Crystal Growth, Characterization And Anisotropic Electrical Properties Of Gase Single Crystals For Thz Source And Radiation Detector Applications, K. C. Mandal, C. Noblitt, M. Choi, A. Smirnov, R. D. Rauh

Faculty Publications

The single crystal growth of large semi‐insulating GaSe by the vertical Bridgman technique using zone‐refined selenium (Se) and HP gallium (Ga) is described. The grown crystals (up to 10 cm long and 2.5 cm diameter) have been characterized thoroughly by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive analysis by x‐rays (EDAX), optical absorption/transmission, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), charge carrier electrical property measurements, second harmonic test, and radiation detection measurements.

Service-Oriented Computing: Key Concepts And Principles, Michael N. Huhns, Munindar P. Singh Jan 2005

Service-Oriented Computing: Key Concepts And Principles, Michael N. Huhns, Munindar P. Singh

Faculty Publications

Traditional approaches to software development - the ones embodied in CASE tools and modeling frameworks - are appropriate for building individual software components, but they are not designed to face the challenges of open environments. Service-oriented computing provides a way to create a new architecture that reflects components' trends toward autonomy and heterogeneity. We thus emphasize SOC concepts instead of how to deploy Web services in accord with current standards. To begin the series, we describe the key concepts and abstractions of SOC and the elements of a corresponding engineering methodology.

We report on the synthesis of PbTiO3–CoFe2O4 multiferroic nanocomposites and continuous tuning of their ferroelectric and magnetic properties as a function of the average composition on thin-film composition spreads. The highest dielectric constant and nonlinear dielectric signal was observed at (PbTiO3)85–(CoFe2O4)15, where robust magnetism was also observed. Transmission electron microscopy revealed a pancake-shaped epitaxial nanostructure of PbTiO3 on the order of 30 nm embedded in the matrix of CoFe2O4 at this composition. Composition dependent ferroics properties observed here indicate that there …

Mechanics Of Composite Materials In Fuel Cell Systems, Kenneth Reifsnider, Xinyu Huang, G. Ju, Matthew Feshler, K. An

Faculty Publications

The science and technology that are fundamental to the concept of composite materials are also the foundation for the construction and function of fuel cells and fuel cell systems. The present paper outlines this relationship in the context of the physics and chemistry that are enabled by the specific selection and arrangement of constituents of the “functional composite” fuel cell. General principles of operation are described, and fundamental issues are defined that must be addressed by the composites community if the fuel cell science and engineering is to advance. Examples of several types of functional composite fuel cells are presented, …

Transient Analysis Of A Porous Electrode, Sheba Devan, Venkat R. Subramanian, Ralph E. White Jan 2005

Transient Analysis Of A Porous Electrode, Sheba Devan, Venkat R. Subramanian, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

An analytical expression is presented for the voltage response including the transient voltage for a simple (i.e., no concentration gradients) porous electrode model subject to a sinusoidal input current density. The transient voltage response as a function of the frequency, exchange current density, and double layer capacitance is studied independent of the periodic (steady state) voltage response. The change in the voltage response in the transient region is compared to that of the periodic voltage response with respect to the parameters. The physical properties of the porous electrode can be estimated using the voltage response in the transient …

Cubic Spline Regression For The Open-Circuit Potential Curves Of A Lithium-Ion Battery, Qingzhi Guo, Ralph E. White Jan 2005

Cubic Spline Regression For The Open-Circuit Potential Curves Of A Lithium-Ion Battery, Qingzhi Guo, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A cubic spline regression model was used to fit the experimental open-circuit potential (OCP) curves of two intercalation electrodes of a lithium-ion battery. All the details of an OCP curve were accurately predicted by the resulting model. The number of regression intervals used to fit an OCP curve was determined in a way such that in each regression interval the OCP exhibits a profile predictable by a third-order polynomial. The locations of the data points used to separate regression intervals were optimized. Compared to a polynomial model with the same number of fitting parameters, the cubic spline regression model is …

A Mathematical Model For A Lithium-Ion Battery/Electrochemical Capacitor Hybrid System, Godfrey Sikha, Ralph E. White, Branko N. Popov Jan 2005

A Mathematical Model For A Lithium-Ion Battery/Electrochemical Capacitor Hybrid System, Godfrey Sikha, Ralph E. White, Branko N. Popov

