Walkcompass: Finding Walking Direction Leveraging Smartphone's Inertial Sensors, Nirupam Roy
Walkcompass: Finding Walking Direction Leveraging Smartphone's Inertial Sensors, Nirupam Roy
Theses and Dissertations
Determining moving direction with smartphone's inertial sensors is a well known problem in the field of location service. Compass alone cannot solve this problem because smartphone's compass cannot achieve high accuracy. Moreover GPS is not suitable in indoor scenario. Another well known approach is dead-reckoning but dead-reckoning needs to know phones initial orientation and over time it keeps accumulating errors and after some time the estimation becomes to noisy to use. To overcome these limitations, we propose a solution called WalkCompass which is specially designed for pedestrians keeping in mind the variation of force during normal human walk. Therefore the …

Advanced Fuels Modeling: Evaluating The Steady-State Performance Of Carbide Fuel In Helium-Cooled Reactors Using Frapcon 3.4, Luke H. Hallman
Theses and Dissertations
Uranium carbide (UC) has long been considered a potential alternative to uranium dioxide (UO2) fuel, especially in the context of Gen IV gas-cooled reactors. It has shown promise because of its high uranium density, good irradiation stability, and especially high thermal conductivity. Despite its many benefits, UC is known to swell at a rate twice that of UO2. However, the swelling phenomenon is not well understood, and we are limited to a weak empirical understanding of the swelling mechanism.
One suggested cladding for UC is silicon carbide (SiC), a ceramic that demonstrates a number of desirable properties. Among them are …
Fault Aware Soft Restart Of An Islanded Microgrid Using An Inverter Coupled Energy Storage System, Asif Anwar
Fault Aware Soft Restart Of An Islanded Microgrid Using An Inverter Coupled Energy Storage System, Asif Anwar
Theses and Dissertations
This research developed a method for autonomous operation of an inverter-coupled energy storage system for safe islanding- re-energization - and reconnection of the facility-island or microgrid to the utility / distribution circuit in a seamless manner in the event of a fault. This enables the energy storage system to function as an autonomous source within the utility power distribution system without the need to re-engineer the existing protection coordination in the distribution system. Fault detection based on voltage measurements from the inverter terminals are used to detect a fault and isolate the energy storage-powered facility with negligible power feed into …
Analysis Of Modulation And Voltage Balancing Strategies For Modular Multilevel Converters, Ryan Blackmon
Analysis Of Modulation And Voltage Balancing Strategies For Modular Multilevel Converters, Ryan Blackmon
Theses and Dissertations
Modular multilevel converters are an emerging voltage source converter topology suitable for many applications. The increased utilization of HVDC power transmission solutions has resulted in modular multilevel converters becoming a more common converter type. Other applications include interfacing renewable energy power sources to the grid and motor drives. Modular multilevel converters are beneficial for medium voltage motor drives because the properties of this converter topology, such as low distortion, allow for an efficient motor drive design.
Modular multilevel converters are designed where instead of using 6 IGBTs as in a conventional voltage source converter, numerous low-rated IGBTs are used to …

Application Of Agent-Based Approaches To Enhance Container Terminal Operations, Omor Sharif Abul Bashar Mohammad
Theses and Dissertations
Queuing at marine terminal gates has long been identified as a source of emissions and high drayage costs due to the large number of trucks idling. The first study in this dissertation addresses queuing of trucks at marine terminal gates and presents a novel agent-based framework where the drayage companies can minimize congestion by using the provided real-time gate queuing information. The problem was tackled based on the approach of El Farol Bar problem from game theory. Our proposed model can be used as a means of managing demand for the marine terminals, assuming that drayage firms will adjust their …

Applications Of High Throughput (Combinatorial) Methodologies To Electronic, Magnetic, Optical, And Energy-Related Materials, Martin L. Green, Ichiro Takeuchi, Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers
Faculty Publications
High throughput (combinatorial) materials science methodology is a relatively new research paradigm that offers the promise of rapid and efficient materials screening, optimization, and discovery. The paradigm started in the pharmaceutical industry but was rapidly adopted to accelerate materials research in a wide variety of areas. High throughput experiments are characterized by synthesis of a “library” sample that contains the materials variation of interest (typically composition), and rapid and localized measurement schemes that result in massive data sets. Because the data are collected at the same time on the same “library” sample, they can be highly uniform with respect to …

