Synergies Controls Improve Prediction Of Knee Contact Forces And Muscle Excitations During Gait, Benjamin J. Fregly, Jonathan P. Walter, Allison Kinney, Scott A. Banks, Darryl D. D'Lima, Thor F. Besier, David G. Lloyd
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
This study investigates whether use of muscle excitation controls constructed from subjectspecific muscle synergy information can improve optimization prediction of knee contact forces and muscle excitations during walking. Muscle synergies quantify how a large number of experimental muscle electromyographic (EMG) signals can be reconstructed by linearly mixing a much smaller number of neural commands generated by the nervous system. Our hypothesis was that controlling all muscle excitations with a small set of experimentally calculated neural commands would improve prediction of knee contact forces and leg muscle excitations compared to using independently controlled muscle excitations.
Network Dynamics Of Visual Naming, Christopher R. Conner
Network Dynamics Of Visual Naming, Christopher R. Conner
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Recognition and naming of objects and actions are fundamental components of language. They involve several different systems working in coordination to accomplish a complex behavior. During visual naming, sensory and semantic processing are carried out by dedicated cortical substrates in the temporal and occipital lobes, while response selection and articulatory planning are handled by prefrontal cortex. Despite decades of research using lesion analysis, functional MRI and electro-encephalography, the precise dynamics involved remain unknown due to the inadequate spatio-temporal resolution of these methodologies. Of particular interest is the organization of semantic knowledge and the degree of serial and parallel organization of …
Parameterizing Analytical Models To Support An Empirically Based Warehouse Design Methodology, Lisa Thomas
Parameterizing Analytical Models To Support An Empirically Based Warehouse Design Methodology, Lisa Thomas
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research in the area of warehouse design is characterized by a myriad of analytical models that address one, typically small and isolated, area of the warehouse. These models, although important in gaining insight into one question of warehouse design, are of limited value when one considers the larger question of overall warehouse design. Thus, research in the area of overall warehouse design typically consists of procedure-driven processes based on qualitative factors and not the quantifiable results of analytical models.
In contrast, practitioners have significant empirical data related to how a design alternative performs in an industry, a company, or a …

Structural Properties Of Ferroelectric Lead (Zirconium0.5,Titanium0.5)Oxygen3 Nanotube Array And Electronic Structure Of Lao Delta-Doped Strontium Titanate, Rajendra Prasad Adhikari
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this Dissertation we begin with two introductions on: 1) ferroelectricity and related phenomena, and 2) novel properties of Oxide electronics and the generation of two dimensional electron gas. We then give theoretical background of density functional theory (including LDA+U) and pseudopotentials. The first part of research work is about structural, polarization, and dielectric properties of ferroelectric Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) solid solution in the form of a nanotube array, embedded in a matrix medium of different ferroelectric strengths. We use the effective Hamiltonian derived from first-principles and finite-temperature Monte Carlo methods to determine the various properties. We revealed different …

Multiscale Study Of Batio3 Nanostructures And Nanocomposites, Lydie Louis Louis
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Advancements in integrated nanoelectronics will continue to require the use of unique materials or systems of materials with diverse functionalities in increasingly confined spaces.
Hence, research on finite-dimensional systems strive to unearth and expand the knowledge of fundamental physical properties in certain key materials which exhibit numerous concurrent and exploitable functions.
Correspondingly, ferroelectric nanostructures, which particularly display a plethora of complex phenomena, prevalent in countless fields of research, are noteworthy candidates. Presently, however, the assimilation of zero-(0D) and one-dimensional (1D) ferroelectric into micro- or nano-electronics has been lagging, in part due to a lack of applied and fundamental studies but …

Sustainable Design Education Through A Self-Directed Online System, Jeremy Faludi, Adam Menter
Dartmouth Scholarship
Sustainable design and engineering is an important topic, yet it is under-represented in educational institutions; moreover, it must be taught to practicing professionals, not just students. A free online system has been created to address both problems at once, providing educational materials for educators and also providing a self-paced program for professionals or students to earn a certificate in sustainable design. Called the Autodesk Sustainability Workshop, it is a collection of video tutorials and supporting materials (PDF reference guides, slide decks, quizzes, and other resources) that can be used either by individuals themselves or by educators (either in schools or …

