Creation Of A Cip Method For The Heat Exchangers At Rolls-Royce, Melanie Howe, Austin Williams, Caroline Dempsey, Bethany Fralick
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
Rolls-Royce produces various engines which must be tested prior to their distribution to ensure a high-quality product. The manufacturing plant contains four test cells where the engines can be subjected to high levels of torque and extreme temperatures. A heat exchanger is necessary in this testing system and over time, unwanted waste accumulates on the system’s plates. The team is tasked with developing and implementing a system mounted on a mobile cart which can provide data to determine whether the plates need to be cleaned. For this cleaning system to work, it must fully saturate the heat exchanger in cleaning …
The Effect Of Noise-Reducing Acoustic Panels On The Noise Levels And Overall Safety Of Infant Sleep Machines, Pranav Poola
The Effect Of Noise-Reducing Acoustic Panels On The Noise Levels And Overall Safety Of Infant Sleep Machines, Pranav Poola
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
Infant sleep machines (ISMs) are devices used to help infants fall asleep faster and stay asleep for longer amounts of time, yet they can often be too loud for infantile ears, which could potentially be dangerous. This research aimed to minimize the risks of infant sleep machines without reducing the effectiveness of the infant sleep machines themselves through the use of acoustic panels. Based on previous studies, it was hypothesized that the acoustic panels would reduce the noise levels of the ISM to less than recommended limits of 50 dB-A. A specific corner of a designated room was prepared with …

High-throughput screening has become one of the major strategies for the discovery of novel functional materials. However, its effectiveness is severely limited by the lack of sufficient and diverse materials in current materials repositories such as the open quantum materials database (OQMD). Recent progress in deep learning have enabled generative strategies that learn implicit chemical rules for creating hypothetical materials with new compositions and structures. However, current materials generative models have difficulty in generating structurally diverse, chemically valid, and stable materials. Here we propose CubicGAN, a generative adversarial network (GAN) based deep neural network model for large scale generative design …

Passive SCR systems, which employ both a three-way catalyst and SCR catalyst, are effective for the reduction of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from lean burn gasoline engines. However, questions remain regarding the effect of three-way catalyst formulations on their performance in these systems. Here, Pd/CeOx/Al2O3 catalysts with variable CeOx loading were synthesized, characterized, and evaluated to determine the effects of CeOx on catalyst performance. While a small amount of ceria was beneficial for promoting essential reactions, excess ceria was detrimental due to the increase in oxygen storage capacity. Additionally, insights into potential reaction pathways for NH3 production were determined.

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) require a gas diffusion layer to aid in fuel transport to the catalyst sites. A microporous layer (MPL) is often added to the GDL to improve liquid saturation inside gas diffusion media. In this work, the lattice Boltzmann method was applied to four GDL samples with the addition of an MPL. Three injection orientations were used to study liquid evolution through the samples. Each orientation used four different injection pressures, ranging from 5,000 Pa to 8,000 Pa. Saturation data for GDL samples with and without an MPL were compared. Results showed that when adding …

While hydropower in California is one the main sources of renewable energy, population growth has continuously increased demand for energy. In addition, recent droughts reduced the amount of available water behind the hydropower dams to provide the water head needed to run the turbines in hydropower plants. A more sustainable alternative, instead of developing new infrastructure, is to enhance the daily operation of reservoirs to support hydropower generation. This study suggests a new optimal operation policy for Folsom Reservoir in California and hydropower plants, which maximizes hydropower generation and reduces flood risk. This study demonstrates the application of the cellular …

Anatomical Correlates Of Age-Related Basal Forebrain Dysfunction, Brandy Lynn Somera
Theses and Dissertations
The basal forebrain (BF) is comprised of several nuclei including the substantia innominata, medial septum, nucleus basalis and diagonal band of broca which are involved in cognitive functions including attention, motivation, and arousal. BF neurons are particularly vulnerable to dysfunction and degeneration in aged humans and, more dramatically, in diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Age-related BF dysfunction may reflect diminished afferent regulation as well as an altered local glial environment. Our lab has previously shown reduced orexin/hypocretin innervation of BF in aging, a phenomenon that may link afferent dysfunction with altered microglial homeostasis. There is little research examining these …

Robust Adaptive Model Predictive Control Of Nonlinear Sample-Data Systems, Lixing Yang
Theses and Dissertations
In the past decades, model predictive control (MPC) has been widely used as an efficient tool in areas such as process control, power grids, transportation systems, and manufacturing. It provides an approach that aims to design stabilizing feedback to the system so that the performance criterion gets minimized while the state and input constraints get satisfied. In many situations, MPC may outperform other approaches to design and implement feedback control systems. Furthermore, MPC may solve optimization problems with large and practically important sets of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems efficiently. A typical implementation of MPC predicts the optimal control inputs that …
Heterogeneous Extended Langmuir Model With A Truncated Multi-Normal Energy Distribution For Fitting Unary Data And Predicting Mixed-Gas Adsorption Equilibria, Sofia Tosso
Theses and Dissertations
A heterogeneous extended Langmuir model (HEL) that uses a truncated frequency energy distribution based on a one, two or three normal distributions is presented to predict gas adsorption mixtures of single, binary, and ternary gas experimental data involving CO2, H2S and C3H8 on H-modernite reported in the work of Ritter et al (1986) in terms of both solid phase molar fractions and total loadings. These models were initially fitted against single gas data and then used to predict binary data and to establish the type of perfect correlations, whether positive or negative, exist amongst these three species. The models then …

