The Enterprise Aid Methodology: Concepts, Thomas J. Meyers, Patrick T. Hester

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

The Enterprise AID − for assessment, improvement, and design − methodology is a systems science-, operational test and evaluation-, and multicriteria decision analysis-based approach to design and deployment of performance measurement systems (PMSs) tailored to specific enterprises pursuing any or all of enterprise assessment, improvement, or design. Its two phases of design and deployment sprang from designers’ inductively generated and now prototyped response to a gap they recognized between performance measurement capabilities required by contemporary enterprises and those offered by contemporary PMSs. This paper illustrates key concepts underlying AID, while a companion document, The Enterprise AID methodology: Application, draws from …

Background: Survival and colony formation by transplanted tissue derived connective tissue progenitor cells (CTPs) are thought to be important factors in the success of clinical tissue engineering strategies for bone regeneration. Transplantation of cells into defects larger than a few millimeters expose cells to a profoundly hypoxic environment. This study tested the hypothesis that delaying the onset of hypoxia will improve the survival and performance of CTPs in vitro.

Methods: To mimic declines seen in an avascular in vivo bone defect, colony forming efficiency by marrow derived nucleated cells was assessed under osteogenic conditions. Variation in the rate of …

Chemoelastoplastic Analysis Of A Copper-Graded Silicon Nanorod For Lithium-Ion Battery Anode Application, Chao Ji Jan 2013

Chemoelastoplastic Analysis Of A Copper-Graded Silicon Nanorod For Lithium-Ion Battery Anode Application, Chao Ji

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Lithium-ion batteries are currently widely used in electronics, electrical vehicles and other devices/machines. Along with the mounting demand for much improved performance in these developing technological fields, silicon was recognized to possess much higher energy capacity when used as an anode than graphite that is currently used. However, there occurs colossal volume expansion of silicon anode during the lithiation process. The material consequently suffers enormous stresses, especially, at the interface with a current collector, which deteriorate the device quickly during cycling. To prevent the active material (Si) from falling off from a current collector, nanoengineering strategies have been suggested, including …

The ever increasing information technology heat load and data center cooling energy are the main reasons to investigate the performance of microencapsulated phase change slurry over other heat transfer fluids. In recent years, more effort is being made on the development of a new technique to use the phase change materials as pump-able heat transfer fluid and as heat storage system.Microencapsulated phase change slurry is dispersion where the phase change material, microencapsulated by a polymeric capsule, is dispersed in water. Compared to water, these new fluids have a higher heat capacity during phase change and a possible enhancement, as a …

Thermal Management Method For Foil Bearings In Turbine Hot Section, Tejas Devidas Patil Jan 2013

Thermal Management Method For Foil Bearings In Turbine Hot Section, Tejas Devidas Patil

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Recently, Air Foil Bearings (AFB) are gaining higher industrial acceptance in micro-turbo machinery. AFB show high speed operating capability and environmental friendly operation in comparison to rolling element bearings. Utilization of ambient air as a lubricant eliminates maintenance of a pressurized oil lubricating system. AFBs are therefore a feasible alternative to oil lubricated bearings in small machines. High speed operation results in thermal management issues which can be solved through a suitable cooling mechanism. Axial cooling by passing air through bearing support structure (called bump foils) is the most commonly used. In this method, cooling is achieved in the heat …

Immersion Cooling Of High End Data Center Server And Validation Through Experiments, Harsh Patel

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Despite recent improvements in data center cooling efficiency such as hot and cold aisle and air side economizer, air cooling may not have the capacity to cool high end racks such as from IBM's NetBAY42 (150Kw and above). Increasing computer capabilities in data center has resulted in increase in rack power density per square ft as indicated by the latest uptime. The cooling of such high powered servers and corresponding racks poses a significant challenge to thermal engineers. The use of immersion cooling is novel approach for data center cooling. In this study after some modification high powered server is fully …

Interest Aware Peoplerank: Towards Effective Social-Based Opportunistic Advertising, Soumaia Al Ayyat Jan 2013

Interest Aware Peoplerank: Towards Effective Social-Based Opportunistic Advertising, Soumaia Al Ayyat