Faculty Publications

A one-dimensional model for predicting the performance of a battery/electrochemical capacitor-hybrid system has been developed. Simulation results are presented for a LiCoO2|LiPF6 ethylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate|carbon battery system and a Maxwell PC 10F carbon double-layer electrochemical capacitor. The current shared between the battery and the electrochemical capacitor at very short times depends on the ohmic resistances of the battery and the capacitor. As the discharge proceeds, the operating conditions such as frequency, duty ratio, and peak pulse discharge current control the current shared among parallel circuits. These parameters also determine the extent of the run time increase of …

Simulation Of Gate Lag And Current Collapse In Gallium Nitride Field-Effect Transistors, N. Braga, R. Mickevicius, R. Gaska, M. S. Shur, M. Asif Khan, Grigory Simin Nov 2004

Simulation Of Gate Lag And Current Collapse In Gallium Nitride Field-Effect Transistors, N. Braga, R. Mickevicius, R. Gaska, M. S. Shur, M. Asif Khan, Grigory Simin

Faculty Publications

Results of two-dimensional numerical simulations of gate lag and current collapse in GaN heterostructurefield-effect transistors are presented. Simulation results clearly show that current collapse takes place only if an enhanced trapping occurs under the gate edges. Hot electrons play an instrumental role in the collapse mechanism. The simulation results also link the current collapse with electrons spreading into the buffer layer and confirm that a better electron localization (as in a double heterostructurefield-effect transistor) can dramatically reduce current collapse.

Synergetic Control Of Power Converters For Pulse Current Charging Of Advanced Batteries From A Fuel Cell Power Source, Zhenhua Jiang, Roger A. Dougal Jul 2004

Synergetic Control Of Power Converters For Pulse Current Charging Of Advanced Batteries From A Fuel Cell Power Source, Zhenhua Jiang, Roger A. Dougal

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a synergetic controller for pulse current charging of advanced batteries from a fuel cell power source. Pulse current charging protocol that has been shown to have many advantages over the traditional constant current/constant voltage protocol is applied in a fuel cell powered battery-charging station to reduce the total charging time. Strong nonlinearity and dynamics exist in such systems. In this paper, the synergetic control approach is applied to regulate the buck converters that control the pulse charging currents to the many batteries. A practical synergetic controller to coordinate pulse current charging of the battery is synthesized and …

Response To Comments On “Passivity-Based Control Of Saturated Induction Motors”, Levent U. Gökdere, Marwan A. Simaan, Charles W. Brice

Faculty Publications

Contrary to the claims made in the comments to our paper, the passivity-based controller developed for induction motors has already been tested on the same demanding trajectories used for the input–output linearization controller. The experimental results show that the passivitybased controller provides closer tracking of the same mechanical trajectory, when compared with the input–output linearization controller.

Simulation Of Hot Electron And Quantum Effects In Algan/Gan Heterostructure Field Effect Transistors, N. Braga, R. Mickevicius, R. Gaska, H. Xu, M. S. Shur, M. Asif Khan, Grigory Simin, J. Yang Jun 2004

Simulation Of Hot Electron And Quantum Effects In Algan/Gan Heterostructure Field Effect Transistors, N. Braga, R. Mickevicius, R. Gaska, H. Xu, M. S. Shur, M. Asif Khan, Grigory Simin, J. Yang

Faculty Publications

We report on simulations of electrical characteristics of AlGaN/(InGaN)/GaN heterostructurefield effect transistors with quantum and hot electroneffects taken into account. Polarization charges lead to quantum confinement of electrons in the channel and to the formation of two-dimensional electron gas. The electron quantization leads to the spread of the electronwave function into the barrier and bulk but does not have significant impact on dc electrical characteristics.Hot electrons play an important part in the charge transport by spilling over into the bulk GaN where they are captured by traps. This leads to negative differential conductivity, which is also observed experimentally. The simulation …

Growth And Transport Properties Of Complementary Germanium Nanowire Field Effect Transistors, Andrew B. Greytak, Lincoln J. Lauhon, Mark S. Gudiksen, Charles M. Lieber

Faculty Publications

n- and p-type Ge nanowires were synthesized by a multistep process in which axial elongation, via vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) growth, and doping were accomplished in separate chemical vapor deposition steps. Intrinsic, single-crystal, Ge nanowires prepared by Au nanocluster-mediated VLS growth were surface-doped in situ using diborane or phosphine, and then radial growth of an epitaxial Ge shell was used to cap the dopant layer. Field-effect transistors prepared from these Ge nanowires exhibited on currents and transconductances up to 850 µA/µm and 4.9 µA/V, respectively, with device yields of >85%.

