Comparison Of Local Image Descriptors For Plant Identification From Leaf Images, Lameski Petre, Zdravevski Eftim, Kulakov Andrea

UBT International Conference

In this paper we present several descriptors used for the task of Plant recognition based on the images of leaves. The set of descriptors include texture based descriptors, fractal descriptors as well as some of the state of the art descriptors for image retrieval and object recognition in images. The descriptors are generated from the leaf images taken from single leaves on homogenous background. The descriptors are then used for training classifiers from a dataset of leaf images. The comparison of the obtained results will be presented in this paper.

Swarm Intelligence As An Optimization Technique, Alma Bregaj Nov 2013

Swarm Intelligence As An Optimization Technique, Alma Bregaj

UBT International Conference

Optimization techniques inspired by swarm intelligence have become increasingly popular during the last years. Swarm intelligence is based on nature-inspired behaviours and is successfully applied to optimisation problems in a variety of fields. The advantage of these approaches over traditional techniques is their robustness and flexibility. These properties make swarm intelligence a successful design paradigm for algorithms that deal with increasingly complex problems. In this paper I am focused on the comparison between different swarm-based optimisation algorithms and I have presented some examples of real practical applications of these algorithms.

Certain robot missions need to perform predictably in a physical environment that may only be poorly characterized in advance. We have previously developed an approach to establishing performance guarantees for behaviorbased controllers in a process-algebra framework. We extend that work here to include random variables, and we show how our prior results can be used to generate a Dynamic Bayesian Network for the coupled system of program and environment model. Verification is reduced to a filtering problem for this network. Finally, we present validation results that demonstrate the effectiveness of the verification of a multiple waypoint robot mission using this …

Load Path Uncertainty In A Wood Structure And The Effect On Structural Reliability, Wenqi Wang, Christopher D. Eamon Nov 2013

Load Path Uncertainty In A Wood Structure And The Effect On Structural Reliability, Wenqi Wang, Christopher D. Eamon

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research Publications

The roof truss bearing points of a light-framed wood house were instrumented with load cells. It was found that under dead load alone, symmetric and theoretically identical truss reactions have significant variation. A similar degree of reaction discrepancy was found under the application of uplift pressures caused by hurricane winds. Analysis revealed that the majority of this discrepancy is caused by inherent uncertainties in load path. Although uncertainties in load magnitude and material resistance are accounted for in design by use of appropriate load and resistance factors, load path is generally taken to be deterministic. In this study, load path …

Reliability Analysis Of Reinforced Concrete Columns Exposed To Fire, Christopher D. Eamon, Elin A. Jensen Nov 2013

Reliability Analysis Of Reinforced Concrete Columns Exposed To Fire, Christopher D. Eamon, Elin A. Jensen

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research Publications

A reliability analysis is conducted on reinforced concrete columns subjected to fire load. From an evaluation of load frequency of occurrence, load random variables are taken to be dead load, sustained live load, and fire temperature. Resistance is developed for axial capacity, with random variables taken as steel yield strength, concrete compressive strength, placement of reinforcement, and section width and height. A rational interaction model based on the Rankine approach is used to estimate column capacity as a function of fire exposure time. Various factors were considered in the analysis such as fire type, load ratio, reinforcement ratio, cover, concrete …

High Data Rate Coherent Optical Ofdm System For Long-Haul Transmission, Khaled Alatawi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The growth in internet traffic has driven the increase in demand for bandwidth and high data rates. Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing is considered as a promising technology to satisfy the increased demand for bandwidth in broadband services. Optical OFDM received a great attention after proposing it as a modulation technique for the long-haul transmission in both direct and coherent detection. However, Coherent Optical OFDM (CO-OFDM) is the next generation technology for the optical communications, since it integrates the advantages of both coherent systems and OFDM systems. It has the ability to overcome many optical fiber restrictions such as chromatic …

Meta-Routing: Synergistic Merging Of Message Routing And Link Maintenance, Mustafa A. Ayad Nov 2013

