms of the amount of enrollment data and complexity of the models required to cover the phonetic space, especially in tasks such as identification where enrollment and testing data may not have similar phonetic coverage. This dissertation introduces new …

A Novel Design Optimization Of A Fault-Tolerant Ac Permanent Magnet Machine-Drive System, Peng Zhang Oct 2013

A Novel Design Optimization Of A Fault-Tolerant Ac Permanent Magnet Machine-Drive System, Peng Zhang

Dissertations (1934 -)

In this dissertation, fault-tolerant capabilities of permanent magnet (PM) machines were investigated. The 12-slot 10-pole PM machines with V-type and spoke-type PM layouts were selected as candidate topologies for fault-tolerant PM machine design optimization problems. The combination of 12-slot and 10-pole configuration for PM machines requires a fractional-slot concentrated winding (FSCW) layout, which can lead to especially significant PM losses in such machines. Thus, a hybrid method to compute the PM losses was investigated, which combines computationally efficient finite-element analysis (CE-FEA) with a new analytical formulation for PM eddy-current loss computation in sine-wave current regulated synchronous PM machines. These algorithms …

Halloysite Nanotube Composites For Sustained Release Of Antimocrobial Agents (Antiseptics And Antibiotics), Wenbo Wei

Doctoral Dissertations

Encapsulation of antimicrobial agents (simple antiseptics and more specific antibiotics) within micro-scale and nano-scale containers may provide prolonged and more evenly distributed drug release. One of such containers proposed at Louisiana Tech is natural halloysite clay nanotubes. Halloysite is an aluminosilicate tube with a length of approximately 1 µm, outer diameter of approximately 50 nm, and internal lumen of 15 nm. The chemical composition of halloysite is similar to more common clay–kaolinite, and it can be described as rolled sheets of kaolinite. Halloysite, loaded with drugs inside its lumen, has shown aqueous release of the loaded chemicals over 10-20 hours …

Loop-Tree Free Augmented Equivalence Principle Algorithm For Low-Frequency Problems, Zu Hui Ma, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Weng Cho Chew

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this article, we describe a newly developed integral equation domain decomposition method for solving complex low frequency electromagnetic problems. This method is based on low frequency augmented equivalence principle algorithm (EPA) with the augmented electric field integral equation (A-EFIE). The A-EFIE provides a stable solution in the low-frequency regime as it includes both charge and current as unknowns to avoid the imbalance between the vector potential and the scalar potential. Based on similar idea, the augmented EPA can suppress the projection error resulting from low-frequency problems of the normal EPA. Combining these two methods, the proposed algorithm can be …

High-Power Microwave/ Radio-Frequency Components, Circuits, And Subsystems For Next-Generation Wireless Radio Front-Ends, Kenle Chen

Open Access Dissertations

As the wireless communication systems evolve toward the future generation, intelligence will be the main signature/trend, well known as the concepts of cognitive and software-defined radios which offer ultimate data transmission speed, spectrum access, and user capacity. During this evolution, the human society may experience another round of `information revolution'. However, one of the major bottlenecks of this promotion lies in hardware realization, since all the aforementioned intelligent systems are required to cover a broad frequency range to support multiple communication bands and dissimilar standards. As the essential part of the hardware, power amplifiers (PAs) capable of operating over a …

Design Synthesis And Optimization Of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines Based On Computationally-Efficient Finite Element Analysis, Gennadi Sizov

Dissertations (1934 -)

In this dissertation, a model-based multi-objective optimal design of permanent magnet ac machines, supplied by sine-wave current regulated drives, is developed and implemented. The design procedure uses an efficient electromagnetic finite element-based solver to accurately model nonlinear material properties and complex geometric shapes associated with magnetic circuit design. Application of an electromagnetic finite element-based solver allows for accurate computation in intricate performance parameters and characteristics. The first contribution of this dissertation is the development of a rapid computational method that allows accurate and efficient exploration of large multi-dimensional design spaces in search of optimum design(s). The computationally efficient finite element-based …

Vapor Distribution Above An Evaporating Sessile Drop, Peter Kelly-Zion, Christopher J. Pursell, N Hasbamrer, B Cardozo, K Gaughan, Kevin Nickels

