Electrocorticography: ECoG) has gained increased notoriety over the past decade as a possible recording modality for Brain-Computer Interface: BCI) applications that offers a balance of minimal invasiveness to the patient in addition to robust spectral information over time. More recently, the scale of ECoG devices has begun to shrink to the order of micrometer diameter contacts and millimeter spacings with the intent of extracting more independent signals for BCI control within less cortical real-estate. However, most control signals to date, whether within the field of ECoG or any of the more seasoned recording techniques, have translated their control signals to …

In a companion paper, an overview and problem definition was presented for ground motion selection on the basis of the conditional spectrum (CS), to perform risk-based assessments (which estimate the annual rate of exceeding a specified structural response amplitude) for a 20-story reinforced concrete frame structure. Here, the methodology is repeated for intensity-based assessments (which estimate structural response for ground motions with a specified intensity level) to determine the effect of conditioning period. Additionally, intensity-based and risk-based assessments are evaluated for two other possible target spectra, specifically the uniform hazard spectrum (UHS) and the conditional mean spectrum (CMS, without variability). It …

The details surrounding the crossover from wormlike-specific to universal polymeric behavior has been the subject of debate and confusion even for the simple case of a dilute, unconfined wormlike chain. We have directly computed the polymer size, form factor, free energy, and Kirkwood diffusivity for unconfined wormlike chains as a function of molecular weight, focusing on persistence lengths and effective widths that represent single-stranded and double-stranded DNA in a high ionic strength buffer. To do so, we use a chain-growth Monte Carlo algorithm, the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (PERM), which allows us to estimate equilibrium and near-equilibrium dynamic properties of wormlike …

The conditional spectrum (CS, with mean and variability) is a target response spectrum that links nonlinear dynamic analysis back to probabilistic seismic hazard analysis for ground motion selection. The CS is computed on the basis of a specified conditioning period, whereas structures under consideration may be sensitive to response spectral amplitudes at multiple periods of excitation. Questions remain regarding the appropriate choice of conditioning period when utilizing the CS as the target spectrum. This paper focuses on risk-based assessments, which estimate the annual rate of exceeding a specified structural response amplitude. Seismic hazard analysis, ground motion selection, and nonlinear dynamic …
Experimental And Computational Assessment Of Mechanical Circulatory Assistance Of A Patient-Specific Fontan Vessel Configuration, Steven Chopski
Experimental And Computational Assessment Of Mechanical Circulatory Assistance Of A Patient-Specific Fontan Vessel Configuration, Steven Chopski
Theses and Dissertations
The treatment of single ventricle anomalies is a formidable challenge for clinical teams caring for patients with congenital heart disease. Those patients fortunate to survive surgical palliation contend with lifelong physical limitations and late stage pathophysiology. A mechanical blood pump specifically designed to increase pressure in the great veins would augment flow through the lungs and provide hemodynamic stability until a donor heart is located. To support the development of such medical devices, this research characterized the fluid dynamics of mechanical assistance in the Fontan circulation by performing numerical analyses and particle image velocimetry (PIV) studies in a patient-specific in …

Microelectromechanical Systems (Mems) Resistive Heaters As Circuit Protection Devices, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Scott A. Ostrow
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
With increased opportunities for the exploitation (i.e., reverse engineering) of vulnerable electronic components and systems, circuit protection has become a critical issue. Circuit protection techniques are generally software-based and include cryptography (encryption/decryption), obfuscation of codes, and software guards. Examples of hardware-based circuit protection include protective coatings on integrated circuits, trusted foundries, and macro-sized components that self-destruct, thus destroying critical components. This paper is the first to investigate the use of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) to provide hardware-based protection of critical electronic components to prevent reverse engineering or other exploitation attempts. Specifically, surface-micromachined polycrystalline silicon to be used as meandering resistive heaters …

Stochastic Optimal Controller Design For Uncertain Nonlinear Networked Control System Via Neuro Dynamic Programming, Hao Xu, Sarangapani Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The stochastic optimal controller design for the nonlinear networked control system (NNCS) with uncertain system dynamics is a challenging problem due to the presence of both system nonlinearities and communication network imperfections, such as random delays and packet losses, which are not unknown a priori. In the recent literature, neuro dynamic programming (NDP) techniques, based on value and policy iterations, have been widely reported to solve the optimal control of general affine nonlinear systems. However, for real-time control, value and policy iterations-based methodology are not suitable and time-based NDP techniques are preferred. In addition, output feedback-based controller designs are preferred …

