Soil Nutrient Availability Properties Of Biochar, Nicole C. Esposito Oct 2013

Soil Nutrient Availability Properties Of Biochar, Nicole C. Esposito

Master's Theses

Biochar’s high porosity and negative surface charge allows for numerous soil and plant benefits such as increased water retention, high nutrient availability, and plant growth. By analysing biochar’s effect of all of these factors, a system can be put in place in which soils can be remediated with the proper soil amendments. This report discusses and tests the effects of varying rates of biochar on pH levels, cation exchange capacity, and nutrient exchangeability (of calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium) in soil. Corn plants were also grown in soils of varying amendment types and analysed for plant growth and germination to …

Fault Detection And Diagnosis For Air Conditioners And Heat Pumps Based On Virtual Sensors, Woohyun Kim Oct 2013

Fault Detection And Diagnosis For Air Conditioners And Heat Pumps Based On Virtual Sensors, Woohyun Kim

Open Access Dissertations

The primary goal of this research is to develop and demonstrate an integrated, on-line performance monitoring and diagnostic system with low cost sensors for air conditioning and heat pump equipment. Automated fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) has the potential for improving energy efficiency along with reducing service costs and comfort complaints. To achieve this goal, virtual sensors with low cost measurements and simple models were developed to estimate quantities that would be expensive and or difficult to measure directly.

A virtual refrigerant charge sensor (VRC) was extended with three approaches for determining refrigerant charge for equipment having variable-speed compressors and …

Veryifying Liquefaction Remediation Beneath And Earth Dam Using Spt And Cpt Based Methods, Ikram Guettaya, Mohamed Ridha El Ouni, Robb Moss Oct 2013

Veryifying Liquefaction Remediation Beneath And Earth Dam Using Spt And Cpt Based Methods, Ikram Guettaya, Mohamed Ridha El Ouni, Robb Moss

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This paper presents a case study of liquefaction potential assessment for the foundation of an earth dam in Tunisia. An emphasis was made on the exploration of geotechnical conditions and the interpretation of field tests (SPT and CPT) and the results were collected before and after soil densification using the vibrocompaction technique. The assessment of soil liquefaction triggering was made using deterministic and probabilistic simplified procedures. The results indicate that before vibrocompaction the studied area was prone to the liquefaction hazard. However, after vibrocompaction a significant improvement of the soil resistance reduced the liquefaction potential of the sandy foundation soil. …

String Similarity Metrics For Ontology Alignment, Michelle Cheatham, Pascal Hitzler Oct 2013

String Similarity Metrics For Ontology Alignment, Michelle Cheatham, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Ontology alignment is an important part of enabling the semantic web to reach its full potential. The vast majority of ontology alignment systems use one or more string similarity metrics, but often the choice of which metrics to use is not given much attention. In this work we evaluate a wide range of such metrics, along with string pre-processing strategies such as removing stop words and considering synonyms, on different types of ontologies. We also present a set of guidelines on when to use which metric. We furthermore show that if optimal string similarity metrics are chosen, those alone can …

Field Procedure For Estimating The Measurement Area Of Non-Contact Temperature Sensors, M. Khanal, R. Davidson Oct 2013

Field Procedure For Estimating The Measurement Area Of Non-Contact Temperature Sensors, M. Khanal, R. Davidson

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Transportation departments across the United States have installed sensors mounted on towers by the roadside to measure road surface temperatures. Since no guidelines exist for verifying the accuracy of such measurements, agencies are forced to accept claims made by vendors. To correct this situation, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) contracted with Boise State University (BSU) to test the accuracy of the non-contact, infrared temperature sensors installed throughout Idaho. Before collecting independent temperature data, BSU devised an easy-to-use procedure for determining the effective area viewed by the infrared sensors. According to ITD, the vendor claimed that at a distance of 10 …

Spectroscopic And Kinetic Characterization Of Catalytic Materials For The Conversion Of Biomass-Derived Compounds, Paul James Dietrich

Open Access Dissertations

As economies look to transition away from petroleum for social, economic, and political reasons, biomass will continue to attract attention as a renewable feedstock for the fuels and chemicals industry. In order to turn biomass into end use fuels and chemicals, the oxygen content must be lowered significantly, requiring large hydrogen inputs. For these processes to be completely renewable, the hydrogen must come from biomass or biomass-derived compounds. In this work, catalysts for the aqueous phase reforming (APR) of biomass-derived sugars were characterized by a combination of reaction kinetics, X-ray spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and theoretical computation to determine the active …

Free Your Mind-Unlock Your Inner Creativity, Alyssa Black, William Dow, Stephanie Harrison, Adam Kerbs, Katheleen Mcguire, Phillip Stroch, Jessica Urbano, Bradley Chase, Frank G. Jacobitz, Thomas Schubert