Engineering Faculty Research

An experimental technique was developed that uses infrared tomography to measure the three-dimensional vapor distribution above an evaporating sessile drop. The technique was applied to measure the vapor distributions above evaporating drops of hexane and 3-methylpentane (3MP) at room temperature and pressure. The molecular masses of these two species are heavier than air and the vapor from the evaporating drop forms a flat, disk-shaped cloud. A Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) was used to measure the spectral absorbance along a set of paths passing through the vapor cloud. From a set of path-averaged absorbance measurements, a two-dimensional spatial concentration distribution …

Modeling And Control Of Nanoparticle Bloodstream Concentration For Cancer Therapies, Scarlett S. Bracey Oct 2013

Modeling And Control Of Nanoparticle Bloodstream Concentration For Cancer Therapies, Scarlett S. Bracey

Doctoral Dissertations

Currently, the most commonly used treatments for cancerous tumors (chemotherapy, radiation, etc.) have almost no method of monitoring the administration of the treatment for adverse effects in real time. Without any real time feedback or control, treatment becomes a "guess and check" method with no way of predicting the effects of the drugs based on the actual bioavailability to the patient's body. One particular drug may be effective for one patient, yet provide no benefit to another. Doctors and scientists do not routinely attempt to quantifiably explain this discrepancy. In this work, mathematical modeling and analysis techniques are joined together …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Storage Temperature, Moisture Content & Duration Upon The Chemical Components & Bioprocessing Of Lignocellulosic Biomass, Arun Athmanathan

Open Access Dissertations

The successful utilization of lignocellulosic biomass as a feedstock for fuels and chemicals necessitates storage for 2-6 months. It is correspondingly important to understand the impact of storage parameters - moisture concentration, temperature and duration - on biomass quality.

As aerobic storage is the most viable large-scale solution, aerobic storage experiments were carried out with three projected bioenergy feedstocks - sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) bagasse, corn (Zea mays) stover and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum). Stored samples of each were examined for dry matter loss and composition change to develop a material balance around carbohydrates and lignin.

A mean dry matter loss …

Development Of An Experimental Testbed For Research In Lithium-Ion Battery Management Systems, Nima Lotfi, Poria Fajri, Samuel Novosad, Jack Savage, Robert G. Landers, Mehdi Ferdowsi

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Advanced electrochemical batteries are becoming an integral part of a wide range of applications from household and commercial to smart grid, transportation, and aerospace applications. Among different battery technologies, lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are growing more and more popular due to their high energy density, high galvanic potential, low self-discharge, low weight, and the fact that they have almost no memory effect. However, one of the main obstacles facing the widespread commercialization of Li-ion batteries is the design of reliable battery management systems (BMSs). An efficient BMS ensures electrical safety during operation, while increasing battery lifetime, capacity and thermal stability. Despite …

Kinetic Simulations Of Plasma Plume Potential In A Vacuum Chamber, Joseph J. Wang, Daoru Frank Han, Yuan Hu Oct 2013

Kinetic Simulations Of Plasma Plume Potential In A Vacuum Chamber, Joseph J. Wang, Daoru Frank Han, Yuan Hu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Direct Simulation Monte Carlo and Particle-in-Cell simulations are carried out to study the potential of a mesothermal plasma plume in a vacuum chamber. The results show that the beam potential with respect to the ambient in a vacuum chamber is different from that in space because the facility plasma can prematurely terminate the plume expansion process. As a result, the plume potential measured in a vacuum chamber may be significantly lower than that under the in-space condition. This can lead to under estimation of the backflow of CEX ions and ionized contaminants in plasma thruster plume modeling.