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

Various emerging context aware social-based applications and services assume constant non-disruptive connectivity. Mobile advertisers in such environments want to reach potentially interested users in a given proximity and within a specified short duration, whether these users are connected to the network or not. While opportunistic forwarding algorithms can be leveraged for forwarding these advertisements, there is little incentive for those not interested in the ad to act as forwarders. Our goal in this paper is to leverage explicit interest, gathered from a user’s social profile, and integrate it with social-based opportunistic forwarding algorithms in order to enable soft real time …

Injection Locking Of Semiconductor Mode-Locked Lasers For Long-Term Stability Of Widely Tunable Frequency Combs, Charles Williams Jan 2013

Injection Locking Of Semiconductor Mode-Locked Lasers For Long-Term Stability Of Widely Tunable Frequency Combs, Charles Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Harmonically mode-locked semiconductor lasers with external ring cavities offer high repetition rate pulse trains while maintaining low optical linewidth via long cavity storage times. Single frequency injection locking generates widely-spaced and tunable frequency combs from these harmonically mode-locked lasers, while stabilizing the optical frequencies. The output is stabilized long-term with the help of a feedback loop utilizing either a novel technique based on Pound-Drever-Hall stabilization or by polarization spectroscopy. Error signals of both techniques are simulated and compared to experimentally obtained signals. Frequency combs spaced by 2.5 GHz and ~10 GHz are generated, with demonstrated optical sidemode suppression of unwanted …

Detecting Semantic Method Clones In Java Code Using Method Ioe-Behavior, Rochelle Elva Jan 2013

Detecting Semantic Method Clones In Java Code Using Method Ioe-Behavior, Rochelle Elva

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The determination of semantic equivalence is an undecidable problem; however, this dissertation shows that a reasonable approximation can be obtained using a combination of static and dynamic analysis. This study investigates the detection of functional duplicates, referred to as semantic method clones (SMCs), in Java code. My algorithm extends the input-output notion of observable behavior, used in related work [1, 2], to include the effects of the method. The latter property refers to the persistent changes to the heap, brought about by the execution of the method. To differentiate this from the typical input-output behavior used by other researchers, I …

Modeling And Simulation Of All-Electric Aircraft Power Generation And Actuation, David Woodburn Jan 2013

Modeling And Simulation Of All-Electric Aircraft Power Generation And Actuation, David Woodburn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Modern aircraft, military and commercial, rely extensively on hydraulic systems. However, there is great interest in the avionics community to replace hydraulic systems with electric systems. There are physical challenges to replacing hydraulic actuators with electromechanical actuators (EMAs), especially for flight control surface actuation. These include dynamic heat generation and power management. Simulation is seen as a powerful tool in making the transition to all-electric aircraft by predicting the dynamic heat generated and the power flow in the EMA. Chapter 2 of this dissertation describes the nonlinear, lumped-element, integrated modeling of a permanent magnet (PM) motor used in an EMA. …

Development Of The Strategy To Select Optimum Reflective Cracking Mitigation Methods For The Hot-Mix Asphalt Overlays In Florida, Hamid Maherinia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) overlay is a major rehabilitation treatment for the existing deteriorated pavements (both flexible and rigid pavements). Reflective cracking (RC) is the most common distress type appearing in the HMA overlays which structurally and functionally degrades the whole pavement structure, especially under high traffic volume. Although many studies have been conducted to identify the best performing RC mitigation technique, the level of success varies from premature failure to good performance in the field. In Florida, Asphalt Rubber Membrane Interlayers (ARMIs) have been used as a RC mitigation technique but its field performance has not been successful. In …

Fabrication Of Metallic Antenna Arrays Using Nanoimprint Lithography, Yu-Wei Lin Jan 2013