School of Engineering: Faculty Scholarship

Creativity is a major factor in many careers, subjects, and disciplines. Although many people first assume engineering to be a field of study that does not require any creativity, it is actually an essential tool for successful engineers. The mark of a truly accomplished engineer is the ability to problem-solve effectively; in other words, to generate creative solutions. Although the goal as engineers is to become more creative throughout one’s career, is it even possible to gain creativity? Is creativity an innate quality, or a learned one? Since the engineering process demands creativity, we looked into how creativity can be …

An Integrated Plasma Spectroscopic And Capacitive Sensing Platform For Water Quality Diagnostics, John William Sweeney Oct 2013

An Integrated Plasma Spectroscopic And Capacitive Sensing Platform For Water Quality Diagnostics, John William Sweeney

Doctoral Dissertations

Even in modern times, the consumption of polluted water continues to inflict tremendous suffering on millions of people worldwide that is largely preventable with adequate sanitation practices, routine water quality diagnostics, and treatment. However, conventional water quality monitoring practices remain a time consuming endeavor, where water samples collected on-site are transported to off-site laboratories for evaluation with laboratory-scale chemical analysis devices. While considerable efforts have been made to miniaturize these devices for in-field use, many of the devices reported in the literature provide an incomplete assessment of a water contaminant's environmental impact by focusing on identifying its chemical composition and …

Transition Faults And Transition Path Delay Faults: Test Generation, Path Selection, And Built-In Generation Of Functional Broadside Tests, Bo Yao Oct 2013

Transition Faults And Transition Path Delay Faults: Test Generation, Path Selection, And Built-In Generation Of Functional Broadside Tests, Bo Yao

Open Access Dissertations

As the clock frequency and complexity of digital integrated circuits increase rapidly, delay testing is indispensable to guarantee the correct timing behavior of the circuits. In this dissertation, we describe methods developed for three aspects of delay testing in scan-based circuits: test generation, path selection and built-in test generation.

We first describe a deterministic broadside test generation procedure for a path delay fault model named the transition path delay fault model, which captures both large and small delay defects. Under this fault model, a path delay fault is detected only if all the individual transition faults along the path are …

Analysis And Optimization Of Cooperative Wireless Networks, Phuong Thanh Tran Oct 2013

Analysis And Optimization Of Cooperative Wireless Networks, Phuong Thanh Tran

Open Access Dissertations

Recently, cooperative communication between users in wireless networks has attracted a considerable amount of attention. A significant amount of research has been conducted to optimize the performance of different cooperative communication schemes, subject to some resource constraints such as power, bandwidth, and time. However, in previous research, each optimization problem has been investigated separately, and the optimal solution for one problem is usually not optimal for the other problems.

This dissertation focuses on joint optimization or cross-layer optimization in wireless cooperative networks. One important obstacle is the non-convexity of the joint optimization problem, which makes the problem difficult to solve …

With clock speeds stagnating for the last few years and multi-cores having replaced uniprocessors, software development must now turn towards shared memory parallel programming to continue enhancing performance. Shared memory parallel programming; however is significantly more challenging than its sequential counterpart. Conventional shared memory parallel programs can fall victim to deadlocks, livelocks and data races which are hard to detect and debug. Aside from programming complexity chipmultiprocessors need a scalable, low latency, high bandwidth interconnect fabric to deliver performance. Conventional interconnects such as crossbars and buses can deliver low latency but do not scale with increasing number of cores. Researchers …

A Novel Multistage Image Registration Technique With Graph-Based Region Descriptors, Francis Ryals Bowen Oct 2013

A Novel Multistage Image Registration Technique With Graph-Based Region Descriptors, Francis Ryals Bowen

Open Access Dissertations

Successful image alignment is an essential function for many image processing methods. The geometric and photometric variations between images adversely affect the ability for an algorithm to estimate the transformation parameters that relate the two images. Local deformations, lightning conditions, object obstructions, and perspective differences all contribute to the challenges faced by traditional registration techniques. In this work, a novel multistage registration approach is proposed that is resilient to view point differences, image content variations, and lighting conditions. The proposed method is demonstrated to be effective for registration scenarios involving images of a scene or object before and after a …

Reasoning Across Language And Vision In Machines And Humans, Andrei Barbu

Open Access Dissertations

Humans not only outperform AI and computer-vision systems, but use an unknown computational mechanism to perform tasks for which no suitable approaches exist. I present work investigating both novel tasks and how humans approach them in the context of computer vision and linguistics. I demonstrate a system which, like children, acquires high-level linguistic knowledge about the world. Robots learn to play physically-instantiated board games and use that knowledge to engage in physical play. To further integrate language and vision I develop an approach which produces rich sentential descriptions of events depicted in videos. I then show how to simultaneously detect …
