The Effect Of Pre-Service Turbine Blade Surface Roughness On The Formation Of Deposits, John Pettitt, Dr. Jeffrey P. Bons
The Effect Of Pre-Service Turbine Blade Surface Roughness On The Formation Of Deposits, John Pettitt, Dr. Jeffrey P. Bons
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Land based Gas Turbine (GT) engines are used very widely in power generation plants. The performance of the turbine blades greatly influences the engine’s overall efficiency and service life. As turbine engines operate, the life and performance of the blades are degraded by the deposition of material. Deposits can come from dirty fuels or eroded components or from airborne particles in the environment.1 Filters have been created for GT engines in an effort to screen out such particles. When particles are ingested into the GT engine and infiltrate these filters they become molten and stick to the turbine blade surfaces. …
An Experimental Study Of The Mechanisms Of Fine Particle Deposition In Kraft Recovery Boilers, Larry Baxter
An Experimental Study Of The Mechanisms Of Fine Particle Deposition In Kraft Recovery Boilers, Larry Baxter
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Experiments on the deposition of fume (submicron) and particles produced during black liquor combustion indicate that deposit mass accumulation increases linearly with time and is independent of temperature gradient – results that are inconsistent with the classical explanation of thermophoresis as a driving force. Temperature-controlled, cylindrical probes in cross flow collected particles for periods up to ten hours and at Reynolds and Stokes numbers comparable to those in commercial boilers. Fume deposits appear dense and smooth to the unaided eye but under microscopic examination prove to have filamentary structures, with individual filaments radiating from the probe center and consisting of …

Configurable Multiprocessor System Design, Jordan Anderson, Dr. Doran Wilde
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The goal of this project was to write a hardware description of a new microprocessor in a language called VHDL that can be built inside a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The processor will run real-time applications and take advantage of the programmability of FPGA hardware by implementing several functions that are typically done in software, such as task resource allocation. The description will be used to create multiple processors that function together in one FPGA.
Flexible Residential Test Facility: Impact Of Infiltration And Ventilation On Measured Heating Season Energy And Moisture Levels, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker
Flexible Residential Test Facility: Impact Of Infiltration And Ventilation On Measured Heating Season Energy And Moisture Levels, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker
FSEC Energy Research Center®
Perhaps no residential topic has been discussed as much among building scientists as air infiltration and required mechanical ventilation. Usually, envelope tightening is recommended as an efficiency strategy for retrofitting an existing home. In humid climates, reducing infiltration can reduce summer moisture loads. However, during drier weather when the air conditioner is not running, lower infiltration can lead to potential condensation. Even though severe cold weather is rare in the Deep South, the prevalence of single-pane windows can lead to condensation events.

An Analysis Of Safety Culture & Safety Training: Comparing The Impact Of Union, Non-Union, And Right To Work Construction Venues, Harry Miller Csp, Tara Hill, Kris Mason, John S. Gaal Edd
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
The construction industry is one of the most dangerous sectors of the US economy. As such, the safety attitudes and climate within small (residential) contracting firms may play a role in providing a safe culture and working environment. The intent of this practitioner-based research study is to compare and determine if there is a difference in safety practices—based on documented field inspections and their related original number of violations observed by OSHA—between union residential carpentry contractors in the St. Louis area and:
1) non-union residential carpentry contractors in the St. Louis area;
2) non-union residential carpentry contractors across Missouri; and …

Background
Residual Dipolar Couplings (RDCs) have emerged in the past two decades as an informative source of experimental restraints for the study of structure and dynamics of biological macromolecules and complexes. The REDCAT software package was previously introduced for the analysis of molecular structures using RDC data. Here we report additional features that have been included in this software package in order to expand the scope of its analyses. We first discuss the features that enhance REDCATs user-friendly nature, such as the integration of a number of analyses into one single operation and enabling convenient examination of a structural ensemble …
The Development Of Updated And Improved Slw Model Parameters And Its Application To Comprehensive Combustion Predictions, John T. Pearson
The Development Of Updated And Improved Slw Model Parameters And Its Application To Comprehensive Combustion Predictions, John T. Pearson
Theses and Dissertations
Accurate modeling of radiative heat transfer through combustion gases has received considerable attention in recent years. The spectral line weighted-sum-of-gray-gases (SLW) model was developed based on detailed line-by-line spectral data of gases. A critical element of the SLW model is the absorption line blackbody distribution function (ALBDF). This function was designed to utilize the spectral properties of gases in an efficient and compact manner. However, there are several limitations of the ALBDF in its original form. First, the valid ranges of temperature and pressure are not large enough to include important applications, such as oxy-combustion, where temperatures can exceed 2500 …

