Authenticating Users With 3d Passwords Captured By Motion Sensors, Jing Tian Jan 2018

Authenticating Users With 3d Passwords Captured By Motion Sensors, Jing Tian

Theses and Dissertations

Authentication plays a key role in securing various resources including corporate facilities or electronic assets. As the most used authentication scheme, knowledgebased authentication is easy to use but its security is bounded by how much a user can remember. Biometrics-based authentication requires no memorization but ‘resetting’ a biometric password may not always be possible. Thus, we propose study several behavioral biometrics (i.e., mid-air gestures) for authentication which does not have the same privacy or availability concerns as of physiological biometrics.

In this dissertation, we first propose a user-friendly authentication system Kin- Write that allows users to choose arbitrary, short and …

A Novel Supercritical Co2-Based Decellularization Method For Maintaining Scaffold Hydration And Mechanical Properties, Michael A. Matthews, Tarek Shazly, Rachel M. Handleton, Dominic M. Casali Jan 2018

A Novel Supercritical Co2-Based Decellularization Method For Maintaining Scaffold Hydration And Mechanical Properties, Michael A. Matthews, Tarek Shazly, Rachel M. Handleton, Dominic M. Casali

Faculty Publications

Decellularized tissues are commonly utilized as tissue engineering scaffolds. Decellularization by extended exposure to aqueous detergents can damage the microstructure or deposit cytotoxic residue. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) has been proposed for decellularization, but reportedly causes dehydration and scaffold embrittlement.

Presented herein is a novel decellularization method that preserves matrix hydration state and mechanical properties. Over 97% of the water in porcine aorta is maintained by presaturating scCO2 with water; however, complete decellularization was not attained by any process utilizing only scCO2. Instead, a novel hybrid method is presented that combines a brief (48 h) exposure of tissue to aqueous …

Meso-Scale Simulation Of Size-Dependent Shear Behavior In Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Reinforced Concrete Beams Without Stirrups, Sina Khodaie Jan 2018

Meso-Scale Simulation Of Size-Dependent Shear Behavior In Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Reinforced Concrete Beams Without Stirrups, Sina Khodaie

Theses and Dissertations

There is extensive experimental evidence of the decrease in the shear stress at failure at increasing effective depths in concrete beams reinforced with glass fiberreinforced polymer (GFRP) bars without shear reinforcement. An important practical implication is that extrapolating strength values from typical laboratory-scaled experiments to design larger members may be misleading. The complexity of the underlying mechanics is reflected in the difficulty of using commercially available numerical tools to accurately estimate shear strength irrespective of beam size. This dissertation presents research on a Lattice Discrete Particle Model (LDPM) based model to simulate the response of scaled slender GFRP reinforced concrete …

The goal of this dissertation is to develop power flow optimization methods for power distribution networks with high penetration of PV generation. The approaches proposed in this dissertation have been tested using the modified version of the IEEE 34-node distribution system and the IEEE 123-node distribution system, as well as the validated model …

Matrix Stiffness Modulates Mesenchymal Stem Cell Sensitivity To Geometric Asymmetry Signals, Maria Eugenia Piroli Jan 2018

Matrix Stiffness Modulates Mesenchymal Stem Cell Sensitivity To Geometric Asymmetry Signals, Maria Eugenia Piroli

Theses and Dissertations

Human stem cells hold significant potential for the treatment of various diseases. However, their use as a therapy is hampered by the limited understanding of the mechanisms by which stem cells respond to environmental stimuli. Efforts to understand extracellular biophysical cues have demonstrated the critical roles of geometric and mechanical signals in determining the fate of stem cells. The goal of this study was to explore the interplay between cell polarity and matrix stiffness in stem cell lineage specification. We hypothesize that confining cells to asymmetric extracellular matrix (ECM) islands will impart polarity at a single-cell level and result in …

Quantifying Time Retarded Electromagnetic Fields And Their Applications In Transmission Lines, Brandon Thomas Gore Jan 2018

Quantifying Time Retarded Electromagnetic Fields And Their Applications In Transmission Lines, Brandon Thomas Gore

Theses and Dissertations

Modern baseband signaling that facilitates the passing of information over high speed interconnects such as copper twin-ax cable and printed circuit boards supports single line data rates of 100 Gbps. Next generation bandwidth requirements of electrical links are approaching frequencies up to 50 GHz. Yet, signal integrity engineers that analyze these interconnects rely on models with underlying assumptions and limited extensions beyond those proposed in the 19th century to describe per unit length characteristics of Resistance, Inductance, Conductance, and Capacitance (RLGC) for transatlantic telegraph cable. An excluded phenomenon is the time retarded behavior of electromagnetic fields. The aim of this …