Investigation Of Sound Transmission Through An Open Window Into A Room, Caleb F. Sieck
Investigation Of Sound Transmission Through An Open Window Into A Room, Caleb F. Sieck
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In recent decades, noise levels in cities and the associated annoyance and health consequences have become regular topics of discussion. As a result, the assessment of environmental noise transmitting into buildings has received much attention. Current models of sound transmission through open windows have either neglected their thickness or the presence of a room behind on one side. The objectives of the present work were to (1) develop an accurate analytical model of sound transmission through an open window of finite thickness into a room, (2) verify the analytical model using a finite element model and experimental measurements, and (3) …
Characterization And Quantification Of Monomers, Oligomers, And By-Products From Switchgrass Hemicelluloses During Biomass Pretreatment, Kris Allan Bunnell
Characterization And Quantification Of Monomers, Oligomers, And By-Products From Switchgrass Hemicelluloses During Biomass Pretreatment, Kris Allan Bunnell
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Production of fuels and chemicals from biomass is contingent upon economical release of carbohydrates from biomass. Carbohydrates can then be used for production of bio-based products using a biochemical conversion process. Pretreatment, the first step of the biochemical conversion process, has been suggested to be the most costly step of the conversion process. Thus, better understanding the behavior of biomass during pretreatment is imperative for an economically viable production of biofuels and chemicals. Elucidating the physicochemical properties of biomass and developing an understanding the depolymerization patterns of biomass during pretreatment will help progress towards this goal.

Real-Time Visualization Of Finite Element Models Using Surrogate Modeling Methods, Ryan C. Heap
Real-Time Visualization Of Finite Element Models Using Surrogate Modeling Methods, Ryan C. Heap
Theses and Dissertations
Finite element analysis (FEA) software is used to obtain linear and non-linear solutions to one, two, and three-dimensional (3-D) geometric problems that will see a particular load and constraint case when put into service. Parametric FEA models are commonly used in iterative design processes in order to obtain an optimum model given a set of loads, constraints, objectives, and design parameters to vary. In some instances it is desirable for a designer to obtain some intuition about how changes in design parameters can affect the FEA solution of interest, before simply sending the model through the optimization loop. This could …

Influence Of Strain And Strain Rate On Microstructural Evolution During Superplasticity Of Mg-Al-Zn Sheet, A. Mohan, S. K. Panigrahi, R. S. Mishra, R. Verma
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Strain-induced abnormal grain growth was observed along the gage length during high-temperature uniaxial tensile testing of rolled Mg-Al-Zn (AZ31) sheet. Effective strain and strain rates in biaxial forming of AZ31 sheets also affected the nature of grain growth in the formed sheet. For the uniaxial testing done at 400 C and a strain rate of 10-1 s-1, abnormal grain growth was prevalent in the gage sections that experienced true strain values between 0.2 and 1.0. Biaxial forming of AZ31 at 5 x 10 -2 s-1 and 400 C also exhibited abnormal grain growth at the cross …
Segmentation And Model Generation For Large-Scale Cyber Attacks, Steven E. Strapp
Segmentation And Model Generation For Large-Scale Cyber Attacks, Steven E. Strapp
Theses
Raw Cyber attack traffic can present more questions than answers to security analysts. Especially with large-scale observables it is difficult to identify which packets are relevant and what attack behaviors are present. Many existing works in Host or Flow Clustering attempt to group similar behaviors to expedite analysis; these works often phrase the problem directly as offline unsupervised machine learning. This work proposes online processing to simultaneously model coordinating actors and segment traffic that is relevant to a target of interest, all while it is being received. The goal is not just to aggregate similar attack behaviors, but to provide …
Preconditioning Methods For Ideal And Multiphase Fluid Flows, Ashish Gupta
Preconditioning Methods For Ideal And Multiphase Fluid Flows, Ashish Gupta
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The objective of this study is to develop a preconditioning method for ideal and multiphase multispecies compressible fluid flow solver using homogeneous equilibrium mixture model. The mathematical model for fluid flow going through phase change uses density and temperature in the formulation, where the density represents the multiphase mixture density. The change of phase of the fluid is then explicitly determined using the equation of state of the fluid, which only requires temperature and mixture density. The method developed is based on a finite-volume framework in which the numerical fluxes are computed using Roe’s [1] approximate Riemann solver and the …

The study is divided into three phases. During the first phase two types of casing treatments, inward protruding rings and circumferential grooves, were tested with relatively coarse grids. In the second phase, a grid resolution study is carried out with the results from this phase influencing the choices for the third stage. In the third phase, a comprehensive study is performed to …
Analysis Of Two-Stage Shunt Capacitor Bank Protection Deficiencies With Mitigation Suggested, Russell William Patterson
Analysis Of Two-Stage Shunt Capacitor Bank Protection Deficiencies With Mitigation Suggested, Russell William Patterson
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
A large utility was experiencing a problem when switching a two-stage capacitor bank resulting in misoperations of the bank protection. When the bypass switch is opened a long duration dc offset occurs across all capacitors. This dc causes saturation of the tap point VT resulting in a false differential voltage and misoperation of the protection. The utility had to disable the voltage differential during switching until the phenomenon could be studied and a suitable solution found. The work is a comprehensive analysis of the transients affecting the protection and how the problem could be mitigated. An analytical approach was taken …