The computer has changed every aspect of the modern world. It almost seems that this burst of technological advance in computers will continue without limit. One can go and buy a computer with more “gigahertz” today for less that another bought one for the week before. Gordon Moore, of Intel Corp., predicted this trend of scaling the transistor down every 18 months . This scaling is the reason we have seen prices continue to drop, number of transistors per chip to increase, and the personal computer become an everyday thing in most people’s lives. Though many have predicted an end …
Computer Simulated Multi-Component Aerosol Thermodynamics And Chemistry, Eric Halpenny, Dr. Larry Baxter
Computer Simulated Multi-Component Aerosol Thermodynamics And Chemistry, Eric Halpenny, Dr. Larry Baxter
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Aerosols are small (sub-micron) particles formed mainly in combustion processes by the vaporization and subsequent re-condensation of volatile, inorganic compounds. Cloud formation is an example of an aerosol process. However, unlike clouds, most aerosol-generating processes produce negative effects on both the process that forms them and the environment. Aerosols represent major process and emissions issues for essentially all systems employing low-grade fuel (coal, biomass, and black liquor). An accurate, predictive understanding of aerosol formation and chemistry would substantially improve the efficiency and environmental performance of many processes.

Oil is one of the most important commodities we have. It provides energy, transportation, and chemicals to provide a better life for mankind. However, it is a depleting recourse that is getting harder and harder to find and recover. Simulation techniques have been used for many years to determine the best place to drill wells and when it is the best time economically to stop pumping slurry. Unfortunately, current simulators often take weeks to months to complete and are only an estimate of what may occur. The industry is currently limited by slow, inaccurate simulation techniques. Faster simulators with increased …

Black liquor is a recycled byproduct formed during the pulping of wood in the papermaking industry. In this process, cellulose is used to form paper fibers while lignin is combined with water and chemical used for the extraction to form black liquor. Black liquor is burned in a recovery boiler to produce steam and electricity and is the second largest renewable energy next to hydro energy.

The traditional construction method for asphalt removal and replacement uses a high-power saw to separate the damaged asphalt from the existing pavement. The remaining material is broken and removed from the site in a time-consuming and laborious process. The saw-cut leaves a smooth, vertical edge on the asphalt surface that can lead to poor mechanical interlock between the old and new pavement materials, a major catalyst for accelerated pavement deterioration.

The fabrication and testing of micro-scale electroosmotic pumps, made with a thin-film deposition process compatible with standard silicon processing, is described. The fabrication method relies on chemical vapor deposition and chemical sacrificial etching to form long hollow fluid microchannels. Each pump consists of parallel narrow microchannels that deliver fluid to a larger wide sample handling microchannel. Flow rates were measured on these devices for different applied voltages using charge-coupled device (CCD) imaging. Pressures up to 1000 psi were produced. The pumps are based on the multiple open-channel electroosmotic pumping system described by Lazar et al [1]. However, instead of etching …

ZnO nanoneedle arrays were grown vertically on a fluorine-doped tin oxide-coated glass by hydrothermal method at a relatively low temperature. A self-powered photoelectrochemical cell-type UV detector was fabricated using the ZnO nanoneedles as the active photoanode and H2O as the electrolyte. This solid-liquid heterojunction offers an enlarged ZnO/water contact area and a direct pathway for electron transport simultaneously. By connecting this UV photodetector to an ammeter, the intensity of UV light can be quantified using the output short-circuit photocurrent without a power source. High photosensitivity, excellent spectral selectivity, and fast photoresponse at zero bias are observed in this UV detector. …

Analysis Of Electrical Current As An Agent For Bacterial Killing, Taylor Turner, Dr. William Pitt
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Previously it has been shown that antibiotic killing of bacteria, especially biofilms, can be enhanced by various non-invasive treatments. Low-level electric current has been shown to increase killing of Streptococcus gordonii biofilms when applied during treatment with gentamicin.1 Others have partially tested the feasibility of electrically killing bacteria on prosthetic joints.2 Ultrasonic exposure has also been shown to increase killing of bacterial biofilms.3 Our group previously observed that ultrasound increased the transport of gentamicin through biofilms.4 Electrical treatment of S. gordonii in the absence of gentamicin also generates a 1.9 log reduction in biofilm cell counts.1 Our previous findings showed …

One of the greatest difficulties a manager has in the current economy is being able to validly show the value that is being created by their efforts. After human resource and related issues the greatest expenses an organization faces is the total cost of ownership of their fixed assets. Many organizations both private and public are coming to the understanding that a plan must be developed for the care of facilities and other capital assets. As one looks for information on how to proceed in the development of these plans one thing becomes clear, there is no single source that …

At a university, a professor’s first and foremost job is that of a teacher. In order to become a professor, one does have to have a doctorate degree, but does not have to go through the rigorous teaching courses required for elementary, middle school, or high school teachers. Still, many professors at Brigham Young University have become outstanding teachers. I decided that I wanted to know what things had contributed to their success. My goal was that by surveying some of those professors who have received awards for their teaching and learning about the things that have added to their …