Cell-Free Unnatural Amino Acid Incorporation With Alternative Energy Systems And Linear Expression Templates, Prashanta Shrestha, Mark Thomas Smith, Bradley Charles Bundy
Faculty Publications
Site-specific incorporation of unnatural amino acids (uAAs) during protein synthesis expands the proteomic code through the addition of unique residue chemistry. This field provides a unique tool to improve pharmacokinetics, cancer treatments, vaccine development, proteomics and protein engineering. The limited ability to predict the characteristics of proteins with uAA-incorporation creates a need for a low-cost system with the potential for rapid screening. Escherichia coli-based cell-free protein synthesis is a compelling platform for uAA incorporation due to the open and accessible nature of the reaction environment. However, typical cell-free systems can be expensive due to the high cost of energizing …
Multiple-Target Tracking In Complex Scenarios, Srinivas Phani Kumar Chavali
Multiple-Target Tracking In Complex Scenarios, Srinivas Phani Kumar Chavali
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
In this dissertation, we develop computationally efficient algorithms for multiple-target tracking: MTT) in complex scenarios. For each of these scenarios, we develop measurement and state-space models, and then exploit the structure in these models to propose efficient tracking algorithms. In addition, we address design issues such as sensor selection and resource allocation.
First, we consider MTT when the targets themselves are moving in a
time-varying multipath environment. We develop a sparse-measurement model that allows us to exploit the inherent joint delay-Doppler diversity offered by the environment. We then reformulate the problem of MTT as a
block-support recovery problem using the …

Leveraging Depolarization To Increase The Link Reliability For Wireless Sensors Operating In Hyper-Rayleigh Environments, Jeff Frolik, Vit Sipal, David J. Edwards
Articles
Wireless communications within enclosed environments such as aircraft and vehicles have been shown to experience fading with statistics that are worse than Rayleigh. Motivated by low-cost, low-complexity systems (e.g., wireless sensors) that may be deployed in such environments, this work explores the benefits of polarization diversity using very large data sets collected over a small area and over the 5-6 GHz band. The results also demonstrate that antennas capable of capturing depolarized signal components can significantly mitigate the harshest of fading environments.
Optics And Spectroscopy In Massive Electrodynamic Theory, Adam Caccavano
Optics And Spectroscopy In Massive Electrodynamic Theory, Adam Caccavano
Dissertations and Theses
The kinematics and dynamics for plane wave optics are derived for a massive electrodynamic field by utilizing Proca's theory. Atomic spectroscopy is also examined, with the focus on the 21 cm radiation due to the hyperfine structure of hydrogen. The modifications to Snell's Law, the Fresnel formulas, and the 21 cm radiation are shown to reduce to the familiar expressions in the limit of zero photon mass.

Calibration Method For Texel Images Created From Fused Lidar And Digital Camera Images, Scott E. Budge, N.S. Badamikar
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The fusion of imaging lidar information and digital imagery results in 2.5-dimensional surfaces covered with texture information, called texel images. These data sets, when taken from different viewpoints, can be combined to create three-dimensional (3-D) images of buildings, vehicles, or other objects. This paper presents a procedure for calibration, error correction, and fusing of flash lidar and digital camera information from a single sensor configuration to create accurate texel images. A brief description of a prototype sensor is given, along with a calibration technique used with the sensor, which is applicable to other flash lidar/digital image sensor systems. The method …

Evaluation Of Phase Change Materials For Cooling In A Super-Insulated Passive House, Jeffrey Stephen Lauck
Dissertations and Theses
Due to factors such as rising energy costs, diminishing resources, and climate change, the demand for high performance buildings is on the rise. As a result, several new building standards have emerged including the Passive House Standard, a rigorous energy-use standard based on a super-insulated and very tightly sealed building envelope. The standard requires that that air infiltration is less than or equal to 0.6 air changes per hour at a 50 Pascal pressure difference, annual heating energy is less than or equal to 15kWh/m2, and total annual source energy is less than or equal to 120 kWh/m2. A common …

A Tensile Deformation Model For In-Situ Dendrite/Metallic Glass Matrix Composites, J. W. Qiao, T. Zhang, Fuqian Yang, P. K. Liaw, S. Pauly, B. S. Xu
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
In-situ dendrite/metallic glass matrix composites (MGMCs) with a composition of Ti₄₆Zr₂₀V₁₂Cu₅Be₁₇ exhibit ultimate tensile strength of 1510 MPa and fracture strain of about 7.6%. A tensile deformation model is established, based on the five-stage classification: (1) elastic-elastic, (2) elastic-plastic, (3) plastic-plastic (yield platform), (4) plastic-plastic (work hardening), and (5) plastic-plastic (softening) stages, analogous to the tensile behavior of common carbon steels. The constitutive relations strongly elucidate the tensile deformation mechanism. In parallel, the simulation results by a finite-element method (FEM) are in good agreement with the experimental findings and theoretical calculations. The present study gives a mathematical model to clarify …