Molten Carbonates As An Effective Oxygen Reduction Catalyst For 550–650°C Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Yunhui Gong, Xue Li, Lingling Zhang, Whitney Tharp, Changyong Qin, Kevin Huang
Faculty Publications
We report the first study that investigates the use of molten carbonates as an effective catalyst to promote electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode of intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). A series of binary Li-K carbonate compositions were incorporated into the porous backbones of a commercial cathode assembled in symmetrical impedance cells for electrochemical characterization. Within the temperature range of 550–650◦C, we observed that the polarization and ohmic area-specific resistances of the original sample can be significantly reduced by the introduction of molten carbonates. A new ORR charge-transfer model involving two intermediate species CO5 2− and …
Capacity Fade Model For Spinel Limn2O4 Electrode, Yiling Dai, Long Cai, Ralph E. White
Capacity Fade Model For Spinel Limn2O4 Electrode, Yiling Dai, Long Cai, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
A mathematical model for the capacity fade of a LiMn2O4 (LMO) electrode is developed in this paper by including the acid attack on the active material and the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film formation on the LMO particle surface. The acid generated by the LiPF6 and the solvent decompositions are coupled to the manganese (Mn) dissolution. The decrease of the Li ion diffusion coefficient is involved as another contribution to the capacity fade, which is caused by the passive film formation on the active material surface. The effects of cell practical operation/fabrication conditions and kinetics of …

Asymmetric Hydrogenation Of Α, Β-Unsaturated Carboxylic Acid Over Chiral-Modified Palladium Catalyst, Shuai Tan
Theses and Dissertations
The production of optically pure chemicals through enantioselective catalytic reaction plays a key role a variety of industrials (e.g., pharmaceutical, agrochemical). Among several established methods, chiral-modified supported transition metal catalyst has been addressed attentions since past decades due to an environmental concern. Asymmetric hydrogenation of α, β-unsaturated carboxylic acid over Pd catalyst is of particular interest in this area. Nevertheless, the spectroscopic aspect, as well as the kinetic mechanism of such reaction system are still not clearly understood and require further study. In this work, a model catalytic reaction has been investigated from both spectroscopic and kinetic view. To be …
Impact Of Physical Activity In The Prevention Of Colorectal Cancer, Sarah Ashley Barnes
Impact Of Physical Activity In The Prevention Of Colorectal Cancer, Sarah Ashley Barnes
Theses and Dissertations
This review evaluates the current understanding of research on the impact of physical activity in the prevention of colorectal cancer. Current biological mechanisms implicated in physical activity and colorectal cancer risk reduction are blood glucose regulation, insulin sensitivity, leptin and adiponectin profiles, inflammation as well as secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC), an exercise induced myokine. Recent literature indicates that 30-60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity a day is effective against colorectal cancer development, and there is convincing evidence of aerobic exercise as differently beneficial in recruiting mechanisms identified as preventative against colorectal cancer. This article provides …

Resveratrol Attenuates The Development Of Trans-Aortic Constriction (Tac) Induced Heart Failure In Mice, Prakash Kumar Gupta
Theses and Dissertations
Heart failure (HF) still remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality and imposes severe global affliction and enormous cost on the healthcare system. Although current pharmacological therapies have shown to slow down the progression of HF, but seems to have reached their limits in improving overall patient prognosis. Thus, an immediate call for novel alternate therapies are needed which act independently as well as in conjunction with current treatment modality. Studies were performed in the well-established transverse aortic constriction (TAC) model of chronic pressure overload (PO) in mice. In the first series of studies, Male C57BL6 mice (26-28 g) …
Linking Obesity To Colorectal Cancer: Recent Insights Into Plausible Biological Mechanisms, Catherine Guffey
Linking Obesity To Colorectal Cancer: Recent Insights Into Plausible Biological Mechanisms, Catherine Guffey
Theses and Dissertations
Obesity has emerged as a leading environmental risk factor for the development of CRC. However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship have not yet been fully explained. Recent literature has focused on 1) inflammatory processes, 2) adipokines, and 3) estrogen. Obesity-enhanced inflammation is largely orchestrated by increases in adipose tissue macrophages leading to the secretion of TNF-alpha, MCP-1, and IL-6, all of which are linked to CRC. Adiponectin is decreased with obesity and has been reported to be negatively associated with CRC, while leptin, which is increased, is positively associated with the disease. Estrogen has been shown to influence CRC, although …