Adaptive Targeting: Engaging Farmers To Assess Perceptions And Improve Watershed Modeling, Optimization, And Adoption Of Agricultural Conservation Practices, Margaret Mccahon Kalcic Oct 2013

Adaptive Targeting: Engaging Farmers To Assess Perceptions And Improve Watershed Modeling, Optimization, And Adoption Of Agricultural Conservation Practices, Margaret Mccahon Kalcic

Open Access Dissertations

Targeting agricultural conservation practices to farmland that has the greatest impact on surface water quality has received wide support from scientists and watershed managers. The targeting approach has, however, been politically contentious as many believe farmers will oppose the approach on grounds such as privacy invasion and unfair distribution of government incentives. Targeting conservation practices using complex optimization models has become common in the scientific community, and yet targeted results are underutilized in practice because of difficulties such as knowledge transfer and absence of a political framework for their use. For targeting to be successful, it must be politically supported …

Identification And Quantification Of Nonlinear Behavior In A Disbonded Aluminum Honeycomb Panel Using Single Degree-Of-Freedom Models, Eric Richard Dittman

Open Access Dissertations

There is not a complete understanding of how damage mechanisms in composite materials react to nondestructive testing inputs. A deeper understanding of composite damage mechanisms and their responses to external vibratory excitation is sought using nonlinear modeling of damping and stiffness characteristics related to the damage. Different types of damping and stiffness single degree-of-freedom models are presented with analysis of their behavior at specific harmonics of the primary resonance of the system. After an understanding of the approximate behaviors of the models is obtained, experimental tests on a damaged specimen are conducted. An aluminum honeycomb sandwich panel is damaged by …

Dimensionless Criteria For Selecting Tidally-Influenced Advective-Dispersive Desalination Brine Mixing Plume Characterization Models, Alireza Shahvari Oct 2013

Dimensionless Criteria For Selecting Tidally-Influenced Advective-Dispersive Desalination Brine Mixing Plume Characterization Models, Alireza Shahvari

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The very nature of requirements for implementing a desalination process is highly spatial due to the need to secure both a source for the operation and sink for brine dilution. Thus, the applicable coastal location is bound to natural tidal mixing characteristics and subjected to a near- or a far-field availability for source and sink. Mixing characteristics of coastal waters are very different from one point to another due to the spatiotemporal tidal characteristic in loco in a manner that it can vary from being highly advective to completely dispersive dominant. Once a location is identified, estimation of corresponding water …

Control System Of An Atomic Layer Deposition (Ald) Machine, Nitin Vishnu Hegde Oct 2013

Control System Of An Atomic Layer Deposition (Ald) Machine, Nitin Vishnu Hegde

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Atomic Layer Deposition is one of the most efficient deposition processes for obtaining ultrathin films. The deposition by this process happens one atomic layer at a time. ALD is known for its precision and ability to develop quality films with great thickness control. ALD machines simultaneously control DC and AC currents, low pressure operations, temperature control and heating (up to 500'C), precision flow control, precision timing intervals for deposition (milli-second intervals) and constantly monitor temperature. Such a high control comes at a high price. Furthermore, at the university level, the capacity to modify or enhance a machine is critical but …

Synthesis And Optimization Of Vo₂ Thin Films For Phase Transition Applications By Atomic Layer Deposition And Rf Magnetron Sputtering, Madhavi Tangirala Oct 2013

Synthesis And Optimization Of Vo₂ Thin Films For Phase Transition Applications By Atomic Layer Deposition And Rf Magnetron Sputtering, Madhavi Tangirala

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Among many Vanadium oxides and suboxides, VO2 has received considerable attention due to its remarkable metal-insulator transition (MIT) or semiconductor-metal transition (SMT) behavior, a reversible change in its electrical and optical properties that occurs due to a phase transition near a temperature of 68°C. Electrically, the resistivity of VO2 can be changed as large as 4-5 orders of magnitude. Optically, the transmittance drops dramatically above the transition temperature in the metallic state where the VO2 film becomes highly reflective in the infrared region. All these properties result in structural phase transformation from a low temperature monoclinic to …

Denitrification And Biological Phosphorus Removal Using Focused, Pulse-Treated, Thickened Waste Activated Sludge As An Internal Carbon Source, Holly Anne Hillard

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Recent research shows that an internal carbon source, derived from the treatment of waste activated sludge (WAS), could be used as an alternative to external carbon sources for denitrification in biological wastewater treatment processes. In this study, a thickened waste activated sludge (TWAS) treatment technology, developed by the company OpenCEL, was used to treat TWAS with pulsed electric fields (PEF) to transform it into an organic substrate for heterotrophic denitrification in a biological nutrient removal (BNR) system. If effective, this technique could significantly reduce the external carbon source demand.

To determine the utility of OpenCEL-treated TWAS as an internal carbon …