Meta-Routing: Synergistic Merging Of Message Routing And Link Maintenance, Mustafa A. Ayad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The maintenance of network connectivity is essential for effective and efficient mobile team operations. Achieving robust mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) connectivity requires a capable link maintenance mechanism especially if the network experiences expected intermittent connectivity due to a hostile environment. One applicable example of such network scenarios is multi-robot exploration for urban search and rescue (USAR). With the proliferation of these robotic networks, communication problems such as the link maintenance problem are subject to be raised quickly. Although various routing protocols for wireless ad hoc networks have been proposed, they solve the problems of message routing and link maintenance …

Integration Of Oofdm With Rof For High Data Rates Long-Haul Optical Communications, Fahad Almasoudi Nov 2013

Integration Of Oofdm With Rof For High Data Rates Long-Haul Optical Communications, Fahad Almasoudi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the advanced technologies in optical fiber communication systems that support efficient convergence of wireless and optical access network structure is Radio over Fiber (RoF). In RoF, light is modulated by using a radio signal and sent over an optical fiber link to simplify wireless access. The demand for high-speed wireless communications is increasing rapidly. To increase the capacity and bandwidth of the optical fiber communication system a Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) is used. In WDM, multiple optical carrier signals are multiplexed and transmitted over one optical fiber.

Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OOFDM) technology commits to be a fundamental …

Multi-Physical Study Of Mems Resonators And Oscillators, Xiaobo Guo Nov 2013

Multi-Physical Study Of Mems Resonators And Oscillators, Xiaobo Guo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

First, this research presents experimental and theoretical investigation of the response of micro scale dual-plate thermal-piezoresistive resonators (TPR) and self-sustained oscillators (TPO) to different gases and pressures. It is demonstrated that the resonant frequency of such devices follows particular trends in response to the changes in the surrounding gas and its pressure. A mathematical model has been derived to explain the damping dependent frequency shift characteristic of TPO. The solution of the model indicates that the stiffness of the actuator beam decreases as the value of damping coefficient drops at lower gas density caused by the change in the gas …

A Systematic Study Of Radiation-Induced Segregation In Ferritic–Martensitic Alloys, Janelle P. Wharry, Gary S. Was Nov 2013

A Systematic Study Of Radiation-Induced Segregation In Ferritic–Martensitic Alloys, Janelle P. Wharry, Gary S. Was

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A systematic approach to measuring radiation-induced segregation (RIS) was used on four ferritic–martensitic (F–M) alloys: T91, HCM12A, HT9, and a Fe–9Cr model alloy, irradiated with 2.0 MeV protons over a range of doses (1–10 dpa) and temperatures (300–700°C). The experimental conditions are established so as to isolate the dependence of RIS on the experimental parameters: temperature, dose and bulk composition. RIS is measured at prior austenite grain boundaries (PAGBs) using the STEM/EDX technique. Chromium is found to enrich at PAGBs in all conditions with the exception being T91 irradiated to 3 dpa at 700°C. The magnitude of enrichment is small …

Magnetic Interaction Reversal In Watermelon Nanostructured Cr-Doped Fe Nanoclusters, Maninder Kaur, Qilin Dai, Mark Bowden, Mark H. Engelhard, Yaqiao Wu, Jinke Tang, You Qiang

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cr-doped core-shell Fe/Fe-oxide nanoclusters (NCs) were synthesized at varied atomic percentages of Cr from 0 at. % to 8 at. %. The low concentrations of Cr (%) were selected in order to inhibit the complete conversion of the Fe-oxide shell to Cr2O3 and the Fe core to FeCr alloy. The magnetic interaction in Fe/Fe-oxide NCs (~25 nm) can be controlled by antiferromagnetic Cr-dopant. We report the origin of σ-FeCr phase at very low Cr concentration (2 at. %) unlike in previous studies, and the interaction reversal from dipolar to exchange interaction in watermelon-like Cr-doped core-shell NCs.

Power Fluctuations Smoothing And Regulations In Wind Turbine Generator Systems, Hamed Babazadehrokni Nov 2013

Power Fluctuations Smoothing And Regulations In Wind Turbine Generator Systems, Hamed Babazadehrokni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wind is one of the most popular renewable energy sources and it has the potential to become the biggest energy source in future. Since the wind does not always blow constantly, the output wind power is not constant which may make some problem for the power grid. According to the grid code which is set by independent system operator, ISO, wind turbine generator systems need to follow some standards such as the predetermined acceptable power fluctuations.