Development Of Stationary And Mobile Tailgating Detection Solutions For Ground Vehicles, Tyler Zellmer
All Theses
Improving the safety of North American roadways is a top priority for government agencies and transportation organizations alike. Regulations on appropriate driving behavior have been developed to minimize the likelihood of crashes occurring, but law enforcement tools remain to be fully developed and applied in the field. One prominent example of this is tailgating – the dangerous act of one ground vehicle following another too closely. This activity is responsible for thousands of crashes every year, but police officers currently have few tools to accurately detect and document tailgating events. Though tailgating often occurs in a wide variety of vehicle …

Geosynchronous Earth Orbit/Low Earth Orbit Space Object Inspection And Debris Disposal: A Preliminary Analysis Using A Carrier Satellite With Deployable Small Satellites, Derick A. Crockett
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
From communication to weather prediction, to national security, geosynchronous satellites play an important role in our society. Geosynchronous satellites are about 35,786 km (22,236 miles) from the surface of the earth. Getting a satellite to this altitude is very expensive, making geosynchronous satellites highly valued assets. Ground-based observation of these satellites is very limited and provides little insight when failures or anomalies occur. To provide detailed images and information of these critical satellites, highly functioning smaller satellites can be employed. This study explores the potential benefits of using these smaller satellites to perform on-orbit proximity inspections of geosynchronous satellites. The …

Computational Biomechanical Modeling Of The Human Knee During Kneeling, Tariq R. Abo-Alhol
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Total knee replacement benefits patients who suffer from severe knee pain or joint stiffness and other joint related illnesses that limit everyday activities. There has been an increase in the number of procedures performed each year and a need to evaluate the performance of these implants during specialized activities such as kneeling. Most computational studies lack insight into inter-patient variability and the results do not apply to large population. This study developed: (1) three-dimensional explicit finite element (FE) models to investigate natural and implanted knee joint kinematics and bone strain and (2) a platform to enable population-based evaluation by combining …
Juxtaposing Nasa’S Aeronet Aod With Carb Pm Data Over The San Joaquin Valley To Facilitate Multi-Angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (Misr) Pm Pollution Research, John Kanemoto
STAR Program Research Presentations
Airborne particulate matter (PM) has been shown to increase the risk for asthma, chronic bronchitis, cardiopulmonary complications, and respiratory cell membrane damage/infection/leakage. PM levels are currently analyzed from two perspectives: stationary land-based monitoring (LBM) sites and total Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) atmospheric column measurements. Both perspectives often leave miles of space between measuring locations and will have a continually increasing cost from introducing/maintaining sites. The Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) satellite team hopes to begin investigating/archiving PM levels comprehensively via inputting MISR AOD measurements into a function/model which predicts the amount of ground level PM.
In the future, multivariable spatial correlations …
Non-Redundant Sensor Fault Detection Using An Improved Dynamic Model, Brandon Cannon, Robert C. Leishman, Timothy W. Mclain, Joseph Jackson, Jovan Boskovic
Non-Redundant Sensor Fault Detection Using An Improved Dynamic Model, Brandon Cannon, Robert C. Leishman, Timothy W. Mclain, Joseph Jackson, Jovan Boskovic
Faculty Publications
This paper proposes a method of detecting faults in non-redundant sensors. Such a method is advantageous for small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which are prevented from carrying redundant sensors due to size, weight, and power constraints. The method we propose uses a multiplicative extended Kalman lter (MEKF) for estimation and employs hypothesis testing to detect faults. This method has been shown to detect bias, drift, and increased noise in a non-redundant sensor real-time on board an autonomous rotorcraft.

Robust Motion Estimation With Rgb-D Cameras, Robert C. Leishman, Daniel Koch, Timothy W. Mclain
Faculty Publications
Estimating vehicle motion using vision sensors in real time has been greatly explored in the past few years due to speed improvements and advances in computer hardware. Six degree of freedom motion estimation using vision information is desirable due to a vision sensors low cost, low power requirements and light weight and for the quality of the solutions that can be obtained using few assumptions about the environment. However, cameras have the downside of not providing good estimates when visual features are sparse or not available. Also, there are problems with changes in lighting and when light is low or …
Effect Of Differential Movement Of Straight Reinforcing Bars During Early Age Curing On The Bond Strength, Tyler Andrews
Effect Of Differential Movement Of Straight Reinforcing Bars During Early Age Curing On The Bond Strength, Tyler Andrews
All Theses
As the nation's infrastructure continues to age, the number of structural deficiencies is rising. Accordingly, there is a great need and desire to replace these failing components in a quick and efficient fashion. Prefabricated elements for structures such as bridges and parking decks are commonly implemented in this process in order to save both time and money. These prefabricated elements are often subjected to moving live loads during construction and repair which, consequently, result in differential movements occurring across the joints connecting the elements of these structures. Potential reductions in joint capacity, joint stiffness, and structural durability are the byproducts …