Accuracy, Cost And Performance Trade-Offs For Streaming Set-Wise Floating Point Accumulation On Fpgas, Krishna Kumar Nagar
Theses and Dissertations
The set-wise summation operation is perhaps one of the most fundamental and widely used operations in scientific applications. In these applications, maintaining the accuracy of the summation is also important as floating point operations have inherent errors associated with them. Designing floating-point accumulators presents a unique set of challenges: double-precision addition is usually deeply pipelined and without special micro-architectural or data scheduling techniques, the data hazard that exists. There have been several efforts to design floating point accumulators and accurate summation architecture using different algorithms on FPGAs but these problems have been dealt with separately. In this dissertation, we present …

Theses and Dissertations
Corneal transplantation and related surgical procedures are areas of tissue replacement which have seen promising advances. Currently, cornea transplants are one of the most common surgical procedures, with approximately 40,000 occurring each year in the United States. Still, problems exist with a 20% rejection rate, post surgical infections, and the need for a constant supply of donors. The ability to safely and quickly heal and regenerate corneal epithelia fills an area of advancement in regenerative medicine, with implications reaching beyond the scope of vision therapies toward healing of a wide range of tissues and wounds. In vivo corneal wounds were …
Effect Of Physiological Oxygen Levels On Osteogenic Differentiation Of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells, Suchit Sahai
Effect Of Physiological Oxygen Levels On Osteogenic Differentiation Of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells, Suchit Sahai
Theses and Dissertations
Regenerative medicine presents exciting strategies for healing critical-size bone defects through the implantation of cells and biocompatible scaffolds. Most in vitro studies are performed in atmospheric oxygen conditions (~20%), which do not accurately mimic the CSD microenvironment. Due to damage to the vasculature at CSDs, oxygen levels fall into the hypoxic range (<5%), which can impact viability, proliferation and differentiation of the cells employed for bone regeneration. Understanding the cellular responses to hypoxia has grown primarily from study of individual molecular factors. The master regulator of adaptive responses to low oxygen availability is the nuclear factor, hypoxia-inducible factor-1. HIF-1 is a heterodimeric protein, stable below 6% O2 condition in the nucleus and has been shown to play a role in angiogenic-osteogenic coupling. We have developed a responsive, fluorescent, hypoxia detection system and determined whether HIF activity can be tracked in both 2-D and 3-D cultures. Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) were selected due to their broad utilization in tissue engineering strategies and characterized the influence of HIF signaling on its phenotype. The work done identified that of hypoxia impaired osteogenic differentiation of ASCs in both 2-D and 3-D cultures and HIF-1 did not mediate this effect. Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) strategy and varied protocols used represents a clinically feasible manipulation of cell preparation to help the survival of implanted ASCs and accelerate osteogenic differentiation at physiological oxygen levels.
Theoretical Investigation Of The Water-Gas Shift Reaction At The Three Phase Boundary Of Ceria Supported Platinum Metal Clusters, Sara Aranifard
Theoretical Investigation Of The Water-Gas Shift Reaction At The Three Phase Boundary Of Ceria Supported Platinum Metal Clusters, Sara Aranifard
Theses and Dissertations
The Water-Gas Shift (WGS: CO+H2O→CO2+H2) reaction is a key step in hydrogen fuel processing for mobile fuel cell applications. Since the reaction is equilibrium-limited and exothermic, high conversions are favored by low temperatures. However, conventional low-temperature shift catalysts are not active enough. Reducible oxide supported small noble metal clusters have shown excellent activity as low temperature WGS catalysts and it is generally believed that these catalysts are bifunctional. In other words, the reaction occurs at the three-phase boundary (TPB) of the noble metal, the reducible oxide, and the gas phase. The small noble metal cluster adsorbs/activates the CO molecules and …