Regulation Of Inflammatory Processes By Tryptamine, Cannabidiol And 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin, Nicholas Dopkins
Theses and Dissertations
Host immunity is a complicated system of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory processes that respond to exogenous and endogenous threats to regulate host physiology, inhibit carcinogenesis, and protect from infections. Sustained deviance from normal immunological function occurs due to a variety of factors both endogenous and exogenous, with some factors that can dysregulate host immunity including: genetics, microbiota composition, toxin exposure, age, gender, and smoking. The etiology of inflammatory disorders is both convoluted and complex due to the sheer number of facets regulating host immunity. To better contribute to understanding how immunological dysregulation occurs we focused on how three anti-inflammatory compounds (tryptamine, …
Towards Intelligent Structural Health Monitoring Of Infrastructure Systems: An Interdisciplinary Study Of Acoustic Emission Monitoring, Numerical Simulation, And Artificial Intelligence, Li Ai
Theses and Dissertations
Some complex infrastructure systems, such as nuclear facilities and bridges, are subject to structural damage due to environmental erosion, material deterioration, and other factors after long periods of use. Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and alkali-silica reaction (ASR) have been identified as the primary degradation mechanisms for steel and concrete structures in nuclear facilities and bridges. Ensuring the integrity and operational safety of structures during their lifetime is an important task. Nondestructive methods and structural health monitoring can be used to detect damage caused by SCC and ASR instead of conventional visual inspection. Among the nondestructive methods, acoustic emission (AE) is …

Aortopathies refer to a broad class of pathological conditions affecting the aorta and are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the US. Specifically, aortic aneurysms and aortic dissections have diverse etiologies that are initiated by alterations in the tissue’s extracellular-matrix (ECM) proteins, namely collagen and elastin, thereby predisposing the aortic wall to weaken and rupture. Pentagalloyl glucose (PGG) has recently emerged as a non-surgical treatment to reduce the risk of dissection or rupture. PGG is a known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory which has been shown to have ECM-restorative qualities that enhance collagen and elastin’s functional properties. Prior studies using …

An Investigation Of Strong Electrostatic Adsorption Using Formed Commercial Supports, Connor Brendan Mcdonough
Theses and Dissertations
Strong electrostatic adsorption (SEA) is a well-tested procedure for the synthesis of supported monometallic and bimetallic nanoparticles with ultrasmall size (< 2 nm). Where, previous studies have laid the foundation for SEA using a variety of powdered supports, catalysts in this form are not suited for large volume chemical applications where pressure drop is critical to the process economics. Although there is no fundamental difference between the surface functional groups on powdered and extruded supports, the present study examined electrostatic adsorption as it relates to proton diffusion, precursor diffusion, and capillary imbibition.
Three formed alumina spheres and one carbon extrudate were selected for study. The alumina spheres, provided by BASF, were developmental materials with varying pore size distributions between 12 and 24800 angstroms. The carbon, provided by ADM and manufactured by CABOT, was strictly microporous in structure and was included to investigate the differences in mass transport as a function of support material.
Results indicated, a significant limitation in the approach to pH equilibrium comparing formed alumina spheres with the same …

Optimizing Heat Pipes With Partially-Hybrid Mesh-Groove Wicking Structures And Its Capillary-Flowing Analysis By Simulation, Guanghan Huang
Theses and Dissertations
Heat pipes are known as efficient two-phase heat transfer devices and widely utilized in thermal management of power plants and electronics. The hybrid mesh-groove wick promises to attain a higher thermal performance of the heat pipe by balancing the permeability and capillarity. However, traditional fully hybrid mesh-groove wick presents considerable condensation thermal resistance due to the condensed quiescent working fluid and thick, saturated wick.
In this study, a novel partially hybrid mesh-groove wick has been proposed to enhance the evaporation of L-shaped copper-ethanol heat pipes. L-shaped heat pipe promotes high-efficient draining of condensed liquid by gravity, while traditional straight-shaped heat …

Modifications to the traditional Onsager theory for modeling isotropic–nematic phase transitions in hard prolate spheroidal systems are presented. Pure component systems are used to identify the need to update the Lee–Parsons resummation term. The Lee–Parsons resummation term uses the Carnahan–Starling equation of state to approximate higher-order virial coefficients beyond the second virial coefficient employed in Onsager’s original theoretical approach. As more exact ways of calculating the excluded volume of two hard prolate spheroids of a given orientation are used, the division of the excluded volume by eight, which is an empirical correction used in the original Lee–Parsons resummation term, must …

Acoustic waves are widely used in structural health monitoring (SHM) for detecting fatigue cracking. The strain energy released when a fatigue crack advances has the effect of exciting acoustic waves, which travel through the structures and are picked up by the sensors. Piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) can effectively sense acoustic waves due to fatigue-crack growth. Conventional acoustic-wave passive SHM, which relies on counting the number of acoustic events, cannot precisely estimate the crack length. In the present research, a novel method for estimating the crack length was proposed based on the high-frequency resonances excited in the crack by the …