In order to smooth the output powers, the energy storage system and some power electronics modules are employed. The utilized power electronics modules in …

Modification Of A Low Cost Vacuum Chamber For Use With An Electromagnetic Railgun, Jason M. Bertels Nov 2013

Modification Of A Low Cost Vacuum Chamber For Use With An Electromagnetic Railgun, Jason M. Bertels

Aerospace Engineering

This report details the design and manufacture of modifications to a low cost vacuum chamber intended for railgun operations. These modifications intend to increase the functionality of the chamber and enable the modeling of high velocity impacts in a space. The original vacuum chamber was constructed primarily from polyvinyl chloride to meet the low cost design constraints, which limits pressures obtainable to the low vacuum region (760 Torr to 2 Torr). Modifications include construction of a space-saving storage rack, replacement of external door supports, installation of an internal guide rail, and installation of electrical feedthroughs.

Dexterous Hexrotor Uav Platform, Guangying Jiang Nov 2013

Dexterous Hexrotor Uav Platform, Guangying Jiang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mobile manipulation is a hot area of study in robotics as it unites the two classes of robots: locomotors and manipulators. An emerging niche in the field of mobile manipulation is aerial mobile manipulation. Although there has been a fair amount of study of free-flying satellites with graspers, the more recent trend has been to outfit UAVs with graspers to assist various manipulation tasks. While this recent work has yielded impressive results, it is hampered by a lack of appropriate testbeds for aerial mobile manipulation, similar to the state of ground-based mobile manipulation a decade ago. Typical helicopters or quadrotors …

Updating The Kentucky Contract Time Determination System, Timothy R. B. Taylor, Paul M. Goodrum, Michael Brockman, Barry Bishop, Yongwei Shan, Roy E. Sturgill, Kevin Hout

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Federal Highway Administration requires State Transportation Agencies to have a formal method to estimate contract time for highway construction projects. To meet this requirement many states use an integrated scheduling system to estimate project durations based on assumed productivity rates and generic job logic. The current work investigated the accuracy of two of these systems found that both systems accuracy in predicting the duration of Kentucky Transportation Cabinet projects was greater than +200%. In response to this poor accuracy, a parametric project duration estimating tool was developed based on a multivariate regression analysis of bid item quantities and engineering …

Postcyclic Behavior Of Low-Plasticity Silt With Limited Excess Pore Pressures, Shuying Wang, Ronaldo Luna, Junsheng Yang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper investigates the post cyclic behavior of low-plasticity silt with excess pore pressure ratio (Ru) less than 1. The testing specimens were prepared from Mississippi River Valley (MRV) silt. Full and no reconsolidation were allowed after specimens were subjected to various excess pore pressure ratios due to cyclic loading in a cyclic triaxial cell, and then monotonic shear tests were conducted. The effect of the Ru on shear strength and stiffness at small and large deformation was investigated. It was found that a Ru greater than 0.70 is a prerequisite of large increase in volumetric strain and undrained shear …

Experiments were designed to replicate typical field usage conditions, using ambient temperature and relative humidity values, and testing the carbon as is, without pretreatment to remove moisture. BPL and OVC carbons from Calgon Carbon were tested in vials, with initial headspace concentrations ranging from 2130 to 5020 ppmv (86 to 120 …

Nonlinear Energy Harvesting Under White Noise, Qifan He Nov 2013

Nonlinear Energy Harvesting Under White Noise, Qifan He

All Theses

While purposeful introduction of stiffness nonlinearities into the dynamics of energy harvesters is aimed at enhancing performance under non-stationary and random excitations, most of the conclusions reported in the current literature are based on the steady-state response which assumes a harmonic fixed-frequency excitation. As a result, we still do not have a clear understanding of how the nature of the excitation influences the output power, or what role stiffness nonlinearities play in the transduction of energy harvesters under random excitations. To fill this gap in the current knowledge, this thesis investigates the response of nonlinear mono- and bi-stable energy harvesters …