Understanding The Effect Of Balance Of Plant Contaminants On Pemfcs Performance: Models, Mechanisms, Functional Group, Hyun-Seok Cho
Understanding The Effect Of Balance Of Plant Contaminants On Pemfcs Performance: Models, Mechanisms, Functional Group, Hyun-Seok Cho
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation considers contamination of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMC) that may result from chemicals that leach from balance of plant (BOP) materials. Both model predictions and experimental data are presented. The model is used to predict the cathode contamination impact on the Pt/C electrode and the membrane assuming no transport of contaminant from cathode to anode. The model prediction accounts for the contamination mechanisms such as adsorption, ion-exchange, absorption and three sources of voltage (i.e., performance) loss. The simple 2-D time-dependent model is developed by considering well known chemical engineering concepts of Langmuir adsorption, partition coefficients, plug …
Enantioselective Hydrogenation Of Α-Methylcinnamic Acid Over Pd/Al2o3: A Spectroscopic And Kinetic Study, Xiaojing Sun
Enantioselective Hydrogenation Of Α-Methylcinnamic Acid Over Pd/Al2o3: A Spectroscopic And Kinetic Study, Xiaojing Sun
Theses and Dissertations
Hydrogenation of C=C in α-methylcinnamic acid (MCA) is studied by both kinetic and spectroscopic method. Kinetic study was in a semi-batch reactor. The reaction activity is strongly solvent dependent, while selectivity remains almost unaffected. The reaction is zero order in hydrogen pressure and first order in MCA. The presence of cinchonidine does not affect the reaction order with respect to either acid or H2 pressure, but has a significant inhibiting effect on the reaction rate. The catalyst exhibits stable activity during the reaction with no sign of deactivation. The adsorption and hydrogenation in dichloromethane, isopropanol and 1, 4-Dioxane over the …
Rational Design Of Perovskite Based Anode Materials For Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: A Computational Approach, Suwit Suthirakun
Rational Design Of Perovskite Based Anode Materials For Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: A Computational Approach, Suwit Suthirakun
Theses and Dissertations
A key challenge in the development of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology is related to finding a suitable replacement for Ni-based cermet anodes. Although conventional Ni-based electrodes exhibit excellent catalytic activity and current collection, they suffer from several limitations such as instability upon redox cycling, nickel sintering, and sulfur and carbon poisoning when exposed to practical hydrocarbon fuels. Therefore, alternative anode materials need to be developed for SOFCs. Among the novel anode electrodes, perovskite based materials are of great interest because they have been shown to satisfy most intrinsic SOFC anode requirements such as high thermodynamic stability in anodic …
Assessment Of Damage In Concrete Structures Using Acoustic Emission, Marwa Abdelrahman
Assessment Of Damage In Concrete Structures Using Acoustic Emission, Marwa Abdelrahman
Theses and Dissertations
Evaluating the integrity of concrete structures is an essential procedure to ensure structural safety and durability. Non-destructive testing (NDT) is needed for localizing and characterizing the growing damage in existing structures and also for quality control of new structures. Visual inspection is a commonly used method; however it is not suitable for early detection of damage and very dependent on the experience of the inspector. More research is needed to establish advanced methods for structural health diagnosis such as acoustic emission (AE). Acoustic emission is notably sensitive to active damage in concrete structures. This thesis includes three studies that mainly …