Control Strategies For Active Power Sharing In A Fuel-Cell-Powered Battery-Charging Station, Zhenhua Jiang, Roger A. Dougal May 2004

Control Strategies For Active Power Sharing In A Fuel-Cell-Powered Battery-Charging Station, Zhenhua Jiang, Roger A. Dougal

Faculty Publications

This paper presents an effective system design for a fuel-cell-powered battery-charging station and three control strategies for active power sharing among the batteries. This battery-charging station allows multiple batteries to be simultaneously charged. Three control strategies were investigated to coordinate the active power distribution among the battery-charging branches. The baseline control strategy Was equal rate charging. Two advanced control strategies, proportional rate charging and pulse current charging, were compared to the baseline strategy. These control strategies were realized in MaTLaB/Simulink, and the current and voltage regulations were implemented using the classical proportional-integral control approach. The system simulation was conducted in …

Noble Metal Nanostructures Synthesized Inside Mesoporous Nanotemplate Pores, J. Arbiol, E. Rossinyol, A. Cabot, F. Peiro, A. Cornet, J. R. Morante, Fanglin Chen, Meilin Liu

Faculty Publications

Noble metal impregnation has resulted in the inclusion of metal nanostructures within the SBA-15 mesoporous silica hexagonal pores (from nanoclusters to nanowires). A bright-field transmission electron microscopy three-dimensional reconstruction is proposed to analyze the localization of nanostructures within the pores of mesoporous nanotemplates. The method allows corroboration whether the nanostructures are synthesized inside the pores or they are synthesized alternatively on the nanotemplate aggregates exterior surface.

Gas-Diffusion Process In A Tubular Cathode Substrate Of A Sofc, Part Ii: Identification Of Gas-Diffusion Process Using Ac Impedance Method, Kevin Huang

Faculty Publications

The effects of cathodic dc bias, bulk pO2, and effective O2 -diffusivity on ac impedance spectra of Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation’s cathode-supported solid oxide fuel cells were systematically studied over a temperature range of 800 to 1000°C. It was found that the activation process dominated the overall electrode kinetics at 800°C, by which the applied dc bias reduced the electrode resistance considerably. With increasing the temperature to above 900°C, the activation process became effectively activated, leading to a visible arc at the lowest frequency on the impedance spectrum, which is relevant to the pore gas-diffusion process. …

Gas-Diffusion Process In A Tubular Cathode Substrate Of An Sofc, Part I: Theoretical Analysis Of Gas-Diffusion Process Under Cylindrical Coordinate System, Kevin Huang

Faculty Publications

In this the first part of a two-part paper, the gas-diffusion process through a thick and porous tubular cathode substrate of a solid oxide fuel cell-(SOFC) was theoretically analyzed using classic Fick’s diffusion equation under the cylindrical coordinate system. The effects of current density, temperature, oxygen diffusivity or porosity, wall thickness, and bulk pO2 on the concentration (or pore in this paper) polarization were calculated and are presented graphically. The results clearly show a greater impact on pore polarization by current density, oxygen diffusivity, wall thickness, and bulk pO2, but not by temperature. In addition, …

Synthesis Of Tin Oxide Nanostructures With Controlled Particle Size Using Mesoporous Frameworks, A. Cabot, J. Arbiol, E. Rossinyol, J. R. Morante, Fanglin Chen, Meilin Liu Mar 2004

Synthesis Of Tin Oxide Nanostructures With Controlled Particle Size Using Mesoporous Frameworks, A. Cabot, J. Arbiol, E. Rossinyol, J. R. Morante, Fanglin Chen, Meilin Liu

Faculty Publications

Tin oxide nanostructures with controlled narrow particle size distribution were synthesized inside silica mesoporous templates. In this way, particle growth was blocked by physically corseting the tin compound inside the silica frameworks, the pore diameter of which determines the final tin oxide crystallite size distribution. Template structures were subsequently eliminated by chemical methods to collect the unsupported semiconductor nanoparticles. Thus obtained tin oxed nanopowders, with particle sizes in the range between 6 and 10 nm, were structurally, chemically, and electically characterized. The results are compared with those obtained from the characterization of larger crystallite materials.