Theses and Dissertations
This research has been conducted in order to create a robust, lightweight feature detecting and matching algorithm that builds upon the foundation set by the TreeBASIS algorithm. The goal is to create a color-based version of the TreeBASIS algorithm that uses less hardware resources than the original, is more accurate in its matching capabilities, can successfully be deployed on a resource-limited FPGA platform, and can process in real time. This thesis first presents the newly designed hardware tri-channel FAST Feature Detector that finds features in color. Next the TreeBASIS algorithm is analyzed to discover what improvements can be made in …
Grass Referenced Based Vegetation Coefficients For Estimating Evapostranspiration For A Variery Of Natural Vegetation, Daniel J. Howes, Mariana Pasquet
Grass Referenced Based Vegetation Coefficients For Estimating Evapostranspiration For A Variery Of Natural Vegetation, Daniel J. Howes, Mariana Pasquet
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
In arid and semi-arid regions, evapotranspiration from vegetation results in the significant utilization of available water. Accurate estimates of evapotranspiration are required for surface and subsurface hydrologic evaluations as well as irrigation district water balance studies. A significant amount of transferable information exists for irrigated agricultural crops through past and current research in the form of grass or alfalfa reference based crop coefficients (Kc) and basal crop coefficients (Kcb). However, transferable evapotranspiration information on natural vegetation is limited. Much of the work was conducted in the early to mid-1900’s and is presented as actual evapotranspiration from the vegetation at the …

Improving The Sweeping Efficiency Of Permanganate Into Low Permeable Zones To Treat Tce: Experimental Results And Model Development, Chanat Chokejaroenrat, Negin Kananizadeh, Chainarong Sakulthaew, Steve D. Comfort, Yusong Li
Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications
The residual buildup and treatment of dissolved contaminants in low permeable zones (LPZs) is a particularly challenging issue for injection-based remedial treatments. Our objective was to improve the sweeping efficiency of permanganate into LPZs to treat dissolved-phase TCE. This was accomplished by conducting transport experiments that quantified the ability of xanthan-MnO4− solutions to penetrate and cover (i.e., sweep) an LPZ that was surrounded by transmissive sands. By incorporating the non-Newtonian fluid xanthan with MnO4−, penetration of MnO4− into the LPZ improved dramatically and sweeping efficiency reached 100% in fewer pore volumes. To quantify …

Robotics has been considered as one of the five key technology areas for defense against attacks with weapons of mass destruction (WMD). However, due to the mass impact nature of WMD, failures of counter-WMD (C-WMD) missions can have catastrophic consequences. To ensure robot's success in carrying out C-WMD missions, we have developed a novel verification framework in providing performance guarantees for behavior-based and probabilistic robot algorithms in complex real-world environments. This paper describes the system architecture and discusses how the verification framework can be used to provide pre-mission performance guarantees for robots in executing C-WMD missions.

Cross-Linked Alginate Film Pore Size Determination Using Atomic Force Microscopy And Validation Using Diffusivity Determinations, Cheryl Simpliciano, Larissa Clark, Behrokh Asi, Nathan Chu, Maria Mercado, Steven Diaz, Michel Goedert, Maryam Mobed-Miremadi
Bioengineering
The deficit of organ donors has fueled the need for advances in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Microencapsulation in alginate immuno-isolation membranes has been used to treat many disabling metabolic disorders, namely, phenylketonuria, kidney failure and diabetes mellitus. Systematic nutrient flux determinations are hindered by the lack of experimental data on alginate-based membrane topography and the pore size thus preventing the full therapeutic potential of the bio-membranes to be reached. In this study, samples of cross-linked alginate membranes were subjected to the following analytical characterization: 1) pore size characterization using atomic force microscopy operated in contact mode to detect and …

Resource-Aware Distributed Particle Filtering For Cluster-Based Object Tracking In Wireless Camera Networks, Kihyun Hong
Resource-Aware Distributed Particle Filtering For Cluster-Based Object Tracking In Wireless Camera Networks, Kihyun Hong
Open Access Dissertations
The proliferation of miniaturized low-power computing devices, advances in wireless communications, and the availability of inexpensive imaging sensors have enabled the development of wireless camera networks (WCN). In this dissertation, we consider the problem of real-time object tracking with a WCN. Existing object tracking methods designed for multi-camera systems do not take into account the unique constraints of WCNs. Specifically, an effective object tracking system for WCNs must anticipate unreliable network communication, limited memory, and limited computational power in each camera node. In particular, unreliable communication degrades the quality of the visual information shared by the cameras, which ultimately degrades …

The continuous downward scaling of electronic devices has renewed attention on the importance of the role of material interfaces in the functioning of key components in electronic technology in recent times. It has also brought into focus the utility of
atomistic modeling in providing insights from a materials design perspective. In this thesis, a combination of Semi Empirical Tight-Binding (TB), first-principles Density
Functional Theory and Reactive Molecular Dynamics (MD) modeling is used to study aspects of the electronic and atomic structure of three such 'canonical' material interfaces - Metal-Metal, Metal-Semiconductor and Semiconductor oxide interfaces.
An important contribution of this thesis …

Unitary Space-Time Waveform Scheduling For High-Resolution Delay-Doppler Mimo Radar Sensing, Tariq R. Qureshi
Open Access Dissertations
In this dissertation, we deal with radar systems where multiple radar waveforms are simultaneously transmitted from different antennas. The goal is to process the returns in a way that the overall ambiguity function is a sum of individual ambiguity functions, such that the sum better approximates the ideal thumbtack shape. The transmitted waveforms are based on complementary sequences, which have this property that their individual autocorrelation functions sum to a delta function. A unitary design for the illustrative 4x4 example prescribes the scheduling of the complementary sequence based waveforms over four transmit antennas over four PRIs. Further, it dictates how …