Plants As Biofactories To Produce Mammalian Tumor Suppressor Micrornas, John Lachlan Macarthur Jan 2018

Plants As Biofactories To Produce Mammalian Tumor Suppressor Micrornas, John Lachlan Macarthur

Theses and Dissertations

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding single stranded RNAs that are considered master regulators of gene expression. They are also an emerging class of therapeutic agents with significant potential for the prevention and treatment of many diseases, including cancer. Many different forms of cancer are associated with loss or reduced accumulation of one or more miRNAs that function as tumor suppressors. In animal models, restoration of missing tumor suppressor miRNAs prevents the initiation, progression and/or spread of the disease. However, the current absence of an efficient method for delivery of therapeutic miRNAs is a critical barrier to their use. The research …

Novel Wideband Ebg Structures For Isolation Improvement Between Cosite Antennas, Paul John Czeresko Iii Jan 2018

Novel Wideband Ebg Structures For Isolation Improvement Between Cosite Antennas, Paul John Czeresko Iii

Theses and Dissertations

As the number of installed antennas increases on a structure, the available real estate to do so without each antenna interfering with the others diminishes. Electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structures are one way to mitigate this cosite interference with compact antenna installations. While a host of EBG structures and types (3-D, planar etc.) have been proposed and studied historically, it has been found that planar EBG structures tend to provide very narrow bandwidths for both antenna design and cosite interference reduction. This research focuses on the design of EBG structures intended to achieve greater than 20 dB of isolation improvement …

Structurally Integrated Reconfigurable Wideband Array For Conformal Applications, Michael Damon Wright

Theses and Dissertations

Structurally integrated conformal antennas offer significant advantages over traditional bolt on antennas, especially for air vehicle applications. The ability to leverage the entire structure allows for unconventionally large antennas and arrays to be implemented in a manner which does not detract from the aerodynamic, structural or aesthetic qualities of the vehicle. Works along this line have included Slotted Waveguide Antenna Stiffened Structures (SWASS), conformal helix and spiral antennas, Log Periodic Dipole Arrays (LPDA), and other antennas.

An area which has not been investigated to date is the possibility of implementing reconfigurable antennas in a structural environment. There are inherent challenges …

Modulation Of Amyloid-Β Aggregation Via Small Molecules And Glycine Zipper Alterations, Steven Zebulon Vance

Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of neurodegenerative disease. Nationally, AD is the 6th leading cause of death and the only top 10 killer of Americans that cannot be slowed, cured, or prevented. AD is characterized by the deposition of extracellular plaques of aggregated amyloid-β protein (Aβ). Aβ originates from the amyloid precursor protein (APP), a transmembrane protein that is cleaved to form a short and inert protein fragment called Aβ. However, Aβ undergoes a nucleation process wherein aggregates from soluble oligomers to insoluble fibrils are formed. While uncertainty remains as to the exact mechanism, studies have associated …

Enhance Flow Boiling In Microchannels By Regulating Two-Phase Transport Patterns, Wenming Li Jan 2018

Enhance Flow Boiling In Microchannels By Regulating Two-Phase Transport Patterns, Wenming Li

Theses and Dissertations

Flow boiling in microchannels is one of the most promising cooling techniques for microelectronics. Using latent heat by vaporization can significantly improve heat dissipation of high power density electronic devices. Most of the failure of electronic devices is induced by the occurrence of critical heat flux (CHF), which defines the maximum operating conditions. However, the vigorous rapid generation of vapor through phase change leads to chaotic two-phase flows in microchannels, resulting in flowinstability in terms of severe flow, temperature and pressure drop fluctuations. Particularly, the very well-known bubble confinement exacerbates the two-phase flow instabilities and greatly deteriorates heat transfer performance …

The tailoring potential of composites to achieve high specific stiffness and strength has promoted them as promising candidates for constructing lightweight structures. From that aspect, designers have tackled the problem of designing composite laminates, which is …

Multiscale Deformation And Failure Behavior Of Polymer Bonded Explosives Subjected To High Rate Loading, Suraj Muthiramalil Ravindran Jan 2018

Multiscale Deformation And Failure Behavior Of Polymer Bonded Explosives Subjected To High Rate Loading, Suraj Muthiramalil Ravindran