Symbolically Aided Model Development For An Induction Machine In Virtual Test Bed, Wenzhong Gao, Eugene V. Slovodnik, Roger A. Dougal

Faculty Publications

A new phase-domain induction machine model for use in power system dynamic simulation is developed with the aid of a symbolic tool. The symbolic tool can automatically construct a time-domain power system component model in the resistive companion form (RCF) that is widely used in time-domain simulators. The automatic differentiation technique (aDT) is utilized within the context of a symbolic modeling language, and the tool has been implemented for the virtual test bed (VTB) simulation environment. The new induction machine model was used to study start-up transients of an induction motor. The new model was verified by comparing the simulation …

Surface States In Template Synthesized Tin Oxide Nanoparticles, A. Cabot, J. Arbiol, R. Ferre, J. R. Morante, Fanglin Chen, Meilin Liu Feb 2004

Surface States In Template Synthesized Tin Oxide Nanoparticles, A. Cabot, J. Arbiol, R. Ferre, J. R. Morante, Fanglin Chen, Meilin Liu

Faculty Publications

Tin–oxide nanoparticles with controlled narrow size distributions are synthesized while physically encapsulated inside silica mesoporous templates. By means of ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, a redshift of the optical absorbance edge is observed. Photoluminescence measurements corroborate the existence of an optical transition at 3.2 eV. The associated band of states in the semiconductor gap is present even on template-synthesized nanopowders calcined at 800 °C, which contrasts with the evolution of the gap states measured on materials obtained by other methods. The gap states are thus considered to be surface localized, disappearing with surface faceting or being hidden by the surface-to-bulk ratio decrease.

Effect Of Porosity On The Capacity Fade Of A Lithium-Ion Battery: Theory, Godfrey Sikha, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A mathematical model is presented to predict the performance of a lithium-ion battery. It includes the changes in the porosity of the material due to the reversible intercalation processes and the irreversible parasitic reaction. The model was also extended to predict the capacity fade in a lithium-ion battery based on the unwanted parasitic reaction that consumes Li+ along with the changes in the porosities of the electrodes with cycling due to the continuous parasitic side reaction. The model can be used to predict the drop in the voltage profile, change in the state of charge, and the effects of …

Faculty Publications

We have fabricated a series of composition spreads consisting of ferroelectric BaTiO3 and piezomagnetic CoFe2O4 layers of varying thicknesses modulated at nanometer level in order to explore artificial magnetoelectricthin-film heterostructures. Scanning microwavemicroscopy and scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscopy were used to map the dielectric and magnetic properties as a function of continuously changing average composition across the spreads, respectively. Compositions in the middle of the spreads were found to exhibit ferromagnetism while displaying a dielectric constant as high as ≈120.

Parameter Estimates For A Pemfc Cathode, Qingzhi Guo, Vijay A. Sethuraman, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

Five parameters of a model of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) cathode (the volume fraction of gas pores in the gas diffusion layer, the volume fraction of gas pores in the catalyst layer, the exchange current density of the oxygen reduction reaction, the effective ionic conductivity of the electrolyte, and the ratio of the effective diffusion coefficient of oxygen in a flooded spherical agglomerate particle to the square of that particle radius) were determined by least-squares fitting of experimental polarization curves. The values of parameters obtained in this work indicate that ionic conduction and gas-phase transport are two …

Analytical Solution For The Impedance Of A Porous Electrode, Sheba Devan, Venkat R. Subramanian, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A macrohomogeneous model is presented for a porous electrode that includes coupled potential and concentration gradients with linear kinetics. The equations are solved to obtain an analytical expression for the impedance of a porous electrode. Complex plane plots are presented that illustrate two well-defined arcs: a kinetic arc and a diffusion arc with their time constants far apart. The effects of parameters such as exchange current density, porosity, diffusion coefficient, thickness, and interfacial area on the impedance spectra are presented. The usefulness of the analytical solution in investigating the effect of solution phase diffusion is also presented.

A model for the simulation of the steady-state impedance response of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) cathode is presented. The catalyst layer of the electrode is assumed to consist of many flooded spherical agglomerate particles surrounded by a small volume fraction of gas pores. Stefan-Maxwell equations are used to describe the multicomponent gas-phase transport occurring in both the gas diffusion layer and the catalyst layer of the electrode. Liquid-phase diffusion of O2 is assumed to take place in the flooded agglomerate particles. Newman’s porous electrode theory is applied to determine over-potential distributions. © 2004 The Electrochemical Society. All …