Fabrication Of Metallic Antenna Arrays Using Nanoimprint Lithography, Yu-Wei Lin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This Thesis describes the development of a cost-effective process for patterning nanoscale metal antenna arrays. Soft ultraviolet (UV) Nanoimprint Lithography (NIL) into bilayer resist was chosen since it enables repeatable large-scale replication of nanoscale patterns with good lift-off properties using a simple low-cost process. Nanofabrication often involves the use of Electron Beam Lithography (EBL) which enables the definition of nanoscale patterns on small sample regions, typically < 1 mm 2 . However its sequential nature makes the large scale production of nanostructured substrates using EBL cost-prohibitive. NIL is a pattern replication method that can reproduce nanoscale patterns in a parallel fashion, allowing the low-cost and rapid production of a large number of nanopatterned samples based on a single nanostructured master mold. Standard NIL replicates patterns by pressing a nanostructured hard mold into a soft resist layer on a substrate resulting in exposed substrate regions, followed by an optional Reactive Ion Etching (RIE) step and the subsequent deposition of e.g. metal onto the exposed substrate area. However, non-vertical sidewalls of the features in the resist layer resulting from an imperfect hard mold, from reflow of the resist layer, or from isotropic etching in the RIE step iii may cause imperfect lift-off. To overcome this problem, a bilayer resist method can be used. Using stacked resist layers with different etch rates, undercut structures can be obtained after the RIE step, allowing for easy lift-off even when using a mold with non-vertical sidewalls. Experiments were carried out using a nanostructured negative SiO2 master mold. Various material combinations and processing methods were explored. The negative master mold was transferred to a positive soft mold, leaving the original master mold unaltered. The soft mold consisted of a 5 m thick top Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), or Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) layer, a 1.5 mm thick Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) buffer layer, and a glass supporting substrate. The soft mold was pressed into a bilayer of 300 nm PMMA and 350 nm of silicon based UV-curable resist that was spin-coated onto a glass slide, and cured using UV radiation. The imprinted patterns were etched using RIE, exposing the substrate, followed by metal deposition and lift-off. The experiments show that the use of soft molds enables successful pattern transfer even in the presence of small dust particles between the mold and the resist layer. Feature sizes down to 280 nm were replicated successfully

Volume Phase Masks In Photo-Thermo-Refractive Glass, Marc Segall Jan 2013

Volume Phase Masks In Photo-Thermo-Refractive Glass, Marc Segall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In many applications such as beam shaping, mode conversion, and phase encoding it is necessary to alter the spatial phase profile of a beam via a phase mask. Conventional techniques to accomplish this either involve surface relief profiling in thin films such as PMMA or refractive index modulation in bulk photorefractive crystals such as lithium niobate. These materials have been used extensively for the past several decades and perform admirably in low power conditions. However, in high power systems these materials will be destroyed, requiring a new means of producing phase masks. In this dissertation a method for producing robust …

Analytical And Experimental Study Of Monitoring For Chain-Like Nonlinear Dynamic Systems, Bryan Paul Jan 2013

Analytical And Experimental Study Of Monitoring For Chain-Like Nonlinear Dynamic Systems, Bryan Paul

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inverse analysis of nonlinear dynamic systems is an important area of research in the eld of structural health monitoring for civil engineering structures. Structural damage usually involves localized nonlinear behaviors of dynamic systems that evolve into different classes of nonlinearity as well as change system parameter values. Numerous parametric modal analysis techniques (e.g., eigensystem realization algorithm and subspace identification method) have been developed for system identification of multi-degree-of-freedom dynamic systems. However, those methods are usually limited to linear systems and known for poor sensitivity to localized damage. On the other hand, non-parametric identification methods (e.g., artificial neural networks) are advantageous …

Vision-Based Sensing And Optimal Control For Low-Cost And Small Satellite Platforms, Bradley Sease Jan 2013

Vision-Based Sensing And Optimal Control For Low-Cost And Small Satellite Platforms, Bradley Sease

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Current trends in spacecraft are leading to smaller, more inexpensive options whenever possible. This shift has been primarily pursued for the opportunity to open a new frontier for technologies with a small financial obligation. Limited power, processing, pointing, and communication capabilities are all common issues which must be considered when miniaturizing systems and implementing low-cost components. This thesis addresses some of these concerns by applying two methods, in attitude estimation and control. Additionally, these methods are not restricted to only small, inexpensive satellites, but offer a benefit to large-scale spacecraft as well. First, star cameras are examined for the tendency …

Phase-Locking Stability Of A Quasi-Single-Cycle Pulse, Nathan Bodnar Jan 2013

Phase-Locking Stability Of A Quasi-Single-Cycle Pulse, Nathan Bodnar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is increasing interest in the generation of very short laser pulses, even down to attosecond (10-18 s) durations. Laser systems with femtosecond pulse durations are needed for these applications. For many of these applications, positioning of the maximum electric field within the pulse envelope can affect the outcome. The peak of the electric field relative to the peak of the pulse is called the Carrier Envelope Phase (CEP). Controlling the position of the electric field becomes more important when pulse duration approaches single-cycle. This thesis focuses on the stabilization of a quasi-single-cycle laser facility. Improvements to this already-established laser …