Theses and Dissertations

Polymer bonded explosives (PBX) are heterogeneous granular composites with a high-volume fraction of solid. Typically, they contain 80-95% explosive crystals and 5- 20% soft polymer binder. These materials are subjected to different loading conditions during their service life. The main function of the soft binder is to reduce shock sensitivity to prevent an accidental explosion. However, there have been inadvertent detonations in these materials during transportation and handling. The reason for such unintentional explosion is not well understood. It is commonly accepted that the formation of local hightemperature regions, called ‘hot spots’, is the primary cause. Hotspot formation is associated …

Changes Of Dispersal Ability In An Isolated Population, Connor Bacon Jan 2018

Changes Of Dispersal Ability In An Isolated Population, Connor Bacon

Theses and Dissertations

Dispersal is a core mechanism in the maintenance of metapopulations. It maintains genetic diversity by connecting subpopulations and generates new populations to replace those that die out. However, as populations become more isolated, as occurs in habitat fragmentation, dispersal becomes more difficult. This should lead to selective pressure against dispersive individuals, causing a reduction in dispersal traits. Over time, this can lead to variation in dispersal traits among populations. We examine this idea using an extreme case of isolation in Euphydryas gillettii, a population that has remained completely isolated for forty years. By comparing this population to a baseline established …

Three-Way Catalysts In Passive Selective Catalytic Reduction Systems, Calvin Thomas Jan 2018

Three-Way Catalysts In Passive Selective Catalytic Reduction Systems, Calvin Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

Conventional gasoline-powered engines operate with a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio (AFR), but greater fuel economy is achieved in lean burn engines by increasing the AFR. The primary drawback to these engines is the nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions, which cannot be reduced over a conventional three-way catalyst (TWC). Passive selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is a promising approach for the control of NOX emissions in lean burn systems. By periodically decreasing the AFR to fuel-rich levels, ammonia (NH3) can be produced over a TWC and stored on a downstream SCR catalyst for the reduction of NOX during normal lean operation. While passive SCR …

Screening Of Novel Active Salicylic Acid Analogs And Identification Of A Bacterial Effector Targeting Key Proteins Involved In Salicylic Acid-Mediated Defense, Ian Palmer

Theses and Dissertations

The master regulator of salicylic acid (SA)-mediated plant defense, NPR1 (NONEXPRESSER OF PR GENES 1), and its paralogs NPR3 and NPR4 act as SA receptors. After the perception of a pathogen, plant cells produce SA in the chloroplast. In the presence of SA, NPR1 protein is reduced from oligomers to monomers, and translocated into the nucleus. There, NPR1 binds to TGA and WRKY transcription factors to induce expression of plant defense genes. EDS1 and PBS3 are two key proteins involved in SA biosynthesis. Previous research has shown that several plant pathogens produce SA hydroxylases. These pathogen-produced hydroxylases act to degrade …

Understanding Early Amyloid-Ss Aggregation To Engineer Polyacid-Functionalized Nanoparticles As An Inhibitor Design Platform, Nicholas Vander Munnik Jan 2018

Understanding Early Amyloid-Ss Aggregation To Engineer Polyacid-Functionalized Nanoparticles As An Inhibitor Design Platform, Nicholas Vander Munnik

Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by the presence of amyloid-ß (Aß) protein aggregates in the brains of those afflicted. This protein aggregates via a complex pathway to progress from monomers to soluble oligomers and ultimately insoluble fibrils. Due to the dynamic nature of aggregation, it has proven exceedingly difficult to determine the precise interactions that lead to the formation of transient oligomers. A statistical thermodynamic model has been developed to elucidate these interactions. Aß was simulated using fully-atomistic replica exchange molecular dynamics. We use an ensemble of 5 × 105 configurations taken from these simulations as input for a self-consistent …

Development Of A Supplier’S Delivery Time And Delivered Quality Performance Index And Assessment Of Alternative Decisions Regarding Underperforming Suppliers For The Aerospace Industry, Clint Saidy Jan 2018

Development Of A Supplier’S Delivery Time And Delivered Quality Performance Index And Assessment Of Alternative Decisions Regarding Underperforming Suppliers For The Aerospace Industry, Clint Saidy

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates current practices of supplier’s delivery assessment so that a comprehensive index and a cost function model could be properly developed. Following a thorough literature review, a framework was created based on a penalty cost function that integrates both suppliers’ ability to deliver on time, as well as suppliers’ capability to deliver good quality. Afterward, suppliers could then be ranked and placed either in good standing, or transversely on probation. Underperforming suppliers face three potential outcomes based on current literature: (1) switching supplier, (2) increase collaboration, (3) maintaining the status quo. The decision vis-à-vis failing suppliers is based …