Experimental Investigation Of Steady Flows At A Breached Levee, Cyrus K. Riahi-Nezhad
Theses and Dissertations
Steady flow at a breached levee is studied in this dissertation through a generalized model and a case study. The generalized experimental set-up consists of a main channel with an opening in its side wall and an adjustable sluice gate at its downstream end. Water surface elevation and the three-dimensional velocity field are measured by a point gauge and an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV), respectively. Time-averaged measured values of velocity field and free surface elevation are presented. In addition, Froude Number, turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and bed shear stress are computed from the measured results. Results show that the flow …
Modeling Ultrasonic Field Emanating From Scanning Acoustic Microscope For Reliable Characterization Of Pathogens (Biological Materials), Rowshan Ara Rima
Modeling Ultrasonic Field Emanating From Scanning Acoustic Microscope For Reliable Characterization Of Pathogens (Biological Materials), Rowshan Ara Rima
Theses and Dissertations
Acoustic microscopy provides extraordinary advantages over state-of-the-art invasive imaging techniques to determine the mechanical properties of living colonies of pathogens and micro-organisms. It is possible to obtain the morphomechanical parameters of the pathogenic colonies e.g. variation of thickness, stiffness and the coefficients of attenuation, using scanning acoustic microscope (SAM). However, the process requires an expert with extensive understanding of SAM and ultrasonic signals which is very time consuming and expensive for complex form of analysis. Due to lack of a suitable computational tool, presently the ultrasonic wave scattering, reflection and transmission through the biological specimens cannot be properly visualized. Without …
Biomechanics Of Porcine Renal Artery And The Development Of A Replacment Vessel, Mohamed Gabr
Biomechanics Of Porcine Renal Artery And The Development Of A Replacment Vessel, Mohamed Gabr
Theses and Dissertations
Mechanical characterization of biological soft tissues is essential in the field of biomedical engineering. In this study several loading experiments have been performed to efficiently characterize the passive mechanical response of both native porcine renal arteries and newly developed tissue constructs. The first aim of these studies is to determine whether there is a difference in mechanical response between the main renal artery and its first branch. After fitting the bi-axial data to a Holzapfel-type constitutive model, the results show that there is no statistical difference between the model parameters for renal artery and the first branch. The only significant …
An Application For Keeping Track Of Food Item Expiration, Rejin Paul James
An Application For Keeping Track Of Food Item Expiration, Rejin Paul James
Theses and Dissertations
Food, honestly, is too precious to waste. Food wastage is a very serious issue prevalent in the world today. American households alone throw out an equivalent of $165 billion worth of food each year. People often forget to consume food they purchased before the expiration date, or sometimes they over-purchase food they can have, then throw them away. Hence, this thesis aims to prevent food wastage with the help of a smart phone application that helps keep track of food item expiration dates and gives you notification alerts when it is about to expire. It implements a barcode scanner for …
The Rational Synthesis Of Supported Noble Single Or Bimetallic Catalysts By Electrostatic Adsorption, Hyeran Cho
The Rational Synthesis Of Supported Noble Single Or Bimetallic Catalysts By Electrostatic Adsorption, Hyeran Cho
Theses and Dissertations
Many catalysts are today prepared by impregnation (also called incipient wetness or dry impregnation) in which nominal amounts of metals are placed into the amount of solution just necessary to fill the pore volume of the support material. While dry impregnation (DI) is simple and the amounts of metals easily controlled, no attention is paid to metal-support or metal-metal interaction. When DI-deposited metal precursors are reduced, the particles tend to be large in size and there is often ppor contact between two metals in a bimetallic system. In this work we demonstrate the application of "strong electrostatic adsorption" (SEA) for …
Dual-Phase Mixed Ion And Electron Conducting Co2-Selective Permeation Membranes, Lingling Zhang
Dual-Phase Mixed Ion And Electron Conducting Co2-Selective Permeation Membranes, Lingling Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Fossil fuels are the dominant energy source powering our modern society. However, burning fossil fuels emits carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas that can cause climate change and ultimately threaten the survival of humanity. Effectively mitigating CO2 emissions from the use of fossil fuels has become an intense subject of scientific research as well as political debate in recent years. The current mainstream technical approach to achieving that goal is to curb the emission of CO2 by capturing CO2 at point-sources and geologically storing it. The CO2 separation and capture process, the first step toward the ultimate storage of CO2, …