Multiple studies have been conducted to determine the cause of this decline in degrees awarded, and try to reverse the trend in US education. The goal of these studies was to determine the proper instructional methods that facilitate the knowledge acquisition process for the student. It has been determined that not one method works for all types of curriculum, for example methods that have been found to work effectively in curriculum that teaches procedures …

Integration Of Arbitrary Lumped Multiport Circuit Networks Into The Discontinuous Galerkin Time-Domain Analysis, Ping Li, Li Jun Jiang Jan 2013

Integration Of Arbitrary Lumped Multiport Circuit Networks Into The Discontinuous Galerkin Time-Domain Analysis, Ping Li, Li Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A hybrid electromagnetic (EM) circuit simulator is proposed for incorporating multiport lumped circuit networks through their admittance matrices into the discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method. The admittance matrix in the Laplace domain can be derived analytically or obtained from network parameters such as -parameters in the frequency domain. To convert frequency-dependent -parameters into the admittance matrix in the Laplace domain, the vector-fitting technique is employed to facilitate the mapping process. The computational domain of interest is split into two subdomains. One is the EM part solved by the DGTD, and another is the circuit part modeled by the basic I-V …

The Numerical Steepest Descent Path Method For Calculating Physical Optics Integrals On Smooth Conducting Quadratic Surfaces, Yu Mao Wu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha, Weng Cho Chew

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we use the numerical steepest descent path (NSDP) method to analyze the highly oscillatory physical optics (PO) integral on smooth conducting parabolic surfaces, including both monostatic and bistatic cases. Quadratic variations of the amplitude and phase functions are used to approximate the integrand of PO integral. Then the surface PO integral is reduced into several highly oscillatory line integrals. By invoking the NSDP method, these highly oscillatory PO line integrals are defined on the corresponding NSDPs. Furthermore, the critical point contributions for the PO integral are exactly extracted and represented based on the NSDPs. The proposed NSDP …

Skin-Effect Loss Models For Time- And Frequency-Domain Peec Solver, Albert E. Ruehli, Giulio Antonini, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A challenging and interesting issue for the solution of large electromagnetic problems is the efficient, sufficiently accurate modeling of the broadband skin-effect loss for conducting planes and 3-D shapes. The inclusion of such models in an electromagnetic (EM) solver can be very costly in compute time and memory requirements. These issues are particularly important for the class of signal, power, and noise integrity (NI) problems. In this paper, we concentrate on partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC)-type methods which are suitable for the solution of this class of problems. Progress has been made recently in the design of skin-effect models. The …

An Iterative Source Reconstruction Method Exploiting Phaseless Electric Field Data, Ping Li, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Conventional equivalent source reconstruction methods (SRM) require both phase and amplitude information of the acquired field data. However, there are situations where the phase information is not available or impractical to obtain. Hence, the development of SRM using phaseless fields is important. In this paper, a novel iterative SRM based on phaseless electric fields is presented. The reconstructed equivalent current source can be electric, magnetic current, or both. They can fit the physical geometry of the radiator. Electric field integral equation (EFIE) is employed to build the relationship between the reconstructed current source and measured fields. It can precisely reproduce …

A Systematic Electromagnetic-Circuit Method For Emi Analysis Of Coupled Interconnects On Dispersive Dielectrics, Min Tang, Jiaqing Lu, Junfa Mao, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a systematic electromagnetic-circuit method for efficient simulation of coupled interconnects on dispersive dielectrics in the presence of electromagnetic interference. The dispersive substrate of coupled interconnects is characterized by the multiterm Debye or Lorentz formula. According to the differential equations derived from the equivalent circuit modeling of dispersive media, the full-wave finite-difference time-domain algorithm is utilized to capture accurate field in a dispersive substrate. The effects of incident field, under the quasi-TEM assumption, are then represented by the distributed sources along transmission lines. An efficient algorithm based on the waveform relaxation with transverse partitioning (WR-TP) is employed for …
